Ruined Pantheon is character assassination at its finest. A dude who literally reignited celestial weapons and walked off a stab wound from a Darkin Blade with nothing but his own fucking willpower, was mind controlled by an emo undead toxic goth bf. He's literally the most mentally unbreakable being on Runeterra, Riot.
If most of the sentinel champions didn't make sense, why would we expect the ruined champions to make sense?
They could as well make a ruined Aurelion Sol at this point for all I care.
I think this is the reason he is not ruined Atreus(as in his mind control was special because he wasnt controlled ) , like the other champions who were controlled, he was ruined Pantheon(the aspect of war) because somehow Viego revived it. And the prestige edition was Atreus gaining controll of his body back, a pity was the fact that we were not shown Atreus geting control in the main story.
Well, they ruined fucking Karma as well. The literal spirit of Ionia was ruined by a malnutritioned emo boy.
@@Ghostonm but it was interesting for karma. we finally saw a different version of karma and during invasion that forced her to use her powers for war instead of being pure pacifist who could stopped many noxian invasion.

Also… Kalista… she got another story doing the exact same thing, again. She was the literal cause of Isolde getting poisoned because she deflected the dagger. She played no part in the entirety of it and could’ve had some sort of story arc. But again they kept her in the shadows with Yorick.
There were so many Champions that could have benefited greatly from being involved and they only really used the bare minimum, with the rest being skin'd Champs. Maokai, Yorick, Kalista, Hecarim, Karthus, any world leader, KINDRED....we only really got Lucian and Senna (and the new champs literally made for the event).
I don't mind the skins being canon or their involvement in the event, but I think the story overall would have benefited greatly from downplaying their involvement to be more local to their region--they defend their region and then that's where we leave them, to clean up. Instead involve other characters, or don't and use that time to focus more on the core conflict with Lucy, Senna, Gwen, Viego and even Akshan. At least that way we'd get a more focused narrative.

Wouldn't have liked Kalista tbh. She has a Story with her Husband Ledros where they describe that she lost her sense of self. Her whole identity now is being the ghost of vengeance. And her universe story reflects that really good. Her spirit is broken and she's just another pawn for whomever controls the black mist now. Right now i only know about Viego, Hecarim, Karthus and Thresh who retained their sense of self. Yorick too of course but he's not a mistcreature.
@@tamikuru7936 and who controls the mist? its viego. Hecarim and kalista and the rest should have been with viego. Also Kalista seeing Isolda might have led to her getting her sense of self back as isolda was the catalyst for everything that went wrong in her life.
Kalista was literally the main character of the entire first ruination arc, and they completely deleted her from the story in the comic. Her and Ledros could have easily showed up in this story. Ledros is one of the main players in ending the ruination and one of the very few wraiths other than Viego and Thresh who haven't lost themself to the black mist (thanks to his love for kalista). If the sentinels met him, he would've helped them. Imagine If Hecarim showed up to fight the sentinels, Ledros could save them by fighting Hecarim. We could also see a lucky encounter between Kalista, Hecarim and Ledros where they'd fight and kill Hecarim, which would greatly help the sentinels. In LoR we even see a picture of a solari sentinel doing something to Ledros but it's never explained.
"Graves with no TF" - FINALLY someone mentions that! I still haven't forgiven you, Necrit, for saying that you hoped TF died in the Ruination, but I was very much hoping for him to be ruined, giving Graves a real incentive to become a sentinel. When he didn't show up or even get mentioned at all, I was absolutely furious
TF saw the future with cartomancy and Destiny Gated out so he wouldn't be involved in this dumpster fire of an event. It's why he gave Graves the card if he wanted out too.
Probably TF was appearing in Ruined king game and maybe he teleported himself somewhere else, we also don't know what Gankplank, Illaoi, Yasuo, Braum, and Ahri did. Also why MF got ruined? What she did in the game? We will never know
(Fun fact: Pyke skin says it got controled by the power of Nagakabouros, but we don't have Illaoi helping with that) Could that have happened in the ruined king game?
I personally consider his Underworld skin canom and not a "What if?" situation. He would have given his blue card to Graves before falling or something. 😌

A 40 min video dedicated to talking about how bad the RotS event was? Nothing has made me happier as a Yorick main.
Not utilizing Yorick in that event was probably the thing I hated most. So disappointing.
My headcanon is that yorick being pissed at riot pickep up every single powerful artifact and power that he can, ascended mount targon beat the shit out of thresh, and ascended the game realm to punch the devs at riot in the face
Ideed, yorick is one of the least played champions of the game, they didnt care that he is a mayor character in the ruinations history, potentialy the only hero of fhe shadow isles, but no, screw that, well just put riven, and some other popular champ that was never ever been related in any way to the shadow isles lore, good job
Imagine having a Sentinel Yorick instead of *UGHH Sentinel Irelia* Riot did us dirty when they just made our hardest counter a bigger part of the story that was meant to be ours...
Imagine being validated as a Yorick main. It would almost defeat the purpose.

