Given the absurd amount of class division, it could be an option for riot to make a scaled down version of Path of Exile pasive tree for each class, in the sense, an ability or class tree where, depending where you are from, you start in a different part of the tree and gives you easier access to what would be more thematic to your origin, but still not limiting you out from what that class might do in other places. Would be a hella lot of work, but i mean, they have a hella lot of work to do eitherway and they already have the lore so that part is semi covered

That won't work. It'll be hell to balance. It's not like Guild Wars 2 where races have different origins. Some regions in runeterra have concurrent races. So it's better to just make it uniform and restrict some races in some regions like demacia.

One thing worth mentioning is crafting classes! Being a Demacian crafter would be worlds apart from a Shuriman or Ionian crafter, and I think there's a unique way make each crafter feel interesting besides what kind of equipment they can make. Perhaps having each nation represent a discipline and giving crafters the ability learn parts of other disciplines, and create their own unique recipes in addition to standard equipment or item making!

  • @CFHM_HarrisonD
    @CFHM_HarrisonD 2 года назад +464

I imagine they'd start with the class archetypes directly from league - marksman, assassin, juggernaut, etc and then build 'prestige' or 'subclasses' out from there. If you wanted to bring in the region pride, even better! For example, rolling a fighter would give you a core set of abilities but then you could go to Freljord to train as a berserker, Demacia to train as a knight, or Noxus to train as a legionaire. Assassins could go to Ionia to train as a ninja or Demacia to train as a mageseeker. Mages could go to ixtal to train as an elementalist, Freljord to train as a shaman, and so much more.

The way I see it with the vast amount of classes I can see riot doing something similar to Maplestory. There's the 5 core classes which are warrior/mage/assassin/archer/(pirate/gunner) but if you notice maplestory has like 40+ playable classes. What they did is basically reskin one of the core classes to create a totally new class but they still maintain its core weapon.

    • @Haruchon2
      @Haruchon2 2 года назад +1

Yes! this is what I was about to comment. I play Maple and I can say that this system works wonders. It's not even needed to "reskin" the core class, nowadays the 40+ classes Maplestory has are basically all unique on its own way, it obviously will take a very very long time to get all 40 classes up and running with all of them having it's unique playstyle, but theres absolutely no reason to release all of them AT ALL. In my honest opinion, 5-10 classes could make the game have a strong baseline, similar to what Lost Ark had at the moment of global release, and then slowly adding new classes and maybe even reworking certain parts of already existing classes, alongside expansions and new content. This is the apporach Maplestory took over the past 10 years and my god let me tell you that nowadays having 40+ classes to choose from is VERY wild and sometimes overwhelming but also VERY interesting and feels very unique. Sometimes you even have this feeling that *THAT* class was made for you.

How they handle the factions is something i'm interested in. I'm kind of hoping they go for more of a reputation approach and allow you to earn/lose rep based off actions you take. I kind of want them to let us all start without a faction and let us gravitate towards the one(s) we like. Balancing the rewards would be hell though. I feel like they would all have to be cosmetic.
For Vastaya, i'm hoping they don't try to limit them so they have things they can add in the future. Just add them and add more options as time goes on.

If anything these classes could be subclasses of the larger, broader class, for example, you start as warrior and to become an enforcer you'd have to talk to maybe a recruiter in piltover, etc. Each class doesn't have to branch far from the main class, each subclass could each have a couple special skills and passive effects. Not necessarily an entirely new skill tree because that might be too much work for them, but having different gameplay expression for, let's say a demacian rogue and a bilgewater rogue would definitely be a step in a good direction

