Super helpful to know the neutral (middle) cord goes to ground! I am trying to change the cord on my kiln, and forgot to take a photo before I unhooked all the old wires. Between your video and several kiln maintenance videos, I think I've got it figured out where all 3 of the new cords go. Thanks!

I was confused about where to put that wire after you take it out and put the soild green there for the ground. It wasn't until I saw where it went from your drawing. Good explanation. A lot of other u tube videos by people don't have a clue what "bonding" is. Except your statement about isolated neutral at panel. Neutral shall be bonded to ground at first over-current protection location (which is usually the main panel). Although if you have feeders to main panel from meter an extended length (can't remember spec, 10 ft?) over-current protection would be required for feeder. Thus making it a 4-wire system from that first breaker. A sub-panel would have 4-wire set-up. A properly wired panel would have neutrals landed on the bar that is capable of being isolated. Grounds landed to the permanently bonded bar in case the panel should ever become a sub-panel it would be a simple fix by isolating neutral bar.

Thank you thank you... That imperative statement was the TRUTH... our handy man almost burned our new house down luckily my wife heard the Sparks and yelled the dryer was on FIRE. He had put the white wire on the middle for the 3 prong connection. So thank you.

I have a haier dryer with 2 green wires. One is inside the console head and the other is attached to what the power chord goes to. But I can't find where the first green chord is supposed to go to

At my old house someone added a green wire, which is connected, but where do I put the other end and the white wire in the dryer. Couldn't attach photo.
thanks for this very helpful video. I have a question>. I understand that there are two 110v terminals in the outlet. These supply the two flat prongs (in both 4 or 3 prongs cords). 110 +110 will give 220 v needed to operate the dryer. My question is :why the two hot wires are connected separately to two the dryer terminals and not one only to get 220v? where the 110v will be added to each other to get 220v?. Thank you.
Thats a great question. ANSWER IS.... Iam not sure. I can only guess as to why the Engineers designed Dryers this way. 220v would be more efficient than just 110. More of a currant draw at 110. And the heating coils are generally 110v.Also, If one coil goes out the other would still work? You have sparked my interest and when I have time I will study. As I said before great question.

Thank you so much for your reply. The reason for my question is that I have some kitchen machines 220v and they have 2 prong plugs (not grounded). That mean one prong is hot(for 220v) and the other neutral ?. I do not want to buy expensive transformer (110220). I simply thought that may be inside the Dryer the two 110v wires are connected to become one wire (220v) :). But by Googling, I found that if the two 110v wires contact each other, the circuit will short :( . Then I found your valuable video and I hoped that I may find more explanation. Anyway, thank you and if you have any advice for my 220 machines, I would appreciate your help.

I am in a commercial application and have a 3 prong receptacle my emt is grounded and bonded to the junction box wouldn't I be electrifying the conduit back to ground if it was wired like this?

I saw you answered someone about 3 wires running to thermostat, but they are talking probably about down below on the heating element side. Mine only has 3 wires and the high limit thermostat is curving and connected to the white long heat element post, I only saw 2 big red wires (one connected to one post on heat element) and the other big red (connected to the high limit thermostat), and a small white wire is connected middle of curve on high limit and that end part is on the other post of the heat element.
When I tested the red wire on high limit and that small white, I got a beep and numbers. When I touched the red wire on the heat element and the post connecting the high limit because I could not get it to come off the heat element, I got OL and no beep?
Could improper installation of a three wire result in a brand new Hotpoint 2017 dryer not heating?

I had to use my stove outlet to plug in my dryer, luckily the stove, which has been here for years according to the landlord, is wired on a 30 amp breaker even though it should be on a 50 amp, the dryer takes a 30. So the outlet is a 3 pronged with the 3rd prong being straight. Well the chord on my dryer is 3 pronged but the 3rd prong is an L shape, so my hubby got his dremmel tool out and cut half of the L prong out {the long way} to make it a straight prong and now it works just fine. Hopefully we dont die until I can buy the correct chord.........
If our dryer has a green/yellow instead of white do we still remove the green/yellow and connect it to the middle neutral, then move the ground from our plug to where the green yellow was?

My new ge electrical wires on the unit has red yellow black and in the booklet that came with the unit says yellow is nutrual but everything i read says yellow isn't nutrual
What do we do if we have the copper strap going from the neutral to the chassey?

Hello, thank you for posting this, I hit a huge like! Lol My dryer was originally a 3 wire with the cooper neutral strap grounded to the body. If I'm hooking up a 4 wire I just remove that cooper strap and hook up the black to black, red to red, white to white and green to ground on the body correct? Thank you so much!

Question! I bought an older maytag stove top burner used. So it has a Black,Red" and ground wire coming from it. I hooked up the colors so they match and I put a cap on the white wire in the wall. Is this safe or do I have to jump the the white to ground inside the wall box?
Cap on neutral? You should ask an Electrition / have one check your wiring.
What size is the white ground wire
I use the white wire to the green wire like u said and pop the braker. I have a 4point on the dryer and the wall plug is a 3 point. With standard connection using the 4 point to the 3 point dryer turns on but dosent heat. Any idea why? Thank you
Without being there it is hard to say. I would start off with checking if your wall outlet is wired correctly. Use a volt meter.

I purchased a new Maytag dryer and it ran fine then stopped after a month. Their Tech came out and moved the white neutral on to the green ground. It worked. Month later it stopped. I looked up several videos and Maytag showed that the extra white wire needed to go on white wire (like you have) and green was to be the only thing on the ground. It stopped again a month later. I checked my breaker, the plug is new and all of it has power coming to it but it will not power up. Any clues as to why it's doing this? I'm beginning to think that I've bought a lemon.

