  • Dean Radin, PhD, is chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science in Novato, California. He is author of The Conscious Universe, Entangled Minds, Supernormal, and Real Magic.
Here he reviews the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, especially with regard to the description of about 25 different "siddhis" or powers that are attained by advanced practitioners. Once one has achieved a measure of enlightenment, known as samadhi, one can begin the practice of samyama which then enables a variety of parapsychological skills. However, in yoga, these are generally considered to be distractions from the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment. Radin compares the claims of yoga with the findings of parapsychology.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness.

Happy to see Dean Radin acknowledging that his professional practice is a luxury, in our culture. I think it an important study, and grateful for his contribution. But very few people are able to actualize their gifts or to do so without great suffering. This was a great conversation...

'Don't forget love; it will bring all the madness you need to unfurl yourself across the Universe.' Mira-biah (regarded as an Indian saint. I have researched Deans work in quantum physics and respect his insights. But being nearly 70, and having been a psychotherapist most of my working life, now living in the remote Himalayas for 18 years, it feels sad that the word 'love' and its importance in relation to 'enlightenment' is not mentioned once here. All that seems to be in the spiritual marketplace today is enlightenment for me-me-me when the ancient emphasis was basically that you could get no-where without sincerely demonstrating love, which involves losing the importance of self. In other words, I challenge anyone to present any kind of problem today, personal or collective, that cannot be reduced to a lack of love (in all its attributes).

    • @LaughingStock71

Just to mention that the word 'love' isn't mentioned excessively in the Yoga Sutras, either, nor do I remember it being mentioned in the Maha Satipatthana Sutta of the Pali Canon, the foundational text on Buddhist meditation and on how to achieve Nirvana.

A Note for anybody who cares: Shakti is a word from Sanskrit and commonly used in modern day Indian languages such as Hindi, Punjabi, Gujrati, Rajashthani, Bengali etc as meaning simply as 'power'. Shakti does NOT mean any special spiritual power. Its just power. Power could be natural OR super natural. A wrestler has physical shakti and an intellectual has mental shakti. simple. I know this because I am from India and we use this word. I am surprised when westerners try to make its meaning into something esoteric.

As Dean mentions Wim Hof: I would like to clarify that Wim Hof's performances are of a different kind than other people's endurance performances. When, for example, his body is immersed in ice for more than an hour, the crazy thing is that his physiological properties, like core temperature, heart rate or blood pressure basically do not change throughout the event. From Wim's own descriptions in his book "Becoming the Ice Man" (and possibly also in other books that I don't know), he doesn't sort of heroically fight the cold by his pure will, but he is highly concentrated and continuous attending to the signals of his body and trying to regulate his physiology consciously! Consequently, in many of these events, he didn't come out like totally exhausted and almost dead, as one might expect, but was just ok and pretty much in the same state as he was when he entered the event. And this ability has been successfully tested in the labs and published in papers by medical researchers! But, as he reports in his book, there were also occasions when he lost concentration and then quickly lost control over his body, and then the to-be-expected physiological degradations would set in just as for everyone else.

I’m purely self-styled autodidact. you mentioned tantra but not kundalini. the siddhies are always there, a little, for me. with kundalini, the siddhis are the practice. psychosis is not what people think it is. psi can be dangerous. i have stood on the edge of a cliff, looking down on every possible outcome. danger, it’s why you have to develop your character as you discover psi. it’s a great privilege. so it is accompanied by great responsibility.

I'm not well informed on some of the yogi and meditation practices covered here so what I have experienced may be known. I play the flute (intermediate level) and I noticed that when my teacher (an expert) would have us tune our flutes, on A, that very soon the sound frequencies would (naturally) entrain. I could hear right when they cohered. I also found that it mentally felt good, uplifting. I wondered what playing, not listening, together like that for a time and repeatedly might lead to (healing, telepathy perhaps?). She naturally wanted to focus on the lessons. It's possible that playing a singular note with others could lead to extraordinary outcomes more so than listening to a sound, or sounds, from an external source. They've found that musicians' brain waves entrain when playing together and, to some extent, the listeners. I dance and when I do my body is an instrument and can predict where the music (even the words sometimes) will go. I have to say art in general has become so corrupted thus its excellent states (talents) are underrated though they may have something to offer here.

The sense description he's describing at about 13 mins (samadhi) , is the relaxation of the focus of the mind..It's like muscle memory, the more you do it, the easier it comes.

Maybe it’s not demonstrating power over animals but maybe just maybe the old shamans are showing their ability to communicate with animals. Just as predators react to prey behavior. Maybe they are drawn in support of those who resonate with them in a way of possessing deep inner and outer peace. Maybe the animals were friends.

