  • Universal Hovercraft is proud to offer the UH-19XRW Hoverwing™ ground-effect vehicle for industrial, commercial and military sales. It is available to our customers on a ready to run turnkey basis. The Hoverwing™, designed as a high performance hovercraft, is unique because of the ability to add wings for flight in ground-effect.
Flying in ground-effect enables you to clear obstacles and fly over rough water at speeds in excess of 75 mph. Cruise altitude is 2 to 6 feet and the craft can jump up to 20 feet to clear large obstacles. Operating in ground-effect does not require a pilots license, and the craft is registered as a boat which brings a wide range of new opportunities to the commercial and tourism industry.
Removing the wings from the Hoverwing™ takes just 10 minutes. With the wings removed the Hoverwing™ converts into Sport mode, a sleek high performance hovercraft, able to carry 4 to 6 passengers into areas that cant be reached with any other vehicle. The Hoverwing™ can be configured in many different ways to accommodate your passengers or equipment needs.
Notice: the 19XRW Hoverwing™ is not yet available for recreational use. Commercial, industrial, rescue, and military inquires only.

This looks like a very practical and efficient cross between hovercraft and a gev !

We often drag the wing tips in the water to tighten the turning radius. The wing tips are shaped like a ski and will not dig into the water no matter how hard you try. its actually a challenge trying to make a wing touch the water due to the lift increasing as the wing gets closer to the surface.

We fly nose up to bring the speed down. This is useful when landing on rough water - or if you just want to have fun. The craft is much more efficient flying level. Top speed airborne on this particular model is 80 mph.

    Clever idea!
The hovercraft part eliminates water drag at liftoff, that had necessitated 8 massive jet engines on the Ekranoplan.

Looks like in a turn or other cause of a wing dip, a brush with ground or water would be devastating. Aircraft encountering ground effect float quite a bit higher then this even with high wings. I truly think you need to go higher for safety. The concept of a hover to full aircraft would surely be interesting as runways would be available anywheres.

It is a big wing which provides lots of lift at low speeds, but higher drag at high speeds. It's not meant to fly like an airplane. When it lifts beyond its max height, it loses cushion underneath, and drag increases, so it settles back down into its cushion mode.

Difficult to "tip" wing in water due to lift being created. Its all in the design.

I see a lot of Russians angry thinking this is a ekranoplan. First ekranoplan was a big failure because it needed many engines to take off. Many engines usually means a lot of fuel consumption so it defeats the purpose.
Second the the ekranoplan was strictly for landing on water. This hovercraft use only 80hp engine for trust and 15 for lift. Total 95hp. It can land and take off from land or water.
The wings can be store on board to use as hovercraft and transportation.

@tazmun I've seen a video where the driver (/pilot?) actually dips the wingdip on purpose while turning, without any problems. Keep in mind: while turning, the vehicle is drifting outwards, so the wing tip won't dive in, but is more like skiing on the surface. grtzz

No I'm not a moron but this video is about the ground effect I was merely questioning why the plane that flew with its belly supposedly just off the pentagon lawn didn't also feel the effect which would have been far more of an effect considering the size of the aircraft its speed and the forces created by its wings.
My comment was very much to do with the topic of the video, your comment had no reason for being here other than to make people think there's something wrong with my comment!!!!!!!!

I know what is going on:
There is pressure between the ground and the vehicle, and that pressure forms a "bubble" it move upward constantly until the pressure is to low hold the craft any higher. Then it floats back down closer to the ground repeating this effect

Totally cool - Back in the 1970's my family lived on Clark's Island in Plymouth, MA & my dad could have used this hovercraft to get to the mainland in short time. The bay is shallow with rocky areas & this would have simplified low tide commutes plus cut the commute time way down. For foggy days (there were many) maybe a hovercraft could be upgraded with instrument flight rated hardware.

Well done job!. 'Flying in ground-effect enables you flying in rough water' Great, but how rough? There are numbers ranging from 0 to 10 to classify how rough water is. -The name is Douglas' scale. How high can this vehicle fly? Can it fly just a little bit over surface, or as high as a conventional plane?

@viper8red no a craft like that can also go higher than the wingspan, because its not only ground effect working, but it gets very instable and dangerous and u want it to be driven without pilot license.

  • @Skywardbound172
    @Skywardbound172 14 лет назад

actually ground effect is a reduction in upwash, down wash, and large scale vortex rotation around the "wing". the "bubble" of air is a myth it doesn't exist. ground effect machines can fly because of the reduced DRAG created by the grounds disruption of airflow near the craft. what is talked about is a common misconception of how lift works...the actual pressure differential above and below a wing is in the order of less than 5 psi, and is not the primary reason a wing flys
