This Racing Series DESTROYED Millions Worth of Rare Supercars! | The Story of Fast Masters

  • The Jaguar XJ220 was widely regarded as one of the most impressive supercars upon its release in 1992 and quickly became a collector car with less than 300 produced. But did you know that 12 of them were prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, then crashed together like beater cars in a racing series produced for TV by ESPN?! Fast Masters was a racing series unlike anything you’ve ever seen. $750k cars driven by aging racing drivers 50+ on the 5/8 mile short track of Indianapolis Raceway Park is nothing short of a fever dream, but it really happened! So how did such a ridiculous idea come about? Who were the senior legends from sports like NASCAR, IndyCar, and F1 who competed? And what was the outcome of six nights of racing chaos? This is the ludicrously amazing story of Fast Masters!
    Marshall Pruett has an excellent podcast that features interviews with Terry Lingner, Tony Dowe, and Bobby Unser, as well as a great companion article. Check those out here:

      At the time Ford owned Jag and also Aston Martin, so the XJ220 started life as an Aston before Ford pulled the plug and then the project was revived under the Jaguar name, at which point the budget was much smaller and a bunch of decisions had to be made between concepts and actually putting the thing into production. The Aston DB7 was the same thing but the other way, designed as a successor to the XJR and mostly built with Jaguar resources but ending up as an Aston Martin

At the end senna won in front of lauda, whose performance was the most impressive. missed out on practice time due to TV commitments (as stated during the official broadcast) and could only qualify 14th, but managed to recover to 2nd by the end of the race.

    if you are interested on the future of some of those Fast Master cars well after that show ended TWR took back the cars and 9 of them where turned into the super rare TWR XJ220S and C models (6 of them are XJ220 S that are street legal) and 3 are XJ220 C (competition only) that raced le mans.. If you ask about the remaining ones are those that got totaled and probably used for parts to prep the 9 cars i mentioned.

    It was a dumb idea at the time. IRP has a road course and they could have filmed this earlier in the day and shown it during the Thunder telecast. Jaguar could not sell the cars. The original design was to have the V-12 engine used in the IMSA and Le Mans cars, but Jaguar switched plans to the V-6 and most of the people who had placed orders cancelled them. Not a joke, no one wanted to buy them. So it was not like the company suffered from this. In fact it helped their image in the US from the publicity. But the only car they had at the time was the sedan.

    Yeah, it was wacky.
    But as noted, Jaguar couldn’t give the darn things away after the initial buyers learned the car was getting the V6 rather than the promised V12. The engine compartment looks pitiful as the tiny V6 looks lost in a space designed for the huge V12.
    This one-off series was kinda lIke IROC Jr, only not as well thought out.

      🤣 There's some who'd beg to differ, but for the most part I agree with you! It's always great to see expensive cars actually get used, and it's not like they set out with the intention to destroy them (although I'm sure many people saw it coming!)

      You're absolutely right about that. I bet some of the drivers had even more of a competitive fire in them being that they had been out of pro racing for years before getting into Fast Masters.

    How with all these veteran racing drivers it still turned out to be such a horrible mess is beyond me. On such a simple track layout. People will say it was all worth it to see these cars race instead of gather dust. I will say I'd rather see them in a garage, because I've seen better and closer racing done by amateurs on fraction of the budget. At least Walkinshaw Racing rebuilt a lot of these cars into something better.

    They cranked UP the tire pressures?… isn’t that the opposite of what you’d want lol

    • @themotorsportstory
      @themotorsportstory  3 месяца назад

      My best guess is that it was to prevent the tires from rolling over onto their sidewalls. If you take a corner really fast, it puts a lot of load into the tire to the point where if the pressure is too low, the tire can deflect and cause the side of the tire (which really doesn't offer much grip) to contact the driving surface instead of the treaded part of the tire. It's more of a problem with a harder street tire compared to a softer tire meant for racing.
