- In this video I´m presenting the steps I take with new locomotives before putting them in service on the layout. The goal is maximum performance and minimize potential problems. This includes not only tuning of the configuration, but also installation of a €2 Power Pack, as well as a number of other prepararations.

Really nice locomotive.I loved the official hand-off of duties to the new loco, while the elder one goes out to begin life as a stud. Or so I presume is the case for retired iron horses.
This Power Pack is often referred to as a keep alive circuit and I think this would be a good keyword to include as well. Thanks for the tips!

Nice tutorial. I use similar home made power packs in my coaches to stop flickering. There are smaller and smaller capacitors on the market now, even surface mounted ones if you are really struggling for space. Your new loco looks amazing. Thankyou for sharing this.

GREAT vid..the price of the Esu made up battery caps are quite expensive , good alternative made up by you Martin..all the Viessmann and some high end Roco models now come standard with the battery backup..

Hi Martin, This is a super video ! Most enjoyable. Love the loco although I'm not a DB fan and most of my steam loco's are Hornby DCC sound and some Roco's as well. Regarding pub: I use 'Slimjet' as a browser + Ad Blocker. No pub at all. You just need a bit of patience here on YT for they give an 'error code' but after about 10 sec the video's play without interruption. Thanks for uploading ! Greetings, Filip
Thanks for the tips on the buffer capacitors , after experimenting 2200 mf is probably the minimum for me personally to make it worth the effort. Currently searching for the smaller appropriate capacitors.

Nice video about the Br 44 and great layout, although it isn't a typical German landscape.😁 I have the Oil fired 39880 and I will install a powerpack as well. May I mention that it looks like the coal cover on the tender hasn't quite snapped into place.
Have a look at my G gauge garden railway in Australia. Just key up Yea Valley Garden railway, and enjoy the ride with a camera strapped to flat car & propelled around the entire set up.

I've recently watched a video of BigCliveDotCom about some piezoelectric atomisers. The effect of thin vapour clouds looked extremely fitting for the steam locos exhaust. I wonder if something like that could be adapted for these model trains.
SMD capacitors would allow a bigger total, or take less space. But soldering 30 or 50 of them together is a real pain.
But this locomotive is a proof that 3rd rail system has some real disadvantages. A 2 rails version of this Decapod will never need a power pack, not with 9 collecting axles.
Thats not true, that a 3 rail system is not good as a 2 rail. In my childhood I had a marklin and some friend a Fleischmann and the 3 rail contacts, even in this analogue, times where superior!! My friend was some kind of envious about the Märklin 3 rail system!!

Hi, I love your videos and this one certainly gave me inspiration to install a powerpack in my locomotives as well, but I have a question, does any of the specifications of the condensators or resistor like voltage or anything need to be different if you run a 2 rail DC system?And do I also need to solder them to different pins on the decoder?

This is Märklin item 7226. The generator housing do not get hot at all. Just insert and you are ready to go

It should work with all manufacturers. In effect the Capacitor just acts like a battery with a very quick release of power when the main power is cut off for dirt on the track or so on, keeping the wheels turning just long enough to get over the break in voltage. God bless from uk.
@@KennethNicholson1972 Hi Kenny, i think that the capacitor just acts like a capacitor. A battery gets the current from a chemical reaction, and that's not was happening inside a capacitor.

Hi Martin, fantastic video! I noticed in some of your other videos that you have a Marklin BR 50-2362. I'm curious if you also have installed a powerpack into this locomotive. I've been trying for several days now without any success. I have found a diagram online that says this locomotive uses pin 5 for negative and pin 13 for positive, but when I connect the powerpack to these pins, nothing seems to happen. If you had any insight into how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Martin and all the others, I have a question: Is there any difference if I solder the powerpack to the decoder or somewhere else inside the loko? Second: What's wrong of the lights of the loko blink some times and then the CS3 closes the connection (programming track)?

