  • How to remove a fence post with a car jack, this is definitely not OSHA approved, and it's sort of sketchy, but it gets the job done. Of course, this was the worst pole we have ever pulled, but that is what happens when you are filming. Hope this helps you, if you have a stuck pole and don't own equipment to pull it out. You will need a car jack, a heavy-duty chain, a heavy-duty bolt to go through the pole. cinderblocks and wood, and a drill to put a hole through the post. We had to keep building this one up. You could start with it taller on the sides and adjust the chain as you need. but we broke the long chain, and this was by far the most we've have had to pull a post up, that is what happens when you film somthing.

Very smart idea. You have quite a project going on there. Glad OSHA told the day off so be kinda safe. 😎. Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎.

Thank you! Last week out of the blue my son called, asked me what I was doing, which I've been slowly adding a fence using these spike post holders which bevel down about 3 feet, but once you put them in it's almost impossible to pull out. Anyway he said he'd have my 11 year old grandson come over to help which really freaked me out so I did it myself quickly, BUT, I put in the wrong way! It needs to go in so I can reach he hex screws on each side and I put in where the hex screws are in front and back... Completely freaked out I must have looked like a nut stomping my foot!
I then calmed down, there's always those on RUclips that have gone through similar things and I found your video... so thank you!
The only thing is I recommend that you both wear safety glasses and your hubby NOT be so close, or have his hand anywhere near that chain... You could instead use some wire to wrap it onto the top... because if that chain snaps it's going to fly and could hit someone...

Yikes, keep your face away from the chain in case it snaps. She had the right idea warning about it.

Great vid, along with all the griddle vids! Thank you both, much appreciated. Another idea is to not mess with the bolt. I can't describe it, but when you wrap a log chain around the post correctly, by wrapping it around the post twice, it will grab it. Then when you run out of stroke/jack, lower the chain and get another grab. I've never done it with a car jack like that, but hundreds of times with a Hi-Lift jack/bumper jack/widow-maker jack. Plus you don't have to cut the post, drill a hole, and buy a bolt. If you ever buy a Hi-Lift jack, buy 2 cans of spray on graphite, don't use wd-40(attracts dirt). Just FYI from a farmer. :) Take care and thank you again for the vids! AL

I never thought of wrapping it a good idea. However, if it is rotted at that bottom like some of ours were you don't always have enough space to wrap a chain. around it. We cut off this one but some of our others were rotted at the base, this makes it a little easier for those. :)

Thanks for watching Make sure the bolt and chain are heavy enough, good luck! It's worked for us, hope it does for you. that monster was in the ground 36 inches with concrete.

I have used an engine hoist, floor jack, and a bumper jack before. If a skid steer wasn't available for me to use the bumper jack would be my next go to.

If you have those things, great! LOL but if you don't this works.

While this appears to have worked well enough coming from someone who works in the ER please don't have you face anywhere near that chain. You are putting a lot of stress on it and if one of those links decides to give in the wrong way you could be ending up with a high velocity pieces of metal shrapnel.

Great idea. But I wonder if this method can be used for rotten post which is usually the main reason why we need to take it out.

if you can get it into a hard enough area to pull yes it works if it is so rotten that you can't do that you may have problems.

If i lived near ya, with my engine hoist it would have taken ten minutes !

Glad you commented this!! I was thinking of using an engine hoist to remove 2 posts but I thought the car jack might be a better idea. I think I'll try the engine hoist. I removed one yesterday only with a concrete jack-hammer type thing (not sure what it's actually called. it's more handheld than a jackhammer) and digging. Not the most ideal way to do it by a long shot, so I wasn't looking forward to removing the other 2 if that's how I'd be doin it.