I feel like a somewhat Guild Wars 2 character creation style could work for this game. Each GW2 race has their own starting area, and within that area the choices you make during creation shape your personal story until all of the "personal" stories merge into the main storyline towards the end of the base game. No stat differences between the actual races but the class you pick changes what armor and weapons you can use, and later class specializations add weapons each class can use. Per class, each weapon gives you 5 different skills and then you can choose 5 more skills depending on what spec trees you go down. There's so much more and I'm a pretty casual GW2 player, but I love the system compared to something like WoW. The personal stories that stem from your choices during creation have several branching paths that all end up back in the same place, but you still feel like your choices mean something. I also feel like this could work well for the whole class/origin issue you mentioned. Maybe depending on your starting location and class, you get access to different weapons which each have their own skills, although that could get a bit complicated with the sheer number of potential starting locations. (all I want is to either be able to play a Lunari right from the start or a cool ass vastaya, and if Riot can pull this off I'm anticipating the best character creator to ever exist)

Also the fact that people can randomly be born with a specific kind of magic regardless of where they are from (Lux-light, Annie-fire, Rell-metal, Taliyah-Earth) they could be a cool mage class option, there's also the region incentive ones like Elemental Magic in Ixtal, Earth/Sand bending in Shurima, Electric/Wind magic in Ionia. Being a something bender due to being born with magical ability regardless of where you are from is something that makes sense in this universe. Also technically the sentinels of light are located on multiple places of Runeterra if we go by the ruination event, so sentinels can also be in Piltover and other places.

    • @ShaylaWroe
      @ShaylaWroe 2 года назад +9

An interesting idea for how classes could work is your skills being based on the type of weapon you wield rather than a set archetype like warrior/mage. It could be similar to the Souls series were weapon classes like greatsword, curved sword, axe, etc. could level up separately to your character. Character levels would let you increase your stats while weapon level would unlock more skills for that weapon type. Not sure how difficult that would be to implement or balance but it sounds like a good way to allow lots of player freedom and customization regardless of what race/region you pick!

    • @DrLeingod

    • @auminne8500
      @auminne8500 2 года назад +17

That just sounds like a good way to funnel specific classes into only using a certain weapon type because it does the most damage/dps and keep people from using other weapons cause like in wow when weapon skills were a thing you could get this really good axe but oh wait, your axe proficiency is 24/250 so its pretty much useless to you until you level it up, so now you just run around killing random mobs for hours just to level it up so its actually useful. I'd rather just have it be the class has the same abilities but it can use different weapons that fit that class, maybe change the animations for the abilities for such weapons at most but having a new world 2.0 situation doesn't sound good. On top of that Ghostcrawler already said they are focusing more on less customization for better balance and gameplay so I doubt they would implement that type of mechanic but I could be wrong though I doubt thats the case. Also I don't know if you're saying that what race/region is chosen to start as affects what weapons you can use but they also said that races are pretty much cosmetic only and wont effect what class you can play and such, so I doubt they would lock certain weapons if you were a yordle than a human.

      no.
I say that, because a lot of games do that. FF14 is basically that exactly waht you are saying. Not saying its a bad system, but... I don't think it has to be simply locked to weapons. They can simply lock it to classes, that can be swapped. I honeslty think its best, if you had to do side quests to unlock all sorts of different classes, and you can set up alt skills from those classes after you leveld them or completing their class quest. This way, you can still use what ever weapon you want, without having to be locked into a class by a weapon.
I alweays hated being locked into a class or weapon. My problem with WOW and FF14. I want to use the waepon I want, with the class I want. Not have to play around the limited choice weapons of the class, or play the class the weapon is locked into.

I think it would be (kind of impractical but) really cool to make a class evolution system. Kinda like in ffxiv but more expansive. Like you can only pick from 6 basic classes when you start, but you can choose what you evolve the class into at a later point.
Let's say you choose the Mage class to start. You reach a certain level or story event and you get a quest telling you to go find someone for further training. It then prompt you to go to one of multiple options, which option you choose would then determine what your class evolves into. Like if you go to Demacia as a mage you willingly get the magic sucked out of you or something, are given a special rock, and become a mageseeker, but if you to Ionia instead you become a Spirit Mage, and if you go to Piltover you become a Hextech/Chemtech Engineer.

