as soon as me and my sister and brother got old enough my step dad cheated on my mom and made a baby on her and left. he literally raised us since we were toddlers. it sucks when your biological father isn’t there and then your step dad leaves too. it makes you feel like you’re so much of a burden that you’re not meant to have a father. no parent step or not should abandon their kids. especially if you’ve spent time raising and taking care of them. you might not see them as your kids but they definitely see you as a father. if you don’t wanna be dad in any way shape or form maybe don’t date or marry women with children.
Imagine if it is your step father who actually sticks around but emotionally abandons you because you're a strange little boy and then he has 2 girls with your real mom and dotes on them like little flowers...my real dad died of cancer years later never really knew him tho, and grandpa had a heart attack while I was overseas
The step dad raised her as a kid with her mum but then when the mum died he abandoned her to fend for herself for 10 years. Edit: when I first made this comment I was very early and people were confused, so I was just helping them out.
Grief makes people do strange things. A good friend and his sister were raised by their paternal grandparents after the early death of their mother. Their father was so overwhelmed by the loss of his wife (who was his childhood sweetheart) that shortly after his wife’s death he failed to pick his children up from his parents home where they went after school, and disappeared. He rapidly drank himself into an early grave without speaking to his children or parent ever again. Prior to his wife’s death he had a good career and idyllic family life.
He is in as much pain as she is, but he is the cause of his, and hers. The regular ‘companion’ has helped to ease the pain in the short term as he had someone to talk to (‘good listener’), that’s why he reluctantly accepted Lily, and he then perhaps realised that talking with Lily would not just ease the pain for a short while but could help them both for good. He was a good guy that ‘fooked up’ big time and was so disappointed in himself he found it too hard to go back and sort things out. He past ‘wrong’ just showed up on his doorstep, and he was brave enough to deal with it. Well written.
well, that is a judgment, based upon a tiny window of the lives of each of them ....and there is a bit said about what brought her to be where she was, but nothing was said about what brought him to where he was ... what was his life like with her mother? what was his life like with his own mother? It would be just as easy to create another different moment from their lives, entirely consistent with everything portrayed here, which would make most of you feel sympathy for him and disgust with her ....in a whole lifetime, individuals have many different facets, they are never simple ......
A lot of these short films could definitely become full length ones. Like this one. A movie about an estranged step-daughter and step-father. Their lives, lived independently, suddenly become entangled by a twist of fate. They try to repair a damaged bond as they come to realize that things are not always what they seem.
What?! 12 minutes?! I need MORE! It's one of those short films that has you glued to the screen and ends on the most interesting moment. Thank you! P.S. The actor that plays a dad is so handsome. I actually expected some balding overweight man and a 'It's Mini's first time' tale. Was pleasantly surprised.
Why? I would hardly say that it's a dream any kid has. So to get in this kind of profession you have to be some sort of a victim at one point. It's a type of last kind of option not a goal to achieve, even if it may end up providing a miraculous safety net in some cases. I would bet that the examples where this is something good are way way in the minority as compared to the examples where it's a dead end situation. I mean, even in this short they both are broken, hence why they end up touching this industry.
@@michaelallman8481 What did i say and what do you take in... No dream profession in the eyes of anyone specially when are a kid is to prostitute themselves. They end up doing that as result of they being a victim at one point in their life. If it's some specific abuse or some environment result, being forced by others or just life and what options one has available. Whatever may be is not an ideal situation which leads to that destination. then the way people develop, how people react to harshness differs too. Some may get destroyed while others may get empowered. So in this manner some of those people may see prostituting themselves as something good, noble even. But i would say they are more than likely in a minority and pretty sure are just lying to themselves.
@@Analysis_Paralysis Or did he end up admitting to her that he accidently killed her mother and didn't know what to do, so he fled. But then felt guilt and was lonely and got his comfort from the initial escort. Explained that he loved the step daughter but never wanted to have to tell her the truth because then he would have to kill her so he's not found out and would not have to pay back the insurance money. Then he chokes her while sobbing and telling her how sorry he is. However, she stabs him in the gut with a knife she carries with her for protection, unfortunately he was still able to kill her. And he rolls off her and dies slowly laughing and crying at his situation. But then smiles as he takes his last breath because he can finally stop feeling. Then a dude with a wizard hat walks in... the end.
It is indeed disgusting, but also sad seeing apparently her stepfather raised her like his own daughter for some years before her mother died and he left for 10 years. It makes me think about how there are many step-parents that do not take responsibility for their step-children in situations like in the film and in turn cause a troubled life path for the children left behind. Personally I have been to many orphanages where children were left in the same way as in the film. I think this is the biggest social comment of the film. It doesn't give solutions though.
You can tell she's still love her dad even though she get's abandoned and she says 'i might' means she want to forgive him and wanted to give him a second chance.
This is actually really beautiful, they both have begun to find what they were actually looking for from this transaction. She wants answers and resolve from the abandonment of her father figure, he wants forgiveness and companionship and someone to hear his answers. When she said "What makes you think I want help", in my heart i said 'because we all do'. This is a perfect illustration of the fragililty and hurt that all human beings feel and that we all are searching for a way to mend.
Not all humans do, maybe lots, but there definitely some out there with a lot more inner strength while others go through HIDDEN living hells.. It's about the degree/severity of it.
I want more! These two actors are so compelling and the story is fascinating. Audrey Gagneux is so gifted at natural dialogue that propels the story like in a play but without any of the stiffness of stage dialogue.
@@almac9203 Yeah, the actual age gap between the actors Barry Ward and Tanya Reynolds, is only something like 11 years (Reynolds was born in 1991, and Ward seems to have been born in 1980 or 81, according to info on his IMDb page). This short was made/released in 2019, making Ward only around 38 or 39. I think his character is meant to be a bit older, and Reynolds' character is meant to be several years younger than Reynolds' actual age (since she looks younger, and has played characters younger than her age). So maybe the stepdad is mid-40s and "Lily" is 21. But if you ask me, Ward doesn't look over 40 there (he just has gray hair), although maybe we could believe Reynolds is 21~ there. Made me wonder, how old was Lily's mother supposed to be? Was she a teenaged mom? I guess this kind of casting is very common in film/TV/theater - casting an actor playing the mother or father who is only like 15 years older than the actor/actress playing their onscreen child.

