  • Latvia has a sizeable Russian speaking minority -- a legacy of the time when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. They have been a target of the Kremlin's propaganda machine in a bid to undermine support for Ukraine. Our reporter Killian Bayer visited a town close to the Russian border to see what impact Kremlin propaganda is having.

One big problem with the former Soviet Russians who remained in Latvia after Latvia regained its rightful independence from the USSR is that they have been spectacularly maladaptive. There are people born in Latvia to those families, who have lived more than forty years of their lives in Latvia and, yet, can't speak a single word of Latvian. Not one word. Can you imagine being born, raised, and educated in, for example, the United States or the UK and not being able to speak a single word of English? It's a phenomenon that indicates a very special kind of ignorance. Those people believe everything they are told by Russian State Media without question. If Putin's TV told them that Latvia had a secret plot to irradiate all Russians in eastern Latvia and then feed their children to sharks, they'd believe ALL of it. It's very difficult to integrate people whose brains work in that way.

@@ssir5927 It isn't so much about the language itself, as it is about where people's political loyalties lay. Native Russian speakers in Latvia who actually consider themselves to be Latvians should obviously be treated as equals and should speak whatever language they want. But native Russian speakers in Latvia who are nationally Russian, or at least consider themselves to be, can be a problem if they are loyal to the Kremlin. They can serve as an excuse for Russia to invade, using the exact same "liberation" rhetoric that they used in Georgia and Ukraine. So if any of them really want to live in Russia so badly, it would be infinitely easier for all sides if they simply moved to Russia, than it would be for Russia to come to them.