The quality and the structure of your videos are very professional - seldom I have a point to add - but now...
The acceleration of the 44 is still to fast... I use different slaves on that steam locomotives that allow the use of a wheel sensor, don´t know if it´s possible with yours ? One steam push at the half of the wheel turn. It´s a 3 cyl engine, I think... if the difference of steam push is to narrow (because of the tiny wheels) you can control it by software.
The sound in the begining of the start sequence is much more powerfull and impressive. I use loksound 4 or 5 from ESU, but perhaps it´s possible with the marklin slave too.

Please, are the capacitors, diode and resistor the same for any locomotives? Is there a mathematical formula for using and concluding which values are ideal?
Same for all? YES
Formula? Different motors have different power consumption, so the theoretical formula varies from one locomotive to another.
Hi, thank you for another useful video. On the diagram 9:11 a 100Ohm and 0,25 Watt resistor is shown. But looking online I have found 100Ohm and 1 Watt. During the explenation you have mentioned only 100Ohm but nothink about Watt. How important is the number of Watt? can be 1W or must be 0,25W? best regards
Hi! The charging of the capasitor is complete after a few milliseconds. The maximum current during first microsecond will be 160mA (2.56W), but it is theoretical since time is soo short. In this application the small size of the resistor need higher priority, so please use 1/8 or 1/4W resistor.

Here is an example but for keramik capacitors n-modellbahn.de/v90-br-290-von-roco-digitalumbau/ "Die Zehnerdiode D2 dient als Überspannungsschutz für die Kondensatoren, da sie “nur” 16V vertragen" . But i do not know if this will work with Al capacitors and what kind of diode exactly should be used. What is your opinion? Thank you
The worst part is the locomotives that need a power pack are the ones that are too small to have one. I have an e3/3 and its a pain especially in the yard

I tried adding a power pack /keep alive to my brand new 37119 (DB BR 18.1) but the two pins you indicated do not have 16volt between them. Did Märklin change something?
Does the lights on the locomotive work, then you DO have 16V on those pins. Otherwise there would be no lights.. No, no recent changes..

My 2 vintage BR50's and BR44 no longer run reliable. Purchased them new in Germany back in 1985. They use a pancake type motor located in the tender. These motors weren't that reliable back then let alone now. Spent countless hours trying to keep them going but they are now retired to the German Locomotive engine shed. I have always wondered something and you touched upon it in your video. If I understand correctly if I purchased a new Marklin by swapping out the decoder can it run in the US on a Digitrax system?
Digitrax and marklin decoders are different... digitrax follows DCC protocols.... marklin send info in a different protocol.... now i been out the hobby for sometime... so things may have changed...
But i also found a way around this issue by using a "intellibox" central command station.... this allow running of marklin and digitrax decoders on one system...

Hi! As long as the decoders confirm to the 21-pole NEM660 or NMRA standard, they should be possible to just swapping. But! There are differences in some cases, so please check with manual before swapping.

How does the smoke generator work? How does it heat up to vaporise the smoke oil? Thanks
Typically smoke units are wired up to the pickups for power, and burn a sort of mineral oil for the effect.
A electrically conducrive wire is wound around a steel pipe which has one end in smoke fluid. When power is applied, the steel pipe is heated turning the fluid to very hot and vaporised pushing it by quick expansion out as ”steamer smoke”

I don´t understand why Märklin cannot do this too by add power pack in the digital locomotives? Märklin locomotives do sometimes interrupt somewhere on the track due to the oxidation.

Hello, why do you use 25v condenser and not 16v?
Because digital system current rectified to DC is about 21VDC (AC times square root of two) = A 16V capasitor will explode after some time in use.

Thats a thought I have a long time: These capacitors, why the makers of toy/model trains do not use them since decades? There is so often a little bump or contact loss in your rails, yes even if you make the nicest layout, such things can happen...Or if you just built some rails on a carpet (Yes I know I am a bungler, I know. Thx). On gauge 1 it seems you have this capacitors since decades for 5-10 seconds going on. But HO there are none and capacitators are no new invention in 2020, so why these are no standard to a locomotive since decades ??
Okay who am I? I am a bungler, with the old analogue on the carpet, and give throttle when there is a switch on the rails system, like a tram car did in old times...
