I was walking through the store not too long ago and this great idea came to me that I wanted to share with you all. Thanks for watching and please leave me a thumbs up (or a thumbs down) as well as a comment!
Excellent idea . Great demonstration. I really thought you were gonna cut a slit in that treestump and insert the other end of the board to provide a solid table as a chopping board . 😃 I was very impressed with the single ended tripod support strength.
well, 2 saturdays ago I went to meet the lads at a survival course. I did bring some food, but no board...the tenderloin and chestnuts I cooked was so good that one of the pupils I had to expel him from the cooking area because after telling him to rejoin the others at the course he told he was already learning to survive...tastefully! ;-)
A trick I've picked up is putting a cheap flying disk (Frisbee) in my kit. It can be used as a cutting board, plate, shallow bowl, entertainment, and many other things, without taking up a lot of space or weighing too much.
Seems like you could easily use this trick to make a Frisbee table. Just by leaving the top ends of the tripod longer to catch the lip. I'll have to grab a cheap Frisbee soon.
That is an AWESOME idea - nice work. You could even use a router to put in another handle on the other end of the board and use two tripods to make a super-strong little kitchen worktop. Love it!
@@adityarizki6683 it's a woodworking tool that cuts a shaped edge in the material you are cutting. Often a groove for joining pieces of furniture or a decorative curved edge. Bigger routers come in a table but you can also get router bits for a handheld drill or Dremel (electric rotary tool). Hope that helps:)
Good idea! I always enjoy seeing people think outside the box. Thanks for sharing. PS: Research has shown that wooden cutting boards have anti-bacterial properties. And, that plastic cutting boards can harbour bacteria in deeps scratches. Pros & cons for using each. I use both in my kitchen.
The problem with using a wooden cutting board in the backcountry is that even though they are properly sanitized with hot water and soap, they take a long time to dry out. So, you're packing a wet cutting board into your backpack which would allow the growth of bacteria. The HDPE cutting board will dry out in just a few minutes. Thank you for watching.
@@WayPointSurvival Agree with you on the practicality of packing a wooden cutting board when hitting the trail. That's why I have a tiny rigid plastic and a larger flexible version in our Grab/Go bags.
So I'm currently setting in the woods, just finished dinner and I am amazed at how sturdy this table was. Thank you so much for this trick. Please keep up the great work.
Good idea. Will look into this. Coincidentally, I just bought 2, just slightly larger cutting boards on sale myself.(Even though I only really needed one).
Yes sir you are the ingenuous young man and you're right I never have thought of that and if anybody else has well they didn't say it. And there we go another tool for the survival kit. Thanks James you always come up with some pretty smart stuff. Have a great day stay safe and keep your powder dry!
Thanks for another great diy idea, James. Depending on the size of the handle, you might be able to use a broom handle or old tent poles for the tripod, perhaps even a collapsible broom handle with several sections
Perfect timing. I just bought the stanley two bowl kit. You are the king of pimping out the two cup kit, (I've pointed many people to this) and I would love to see your hacks for the two bowl kit.
I like the tripod idea! I have a larger version of that board (18x12?) I carry in the van, I cut a hole for a 1/2 pvc threaded adapter fitting in one corner and use a threaded cap to hold it in place. A 1/2" emt pipe 3' long gets pushed in the ground/beach sand. I'll give the tripod idea a try
Very clever ! Cheap, easy & lightweight. Think they would be great on the patio, too. There's usually just so much space & $ for outdoor furniture. These can be taken down & will take very little space to store. Could even spray paint the legs for a decorator touch. 😊 Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing this James!! We always need a place to sit things while out fishing, but don't want to add the weight of a table to our load! God bless and stay safe!
Hello James! U r just amazing! I enjoy watching ur channel, U teach us really cool things to make, very simple anyone can make (unlike other channels that discourages many due to the special tools and or machinery one needs to make) plus the things u put together, is extremely affordable, because we might already have it, can find it, or it’s cheap to buy! Thank u
Very nice video, James! I've been looking for something like this, but didn't want to carry the weight or spend the big bucks on an ultralight version!
Great idea! I like these boards and how they are made in America. I've used these in other projects that needed easily formable plastic by heating with a heat gun. I might caution (the obvious) that they are heat sensitive and will easily bend if over a fire, or a hot pot of boiling liquid is placed on it.
