Last week we returned to India as vanlife in the UK simply came to a stand still as our camper van conversion is still without a working engine. Our mission was to rescue our tuk tuk or autorickshaw named "Pete" from where we left him in Goa #Goa #vanlife #Indiatravel
But unfortunately Pete was in real bad state. Next we have to make big decisions about how we move forward for the rest of our travel in India 2023

We came to India last year and bought a 20 year old rickshaw in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
In the name of my Grandfather, we are challenging ourselves to drive this rickshaw from the south of India, all the way to the North of India
we made it through the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Goa...so far

We have been travelling and doing van life UK in a Luton conversion (old removals van) for the last 3 years full time. But we dont have the best of luck with vehicles, and the rest is history.

As solar panel users and people who have experience with battery banks, would you consider replacing the engine with an E-axle. Most poor people learn from seeing. If the local drivers see you in a converted taxi, they would be more likely to make the charge. No more mixing oil.
The oil should go in before the petrol I belive? They need to be mixed.

Don’t forget to always have a bunch of bananas for the elephants on the roads . We have been to Arambol beach , Raman owned it , he was a chef and we had a nice meal.

Hi Liam and janine why do I luv this channel , I hope one day the BBC ring you two up to do your own travel programme it would be lovely to have an up to date loving couple do that 😁 On another note I have a machanic friend who he and his dad fits engines to those vans you have that’s broken down and a lot lot lot cheaper than those who have been ripping you off in the UK. If your interested in their number just buzz me 😁 and good luck I’m hooked now going through your old stufff I’ve missed , it’s better than watching the TV n it’s real life from a lovely loving couple . Hi guys ! Glad to see Pete up and running again. As a long-time enthusiast for 2-stroke engines, can I offer a little advice that may minimise the possibility of problems with Pete's engine : I noticed you mixed oil with the petrol in the ration of 50 ml of oil to 1 litre of petrol. This makes it, in 2-stroke terms,
a " 20 : 1 petroil mix ". In a hot country like India AND hauling quite a load for a small engine, the oil has to be the best - you need to use " Fully Synthetic 2-stroke oil for PREMIX " - or, at least " Semi-synthetic".
When filling the tank, calculate how much petrol you will put in the tank and put the correct amount of oil in FIRST. The petrol will then mix with the oil much more thoroughly than putting the oil in last.
Spark plugs on a 2-stroke are subject to twice as many ignition cycles as a 4-stroke engine so they are prone to problems. This problem is exacerbated by the presence of oil in the mix. Over time, burnt oil builds up on the electrodes of the plug - this is called " whiskering " and is much more prevalent when using non-synthetic oils. Take the plug out and clean it once a week - get a plug spanner, feeler gauges, a soft wire brush and some abrasive paper so you remove all the deposits, clean the electrodes and check the plug gap. Slide the appropriate feeler gauge into the gap and if necessary close it up with a gentle tap or open it with pliers. Be careful though, as the little arm of the electrode can break off.
Carry a spare plug and I reckon you should change it every 1000 miles.
Clean the air filter weekly too - a must in dusty conditions. Wash it out it it's sponge or foam and knock dust out of it's paper. Again, replace regularly in dusty conditions.
Carburettor jets can get blocked in dusty conditions, especially the main jet. Take the carb apart and make sure nothing is blocked and the float is sitting correctly.

Oh so horrible. I have seen same case many times in Goa. You shouldn't have left there. May be gave it to some hosteliers who can use it for other travelers for time period for in city travel. That would have atleast kept it running or gave it away and get a better Mahindra Bolero truck. But hope it be fine and the bad phase is over and now its all good start of new travel life :-

I'm going to be 80 in a month and half. I can say everyone so right about how time flies 17:51 by. I traveled 82 to 98% of my time from 38 to 58. I've seen much of the world and enjoyed it. Now that I'm not able to travel, I don't miss it and am happy watching travelers. So go for it. I met many wonderful people and many of them are still friends and stop to see me when they come to the US. You will never regret your travels. Take a deep breath, it's going to be ok. Be blessed in all you do.

Tip for Janine - to avoid getting too shaken up, don't sit on the sides of the seat. Sit in the centre of the back seat and you will feel the bumps less.

Seeing you two back in India takes me back 55 years to my youth. Love your dress and earrings, I bought a similar pair for my wife many moons ago. That's the plan!
The 2 stroke petrol/oil mixture isn't exactly critical, but yes it needs to be roughly correct. Too much oil and it will smoke, too little oil and not enough lubrication and it might break the engine. It's good to learn how to change a spark plug with 2 strokes, always screw spark plugs in by hand. Once they're hand tight, tighten only a little with a socket till it pinches, never over tighten a spark plug, it could snap off in the cylinder head. But as long as you remember not to over tighten or cross thread it, it's really easy.
As someone who has owned 2 strokes, repaired them and tuned them since the mid 80s I would like to add that the correct ratio of oil to fuel is very important, too little and you risk heat seizing the piston, too high and you can have the same issues as the fuel mix will be weak, the oil quality is also important, especially in a hot climate, remember the higher you go the fuel mix will need altering. Can I also add that no mechanic will work on your van whilst a legal case is pending, I would not be happy to repair someone else's work.
So happy you've gone back to.india, absolutely loved the last adventures.. Sunday just wasn't the same

Good to see you back in India, so there is a few advice for the future.
1. Buy a COVER for pete. One that can be secured with ropes or hooks.
2. The snake you saw was a tree snake. They are non poisonous, so basically just a house lizard without legs. They eat insects.
3. That "large" insect was a freaking Grasshopper/Cricket. Pretty sure you must have seen it before.
