Without a doubt I agree with Kevin. Him and Scott jumping, and Bret Hart were all the foundation of what made the Attitude Era happen. The way Bret put over Austin and then boosted DX (Even naming them, albeit inadvertently) all helped the Attitude Era become a thing

Jumping ship ALWAYS improves things for both sides. Look at Y2J, Jericho likely never gets as big without that legendary debut on RAW.

@@docholidae4471 ECW definitely benefited from the wrestling boom as well. They were a Indy promotion that not only got on PPV but landed a Television deal because of that wrestling boom . When I was a kid I had the WWF action figures WCW action figures and the ECW action figures as well the the WCW WWF and ECW video games. Imagine that a Indy promotion with action figures and video games PPV and Tv 😂. ECW was definitely an under represented factor in the Monday night wars …not only did the two major companies raid all of their talent lol but literally stole all of their concepts and called it attitude 😂🤣😂… but aye to the winner goes the spoils and history is told by the winners unfortunately…thankfully I got to experience it in real time and I don’t have to just get part of the story from the winners point of view

Big Kev is right. Kevin and Scott single handedly did create the attitude era along with Biscoff having faith in his invasion angle since he tried it with New Japan a few years earlier.

They didn't create the attitude era. However, they did create the fire under Vince's ass to do something about losing in ratings. Some companies would have folded.
I’m one of those fans that watched both shows switching channels every couple of minutes from u.s.a to tnt. Kevin nash is right the attitude came from the outsiders and then Shawn and hhh. Formed dx. Then Austin started. So yeah. Attitude was fn insane. You could not miss a episode it was the talk in school every Monday every Tuesday. Great time in wrestling for everyone all ages We’re stuck on wrestling If. Nash and hall did not leave. It prob Would not have happened the way it did.

The "attitude" came from Vince Russo stealing ECW's "extreme" stories and implementing those to the WWF. The WWF still didn't change until 1998; specifically, April 1998.

I think ECW was the inspiration, but the true "mainstream" start was the Goldust character. That was off the charts for the time and was the first storyline and character to REALLY tread into uncharted water.
Kev and Scott doing that Outsider thing, Bret Hart getting real and pretty much sparking everything in the wwf that was "attitude" and Brian Pillman doing his loose cannon thing started it all.
Also the catalyst for the "Mr McMahon" character. One of the greatest heels of all time.
Loose Cannon Pillman from 96 on, Loose Canadian Bret from early 97 on and Loose Goose Goldust from 95 on were the catalysts for the gritty cutting edge Attitude Era
But of course NWO also influenced Vince & Vince massively

Kevin nash was a favourite of mine growing up as kid I was so mad when he lost to taker and left. Then he showed up with Scott hall on wcw

@@docholidae4471 yeah I was really bummed out when they didn't book him for Summerslam 03 even though Jericho and Nash had am arc and they even included that arc in their promo videos. It was kind of my reason for going to Summerslam they kept making it seem like he'd be apart of it.

Hulk was wearing black in late 1995 for a few shows when he was working with Giant. However I do agree with this take him & Scott jumping & forming nWo there would have been no dx or attitude era.

Hogan’s ‘95 black run may as well have never existed, with what zero impact it had on the industry. In fact, it’s amazing that Hulk was convinced to take another stab at it despite that original failure.

Attitude era really started because of Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, those 2 guys always had attitude in an era and business where nobody had that "attitude" factor. They gave the product believability and realness, they are the first ones that made the product feel badass.

I think Bret turning heel and his feud with Austin was the beginning of the attitude era but some of Diesel's work definitely is pre-attitude. The "attitude era" to me is just WWF catching up with ECW if you really look back at it. ECW 95-96 was way better than any promotion at the time and definately more intuned with what wrestling fans actually wanted, and also the use of licensed music really helped.

Yep, Diesel and Razor Ramon were headliners in WWE; when they left to go to WCW, it was massive!

WWF had to copy ECW to beat WCW. WCW only did it after it was working for WWF. I wonder if there wasn't the ratings war, would the ECW style spread organically or not?

I think a lot about how Kev always said in those interviews that one of the main reasons he jumped ship was because he had a baby coming and wanted guaranteed money. In a very roundabout way it was actually Tristen's mere existence that completely changed the wrestling business, not just by virtue of the eventual creation of the nWo which leads us into Attitude, but also just in the business sense. Tristen's birth kind of leads us into the way everyone makes their money now.