You don't have to think traditionally when it comes to classes. I wanna see them try the route of ditching classes for the most part and just making weapons and armor with totally unique attributes that define your playstyle. I'm someone who really likes when you can mess around with wacky builds. It sounds wrong, but I'm very sure most of us would still end up building an identity around our favorite builds.
If you want progression, I really like what old old Spiral Knights has, where equipment is placed into tiers of power. The low tier items you start off with would be very straightforward, but as you upgrade your gear they may split off into different upgrade paths, so gearing becomes increasingly deep.

I think that classes could be done in a way with the classes used in league of legends (assassin, marksman, mage, fighter, support) and based on your origin could have subclasses with different equipment associated with them. For example say you're an assassin from Ionia, so your sub class options could be kinkou or shadow order assassins, based on what abilities and equipment your character uses.

@@fitmotheyap I don't think they'd have to balance that many subclasses, since they'd be separated only by equipment and abilities but still have the basic perks of that class (staying on the example, both kinds of ionian assassins would have the same base stats and base abilities, with the only difference being what they wear and the utility they provide via movement abilities [kinkou being more supportive, while shadow order being agressive])
Imo it would be the simplest way to introduce a class system, but to each their own i guess.

I think the sub class thing would be a bit too complicated and would mean that there are like 6+ different versions of assassins among other things. I think instead it would be interesting if you started as the "subclass" and you need to go to the other subclass area to become your main class. So for instance, you start as a Kinkou ninja subclass and you go to the Shadow Order subclass area to become an assassin.
You could even go a bit further and allow players to mix and match kinda like how Ashes of Creation will in that say, you start as a Kinkou ninja but then you go to one of the tank subclass areas and learn that set of skills to allow you to mix them and essentially end up with something like Shen, a ninja that is a tank.

the only problem with having different subclasses depending on the origin is a bad balancing act [which given how League itself is balanced, you can see would be an issue]

24:30 I wanna see a cinematic of where Azir arrives alone to a battlefield in the Shuriman desert where he'd be facing an army. The commander of the army would ask him something along the lines of "You came alone to beg for the lives of your people? That's quite noble of you, but it's not going to happen." Then Azir would just summon an army of sand soldiers with a movement of his hand while replying "My will is the will of Shurima. It shall once again, stretch to the horizons." I love your idea of flavoring the same classes into different region specific variants and think the guild wars style of elite specializations is a good reference. For maybe the early levels you learn basic skills that everyone in that class can keep, but as they progress in levels and regions players earn skill points by gaining favor from said region. They can then use those points in skill treed for that region specific "subclass" (vanguard, beserker, blademaster, etc) that way by the time the entire game comes out you don't need five different warrior classes but you can have one warrior spec into all the different types. Obviously for balance purposes they can only use one tree at a time.
This will allow people to also have their own micro communities based on their overall classes as well as their favorite variants. The playstyles are varied and unique but also require the player to work for them in a satisfying way as they complete each regions story mode.
A lot of players love having a single character they invest everything into but aesthetic players like me will likely buy extra character slots so they can specifically have a combo they like. I would love to have a vastayan shadow ninja (in this example let's flavor it as the general rouge class) eventually they can grind piltover points to use the skills of a warden sniper or lunari assassin but it since wouldn't feel accurate I'd probably want an extra character(s) for it

I think there's a lot to be learned from ESO's class system. Your actual "class" or "build" is made up of several components. The 3 subclasses of your main class, the weapons you wield, your armour, your race, your allegiance with specific guilds.
So you can have two different players both select the "dragonknight" class, and end up not having a single common ability between their builds at the end of the day.
I think Riot's MMO could do something similar. Where you first demonstrated the massive differences in martial classes between regions, my first thought was that you could have some basic "fighter" tree that is shared across the board no matter what. With a few abilities like "charge" etc. And then every class would *also* get a region specific tree for their class. As well as being able to choose a subclass that could be related to their region as well.
So in total your class would be made up of 3 parts.
    1. Archetype - across all regions.
    2. Class - region specific
    3. Subclass - potentially region specific, including some overlap.
Then, like ESO, you could unlock and equipt different skills and passives to create your "build".
And from that point, you could probably just pull your archetypes from League's own class system with marksmen, fighters, mages, tanks, enchanters, etc.

