Chromatic aberration is the thing that Arin was talking about.
It also has meaning outside of old televisions. It's a phenomena in optical lenses where different wavelengths of light have different focal points after passing through the lens. Depending on how bad the aberration is, the focal point can be ahead of or behind the optical sensor or film inside the camera, causing that color to be blurry and out-of-focus. It's was also a big issue for telescopes, since they were made for observing tiny points of white light.
And is also a thing he specifically mentioned liking, by name, in Bloodborne. Oh, Arin.

damn, arins explanation on how CRT TVs work... I could be wrong, I'm not an expert on this stuff, but I think that is the first time he explained something complicated in simple terms on the show and actually got it 100% right.
He's an animator. It makes sense that he understands how the technology of his medium works.
@@AlwaysRushesIn CRT TVs aren't something animators study by default, really. he's also a game hardware enthusiast, which is where you get to the real nitty gritty of understanding older displays, especially when you get into dealing with arcade monitors, which he has a few of.

Odin Satanas Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from. To me, it seemed like that decision was so that the creature seemed more unpredictable and “menacing”, I guess. Maybe del Toro thought that if the creature showed too much sentience and intelligence, it would lose its shock factor, I guess. The mystery surrounding the creature was part of its huge appeal.

The phenomenon you are describing is called Chromatic Aberration, Arin. It’s also common in convergence TVs which became obsolete almost as quickly as they came along.

Chromatic aberration is the color fringing an optical lens produces due to it bending light rays of different wavelengths by different amounts. The CRT effect Arin was talking about is known as misconvergence. They do look similar, though, and can be simulated in games using the same techniques.

The minute before hours paper was referring to the clock's time in correlation to the letters on the box. The time was 18:45, if you put the minute before the hours, you get 45:18, in the alphabet the 4th letter is D, the 5th letter is E, and the 18th letter is R, giving you the code DER. This is a fairly good puzzle, but the game completely ruins it by putting a painting with the word MUR, directly to the left of the box. Theoretically, someone could find the umbrella, get the coin from the bottle, use the umbrella to get the coin opening the box puzzle, and then escape simply by looking at the MUR painting and guessing, completely skipping getting the screwdriver pieces, getting the key, turning on the power, etc.
Wow yeah, that "hint" actually fkn destroys everything about the puzzle and that's actually a damn good puzzle.
No, what ruins that particular puzzle is that there's no incentive to properly figure it out. You can literally just rotate through every possible combination until it works. There's no time limit or penalty for failing attempts.
@@zencyn4682 Are you kidding me? There are way too many combinations for anyone unless they're willing to put a very long time into solving this puzzle. There are 6 different digits in the 3 dials. Just to give a little perspective, if the first digit is A, then you'd have to cycle through 6 digits for each of the next letters, that's 6 for A in the 2nd dial, 6 for B in the 2nd dial, etc. The total combinations you can have if you know that A is the first digit is 36. Now, you'd have to do this 6 times for each digit in the 1st dial, giving you a total of 216 combinations. Assuming someone used your method trying combinations AAP to FFU, it would take about 135 combinations before you got to DER. This would take MUCH longer than just looking at painting to the left that says mur, and inferring what it is off that.

that clock very clearly had a latch battery cover, the kind you just push in with your thumb; there was no reason to have to find and assemble a screwdriver to get it open, illustrators of game. at least make it look like the type you need to unscrew.

I've never heard of a CRT being described as having "three guns" inside it before. However, looking online it seems that he's right: there are legitimately things called "electron guns" inside a CRT, which you may know by their more common term, "electron emitters".

I'm pretty sure I figured this thing out. Minutes before hours. The clock says 6:45. But if it's minutes before hours, it would be 45:6. So, that puzzle has 3, let's call them, "locks" with letters on it. First letter is the fourth letter on the first lock (D), second letter is the fifth letter on the second lock (E) and third letter is the sixth letter on the third lock (Which, I guess should be R, although hard to tell since Arin never changed that lock 6 times). Difficult to explain, but maybe you know what I mean.

Arin was trying to say "chromatic aberration", the effect seen in telescopes and cameras that use many lenses, the varying refraction of different frequencies of light means that colors will display some red on one side and some violet on the other

The main character really loves pointing out the obvious.
It seems silly, but some people do actually need everything spelt out to them like that.
I know a guy who still gets lost in a game when the objective has a giant, glowing circle on the screen and tells you exactly what to do in the corner. It amazes me how some people have survived for so long without forgetting how to breathe.
