Could Israel have prevented Hamas’ October 7th attack?

  • I spoke to Ronen Bergman and Adam Goldman, the New York Times writers who penned a recent article "Israel Knew Hamas’s Attack Plan More Than A Year Ago." They explain that Israel’s failure to prevent Oct. 7 attack was due to three main things: misunderstanding of intent, misjudgment of capabilities, and lack of reliable intelligence.

    Hate to say it, but the first thing I thought when I heard this report was , "Well, a woman gave a dire warning and if a man had done the same, someone would have taken it more seriously". Cannot tell you how many times I and other women have indicated dangerous practices in the workplace, only to be dismissed as "alarmist".

      For years, Netanyahu propped up Hamas. Now it’s blown up in our faces - The premier’s policy of treating the terror group as a partner, at the expense of Abbas and Palestinian statehood, has resulted in wounds that will take Israel years to heal from

      In March 2019, Netanyahu told his Likud colleagues: “Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas … This is part of our strategy - to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.”
      Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who was the Israeli military governor in Gaza in the early 1980s. Segev later told a New York Times reporter that he had helped finance the Palestinian Islamist movement as a “counterweight” to the secularists and leftists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Fatah party, led by Yasser Arafat (who himself referred to Hamas as “a creature of Israel.”)
      “The Israeli government gave me a budget,” the retired brigadier general confessed, “and the military government gives to the mosques.”

    Negotiating more working permits for Gazans worked in Hamas' favor in 3 ways:
    1.Reinforced Israel's belief that Hamas did not want another escalation.
    2.More money brought into Gaza.
    3. *Specific* Hamas-sympathizing Gazans having opportunities to glean intelligence and access to Israel's inner-workings, to report back to Hamas.

      Israel was hopeful those Palestine people wanted to work in Israel to bring home money to pay for life's necessities (food, clothing, shelter, education) and believed in peace between the two countries but in reality, those workers were using Israel to help aid Hamas. So sad really.

    • @user-zb4vc6pn7p
      @user-zb4vc6pn7p 6 месяцев назад

      Everyone is arguing that this war can be done better to avoid civilian deaths EXCEPT Israel but what people are missing is the reason why. Just like Netanyahu wanted Hamas to exist and be the boogie man in Gaza so that Israel can never have peace with Palestinians, there is a NEED by Israel to create a hatred by Palestinians of Israel and OF ISRAEL to Palestinians or else God forbid Peace can happen. This in the eyes of many Israelis is the worst thing that can happen.
      Hamas is ISRAELS experiment gone wrong and unfortunately Palestinians have to pay the price for the clean up. Hamas was encouraged and funded by the Netanyahu government for years with "suitcases full of cash" (read the story if you are unaware) and they allowed other countries to support Hamas as well in full knowledge and encouragement by Israel. Netanyahu wanted Hamas because this way he could end any real talks of peace with the Palestinian people. In the West Bank who recognized Israel and decided to not have any armed resistance to them also put in place the Palestinian authority who acted with IDF to secure the area. If IDF wanted to enter West Bank, the Palestinian authority cleared the way for them to come in and fully cooperated with IDF when needed. This is why they have a bad opinion amongst many Palestinians. What did this get the West Bank...... further take over of land, more settlements, more terrorist settlers, and less chance of any freedom. It is unfortunate that Palestinian civilians who have no control over Hamas that Israel made strong, can now be killed while Israel cleans up the monster they created.

    Hubris. The senior observer was at least treated courteously albeit patronized and dismissed. The junior observer was threatened with disciplinary action if s/he continued to insist on bringing such matters to her commanders.... The commanders who ignored the reports of the observers should lose their positions and be demoted. The observer didn't have a strong enough advocate to have duly delivered professional reports given sufficient credence? Those "men", those "leaders" failed their fellow soldiers, their country, their families, their nation, their mothers, their cohort, the entire world because they "thought" rather than listened to observations. They "commanded" IGNORE. ASSUME is not safe. They had the intelligence reports but lacked the ability to comprehend them. And yes, it is very clear that if a person with a Y chromosome and connections had sanctioned them then the terrorists would perhaps have been trapped and killed with no need to attack Gazan civilians.... The incompetence, the slothful hubris, the inability to LISTEN is just painful to witness. They had a job to do and they failed horribly.