I think it could be really cool if you break down each 'class' into what makes it the way it is, and possibly work on a subclass system. For example, if you chose two base classes and combined them, you would end up with some of the classes mentioned here. Someone who chose two of the same class, such as double assassin could well become a shadow assassin from ionia, a warrior who then chose a mage could become an ionian bladedancer, a mage who chose warlock/demonology as a second class could become a hemomancer, while a double warlock could become a void prophet, etc etc. Theres a lot to iron out as to how different areas could affect this, but it could be a cool idea to allow more options while still keeping a unique identity, without being crazily impossible to make all 50 or so different classes individually.

I kind of hope they simply don't do specific classes. I'd much prefer a more open approach to character creation, by basing each character on the archetypes from LoL - or something.
Tanks, bruisers, support, ranged and melee dps would be perfect to define the base classes. Then choose magic or physical damage - ideally there would be a lot of characters that are hybrids, too. Then further refine it by choosing a regional specialization and a weapon specialization. Boom! Now you have your character!
So, a character would be a magic tank from Ionia who fights unarmed and BANG! You have a mini-Udyr! Original version, not whatever garbage they've done to him recently.
Physical bruiser from Mt. Hyjal with spear and shield and you have a Mantheon type character.

Why do you even think it will have classes? Maybe it's "your class is defined by your gear", or maybe there are only a few archetypes that have 30 abilities, but you can only choose 8 abilities at a time, or maybe it's the same as GW2. There's no reason to discuss classes when we know absolutely nothing about the actual game. There's are so many different mmorpgs with so many different kinds of customisation and progression... We have no idea which direction they will go. I pray it's going to have class and combat of Tera or Lost Ark, but it might have some awful tab-targeting system with 20 year old class design that has limited options because of "lore".

Darkin and Ascended might be an end game playable thing, where you join one of the factions and fight each other in some sort of battleground. Could be a temporary thing, where the time mages transport the players back in time to take part in the huge battle between the Shrimans and the Darkin army. Personally, I think it would be best if the battleground location for that would be dynamic though, so players aren't just playing the same thing over and over.

Or what kind of close range fighting style/weapon you used as a “Scrapper”.

My MMO experience is around 5 hours of WoW (2 of which was downloading and installing it), so I'm not entirely sure how classes work. But here's how I hope they will.
You can't pick your classes. Insead you're given a *massive* skill tree which *grows* when you complete certain quests. The skills you pick from said skill tree change your class dynamically and *locks* certain skills that would be incompatible with your class. So for example you could see a player that has "Frostguard Swordmaster" next to their name who wouldn't be able to learn sand magic but can still learn some arcane spells.
And another example, if you've gone too deep the "Demacian Knight" route, all magic skills are locked but you gain access to more advanced/epic tehcniques as well as heavily increased magic resistance.

This sounds like a really cool idea for a single player RPG but not so much for an MMO.
As they are going for the Holy Trinity and will have dungeons / raids in the game it just doesn't work. You could make a very fun, creative build but if it doesn't have the DPS/HPS/or Threat/Mitigation then you are putting a performance tax on everyone you group up with.
By which I mean everyone else needs to perform to accommodate for having lower dps / hps / mitigation in the group.
You can get around this by either:
      1. Homogenizing all the options such that you end up around the same power level. This would kill a lot of the neat flavor and customizability while being a balance nightmare.
      2. Making the content so trivial that any build is able to do it. This just makes the game boring and faceroll for everyone.
Creativity and Customization in MMOs is less "Pick the tools you want to bring to the fight" and more "Here are the tools for your class. Find creative ways to use them to defeat encounters"

