I would have loved to listen to a test using music, anyway, SR definitely reduces hiss , and also imparts a special color . I have always been fascinated about how music sounded in cinemas and movies from the 90s , I guess I was fascinated about Dolby SR !
So was the third playback with noise reduction? If so that's pretty impressive. I have not been using any kind of noise reduction with my Otari MX55. I have done a few mix downs to ATR tape for clients and they have liked it so far no one has asked about the noise at all but they are clients that love tape.

Yes, but a test with music would not expose the noise reduction capabilities of the unit as good as with spoken voice, that's why.
