The song itself (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") was originally written in 1913 by Dick Burnett and recorded by Emry Arthur in 1928. It regained popularity after being featured in the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou? staring George Clooney.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Home Free - they are creative geniuses and their concerts are even better! Adam "freak of nature" Rupp - is one of the founders and he is a very talented beat-boxer and sound effects guy. Look up the videos of his "drum" solos at from concerts. It won't be top of audio quality but you will be able to see what he is capable of.
Oh, they did a FANTASTIC job on this song! I agree with your assessment of this group's talent. And I always, always love how you get into the music. There is no one better! Here's to your next one! 🙏🙂❤️
This is wonderful isn’t it?! Home Free is so good. They’re ‘a cappella’ so no instruments, just their mouths. Chance was doing the jaw harp, mouth harp sound. He says it hurts his throat to do it too long so in concert he’ll use a looper. The beatboxer Adam, is amazing. He can do drums, cymbals, harmonica, all manner of noises. All the boys can do some form of beatboxing. Tim, the bass, has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and sing high as well. They have great harmonies. Try How Great Thou Art, End of the Road, Country Roads, Seven Bridges Road. They do a lot of covers but also write and sing their own songs too. You won’t be disappointed with Home Free! Loved your reaction.
There are Vids of the Beat Box guy doing drum solos on stage. He makes the opening sound, the juice harp, drums and closes they way he opened the song.
You should listen to Tim Foust "will you still love me tomorrow/ stay" He is the bass here. He can sing in 5 octaves. You will love it and be totally amazed
Seen them in person. They are freaking awesome! I can't wait until they come this way again! What you see on screen is absolutely true. They use no instruments at all.
Adam Rupp (the beatboxer) made the harmonica sounds (with no harmonica). Adam Chance made the "jaw-harp" sounds, again, without an instrument. If you enjoyed the yodel in Austin's voice, you should check out their cover of "All About That Bass".
The song itself is 108 years old - first published by Dick Burnett, a partially blind Kentucky fiddler. The song was originally titled "the Farewell Song" in a Burnett songbook dated to roughly 1913. Instruments are performed by the 2 Adams - Adam Rupp (beatboxer, Drums, Woodblock, Harmonica etc.,) & Adam Chance (Jew's Harp).
I loved your reaction to this, thank you! I agree with you on the rap vibe from Rob towards the end and reacted the same way the first time I heard it. Chance was the one making the sound at the end, it wasn't mechanical.
@@MrsPenPal It definitely wasn't mechanical and he wasn't throat singing either. He was imitating a jaw harp, an instrument widely used in the deep south and parts of Texas.

A jews harp. Some places it’s called a mouth harp or jaw harp. Basically a curved metal instrument that has a small metal tab you ‘twang’ through your teeth while pressing the whole instrument against your lips.
