dude, i loved jay’s character. he was always interesting to watch. like he was a dick, but he wasn’t boring (which is more than a lot of characters can say). also, smh poor toby he deserved better
He had more charisma than most of the main characters. I think that’s why he’s so well liked, when paired with his redemption/maturing, despite having one if the worst rap sheets in Degrassi history.
The plot in season 2 when Paige was a victim of SA was done well. I was a victim of SA as well but they did a great job with this episode. Also just like Paige I didn’t get justice either.
The only reason I don’t like the Spinner and Emma pairing is because they gave it absolutely *no* development. Had they taken the time over the season to lay down the little foundations of how they make good friends/teammates and maybe some small hints that they could be attracted to one another, it would be a much better storyline. I could even buy the rushed Niagara wedding and beach party thing. It’s the fact that the writers decided to throw them together last minute, so it felt like their feelings and closeness came out of nowhere, that made me dislike them.
Also, a side note, back in season 1, I really wanted Terri and Spinner to become a thing. From their interactions it always seemed like Spinner had a soft spot for Terri. I would have loved to see them together. I was rooting for them when he gave her the words of encouragement during her modeling episode.
yeah for the way they went about it i felt their relationship was built on lust, not love regardless of how many times you had the characters say it. they would of been better off having him get drunk and marry holly j at least they had some connection. he and emma none whatsoever
ur so real for this and ashley really did feel like such a big character at the start of the show the writers clearly lost interest in her later in the series tho they kinda did her dirty for her ending
Season 4 was immaculate with the buildup episodes before the shooting. The aftermath episodes showing how everyone deals with the shooting was really good too. But then… when they brought it the whole Kevin Smith filming a movie at Degrassi plots into the show it ruined it for me 😭😭
its not that they stopped its just that the degrassi writers completely replaced Sean with Spinner, Craig, and Marco. It happened out of NOWHERE. Marco showed up ONCE and Craig was hanging out with Sean but suddenly they did the Drive episode where Craig hung out with Sean, Spinner, and Marco and then after that there was like no more Craig and Sean?? Degrassi def had an issue with that in the early seasons, that and all the characters being parts of clubs for 1 episode then that club is never seen again, its kinda funny
I think it was because Craig was cool with Jimmy & Sean wasn’t that down to be around because he didn’t like Jimmy. Then the shooting spilt up a lot of people.
like all friends you find different interest in high school and go your own path, but it is sad they couldn't make some story lines for them to hang out
The amount of nostalgia I got from watching this made me cry and bawl my eyes out. This show was my childhood, I grew up with these characters. But after season 8, it just went downhill for me, I still watched but once the originals left like spinner, Emma, and manny etc etc I just gave up, until next class, but next class was nowhere near the original, not even by a long shot. Such a great vid, thanks for this.
I grew up watching Degrassi as a kid and this was one of my favorite shows. It shows kids going thru real life situations. I didn't like how they did Terri character, Hazel should have gotten more of a story line and I didn't like the "love triangle" between Graig, Ashley and Manny,, etc. I do like even though they recycle some of the story lines they are all different. Ex. Manny getting an abortion, Liberty giving her and JT baby up for adoption, Mia being a single mom in high school and Jenna being pregnant, having her baby and showing the difficulties of parenting to putting her baby up for adoption.
I'm sorry but I will never EVER feel bad for the way rick was treated. He was an abusive asshole who put their friend and one of the most genuinely sweet characters of the show in a coma. He should have never been allowed back into that school. He should have been in Juvy. I barely see how he was treated as bullying because he deserved worse. If he felt that bad about what he did, he would have owned everything he had done and even if they decided not to put him in juvy, respected what seeing him everyday would feel like to her friends. He should never have gone back into that school. Also, bullying doesn't cause school shootings. We know this for a fact because lgbt kids, kids of color and kids with disabilities are the most bullied kids in western cultures but they aren't the ones shooting up schools. He didn't deserve them to treat him nicely. I am forgiving of Toby because he was lonely and he experienced his own bullying (never shot up a school though.... go figure) but I say forgiving because he was still in the wrong. JT was correct, Rick's violent history wasn't a secret and should not be alright with someone who put an innocent person in a coma for no reason other than a fragile ego. And what were the adults thinking letting him go there? In what world was that a good idea knowing his history? I don't blame Spinner for any of it, other than the lie that got Jimmy targeted, that was wrong. The "bullying" was him getting off easy. It was a school shooting that could have been avoided so easily if people showed a bit of a common sense and worried less about the "young man's" future being ruined over "one mistake" even though he almost killed a girl. He should have NEVER been allowed back to Degrassi.
exactly, he shouldve gone to a different school for a fresh start. it was the adults fault for allowing him back when they know how the kids will react to him being there.