I'm going to have to disagree that hype was evaporating and that Riot simply "couldn't" delay it any further. It's just as Skyen said. If there is any company that could afford to take extraordinary measures in extraordinary circumstances it is Riot games with one of the most played games in history. Instead we got an event that left the lore in shambles.

The ruination was a huge spit in my face. I've been waiting for a event like that since they introduced the harrowing lore that dropped years ago. I honestly almost cried because it felt like soulless corporate marketing.

I found the event highly underwhelming. I didn't pay too much attention to it but when I was looking at the in-game cut scenes after completing missions it felt like an alternative universe like Spirit Blossom, except I found Spirit Blossom endearing. This didn't seem at all like the culmination of years of lore in the main universe.
Yeah, it felt like a soggy story.
Characters are here because we need one champion of every part of runeterra, some become just goofy comic reliefs (with the worst being Rengar becoming a literal kitty more than a ferocious panther as he is in lore), no one learns from this story, not the ones who joined the sentinels nor the ones corrupted by viego (whose all characterisation is “I shouldn’t get hypnotised by one of the gods of death next time!”), many champions/characters like Galio, Yorick or Ledros don’t appear, or for like 2 seconds, so we can give the maiden to Viego, and obviously the Ixtal part where, actually, the only problem are ghouls, and not the fact it’s literally the Amazon jungle but with purple bugs bigger than you, that could eat you whole. Okay ixtal isn’t a big part of runeterra story, but you can’t make it a filler episode where what you do is see the baddie’s right arm, he tells you to get that isolde’s part (the frick it got there, I still have no reasons why), and he tells you the way to beat the baddie
Actually spirit blossom was cannon. They made all the spirits look like champions but they said that the spirits themselves were canon. So they exist as a parts of the world, the only difference is that they look different on the story.

The spirit blossom was a way to show off both yone and Lillia, but the event itself was a fun dating sim with no repercussions on what happens in lore.
On the other hand, ruination puts you in the place of a person that both exist and doesn’t exist, thanks to how the story is told differently depending on what medium you use. And it’s a major plot of the lore, a bit like in ww2 one guy who did a lot doesn’t exist if you take the written documents, but exist in the filmed documents taken.

You can disagree, but if a lot of people have a problem with something and these are the people who buy the most skins, then it is an actual problem. You can disagree about whether you like the ruination, but objectively was... low effort, to say the least. I expect more from a company that makes billions, and if people have a problem with them, it is their right to complain.
It is not your job to badmouth people when they have actual complaints. Just like it is not their place to badmouth you if the company actually listens to the feedback and changes the next event.

Way to be belligerent. Also, with this much backlash, I doubt the company will do nothing. So how exactly do you plan to "not let us." You have no power to do anything here other than complain online. But thousand who played that crappy event have beaten you to it. So Riot either listens, or I honestly think we might have to protest the next event if it is this bad. Either way, you can't do anything about it.

The point of "giving Isolde to Viego VS fighting Viego" could have been a good plot. Lucian would likely want to fight Viego, since he woudn't want to see Senna die again. Senna, on the other hand, would likely try to sacrifice herself in order to save the world. It would be cool to see the sentinels dividing themselves, maybe we could see some infighting or something, but no, all wasted, like everything else in the event.
I mean they kinda took any competence away from Lucian so that wouldn't work as he would just let people do what they want :/ how they wrote it at least

For all it's faults the Ruination did have a positive outcome... it gave creators a cow of content to milk for as long as possible XD.

To summarize, the Ruination Event was like one of those group works at school, where each person does a part and then combine everyone's parts at the end. Maybe at Rito they had people working separately on each part of the event and then they just released it at the same time, not caring too much about the parts making sense or not. XD Then it came out, the parts were inconsistent, but they were like "Oh well, it's already out now..."
I would rather not have "Rookie" in the event and have the story progress just like when we are watching a movie or reading a comic. Just with the canon champions, and no outsiders (aka Rookie).
But how are they going to appeal to asians and weaboos without shoehorning in a generic self-insert VN protagonist?

