  • "A subjective film for testing theatre sound"
    Recorded in Dolby Stereo
    Running time: 8 minutes
Picture format: 1.85:1 widescreen or 2.35:1 anamorphic
Sound format: 04 stereo optical with surround
I decided to upload this one uncropped as Brad at FT already has a much better scan that is cropped.
With the exception of the Wendy Carlos instrumental the rest of the soundtrack seems to be quite ordinary on this for some reason. Lots of sibilance and background hiss. I'm sure it's better through at least type A NR but I don't have my processor hooked up to do A/SR at this time.

As an ex-projectionist (35mm and digital) from England, this is very interesting! Thank you very much for uploading this! 🍻

This was fantastic to see! Great upload - so that's the test film... Interesting. I'm probably one of the few who sat through all 8 minutes of it ;)

I have the U.S. Dolby Jiffy Test Film version of this. Listening to the end music in a huge theatre auditorium sounds awesome as I ran this film several times.

Note to self; hole side = right track, frame side = left track
I found contradicting information on the subject on the web so I never was sure, but this one seems a better reference.

I've raised a feature request on the AEO-LIGHT git to add an option to be able to either flip the image or switch tracks at export because of this. At the moment I'm just doing it in Audacity.

@@RecordCouncil OMG, I've always thought that to swap channels all I needed to do was to reverse the left-right guides in AEO-Light, but I've just tested this long lasting assumption and it failed miserably.
But no worries, sox is here...
I already use a script that uses sox to create the 0.875s offset, it will cost me nothing to add a few parameters to sox to make the channel swap

Sounds like the sound was not processed with Dolby A noise reduction.

    • @RecordCouncil

Yep spot on, realised as soon as I uploaded that was why the dialog sounded so strange. As the scanner I use is frame by frame and not real time the audio is recovered digitally so I was not able to use my CP55 to add type A. There are some experimental software projects to apply A type NR on PC so I may try those.