Although I also don’t feel bad for Rick, I think it did bring up a good point about not fueling the fire. Rick may have deserved it, but the shooting might’ve not happened if people would’ve just left him alone or tried to deal with it in a better way. I appreciated how Jimmy wasn’t friends with Rick and didn’t make excuses for him, but he also didn’t fuel the fire and realized that it would just lead to something worse. Unfortunately he got the consequences of everyone else’s actions when he handled the situation well.
Came onto youtube because netflix is really laggin rn and low and behold-this popped up first so I was like hell yeah, perfect thing to watch! Now no one disturb me for the next hour, I'm watching Tht Guy!
The Like Mike reference in this video about Degrassi is just...too much nostalgia for me. Can't wait to watch this. I will always love Degrassi. Yes, there was some questionable writing, but this will be the nostalgic comfort show I'll still watch when I'm fifty.
Points I differ on: Season 4 AS A WHOLE was okay. For me, it was really good until just after the shooting, and then the later episodes didn't really match up for me, but who can follow up after such a great storyline? Season 3 for me is top top (even if slightly less mature) because all the episodes from start to finish are good. Season 10 does a good job of resetting Degrassi after they lost their footing from seasons 7-9. It felt like they were continuing the show 'just because' until that point, but they breathed fresh life into it. Side note: If Tristan weren't gay, he and Ashley would deserve each other. They're terrible. And Esme is annoying af.
Actually Degrassi originally was an after school specials that’s what the show was introduced as back in the 70s it definitely never stopped feeling like an after school special 😂
OMG 34:18 thank you for pointing out the fish eye view. I rewatched this episode literally the day and thought it seemed unique and unusual for degrassi
It’s weird, but my favorite seasons are the 40 episode ones. I just love all the drama that happens in them. There’s a lot of annoying stuff in them, but they definitely aren’t boring (Also, EClair for life)
I really enjoy your commentary on the Degrassi series. I started watching when season 10 was on air (as a third grader lol). This is the only show that I can rewatch in its entirety starting from season 1 all the way to season 4 of Next Class. But in more recent years, I usually start with season 10 simply because it's the most nostalgic for me. I will watch this show still pretending to be shocked when things happen because there are so many iconic scenes and storylines.
I will remember season 5 as the "I can hold a grudge for a really long time" season. I mean isn't it human nature for hard feelings to subside over time? Snake admits to Spike that he kissed another woman, and Spike can't forgive Snake for like forever. Along the same lines, there's Liberty with J.T., Marco with his father, Manny with her father and Peter, and Jimmy is still ready to brawl with a remorseful Spinner over the accident. In the spin-the-wheel to see who gets the next episode's life-lesson storyline, the wheel stops at Emma and anorexia. Forget that for 4 and 1/2 seasons, Emma hasn't given us a hint that she has body image issues. All of a sudden, she thinks she's fat and develops an eating disorder, all neatly packaged in a 2-part episode. Then again, after Emma inconceivably hooked up with Jay in season 4, I guess anything is possible. This season seemed to drag on as I kept questioning why the characters would act that way. For example, am I supposed to believe that taskmaster Liberty would ignore her pregnancy until the very end? And that she's moving out of the house at age 15 with no plan to pay for living expenses. Wait, J.T.'s got an idea. He'll just steal drugs and sell them on the street to make first and last month's rent. That sounds like a sustainable plan. Who is writing this stuff? On the plus side, Darcy and Alex breathe some fresh air into season 5, thank goodness.
This is the best recap I’ve seen by far!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 But can we talk about the season 4 soundtrack? No other season compares… I see you went with the extremely pc version.. include the tough themes and make it about 2 hours longer..
I remember I watched the next class when it came out on Netflix a long time ago I just recently watched the next generation over the summer and it’s truly one of the best shows I’ve ever watched
I feel like Degrassi is both ridiculous and silly, while actually representing some of the serious storylines well. The aftermath of the shooting, Cam's death, Mile's father, and Becky being ostracized were all handled so well. But so many storylines are just over the top with just the most out of pocket dialogue. It's why it stays one of my favorite shows.

When this first came back on I started watching from the beginning on noggin along with south of nowhere and radio free Roscoe. Omg you HAD to be there…..
Ashley as the main character is the vibe I originally got too! When the show first aired, I started watching because my older sister by 1.5 years was watching it. She was a freshman at the time, and I was in 7th grade. I remember thinking it was all about Ashley’s life and the rest were a supporting cast.