The thing that hurts most for me is the way they treated the end of viego's storyline. The moment could've been SO powerful if they wrote him actually listening to Isolde and seeing that what he did was in the end in vain, that the love of his life didn't want this. He then realizes what he did and that it didn't matter. He's now broken, with a distant, melancholic gaze, not even reacting to Isolde being "absolved" in front of his eyes. Visibly broken, he simply accepts his fate of being sealed, showing at least SOME character development for him.
Yeah but that would mean letting the writing team write anything that actually advances anything meaningfully in any way. And they didn’t have a ‘sad Viego’ skin ready so it can’t happen.
Technically he can't feel that way because he's the first wraith. He is the absolute embodiment of the black mist. Of all the feelings of a toxic love, he cannot feel any other way because he is dead and he cannot grow anymore.

If anything I think they'll have to make a spirit caller or some other witch champion who will summon him from camavor and bind him to her. It would be an interesting dynamic. From prince to king to undead ruler to minion.
I think its ok that Viego never grew as a person, further adding to his tragedy that his biggest problem is quite simply his own character. A very common and valid way to write a villain is as someone who doesn't grow, but the main characters do and thus are able to take down the villain.
They had this sort of setup with Lucian and Viego, showing that Lucian could have easily had the same possessive toxic love for Senna as Viego does for Isolde, but instead Lucian learns to be supportive; even if it means potentially losing Senna, Lucian accepts she is a person who can make her own choices. Viego has a hard time accepting that Isolde made the choice to stay dead, hence why the Shadow Isles exist and the Ruination happens. He can't accept it even after the final confrontation.
Of course they only really set this up properly in the comic version, so who knows how much of that was intentional. My point might be kinda moot.

Eh, with the sheer amount of world-ending threats Riot's shoehorned into the lore the past few years, they'll have plenty of chances to get it right someday.
By the time the Void rolls around everyone in Runeterra is gonna be so tired of world ending threats.

Aurelion Sol rolling into Runeterra can end the world. I never understood why they used that tag line. It's as if they aren't aware of how expansive their own lore is.
I also noticed they compared Lucian's old motives and emotions to Viego's a bunch, like how Graves mentions he's a spitting image of him. But that never really went anywhere? I was half expecting for Lucian to let Viego revive his wife to see the truth for himself or something. Or at least have some sort of sorrow for a man who lost his way over romance

Honestly, the objectivity and extremely funny editing (especially the beginning) made this video amazing. This really is your magnum opus like you thought it would be.
I love how you can tell how much love and attention this video has. Like this is screaming "RIOT, YOU REALLY FUCKED UP," if necrit along with a bunch of other lore content creaters join together to make a video.
I still do not see how Necrit can defend the Sentinel Points. If you did not play ARAM or a champion that was great for missions you could end up needing 25 games per region in ranked. In the final region I was getting 96 points from a ranked win and 46 from ranked loss. I did not escape the first region until week 3. Only 1/4th through video. The points were a MASSIVE problem.

@@katansnipe8121 The was my presumption because it was the only game mode that you could get alot of points and play the champions that weren't basically point vampires, any low kill split pusher with one damage profile. Something about that point really irks me because even Riot admitted people were not even close. 600 points per win is basically saying "we are in week 3 and a majority of people are still in Demacia."
lol i only played normals and finished in 3 days i mostly played with premades that were higher rank than me and could carry so ig thats why

in the ruination teaser where they first introduced viego (when he attacked lucian and senna) we saw samira and darius. at first i thought darius would get a ruined skin and samira would get the sentinal skin. but here we are
This is a fantastic format! The banter was so fun, and I just love the live action sprite! If you ever do this again, I am all for it!
This was a chance to open league lore to a next level. We could’ve gotten viewpoints of different champions during a world ending event, or even showing the aftermath of the event. They claim it’s a retelling of the main story but which story? There was never a main one in the first place. I get covid screwed everyone over but to go and throw continuity out the window over these amazing characters and design just to make your money is very unfortunate. They made their money and it doesn’t matter :/

First of all, the event in my opinion was a disaster. As a huge lore fan I didn't even read the novel in the client and just skipped through everything. The story made almost 0 sense and the presentaion was lackluster. I had so much hype for a lich king like story where everyone needs to fight togheter to stop him. And on top of it the world situation could actualy make the event better because I understand it is hard to portay the whole runeterra fighting without having an MMO like game but what riot could do and this would give them time to release Vex and the ruined king game was every month they could have an event about different region fighting the mist. In this case, people would have the feeling that something really massive and important is happening ( for all the people who consider lore at least a little) and for all the rest they could get some rewards connected to the region every month so people would grind the game even more which riot wants. Overall, I do not agree with the covid excuse at all.
They could do series of events, similer to Bilgewater brawl.
Where they expand on the story for the next couple of months while slowly unraveling a bigger picture.
This way, they would have time to represent majority of the League of Legends characters, even those that dont tie to the story normally but now has to deal with it (such as Sylas, OR RENGAR).
But instead, they got lazy and ruined it with a over-night project of an event called ''dating sim 2''