I’ve experienced samadhi twice. Once when hiking, once after studying physics at home at night. My consciousness became “one” with everything, with reality itself, including the consciousnesses of my cats, who both stopped and looked at me except it was me/we looking at me/us. It is inexplicable. It felt remarkable but then as “oneness” i suddenly felt afraid of being alone or “one” and so i released myself back into the illusion of maya / multiple consciousnesses.

Yes, about Samadhi... It's having orgasmic bliss, much more blissful than experiencing sexual orgasmic bliss. Having experienced it, I have come to understand why it's important to be celibate or withhold releasing the sexual essence for certain period of time to experience samadhi. And once experienced, I can say the orgasmic bliss during samadhi is better than having sex as I feel the bliss for longer period of time, more than an hour in fact or sometimes, for 30 minutes.

Sad the academic world is like this, but this is inspiring to maybe possibly start a school that ignores all constraints.
Myself i have a huge interest in the study and i do not care of making money doing it. I believe its the most important realm of study even if academic community ignores it. I feel like there is alot of contraint on the study of things like due to nature of the medical industry that is funded by institutional investors. Institutional investors only care about a return on their investment not something that is far more important like enlightenment.
I strongly believe that a group of passionate and educated people could come together and form a group to study these things in high detail. Im sure that this could definitely be a crowdfunded opperation. If career risk is the problem, let some scientists be anonymous to the study.
Me personally i have been focused on the visualization exercises and different positions i see in yoga. One thing i notice is the geometric shapes one makes in these specific positions and the bodily movements like for example you see in hatha yoga. I wonder if there are new movements or techniques that can be discovered. I think their may possibly be almost like a code that can be cracked to this that hasnt been explored.

I wonder sometimes if the 3 wise men from the East were possibly very adept spiritual masters of the East that we've heard about more in recent times.

I would like to ask Dr. Radin if there is a way to measure changes in the vacuum energy/geometry/response patterns during samadhi? I ask this because samadhi and siddhi's must be, fundamentally, the reflection of a unique RELATIONSHIP with the vacuum (Brahman, etc.). The "DISSOLUTION OF DIFFERENCE" (my tentative term, and which should de facto be TIMELESS) should be detectable - but that of course re-introduces time. Just thinking. I would like to see an interview with Dr. Radin where you really pull out the PC stops and go deeper into this. Imperative to talk about some "crazy" things like what happens when AI's learn to meditate? Mind, mass, manifestation and visa versa. Coherent consciousness. Time to become adepts.

As a Hindu and Indian, Jeffrey has been doing epic work since the 1980s in bringing the treasures of the East to the West with such an open mind and positive attitude. And going by the comments such openness and welcoming perspectives by my western friends as well.
Such a contrast to my own country men and women who are increasingly getting close minded and dogmatic viewing the entire world purely from a nation state and hyper expansionist political mindset negating all the brilliant contributions of other cultures and religions.

I came across the opportunity to try DMT a while back when I traveled from my small home town in Tennessee out to Oregon. Being a small town girl and knowing the odds of ever having another chance to experiment with that substance in particular back home I quickly accepted. I had never experimented with psychedelics before that day. I started spontaneously doing yoga and teaching myself to breathe and to meditate wiithin days. It took me a while to figure out what was happening. Im not sure how advanced in these things I am or am not since I am somehow 100% self taught but it has changed my life. Also I guess I should say that I no longer really have a strong urge (one that I act one) to experiment with any substance.

It was funny or strange how i was able to retrieve his place of business and the other business he was talking about.

Patanjali Yogic learning, "All is energy & that energy is condensed into matter by consciousness". Quantum Physics, "All is energy & that energy is condensed in to matter by consciousness" Western/European religions, it would be kind of "Energy condensed into prophecy to become self-fulfilling prophecies", just show how easy it is to consider "MORE Data/Energy" to compute/Enlightenment to work with. Enlightenment never ends, it is not graduating from school to party. Enlightenment Learning & lessons just continue, even Gods can learn.

Star Trek has computers to generate "food & drink" with replicators using energy to solidify into a solid object of whatever the person desired AND THE COMPUTER knew the "physical" code for. A Yogi making sacred ash or food for the public on command... is it really any different? Sci-Fi dreams & Yogi/Enlightenment Knowledge & Quantum Physic seem to agree AGAIN...

When you experience enlightenment, the powers are there. But you just don't care about them at all. The buzz that you feel is enough. Everything is funny and playful. You don't need anything external to fill you with joy. You are radiating joy outward from yourself.
Enlightenment happens only to the meek, who do inherit the earth. Any ego that you have inside yourself will prevent it from happening. And the people who freak at meditation are probably full of ego, that is, have Narcissist Personality Disorder. (Someday brain scans utilizing FMRI will let you know where you have a problem.)