I think what really hurt the later seasons was the size of the cast. I think because there were so many characters the writers didn’t have enough time or the desire to explore most of their stories. I think the smaller cast of the earlier seasons let a lot of the main characters be more fleshed and developed than the later ones OR the writers got lazy
10:44 worth nothing, Alex Steele (younger sister of Cassi Steele, who played Manny) portrayed Craig’s little sister Angela in the show. So, sorts an in-joke there. Alex played Tori as well in much-much later seasons

i never understood that when i found out, i was like wait why didn't they just have that be craigs sister, wouldn't change the story lines
Man, I wish this video was longer. I could listen to you talk about Degrassi for hours.
“Craig and Ashley are dating”
*SLAP*
“Oof… not anymore”
“Terri being a pushover will be her downfall” OOF that hurt lol
“Who tf gets fired like that?” Lmao I actually got fired like that when I was a teenager🤣😭
dude, i loved jay’s character. he was always interesting to watch. like he was a dick, but he wasn’t boring (which is more than a lot of characters can say). also, smh poor toby he deserved better
I loved the scene where he shot down Holly J., though. That was classic! He might not have had a girlfriend but he knew how to dodge a bullet!
He had more charisma than most of the main characters. I think that’s why he’s so well liked, when paired with his redemption/maturing, despite having one if the worst rap sheets in Degrassi history.
Rick Murray was an AMAZING actor. He deserved his flowers
Facts!! Most underrated actor on the show imo because everyone hates him.
he got em at his funeral
he got em at his funeral
@@THTGUY Ephraim Ellis, and Mike Lobel, who plays Jay, are the two best actors on the show.
The Kenan & Kel theme that played in the background @8:49 caught me off guard...BUT IN THE BEST WAY!
The plot in season 2 when Paige was a victim of SA was done well. I was a victim of SA as well but they did a great job with this episode. Also just like Paige I didn’t get justice either.
they didn't do it but i was waiting for some point for us to find out dean was killed by someone else who was a victim
The character development Jay went through while dating Manny is why so many bitches are out here thinking they can change the bad boys lol
Facts
Never liked how the minority characters never got enough storylines they were all like tokens
Facts
The use of kendrick at the beginning is so funny given recent events 💀
Yeah, if it had been given room to develop, we could have gotten a nice friends to lovers arc.
ur so real for this and ashley really did feel like such a big character at the start of the show the writers clearly lost interest in her later in the series tho they kinda did her dirty for her ending
her best was when she was in her goth stage
dude i hate craig but when he sees jimmy dead in the hallway… chills. that was perfectly acted. it shows so much humanity it’s crazy
THIS is how you review a series 👏🏾👏🏾 clear, entertaining and concise! Thank you 😊
Season 4 was immaculate with the buildup episodes before the shooting. The aftermath episodes showing how everyone deals with the shooting was really good too. But then… when they brought it the whole Kevin Smith filming a movie at Degrassi plots into the show it ruined it for me 😭😭
I always forget why Sean and Craig stopped being best bros
its not that they stopped its just that the degrassi writers completely replaced Sean with Spinner, Craig, and Marco.
Yeah they just wrote it out but there’s an episode in S4 where Craig is spiraling and ends up at Sean’s house since he lived alone
like all friends you find different interest in high school and go your own path, but it is sad they couldn't make some story lines for them to hang out
WHY DONT I REMEMBER TOBY SAYING “maybe if you drop the bitch act” BECAUSE THATS ICONIC
THANK YOU I STOPPED LIKING ELLIE AFTER SEASON 5 they ruined her she became the ultimate pick me girl
exactly like since when was ellie the type of person to hate a girl for dating a boy she likes and act so pathetic over a boy
i think ellie and ash best moment is when they were friends and had a goth thing going for them
Glad we agree that Sean/Ellie were an underrated relationship! I really liked them together
should of been end game
Terry should of gotten more lines she was a great friend and person
Yes and Andrea Lewis who played Hazel. They nerfed alot of actors and actresses on this show
I'm sorry but I will never EVER feel bad for the way rick was treated.
In the real world this makes a whole lot of sense lol. But unfortunately it’s tv, and degrassi wouldn’t be where it was without this episode
THANK U!!!!
The fact you used the Kenan and Kel theme in the background though part of this video makes my millennial heart so happy
The editing in this is incredible. Awesome summary of a pretty great show.