Damn, this was just an great Necrit wideo but the additional youtubers just being there made it such great work, i mean even Falconshield made the music can my "playing the game since 2009 ass get happier". A collaboration truly greater than the ruination, at least when you compare the amount of workforce and budget. Thank you

something that makes all this even worse, EVEN WORSE, is that arcane was amazing as well as the tie ins, However the ruination left such a bad taste a lot of people, myself one of them avoided it like the plague thinking they were gonna fuck it up and go the way of blizzard, i wish arcane came first.
Really liked the video, the concept and execution was amazing. I am sure it was a lot of work and props to everyone who participated, and would really like to see something like this again in the future.

Atreus has been reviving the constellation of war for a while now. Viego reviving the Aspect of War was actually an interesting twist, because Atreus being ruined wouldn't have made sense for his character, plus it would have been a retread of his lore, being possessed.
Ruined Pantheon falls short however, because Atreus remains defeated because Ascended Pantheon isn't canon, thus he never triumphs over the Aspect playing into his strengths as a character, always getting up when defeated.
I like the way this video was being presented. The concept of dividing the vid into parts which has the intro, good and bad side (TB Skyen), the criticism part and deeper dive into the lore (all of them) and the song (Falconshield)...dang what a collab
This event was so horrible that I wish the Ruination and everything related to it was completely non-canon.
I... skipped this event. The grind was real, the confusion was unbelievable, and I kinda felt cheated with my time.
Even completely missed the free thresh skin cause I just couldn't be bothered with how flat the event felt.
When it came to Spirit blossom, I didn't even like the event & feel as a whole all that much, but at least I was able to play it for all the free stuff in it.
I just wish we got the Ruined King game on time. Would've at least explained why MF was ruined & Pyke of ALL people became Sentinel.
And where the rest of the ruin king game cast was, whats dis yasuo, brum, ilaoi and ahri just not exist anymore why did they not help.
I personally got into the event like the last 3 weeks, played 10 games to get all the tokens, and totally dismissed the thresh skin because I hated it, like many people, because you’re transforming the already few monsters champs into shirtless anime boys. And no the “change” in his skin isn’t worth still.
I first didn’t really care about the story, and after I finished the event, I started watching some regions, Ixtal being “haha Rengar big kitty, his biggest “prey” is ghouls and not big purple bug, Ixtal is just a filler so Thresh can have Isolde’s soul, somehow, in a temple no one knew it existed before” and half the stories felt like fillers with no real repercussions or just ditched lore.
Diana whole story is “I shouldn’t give up!”, all the corrupted champs’ character arcs are “oh well, I shouldn’t get hypnotised by one of gods of death next time!”.

The only redeeming quality of this event, to me, was the Graves skin. And that's only because it's a really good skin and I love Graves, not because it actually improved the story at all :/
I love that skin but the lack of reload animation is... well, strange since I got used to timing with the reload sound.

The reason why people love sentinel Graves is because... well, it's actually Graves. It's one of the few characters that didn't get MURDERED, SLAUGHTERED, DEMOLISHED by the ruination, so sentinel graves was basically a VGU with his real current characterization and updated voicelines.

And what I meant is that neither them or the Voidborns created on Runeterra have actual identity within the story overall, they're used as narrative tools to move other plots forward.
It ain't surprising they feel underrated since they lack identity and character, and thus far seems intentional.

I really, REALLY wish Riot would literally offer you a job. You are a genuinely wholesome person with the best intention and very good ideas! You have excellent attention to detail and actually care about the game and the lore. I appreciate this video because even though you're acknowledging what didn't work, you actually made suggestions on how it could have been better.
im pretty sure riot already has got many brilliant people working on the lore.. i think the bigger problem is that good lore doesnt make money as fast as appealing champs and skins, so their word probably doesnt have the weight in the company that it should have.. but maybe, hopfully riot learned from the huge negative feedback..
@@DarthIHE Not saying Necrit should *write* the lore as much as he should be some sort of a Director honestly. And yes, skins do sell, but we've seen that skins that come with some sort of lore or story that's more of an experience for players sell much better. They have the market, they need to listen to that market and Necrit has such a good way of interpreting what people want and could genuinely be a huge asset.

it would have been incredibly cool if viego actually won on purpose and resurrected Isolde, and then the ending of the event would have been reminiscing on how petty their war with viego was as his soul and mind heal with time on the last few pages of the story. Would have subverted expectations in a great way by letting the villain win, and maybe the way Senna, Lucian come to the conclusion that resurrecting Isolde is their only play is by slowing getting to know Viego through every interaction they have in each region of runeterra, like maybe in the first region (Demacia and Freljord) hes a typical villain but each time after that Senna and Lucian get a glimpse of how desperate and noble viegos motive is for starting the ruination in the first place and we actually get a real villain when the plot twist is that Thresh was working behind the curtain. Now that would have been a great way to end the story as it is, Viego being stuck in his homeland and only getting rejected by Isolde before she came back to life is fine, just not that compelling.