@@gothot50 When he came back from his quad injury, he came back to a conquering heroes welcome at MSG in Jan of 2002. He was loved by the fans and his victory at WM 18 had secured that. He was the honorable, take no nonsense kind of face where he would let you know he was going to try to take you apart but was going to try to do so fairly.
That is why he was so despised from the 2nd half of 2002 onward when he turned heel to set up the match with HBK at that year's summer slam. I do not disagree with you, I am just explaining why him turning heel after WM 18 would be hard to do. The way I always thought they have done it was that if WWE had honored their contract with Scott. Have Scott take time off after WM with a kayfabe injury but they bring in XPac and Big Show. HBK eventually joins but around Summerslam Scott returns and HHH joins. Big Show would be kicked out of the group which would create the Kliq faction.
Scott and Kevin’s jump was the biggest thing to ever happen in wrestling. There is no argument against that.

Returning To WCW Was Inevitable. Kevin Nash Got InstantlyOver When He Went Back To WCW. Plus He Drew.
For me, Scott Hall was the best thing in the NWO. I lived for his promos. I loved Nash, and he was my mom's favorite wrestler, but I was a die hard Hall fan through and through. I loved him as Razor Ramon, loved him as himself.. I was, and always will be a mark for that man. He was what got me tuning in to WCW in the first place. I LOVED what he and Nash did. I loved their promo style. And I think they absolutely started the attitude era. It changed the game in such a good way.

Nash and Hall jumping is the single most important event in Wrestling history. Without it, there is no eventual attitude era that follows. Which means there is also likely no D-X and no Stone Cold

Post-Survivor Series 95 Diesel was cutting more edgy promos and flipped off Undertaker at the Royal Rumble. They would’ve definitely been more edgy but probably not full 1998. I see it as similar to around Wrestlemania 13.

There’s no question to be had. This is as obvious as obvious gets. I do have to say though it would’ve been interesting to see more of Razor Ramon. That character still had tons of story to be told.

I've already heard hogans early nWo promos were HEAVILY edited for tv because he didn't know how to cut a heel promo. Kinda like how Scott was doing the Cuban accent for 5 years so it was hard for him to drop it in wcw
it's not that it was hard for Hall to drop it. He simply retained his character for a while (and then stopped due to legal reasons)

The real loss and what if. If Brian Pillman hadn’t died, and was healthy. Him and Austin could have had a legendary arc. People still talk about Pillman pulling a gun; and how shocking it was.
When Scott & Kevin left WWF for WCW they saved the business..
May not have been the goal, but what they did was help make two things happen..
1. Made a 2nd company hot again so all the talent had another option to work at..
2. Forced Vince to get motivated/adapt his way of thinking & helped everyone in WWF get real downside guarantees that were actually worth..
As for the Attitude Era anyone who says it was a WWF ONLY thing wasn’t watching imo..
Within a two week period in June-July 96’ the nWo was formed & Austin 3:16 was born, both being the biggest things from the Attitude Era without any doubt..
It’s crazy how so many “fans” blame Kev for WCW downfall when it was more so the bosses and others. Like Kev said though without him and Scott leaving we don’t get the attitude era because they have no need to become edgy to compete. The whole Kliq is basically responsible for what wrestling became and still what the pillars of this era stand on.
Yeah he wasn't responsible for it's downfall.... But played a huge part in it's programming dropping in quality... I dare say if it hadn't gotten so bad it may have continued to be an attractive business that would have easily found investors and another network for it to continue to run as a business and still have two huge companies for the last 22 years... Which may have even kept the quality of WWF up having competition.
That definitely changed the industry and made it the strongest it ever was for both Wcw and Wwe .A great time for wrestling and the fans. 👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️🤘🤘🤘

I wonder if Hall and Nash had of stayed in WWF if he would have beaten Undertaker at WM so they could feud after. Thus ending the streak. Razor would have stayed mid-card and probably fought Austin. Bret would have left for the time he did and probably went for the title against either Shawn or Diesel. Maybe Taker wins it again earlier than WM 13. Meanwhile Hulk and Savage fight Dungeon of Doom for a year and Sting teams with Luger against maybe Harlem Heat. Nothing changes but money lessens and wrestling dies slowly.
That Hall and Nash kickstarted the attitude era is not even up for debate, if you think otherwise you're in the same boat as flat-earthers.

"The Attitude Era" was really just a higher class version of ECW. Where personality and swagger determined the fans allegiance, not 'who is the good guy, who is the bad guy' silly pre-90s mindset. So Nash really was a catalyst for the Attitude Era, which truly began at Survivor Series 95 when Diesel destroyed Bret after losing the title to him at Survivor Series. Vince Russo pushed that angling and edgy storylines gradually, until it was in full bloom at Survivor Series 97 with overt advertising of this direction. But Steve Austin-Bret Hart at Survivor Series 95 and WM12 were not a part of your childhood WWF, it was a new era of realness, no longer cartoon town. Losing all his stars, surely motivated McMahon to change things up, but they were well on their way long before the official start of the Attitude Era.