You come up with good ideas, I did it hard school all these yrs lol. I just cleaned off a rock or piece of wood. No telling how many germs I have eaten over the yrs.
Love that idea. A clean surface to prepare and eat stream side trout meal. Always have a few items with me while trout fishing in Michigan. There's something special about have fresh trout lunch by a little fire. This is my trout lunch kit: Fire making stuff, couple sheets of foil, couple paper plates, seasoning salt, half stick of butter, can of baked beans and fork/spoon. I build a fire, season and butter trout, wrap trout in foil pouch and open beans. I then place can of beans next to hot coals and trout pouch on coals until both are cooked. My paper plate is burned in fire, when done and i wash out empty can to pack out. Bush's beans make smaller personal size cans of beans that work well...like 6-8oz. Enjoyed your video and hope folks like what i shared 😃👍. Ralph
I've used that same cutting board and made a spike table with it. Drill a small hole in the center of the board and use a #8 bolt to screw into a crossbow bolt that I also picked up at walmart. I removed the fletching from the crossbow bolt previously. Once the crossbow bolt is screwed to the cutting board, I shove the nock end of the crossbow bolt into the ground. Works great as a side table next to your chair or hammock. (I did add a couple wide washers for a little reinforcement where the crossbow bolt and cutting board attach. I also tried an arrow shaft, but that was too long and flexible) Cost was under $10 and much less than some of the commercially available spike tables (less features too, but for the price difference I'm not complaining)
Great video. I wonder if you could take a stick with a fork in the branches. Turn the fork 90 degrees and catch the other side of the cutting board opposite the hand opening on the other end. You can lean this into the board and it should make this very sturdy. Just my thoughts on this. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate all of your efforts.
Really cool, I like it! I always look forward to your videos because you come up with some great ideas that are way out of the ordinary. Keep up the great job man.
I Like it. You could use another pointy stick just stuck into the ground for the other end of the table. it'll be much more stable. But that trick goes into my camping gear!
Lol!! I use the same thing for a work surface in my semi truck. Between the fridge n closet there’s a gap n small ledge, that ledge is just big enough to set a cup to fill but too short for much else. I take my standard cutting board, that I store in the microwave, and stick it under that closet door gap. Perfect for holding a plate or making a sandwich.
I use the same cutting board, but I drilled 5/8" holes in the corners. It means I need another stick, but I don't need to do any lashing. Just run the sticks thru at an angle.
That's a really neat idea. I carry a thin, flexible cutting board that I cut down to be more packable, so it wouldn't work for this, but it's still neat to see new ways to use gear.
That's a great Idea. I would still go with a wood board, maybe sealed with a rubbing oil like Linseed, so that it would handle a hot coffee cup better. I've softened a board like that before by placing a "Too Warm" cup on it. It stuck to the bottom of the cup and left a ring of rough plastic and it was one of the HDPE types that are most common. Only problem with a board of equal size is that it weighs significantly more than the HDPE version.
The biggest problem with wood boards in the backcountry is that when you wash them and sanitize them using hot soapy water they take a really long time to dry. The plastic version is much easier and quicker to use when you need to pack up and get on your way. Thank you for watching.
Nice hack, I love the cutting board table idea. If you use a wooden board with the same set up as the plastic one, would it be stronger? Plus handle heat better? Great idea!!!
Thank you. Yes, you could use a wooden cutting board and it would handle the heat better. However, you could just use a heat pad like the ones you used to take things out of the oven. Also, when you sanitize a wood cutting board with hot soapy water it takes a very long time to dry out especially stuffed into a backpack and carried all day. This would generally tend to harbor more bacteria than a plastic cutting board which dries off very quickly. Thank you for watching and for your questions.
I always look forward to your Monday videos. As always that's a good hack. If this weather ever breaks I'm planning to get out and try my hand at your creations. You take care.

About in the middle. Of course, the board also bends as it is flexible, so with more weight, you have to cant it at an angle to compensate. For really heavy things, you need to keep it towards the tripod, of course.

@@azraelf.6287, just make sure you get one with a flat top or you will have a problem with things wanting to slide off.
@@DasWolf1968 that or make the tripod top end of the sticks longer to cradle the frisbee upside down.
And you have a Frisbee if you have a friend around.