The Like Mike reference in this video about Degrassi is just...too much nostalgia for me. Can't wait to watch this. I will always love Degrassi. Yes, there was some questionable writing, but this will be the nostalgic comfort show I'll still watch when I'm fifty.
Points I differ on:
Season 4 AS A WHOLE was okay.
“godDAMN I don’t like this season” HAD ME DYING 😂 it was the emphasis on damn that had me deaddd af
Actually Degrassi originally was an after school specials that’s what the show was introduced as back in the 70s it definitely never stopped feeling like an after school special 😂
You’re sense of humor is top notch
OMG 34:18 thank you for pointing out the fish eye view. I rewatched this episode literally the day and thought it seemed unique and unusual for degrassi
It’s weird, but my favorite seasons are the 40 episode ones. I just love all the drama that happens in them. There’s a lot of annoying stuff in them, but they definitely aren’t boring
(Also, EClair for life)
Yes, 10-12 were masterpieces
yess season 10-12 are my favourites to rewatch but i kind of hate eclair as a couple, their storylines are entertaining though.
I hate it so much. Don't get me wrong I like seasons 10-12 but every episode being a 2 parter kinda kills the experience for me.
@@MG-mn7ignah .. 1-6💯👌🏾
I am in LOVE with this video!! 👏 thank you, thank you! Time to rewatch it all again 😂
I don't remember anything after season 6 or 7. I probably grew out of the show when the OG next gen actors started to slowly get written out.
But can we talk about the season 4 soundtrack? No other season compares…
I see you went with the extremely pc version.. include the tough themes and make it about 2 hours longer..
Not the "Terri is a pushover....which becomes her downfall" pun 😢😮😂
The breakfast club episode was ICONIC..... I remember that one.
i saw the episode before the movie, when i saw the movie i said this reminds me of that one episode of degrasssi
Okay yall using the word iconic too much that isn’t what it means
Sean and Ellie are ICONIC. as a fellow red head Ellie was my favorite.
I remember I watched the next class when it came out on Netflix a long time ago I just recently watched the next generation over the summer and it’s truly one of the best shows I’ve ever watched
Bro I've watched all of your videos at least five times each in the past three weeks
@@yungefetv6263 I appreciate you
Found this video this morning and spent my shift finishing it good work my dude I'll definitely be subscribing (and liking)
That Whitney Houston Wig on Shay 1/10
Sean getting back with Emma after jay turned her into a eater was wild
I love your degrassi videos so much
hey tht guy, i was wondering if u were gonna do the degrassi junior high and degrassi high series, maybe the summer specials and the schools out movie?! i love ur account man!
15:25 I was actually fired from PartyCity like that. That place is trash.
20:02 Ugh, Ellie is so pretty
Wow! This is a video I didn’t know I needed in my life.
I love these series breakdowns! I mean I have a huge soft spot for seasons 1-8 but I mean I did rewatch seasons 8- next class and I will say I was pretty entertained and I like it
“Damn, Toby. High school’s almost over,”
😂
Listen Degrassi literally had me in a chokehold for years . I stopped watching after a certain point but thank you for this entertaining review . ❤
When this first came back on I started watching from the beginning on noggin along with south of nowhere and radio free Roscoe. Omg you HAD to be there…..
Damn. I loved both of those shows. RFR and SON were awesome.
Me too! Tv was thee shiznet! Like my teenage years were lit!
Degrassi is so underappreciated ,they might recycle some plot even from the 80s version of Degrassi .
Ashley as the main character is the vibe I originally got too!
When the show first aired, I started watching because my older sister by 1.5 years was watching it. She was a freshman at the time, and I was in 7th grade. I remember thinking it was all about Ashley’s life and the rest were a supporting cast.
Terri's kind of a pushover, and this will ultimately be her downfall in the next season. LMAO.
Damn Toby High School is rough
Damn Toby High Schools almost over 😂
Watching all of degrassi in 2020 was a peak in my life
10:44 worth nothing, Alex Steele (younger sister of Cassi Steele, who played Manny) portrayed Craig’s little sister Angela in the show. So, sorts an in-joke there.
Alex played Tori as well in much-much later seasons
42:48 the latter fact is, of course, joked about in this video
Watching the clothing style progression is so cringe. We really use to wear 4 shirts at once, with a skirt over bell bottom jeans. 🙃😅😂
It's funny Craig compared Manny to his little sister considering in real life the actor that plays his sister is Manny's sister
My brain completely blocked out JT dying. That hurt all over again.
I know this is bad but, I can't help but laugh everytime I see Rick slap Terri like that. I think it's just the sound and the fact that I can't take him seriously.
Its ok i have a sick humor too 😂
