I have been going crazy with this problem. I’ll try it asap I changed the GFI. I got a new extension cord because I had to plug it into my house on a regular outlet and run a 50 foot extension cord so I didn’t have this problem. Thank you so much.
I was really frustrated. I changed chords. Changed outlets. It didn't matter. I took a torch to the element and Presto. It works fine. Thank you for making the video. It worked for me.
You are awesome. I’ve been trying to figure this thing out for two years. I almost threw it away. I used your video and it worked like magic. I did not have a torch but I had a small propane, weed torch and that worked fine too. Thank you so much for posting this.
You just fixed my smoker !!! I was so upset I had a real nice rack of ribs going and could not figure out why it was shutting off, piping the gfi took out my torch like you said, Torched it for about 3-4 minutes, she’s good as new. Thanks for saving me a few hundred bucks!
Perfect fix... thought I'd have to give up and get new grill and this worked immediately. Only sad part is that I don't have an excuse to get a new smoker now 😕
Saved the day - thanks! I was a bit lazier, I pushed a hair dryer into the hole where the wood chip loader/carrier goes, closed the door and opened the vent. Ran the hairdryer on high for 10 minutes or so, back to working.
I'm going to try this tomorrow! I got mine for free! It's called the authentic smoke hollow electric smoker! Every outlet I plugged into tripped the GFI! It sat in a garage for a year, never used? Hopefully this works? I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the tip! BTW? Mine isn't digital! It has the old style electric skillet connector!
I had my 40" for 1 year and 7 days. I went to Masterbuilt and they sent me a "blow off" text, as I was 7 days past my warranty. This GFI issue was my second problem in a year. Ugh. Anyway, the torch worked like a charm. I as getting ready to chuck it in the landfill, but decided to get out my torch and giver er' a a go. Worked. Smoked two racks of Baby Backs this weekend!! I am still extremely sour with Masterbuilt though. Honestly, I will not buy another Masterbuilt product. Thanks again for the video!! I appreciate it!!
This was very helpful. I needed to also replace the lug connectors on the heating element as they were wet and rusted. Pretty simple if all goes well. I unfortunately broke one of the soldered on posts, which made it a little more difficult. The good news is I’m back in business and smoking my meat today which is what I wanted to do in the first place.
Hit the bluetooth MS30 with the blow torch and it worked then dropped...Hit it again with more heat and it seems to have fixed it. At least I know root cause if it blows during the pork loin today :) Thanks for the advice !!!
This fixed my exact issue this weekend and saved the day. Thanks for sharing. If it keeps up I will replace the coil or start the glorious hunt for a new smoker haha.
@@Robbb411 didn’t work, I plugged into non gfi instead and had no issues. May pick up a new coil for next season and give it a shot on the gfi again so I don’t have to run a long ext cord.
You just saved me a lot of time and money and frustration. I had some build up on my coils which I think it burned off. thank you thank you thank you!!!
My heating coil has gone out and I'm having trouble finding the replacement. Would you mind sharing with me where you found your replacement coil? Thanks in advance....
Dude!! Thank you. I’d been craving ribs all week and went to turn on my smoker and it was popping the ground fault tried your trick and the ribs are cooking right now. Thanks again.
Seems everyone was having luck with this fix, but not the case for me. I torched the element for a good while and still having it trip my GFCI 20 amp outlet. It was a free upgrade to my cheaper Masterbuilt, so I'll try a couple more fixes and part swaps, but may call it a day on this project.
@@empnadajhhh9469 I ended up changing the heating element with a new one. That did the trick. There was a short inside the heating element that was tripping the circuit breaker. The torch trick did not fix the problem. I got a replacement heating element for about $30 on Amazon.
@@justincormier8794 Justin, would you mind sharing a link to the correct heating element on Amazon that you purchased? I need to replace my element and I'm not sure which one to purchase. Thanks in advance....
My fix is to start on a 20 amp plug (easy for me as one is close), after 5-10 mins I can plug into my 15 amp outdoor and it works fine ( until next time)
I had the same gfi issue with mine. I noticed that nothing ever drained through the grease hole out through the back... Not sure if it's grease build up inside, or something else.
How do you keep the the wood from flaming. I tried wood chips and both times flame ups and right away got Err 2 messages. Tried wood chunks and they also flamed up causing Err 2 .
Mine flame up once in a while. I know my uncle use to soak his chips in water for 5 mins before grilling when I was a kid. I'm assuming that was so they would smolder better.
The heating element is 1 or 2 wires, inside some powder, inside a tube Sometimes moisture gets in the end and it trips the GFCI If you know what you’re doing (electrician or uhh, accomplished at fiddling with wires...) you can hook it up to a non GFCI socket and get it really hot to dry it out. Oven elements are common
Hmm. My 30 has this issue. I had used it on a non-gfi outdoor outlet, but when we had to bring the outlet up to code, I can't use it anymore because it trips.

My issue wasn't the cord or outlets at all! It needed a new heating element! Works great! No more tripped breakers

Amazingly simple and effective fix. Thanks for sharing.
i bought a coil for mine and it fixed it, when cold it would short to the case, your theory is correct due to the expansion of the coil once warm.

Heating up mine didn't help. Ive replaced heating element and it's working great now
Worked like a champ thanks bud!
Dang, my torch try didn’t work. I’m using a small fire starter lighter… maybe it’s not strong enough?
Curious why heating up the coil solves the problem. What's the reason for this? eliminates moisture? Expands the coils? I'm curious about this. Thanks
I was told that it eliminates the moister and keeps it from tripping the GFCI.
This trick also worked with my char broil

What kind of torch? Butane/culinary? Acetelyne?
a simple butane or propane torch. If you give up entirely on the smoker you could take an Acetylene after it!

It would trip the house breaker too. GFCI didn't matter. You are correct though, moisture!
Precision Machine Shed the house breaker? So it was shorted to earth not just leaking >30mA?
Hmm. My 30 has this issue. I had used it on a non-gfi outdoor outlet, but when we had to bring the outlet up to code, I can't use it anymore because it trips.
Similar issue that i was running into.
I'm torn between buying a new one or trying to fix it.
Can you explain why this works on a coil?
I forgot to ask. Why does taking a torch to the element make it stop tripping the GFI? Anyone know??
It's my understanding that It eliminates any moisture in the element that may be arcing within the element.
This isn’t a fix. This is a workaround. Issue persists.
I ended up giving this one away and buying a new one eventually.

GFI = circuit breaker.
Didn't work for me. Sad.
Man get to the point. Slowest explanation ever.