I always thought it was weird that neither Lux or Leona were involved. I mean Lux whole thing is the Light. And Leona is the Sun so also the Light. The fact that neither of the two Light Champions being Sentinel's of Light just didn't make any sense to me. I think it could have been really interesting to have Sentinel Leona and Sentinel Diana.

One thing i really noticed with this event, was the power creep in the lore really making it bad for me. Like… Azir, the other Ascended, and the Darkin, alongside with the whole Targon region, didnt do anything, even though they should be far more powerful than some emo. Targon even has goddamn fking AURELION SOL under their control.

Yeah, I checked out on League entirely for a while after the inexplicable reviving of Pantheon, I'm glad that checking up on things proves I made the right choice.

they don't do that, the kinkou doesn't really meddle with war, the Navori brotherhood with Irelia and Zed's shadow clan does that. The weird thing about that part is Irelia should've been with resistance fighters guarding the shores or the Lasting Altar for Karma so she can focus communing with the spirits, but she was all alone hiding in the bushes jumping the sentinels. We should've even gotten Zed somewhere in there, because his whole thing is succumbing to the shadows to save Ionia, why didn't he save Ionia this time.
Have you ever thought about how it was unnecessary to even include the corruption of Ionia(the land), because of Karma (being the spirit of Ionia) when she could have handed the fetter to Viego so the entire region wouldn't succumb to the mist. How and why was she even holding onto the fetter while she knew it was the ONLY thing Viego was after, it was never explained why Karma was holding onto it in the first place and it lead to her downfall- it was unsatisfying. Exploring Darha's identity crisis and personal struggles was the best part for her inclusion within the event alongside with Irelia's connection to her, but the execution of her corruption and the sentinels leaving her succumbing to the mist was at most- unnecessary even though it sets up a good premise for Irelia to become a sentinel wanting to save Karma and restore their land.

I was excited because LoL for me didn't have a centralized story. But when I heard about the ruination and how it would help tie certain things together I was all for it! I wasn't expecting perfection but I was expecting something decent.
Sadly it was the same thing that got me to not play league anymore and not enjoy the lore or the game. At the time WoW was getting some backlash for its own story and it showed they didn't care then soon after the lawsuit happened. So I went from one game to another, only to be out again due to how the story was written and how it disappointed me. It was like "fuck again?" Granted I understand that there was some things like the pandemic and everything going on. But considering the choices that were made, the way the visual novel told the story, how they basically fucked up alot of characters and excluded some and then to add insult to injury, riot says "its how you interpret it" im sorry that misses the point and if riot has to put something out like that, the writing his trash. Just like how on WoW we are gonna have to wait for a book that details why a certain character did what she did.
If a game company has to put out a statement "interpret how you wish." or some other supplement material outside the game to explain its context (WoW and the books they have to explain the beginning of each expansion plus the chronicle books that were marketed as Canon only to be retroactively told that its from another perspective.) Then the story has failed majorly

@@kriskitt I don't blame the writers. I blame the executives that threw out the competent script because they wanted funny characters because "kids like jokes like that". The writers at riot are amazing and make amazing lore. They have been for a while now. The executives saw that people liked the lore and tried to be hands on and tell them how to write a good story for the big important event and ended up ruining it all.
The "interpret how you wish" is the worst kind of cop-out to do in this situation.

YES EXACTLY! Thank you for making this video Necrit, it was exactly my reading of the ruination event and I am so glad you made it. I feel bad for always being put down because I enjoy the lore and sided with Viego for what they gave us but the evidence or rather the points are there in what Riot gave us.
If they would have actually realized that what people have always wanted was a good story and good plot points, then it would have never been so money driven in the first place. Even within Spirit Blossom, the reason why the graphic novel was fun was because it was an interpretation of different characters acting within the lore of runeterra. They were the characters that we knew and love living as the embodiment of mythical characters within Runeterra. It wasn’t all just “sexy Thresh and Kindred skin”.