Tell the truth before she's too old and is upset by how long you kept things a secret. It's the same thing with adoption, it's best if they always know or else they'll have issues about it.
Just raise her with the most love you can. Show her what real parental love is. I would let her know when she's past the age of majority. Try your best to not spoil her though. Knew this girl once with who was adopted (only child), was spoiled, found out late and used this an an excuse to mess her life up. If you daughter learns morals and love from you, much less likely this will even occur. Good luck, God bless.

I agree with you. Lily says something like "you had people who loved you, but you left them behind". He left his wife and stepdaughter, and after the woman's death he didn't have the courage to get back and help the child.
@@kriskelvin5775 I think the writer(s) implicitly wanted to present that the death of this man's wife caused him to just abandon, not just his step-daughter, but his own family...parents, siblings as well. They could not explicitly narrate this because he did not want to articulate what he had done, and was, indeed, internally covering up his misdeeds by drinking, such that he didn't recognize her even on his phone. The fact that @Anandi Ganguly "...NEEDS ANSWERS", shows she is as shallow and weak as the father character. But at least the father was going to face reality, it would seem, at the end of the story. I thought the exact same thing when I saw the heels. Like oh God why? But then I thought maybe she wanted to look presentable & not spotted as an escort.
Something similar happened in my country. I should say worse. Some friends recommended a girl from an escort service to their friend. And he did avail the service, just to find out that the woman they recommended him was his own daughter. I still can't imagine what their reaction was when they met each other.
Well, if it was like an episode of the tv show Criminal Minds, not good. The daughter became an escort to get back at her Dad for cheating on her mom with escorts; he end up leaving them. Yes, she became an escort so that she can killed the married men that are her clients. However, she only kills the married male clients. She did not felt any remorse; actually thought she was doing the world a favor. Eventually, her father hired her as an escort without knowing who she was.