I always disliked how class systems in MMOs feel extremely limited regardless of how vast or varied they might be around the world with all the different cultures, weaponry, schools of magic and power sources. Although, it does seem inevitable given how these games are designed make it hard to give true freedom when creating characters. However, I do think there's probably a neat solution for maximum choice and immersion. Here's what I can come up with:
-Weapons have their own attacks and is separate from any magic stuff. Riot can add as much and as varied as they want (Flintlock pistols, hextech pistols, regular swords, magic swords, knives, chakrams, spears, etc.)
-Magic and some skills are, rather than being a permanent choice on a character and we suspend our disbelief that one school of magic encompasses any nuances of other cultures/religions/power sources, we instead get separate skill trees for different disciplines or schools of magic (Specific Ionian nature magic, Piltover artificing, Zaun engineering, Zaun bio enhancements, Yordle engineering, Ionian fighting styles, Targonian Fighting style, various god-based powers, etc.) (This gets rid of shit like a player playing a Night Elf Priest having to delude themselves into believing that their character is using Elune's moon magic rather than the obvious Light magic the skills all clearly show)
-Players can choose to specialize on only one power source or maybe a mix of a few (while only being able to master one) to perfectly tailor their character to what they want. Kinda like what Archeage did but with more flavor from the lore
-This gives Riot the easier task of just creating new disciplines/schools of magic/skill trees and NEVER get into the issue of classes going outdated or having to do a lot of mental gymnastics to justify why a guy from Zaun and Piltover use the same skills and tech styles or why a player character modeling themselves after Leona has to use a Lux/Lucian/Brand modeled class to get some of that character fantasy.
-Players could get these skill trees from various characters and cultures around the world. Maybe even some special trees like Wuju from Yi or some void based stuff from Kai'sa or something like that. Weapons could also factor in this way like Kassadin's void blade thingy, Lucian's and Senna's light guns (in the same style of, definitely not getting lore weapons)
-The world of Runeterra (and almost every MMO) has a LOT of different ways of fighting or using magic, and the further we can diversify these traits, the more immersive the world will be for players. Guild Wars 2 kinda does this with their Elite Specializations and weapon skills, but I think there is another step to take for maximum immersion and player freedom.

    My ideas for the Races:
It would be awesome to have some kind of questline, where you could ascend or become a darkin later on in the game.
The issue with helmets and or boots can be overcome by either disabling the visuals for certain races or make special gear for them.
I personally would love it, if there would be some kind of monster-like character to be played in the mmo. With the shurima expansion they could introduce the fusion race of people who merged with the void. Instead of leveling only your class you may evolve your race with some cool extra gimmicks.
    My ideas for the Classes:
Imagine Riot's MMO has no typical classes. Instead of playing out classes like in normal MMO's, in Runeterra you get to choose a Path to follow. The Path determines which kind of skills you can learn and which Path specialized quest you can get, but you won't skill into your path normally. You will learn skills and abilities through your actions. Wanting to be a paladin? Work in demacia and follow the Aspect of Justice. Learn different Swordstyles? Go to each country and learn from the locals. You don't determine who you are only through your classname and your level, but through the path you walked to become who you wanted to be.
Given that you could technically learn everything in the World of Runeterra with this system, you could limit the access to the skills by your Path or by a restricion to the number of skills that can be used at a time.
One big pro of this method would be, that you can implement any kind of ability and identity that is possible in the game, but the con is that it would be harder to balance, since min-maxing is a lot easier with this method.

Darkin would be late game character, which you can only obtain through either an darkin item (probably the highest rarity) or through ascending and then corrupting, which would be also lategame (probably level 80-90 out of 100).
At that point of the game most void monsters (and maybe playable characters) would've probably gone through 4 or 5 adaptations to the world and thus be extremly powerful.
And even other races could at that point become aspects or ascend, master a World Rune or make a pact with a celestial being and thus gain the ability to hold on against a darkin.
Of course it would be hard to balance to give the special experience, but i don't think it is impossible to make

Such godlike entities just doesn't make for a good comprehensive story. Unless you severely nerf them, which threw away the whole point of darkin being unstoppable. With all that you can use all the different orders of the factions(light sentinels, lunari, god warriors, different ionians schools etc). I don’t know how hard is that to be done, but will be nice like that.

