- There is little that’s more important than caring for our communities and the people in them. I was deeply inspired by my visit to Hui Mahi’ai Aina, a self-sustaining community for unhoused people in Waimanalo, Oahu Island, Hawaii, where the residents help grow food, cook, and tend to the land, as well as the community’s gardens, animals, and more than 50 houses. Thank you, Auntie Blanche and everyone, for all you do and for reminding us of what can be achieved through faith and true community.

When I visited my friend a few years ago she said I want to show you what my friend Aunty Blanche has been building here in Nalo. Aunty Blanche took us on a tour of the property on her golf cart. There were tiny homes, a community kitchen, recreation area, and they were just beginning to make land ready for gardening. This is all on her own property. She could do anything she wants with it, and she decided that she wants to use it to help the less fortunate have a home and get back on their feet. Her own home was filled with boxes of donations of food, hygiene/cleaning products, and clothes for the residents. Others donate 💵. From what I understand, her community is entirely funded by donations. I talked to a few of the residents living there and they were so grateful for that community and for Aunty Blanche. She is definitely a force, and an example of what a person can do to help others with what they have. It was nice to see her featured here ☺️