Sounds like a problem with the dryer, maybe have the dryer looked at again. BTW... If you have a 4 prong outlet the ground should be changed back to separate white/green wire
The new computer controlled dryers tend to be...well, not good. IMO

If I have my stackable w&d wired the same way you have your 4 wire prong, and still get a slight shock barely anything but still, what could that be from?
What happens if that white ground wire is connected in the same spot with the green ground wire?
Does ot matter if the green/yellow stripe original ground is on the inside or outside of the white wire?
Is it the same if I hook the new ground wire to the other ground wire or does the old wire strictly have to go to the neutral?
The old white wire in the machine should go to the center(neutral) terminal as shown in video. If you connect the old ground( white in machine) and the green together this will eliminate the purpose of the 'new' ground as that of a Dedicated (green) ground wire.

Instead of piggy bagging, can I just leave the chassis ground attached to chassis, and connect it on the plug side, directly to the centre prone, where the white/neutral is connected? Btw, I am using a tsj-n3 8wg cable, with a 3 prone plug kit.

more over the dryer did come on for a second when I pushed the start button but shout off just as fast should I change the red and black wires where red is on the right and black is on the left since both are 110's I didn't think it mattered
on my dryer there is a green wire thats from the inside of unit connected where my new black wire goes lol any way that could be the ground wire that i should connect to center with the white??
Maybe use a flashlight and look up inside where the wires are and see if the grn is connected to the white. If so I think it would be safe to loop around and hook up to the white. If the grn wire hooks up with white up inside that is. Grn and blk should not be hooked to each other. If you are still having a problem call an Electrician or an Appliance Installer.
@breakerbroke23 you stacked the dryer ground and the plug neutral on the neutral node. Is it also acceptable to stack the plug neutral and the plug ground on the neutral node? The manufacturer of my dryer made it so that the dryer ground screw cannot be removed, so I am having trouble grounding the plug.
I had to add a 4 wire cord to a dryer that previously had a 3 wire cord connected. So what you explain at 7:41, i made that mistake by just adding the "4th ground wire" from the 4 wire cord directly to the green ground wire that was already connected to the case of the dryer. I did remove the case ground terminal and did not loop it back to the center neutral wire location. So is that an actual danger to leave it that way or is it just a more modern way to wire it ? thx

Urgent question: We're moved to new place today to find that it had 4 prong receptacle for our 3 prong dryer plug, so can't use bathroom til dryer and washer put in place. I'd sure appreciate a prompt response. Our modern GE dryer (it has some kind of computer plug outlet on it) has a green wire screwed into chassis where your example (and 4 other videos I watched) have a white wire. White means neutral, green means ground, so I don't assume that my green wire is the same as your white wire, and don't want to connect it to the white/neutral lug unless I'm sure that's right. I took out the terminal block to try to see where the green wire goes. It runs with the other 3 wires til they're wrapped in tape; then only 3 wires come out: white, black, red. So, I'd assume that this green wire is connected to the white wire. Also, 3 green/yellow wires come out on the right side of the dryer back and their terminals are screwed into the chassis at 2 places. So, that's my situation. Should I screw in the green dryer wire to the white terminal, along with the white wire of the cord? *I thought I'd edit this to clarify that I'm installing a 4 wire cord.
Review the whole video again and study the schematic.

I'm not an electrician, and I don't understand the concept of neutral vs. ground, esp. when the two seem to be connected in the dryer. I've carefully reviewed yours and, now probably about a dozen others, none of which gave me an answer. After spending hours on this, I finally decided to try to look up the manual online for this model dryer (it's my mom's, so I was unfamiliar with it). There I got the answer that it seems like you or anyone else knowledgeable could have provided. It said to connect this green ground wire to the middle/neutral terminal when using a 4 prong/wire cord.

Does it make a difference if the red and black wires are switched from the way you are showing it, since they are both 110?
I would say to keep red to red blk to blk, so anyone else does not get confused. Like a service repair man or someone other than you.
So with an original 3 prong Whirlpool Cabrio it's safe with only the pigtailed white wire grounded to the chassis?
my dryer (3 prong attached) was sparking at the door hinges. I opened the top and a green w/ yello stripes wire was not attached to anything. Did it come loose and the exposed wire tip causing sparking or was it always that way?
Sounds like the person that wired up the Cord did not tighten up the screw tight enough, check the other two. WOW! When you hooked the white Wire back to the chassis, did that fix your issue?
the green w/ yellow wire that is exposed looks like it is spliced with the white wire going to the middle post. there is another, smaller green w/yellow stripe wire attached to the dryer frame. I'm not 100% sure but I think it may have been converted years ago to fit this older homes outlet. Sparks just started last week.
Revisit 7:00 in my Video, If you wire the green back to the cabinet and still get sparks then I would call a professional. I dont want to give bogus advice because I am not there to look out for any other factors.

I was given a dryer that came with a four prong wire. My house has a three prong outlet. I don't see a white wire on the dryer. There is, however, a green wire screwed into the frame. Is this the grounding wire or do I still need to wire the neutral to the frame? Thanks in advance

I have the wires connected properly for a 3 to 4 plug but I'm concerned that when I put the metal plate that covers the connections it is touching the green wire. Can I just leave off the plate?
If the green wire is screwed to the chassis then you will be just fine. The plate will become chassis ground when you screw it back on anyway. You do NOT want any other wires (hot wires) touching any part of the chassis.

I have a brand new samsung dryer that does not turn on. I have tested the the cord and this is what I get. When
Testing Neutral to Left terminal I get 240v
Testing Neutral to right terminal I get 0v.
Testing ground to both of the right and left terminals they each get 120v.
I am sure the 0v is what is causing the dryer to not turn on, but I am unsure as what to do to fix the problem. I am assuming faulty power chord?
sure you have them on correct terminals? check the outlet itself also..