It feels like most optimal way to create their classes would be something similar to Grim Dawn's build system. You choose a primary class and you get an option to add additional spells/perks from other class. In Riot case you could choose a primary class like "mage" and within it decide your primary and secondary subclass - for example "Arcane mage + Spirit mage".
Or they could just copy ESO class system where classes actually can be built into anything you want. Mainly it depends on what weapon/staff you wield and what armour you wear. Of course some classes are better then others in specific roles but in ESO you can be a pretty good healer on "typical assassin class".

I feel like instead of factions they could have backgrounds. Having your character be from Noxus or Ionia or Shurima, but you aren't bound to a specific faction that divides the playerbase. And you can still start playing the game in any starting area, even if you're not from there.
Plus, they could even make the backgrounds cause class restrictions. If you want to be a Pirate, you've got to be from Bilgewater; witches from Noxus; Mystic or Ninja from Ionia; Shamans from Freljord; Inventors from Piltover and Zaun.
And for the more generic classes like Warrior or Sharpshooter, they could have a specialization system where your background affects what you can become. Paladins with sword and shield would only be able to be from Demacia or Targon; Berzerkers from Noxus or Freljord; Blademasters from Ionia. Archers from Freljord, Snipers from Piltover, dual-wield pistols from Bilgewater. Heck, there could even be a class for fighting on a mount (like Rell, Sejuani, Nunu, and Kled).
But then they could have a way to "sign up" for a region to fight on behalf of and to call your home, even if it's a different region than your background.
And of course there's the races. Humans are everywhere of course, but others are more restrictive. Dragons are from Demacia. Ascended are from Shurima. Aspects are from Targon. Yordles are from Ionia, Bilgewater, and Bandle City. Specific Vastya are only in certain places. Predatory ones like Rengar being from Ixtal, water based ones like Nami being from Bilgewater, more human-looking ones like Sett and Ahri being from Ionia, etc. Heck, they could even let people play as demons (like Evelyn and Elise) or even Ruined spirits or people (like Kalista or Yorick) from the Shadow Isles.

At the start, only use a certain number of Champs, like 10-20. Release a new class along with a new champ to train under for each expansion.
This would lock certain classes into their corresponding lore region as well as limit which race they pick depending on the races that exist in the region(region based, not faction based).
After you follow the champion to learn your abilities, you either get separated from them or leave them after the starting zone. Then you can explore runetera with whatever class you want to play as while having champion pride based on league of legends. Which is what will make this game really take off. what could be good about classes in the new riot mmo, is that we could have like "basic" classes at the beginning, and then the more we get into the game the more our classes can evolve letting us a choice on where we want to go: like, u start as a simple warrior, u start with an axe, or a huge sword or a katana etc etc depending on wich skills or maybe wich regions or maybe something else, ur class will elvolve into a new class, like if u start as a warrior that is based on fast attack and that u elvolve into the region of the Ionians, u could evolve into a blademaster! the other thing about this, is that (i'm not sure if its a good idea but u know) maybe we could also have legendary classes, a class that is very hard to get, but can be real worth like being a vuju blademaster or else.

I think some of the class options you’d dismissed as too powerful could be prestige or advanced classes. Things you switch to later on in the game. This could also be a really good balance between classes being origin exclusive or not. You can start as a generic warrior anywhere but your advanced class depends on your origin.
Although personally I’d prefer it if any class was available from anywhere, but to keep the story intact and to incentivize you to actually stick to the normal combos, there could be some lengthy or difficult quest I’d you were learning skills from outside your origin, and there could be specific enemy factions who can’t.
So a blade master or warrior from Ionia can automatically become a wuju blade master at higher levels, someone from a neutral region would have to earn the trust of the Wuju experts through some tough quest, and Noxius warriors could be the only ones who can’t even get the quest to unlock Wuju.
