Even if it wasn't for the drugs, I think he would have had to leave eventually. He's simply too much of a singer-songwriter to be the "3rd guitarist" in someone else's band.

Too true. I think his sobriety is still such a personal journey. But I do think he’s trying to work out Amanda’s contribution to it in song. I doubt that Amanda would have put up with his shit. She’s a strong person and he was knocked to his knees by her. I’d venture that he’s still figuring out what the hell happened. How could so many mistakes have led to his good fortune? What luck, and what strength from both of them.