I don't think Kev could have stayed in New York.
He accomplished everything that an act could in the company at the time. If he stays, Austin, HHH, & Foley stay in the mid-card and Rocky stays in developmental longer and does not debut at Survivor Series.

Summer of 96 was a wild one in many ways so in the fall when I caught wind of how Razor & Diesel were in WCW wrestling under their own names & were with Hogan who had turned heel calling themselves the NWO I jumped back in after not watching for a half dozen years. I had just moved to Vegas & had ringside seats to Nitros & Halloween Havocs and for me personally there was zero chance that happens without Scott & Kevin making the move. Those 2 were the guy's that set things in motion

That good friends better enemies ppv doesn't ever get any credit for probably being the very first wwf programming to have that attitude era edge before Kevin ever stepped foot in wcw to start the nwo...they fought with a guy's prosthetic leg in the crowd and diesel was nasty but Brett and Steve get every bit of credit I personally think that event was an early taste

It's a big benchmark when someone played mindgames with the Undertaker and got inside HIS head for a change. I loved that angle.

Hogan's promo at Bash at the Beach was exactly what it needed to be and was a home run. That being said, it's a shame Hogan didn't continue in that vein as soon after he went back to the over the top cartoonish promos which is why you had Hogan being booed and Hall and Nash being cheered as they kept it real.
Hogan’s promo at BAB was epic. He was a great heel but he was more of the old school antagonist heel while Hall and Nash were more of the modern heels. Hogan needed to be that type heel tho in order to make you hate him and want to see guys like sting, Piper, goldberg ect beat him.
They were supposed to be heels.
Hogan had to be over the top as a heel because whether or not you wanted to see him or not, you paid to see him get his butt whooped by someone who could potentially dethrone him.
He was the perfect foil to Sting, Luger, and the WCW elites just as Piper was a good foil for him.
I've always thought this, and the Montreal screwjob were the two main incident that started the attitude era.
True. WCW pushed WWF into the attitude era. If not for that competition, Vince would still be pushing his talent to be garbage men, cowboys, hockey players etc. while pushing his fart and poop jokes to the masses.

Scott and Kevin going to WCW is solely responsible for nwo hulk heel turn degeneration x and Austin's push and the attitude era as a whole so the greatest heel turn ever two greatest factions ever and by far the biggest superstar ever in the greatest era ever if they don't go to WCW literally wrestling doesn't explode in popularity so basically Scott hall literally is the catalyst for the most important series of events in wrestling history because he was leaving first and got Kevin to come with him he should get all the credit

Scott Hall and Kevin Nash started the attitude era before it was the attitude era. Kevin was especially on WWF. He started showing attitude with his cursing and anger promos about being screwed over. They both went to WCW and started doing more attitude things there with the promos they were cutting. I remember Nash saying..."this is home where the big boys play? We aren't here to play". Plus Hogan promo at BATB ppv. He told the fans,we can stick it brother. WWF copied because what they were doing was working. Had the Outsiders stayed in WWF,no attitude era,still cartoony.

As full of shit as Eric is, he's right when he says the "Nitro" era is more appropriate descriptor for that era than "Attitude." Hall and Nash coming to WCW was the biggest inflection point, arguably, in the history of the industry.

The one aspect being overlooked here is ECW. Regardless of what Nash and Hall did in '96, ECW would've still happened the same way, and a combination of Shane McMahon being a huge fan along with Vince Russo likely still getting on the WWF creative team would've pretty well ensured ECW's influence reaching mainstream wrestling in some way. The Attitude Era as we know it may not have unfolded exactly the same, but I highly doubt WWF goes into the new millennium still leaning on the cartoony New Generation Era. Foley had already arrived before Nash and Hall left, and he and Undertaker were just beginning the feud that would initiate the edgier in-ring style that would eventually become the norm.
Were you a fan then? The point is wwf would not have had a reason to change. If nitro didnt take off (w nwo aka hall and nash jump) wwf WOULD have stayed cartoony. Look at the history. Pre now wwf was cartoony. Nwo kicks their ass. Wwf adapts. Wwf wins.. in years after wcw sale wwf goes back to pg and stops being edgy. Attitude era started as an answer to wcw kicking their ass. The wwf was never going to start Imitating ecw just because.

Attitude was brought upon when Vince got desperate and wanted to push the envelope. He greenlit everything at that point and pushed for grit and attiutde.

To say the least, it would’ve impacted Steve Austin‘s career because without Kevin and Scott, leaving Triple H doesn’t get punished and Austin doesn’t get the king of the ring in 96 which means no Austin 316 promo
All things being equal, Kevin's WCW persona would have been a perfect fit for the WWF Attitude era. Let's say Hall jumps, I can see DX with him, HHH, and HBK.