as soon as me and my sister and brother got old enough my step dad cheated on my mom and made a baby on her and left. he literally raised us since we were toddlers. it sucks when your biological father isn’t there and then your step dad leaves too. it makes you feel like you’re so much of a burden that you’re not meant to have a father. no parent step or not should abandon their kids. especially if you’ve spent time raising and taking care of them. you might not see them as your kids but they definitely see you as a father. if you don’t wanna be dad in any way shape or form maybe don’t date or marry women with children.
I hope you will be able to express exactly how you feel to him and start healing. Hugs.

@@Abstractivity_ No, her mom died. The man said it himself. Didn't you watch the whole video?
Grief makes people do strange things. A good friend and his sister were raised by their paternal grandparents after the early death of their mother. Their father was so overwhelmed by the loss of his wife (who was his childhood sweetheart) that shortly after his wife’s death he failed to pick his children up from his parents home where they went after school, and disappeared. He rapidly drank himself into an early grave without speaking to his children or parent ever again. Prior to his wife’s death he had a good career and idyllic family life.

What?
Everyone once has a major mistake in life.
Well said...
well, that is a judgment, based upon a tiny window of the lives of each of them ....and there is a bit said about what brought her to be where she was, but nothing was said about what brought him to where he was ... what was his life like with her mother? what was his life like with his own mother? It would be just as easy to create another different moment from their lives, entirely consistent with everything portrayed here, which would make most of you feel sympathy for him and disgust with her ....in a whole lifetime, individuals have many different facets, they are never simple ......
Seemingly, there is no maximum to the damage family can do to itself.
A lot of these short films could definitely become full length ones. Like this one. A movie about an estranged step-daughter and step-father. Their lives, lived independently, suddenly become entangled by a twist of fate. They try to repair a damaged bond as they come to realize that things are not always what they seem.
10 years and they're still his screen saver now that is love

My only complaint with these videos is that the stories are always so good I’m always left wanting more when they end 😂
That’s why they’re so good: long enough to draw you in, short enough not to fumble an ending.

I appreciate the fact that Lily/Laura is not portrayed as a victim for her profession.
@@somnorila9913So escorts are victims because escorting is not a kid's dream profession?

I have a stepfather. This made me shudder in disgust at that thought. Overall, though, the film was compelling.
@@shammysingh8295 Im good bro thanks for asking
It is indeed disgusting, but also sad seeing apparently her stepfather raised her like his own daughter for some years before her mother died and he left for 10 years. It makes me think about how there are many step-parents that do not take responsibility for their step-children in situations like in the film and in turn cause a troubled life path for the children left behind. Personally I have been to many orphanages where children were left in the same way as in the film. I think this is the biggest social comment of the film. It doesn't give solutions though.
Hilbert Braspenning because it wouldn’t have the same weight, I think. I like the fact they don’t give us a resolution. It personalises it.
Out of interest, how would you have reacted when the door opens and you find out? Run? Slap? Ask for explanations?

You can tell she's still love her dad even though she get's abandoned and she says 'i might' means she want to forgive him and wanted to give him a second chance.
This is actually really beautiful, they both have begun to find what they were actually looking for from this transaction. She wants answers and resolve from the abandonment of her father figure, he wants forgiveness and companionship and someone to hear his answers. When she said "What makes you think I want help", in my heart i said 'because we all do'. This is a perfect illustration of the fragililty and hurt that all human beings feel and that we all are searching for a way to mend.
Lovely insight, thank you 🥰
Not all humans do, maybe lots, but there definitely some out there with a lot more inner strength while others go through HIDDEN living hells.. It's about the degree/severity of it.

@@maggied4802 is he old enough to he her stepfather? Seems a bit young. They look like they could be a couple.

Do your best bro.

Even she says that he had people who cared for him but he left them, which makes it seem like he left them while she was alive. I NEED ANSWERS.
