As a person in my 70's I've grown up with the likes of all these extremely cool killing machines. I remember many years ago on the TV show called The Wide World of Sports. And one episode was about the F-15 Streak Eagle. It was like "what would the Air Force do if it wanted to go drag racing?". My four year older brother was on the USS American in the Gulf of Tonkin and he was a mechanic on A5 Vigilantes. Watched as all these were brought online. Planes like the F/B111, F-14, the BONE, F-18, F-16 and of course the awesome F-15. Looking back it was a very exciting time for the technology and to inspire our future combatants.

The reasons for the EX are mostly training and logistics: It takes a minimum of two years to transfer from an F-15/F-16 to an F-35. It takes 3 months to transfer to the new EX. Logistics wise, it is 90% equivalent to the previous airframes and so a minimal impact to the logistics train is necessary.
It costs about the same as an F-35 to purchase, but its operating costs are 1/3 - 1/4 that of the F-35.

That is 100% true, but we did not know that at the time. The capabilities of the MiG-25 were vastly overestimated, so we developed the F-15 as an answer to what we thought the Foxbat _could_ do. Basically, we made a super fighter to combat a super fighter that didn't exist. The Foxbat could hit Mach 2.83, which was amazing fast for the time.

Even in Vietnam, something like 90% of missions of supersonic jets never actually went supersonic, and I think no mission went over Mach 1.5 even for a few minutes. Instead of this, they should have made an F-35XL, with the big wings of the naval F-35C, 2x the internal weapons bays, and a lot more fuel.

@3:11 was based off the North American A-5 Vigilante program, not F-15. It was the inspiration/starting point for the Soviet MiG-25 -- a little historical tidbit most don't know. Although not a direct copy, you can clear see the resemblance; especially, when considering the preproduction model that originally had dual vertical rudders. However, when looking at another North American concept, the NA-237 from the WS-300a competition, one could argue that it represented both the blueprint for the MiG-25, as well as the F-15. A jet that was clearly way ahead of its time, designed in less than 10 years after WWll!

The 3:11 design actually drew inspiration from the North American A-5 Vigilante program, not the F-15. It served as the foundation for the Soviet MiG-25 - an interesting historical fact that many overlook. While not an exact replica, the similarities are striking, particularly when examining the preproduction model that initially featured dual vertical rudders. Additionally, if you consider North American’s NA-237 concept from the WS-300a competition, it could be seen as a blueprint for both the MiG-25 and the F-15. This aircraft was undeniably ahead of its time, having been developed within a decade of the end of WWII.

    • @lqr824
      @lqr824 Месяц назад

It was a great fighter, then, but not the best now. A pair of F-35's, flying enough sorties, could destroy literally every F-14, F-15, F-16, and F/A-18 ever made without ever being locked. F-15 had great speed which is utterly useless. Even in Vietnam War, when so many fighters were supersonic, less than 10% of missions even went up to Mach 1. I think Mach 1.2 was the fastest EVER recorded on a mission, despite the F-4 being a Mach 2.2+ aircraft. What we need instead is an F-35D with the naval wing (50% greater area), second crew seat, double fuel and double internal bays. Even the F-35 probably will never fly an actual mission at its maximum speed.

One Saturday morning in 1975 or 76, I was taxiing out for takeoff on STL's Runway 12 Right when the ground controller told all airplanes to stop and that the airport would be closed for a 10 minute aerial demonstration. I told my 15 passengers why we could not take off and invited them to deplane and watch the show. Me, my copilot and our passengers stood on the taxiway in anticipation. I looked across the field to the McDonnell plant and there were several thousand employees standing there facing Runway 24. A moment later, an F-15 taxied out and took off climbing vertically while accelerating, something the F-4 could never do and something never done before in a production jet fighter. The pilot put on an airshow displaying the awesome performance of the F-15 and almost entirely within the boundaries of the the STL airport. This included a 90 degree bank circle of the airport.

102 kills, 0 losses for the F15 in its lifetime up to this moment. The new f15EX is closer to a Generation 5 aircraft than a Gen 4 aircraft. Its upgrades make it as formidable than just about anything in the skies to date, and its weapons load is staggering. When flying in conjunction with an F35, it becomes a missile truck, with the F35 out ahead of the F15, identifying targets and with the upgrades to the F15, instantly transfers target information to the F15EX, greatly enhancing its staggering abilities.

Doesn't matter how modern and capable a fighter jet is, if it's too expensive and has reduced numbers is like not having them. The F22 is the most capable fighter in history today, but has a reduced number, the NGAD seems to be produced in an even smaller number. If you think that there's two ways to win, one is having the utmost advanced jet fighter, or having something that's still very good, easy to produce, maintain and having it produced in enormous number. That's the approach China is taking, at least seems.

In a 1960s annual report, McDonnell Douglas discussed the design goals of the F-15. Having a perceived Korean aerial combat F-86 : MiG-15 win ratio of 10:1 but a nearly failing 2:1 win ratio over MiG fighters in Vietnam and the TFX/ F-111 do-all, journeyman of many, master of none plane program, the Air Force wanted a fighter second to none that would re-establish air superiority. So a fighter-bomber role was not to be paramount. Analyses showed most air combat engagements were near the upper boundaries of subsonic flight and the emphasis was placed on enhancing/ maximizing that area of its flight envelope.
Note: Much later reviews of the Korean engagements have lead some to reduce that 10:1 kill ratio to a 2:1.

The US found out the true nature of the foxbat when a Russian pilot flew one to Japan and sought asylum there. After examining the Foxbat, the US found out that like most Russian offerings, it didn't begin to live up to the hype. The F15 beat every record set by the Foxbat years earlier. Due to the extreme weight of the Foxbat due to its use of nickel as opposed to titanium and aluminum, its weight required an enormous amount of fuel, greatly reducing its weapons load, and its range.

Nothing great about F 15 EX fighter Russians had the formidable Mig 25 Foxbat interceptor later on the Mig 31 Foxhound. Don't forget get few years back Soviet pilot defected to Japan in a Mig 25 and lateron the Western scientist's were amazed to see the performance of the aircraft.

The F-22 and F-35 while incorporating stealth and advanced battle management software, do not possess the speed, range or weapons load out capabilities of the F-15EX. IMHO a well trained US or Israeli F-15EX Jockey will Splash the Chinese J-20 and anything in the Russian Inventory. I say, maintain a substantial inventory of F-15EX'S while developing the NGAD Fighter with similar speed, range and weapons load-out capacity. Combine the F-15EX'S capabilities with Stealth and the the US will dominate the air for the next 25 years. I also think the NAVY made a mistake replacing the F-14 TOMCAT with the F-18 Hornet/Super Hornet. They should have went with Northrup Grumman's proposal for the Super TOMCAT building on an incredibly capable aircraft with superior speed, combat radius, and weapons load out.

  • @chriscarter8255

Why want they work on a stealthy eagle, with the same speed as the eagles but house its weapons eternally, I know they had worked on or made a prototype but it's never went into cereal production. They need to produce those cause those would kill the F22's for one reason there a hell of a lot faster, with better radar and a bigger weapon capacity