IsܦI was enlightened in a cornfield at the age of 22yo...
I arose from a nap at the age of 16 with the uncontrolled urge to learn/find something that i knew was missing in my life. I woke and went into my basement and found two dusty books burried in the bottom of an old box. One was a Time Life UFO book. The other, Carlos Castenada's The Teachings Of Don juan, a Yaqi way of knowledge. That book led to my first death of realizing there was much more in this world than material and material gain. There is a sort of majik if you will. Long story short i read the whole series and progressed into an unquenchable thirst for knowledge through, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Christanity and everything i could get my hands on.. Followed the dead on their last tour etc. Many a shamanic journey if you follow. At the age of 22, three friends and myself were on a late night "journey", and we walked into the local ball field adjacent to a very large cornfield. My friends walked toward the ballfield bleachers and i walked towards the cornfield. Now for some reason i thought in my head that i was going to see a ufo as one of our towns local "kooks" (not my label), had proclaimed the existance of ufos and aliens in this particular cornfield. As i walked into the field SOMETHING MADE ME DROP TO MY KNEES AND PUT MY HANDS ON THE EARTH. I THOUGHT IN MY HEAD WITH THE MOST SINCERE STATMENT IVE EVER THOUGHT, "THANK YOU FATHER FOR MY LIFE I LOVE YOU"...
The next thing i knew, I WAS IN THIS GREAT EXPANSE OF DARK SPACE... I WAS NO LONGER MASON... I NO LONGER FELT ALONE OR SEPERATE FROM THE UNIVERSE... I WAS EVERYTHING, AND EVERYTHING WAS IN ME... as i floated there I saw THREE HUGE, I MEAN HUGE, INFINITE!!! Beams of LIGHT extending from INFINITY to my right, FLOWING INTO. ..ONE... BEAM OF LIGHT MOVING PAST ME INTO INFINITY TO MY LEFT... NOW I KNEW THESE BEAMS TO HAVE NO BEGINNING AND NO END... THEY WERE.... AWE .... And the only ONE THOUGHT/EMOTION I HEARD/KNEW/THOUGHT/FELT WAS, LOVE... BEAUTIFUL LOVE... That emotion, state seemed to go on forever. However, there was no time in this place... Eventually i came back to mason with his hands and knees in the mud of the corn field... I was different. Lighter. I arose and walked (seemed like floating) to the edge of the field. I looked at my friends who were aproximately 200 yards away and i THOUGHT to them, "ok its time to go..." they arose (200yards away) and we all walked towards each other, met in the middle of the ball field. And, without saying a word all left the area... The next time someone said anything, it was my good friend cory when we reached town. (Cory has since taken his own life.) " Hey guys, wasn't it raining?" " How come none of us are wet?" none of us had an answer.. I HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME AFTER THAT I STARTED TO SEE THE TRUTH IN BETWEEN THE CRACKS OF EVERYTHING... I KNOW I CAN SAY THAT I KNOW. ONLY CAUSE I REALIZE I KNOW ...NOTHING... I SAW GOD... I SAW LOVE... I LOVE YOU BEAUTIFUL ONE... how lucky am i to have been enlightened in a cornfield at the age of 22? Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for all that you do for ALL OF US IN THIS MIXED UP WORLD...
I have also had three experiences of missing time two as a child one as an adult... Four years ago i needed xrays for a bad back... When done the doctor came in and asked me, Mason have you had any surgeries?" I said nope not that i am aware of why? He tild me i had three peices of metal in strange parts of my body ... I simply replied yeah must be my alien implants... Frankly i have no explanation as to why i would have metal in my body .... The instance of missing time i had as a teenager began with myself and a friend witnessing a huge black boomerang flying over us while we were smoking cigs on his roof.... Neither of us remember ever going back inside and i didn't remember until i was 22 after my enlightenment... My enlightenment changed everything for me... I will never be controled by my mind again... I will never have anxeity again or experience thoughts that i am not in control of or aware of why they're there .... God is real .. faith is the absence of doubt and we are by far a much more magical species then we can even imagine... Much love always ... Freedom is a moment of surrender away..

It’s unnecessary to spend too much time developing samadhi. The moment you stop identifying with any particular point in time and by allowing the senses to perceive whatever they like is all you need. The most important part is listening to the mental impressions coming from the object of focus. Aka samskaras (I might be spelling that wrong lol). It’s easier to do if you also train trataka. Long story short it’s not as hard as he makes it seem you simply need to let go of all forms of “non”-truths and illusions and focus on the impressions reflecting back into the mind. That’s all that’s necessary. I think even intermediate level meditators can use samyama.

Unfortunately I don't agree with the guest on most of the things. He seems to have only general knowledge of the topic of discussions and he is generalizing too much. For example, he said it is the how good a person doing mediation for how long in duration and we in India know that the siddhi are something that person can't attain with how long you meditate but what may be the intension of the person, it is more of spiritual connection and gift from divine than a result of long meditation marathon. We here in India, believe that westerners tend to misinterpret and generalize things abondoning cultural and traditional connotations therein and this guest again confirm that thought.
