DOD1 is quite Eva inspired beyond just Ending E: - the time period of release was right at the height of the Evangelion craze in japan, where pretty much everything popular had some degree of Christian imagery or cultural appropriation with Japanese shinto/buddhist revisionism. Example of adjacent works: FF7, Berserk, Baroque. - Yoko based Furiae off of Rei - the lonliness themes exist in DOD1 as well, especially with how much Inuart simps for Furiae, or how OG Red Girl Manah was obsessed with gaining her abusive mother's acceptance, or Arioch's pedovoric ways... - likewise, NieR Replicant carrys forward the same biblical references as DOD1 with Japanese revisionism and then adds classical fairy tales on top. Also Hamelin Organization using children as weapons against the Legion (who are the result of a virus created by a literal fallen [mother] angel) I think going through the religious references for the entire DoD/NieR series will be amazing, just be mindful of the big 3: - Christianity (all sects) - Buddhism (all sects) - Shintoism (which necessitates some surface level understanding of Taoism and Confucism due to omnipresent Chinese influence in Japanese history) There are references to all 3 religions in all his works, to differing degrees (e.g. Re[in]carnation plays more into Buddhism than usual because, well, _reincarnation_ )
@morgonfr33m4n1337z I hesitate with making a video like this because I'm not a religious expert. But you did give me inspiration to do more research on it! I know evangelion dealt with a lot more Judaism and I am brain farting on the other religion outside of Christianity. But it is interesting. I myself am not religious but this is all very interesting symbolism and really well done when they add it to their stories.
@@GodFireBreakdowns please don't be afraid to offend the religious due to gaps in understanding. As someone with intimate knowledge of both Christianity and Buddhism, I think this will give you excellent content, not to mention the thickness of the subject matter will give you lots of longevity and growth opportunities (from a business perspective at least, but it doesn't hurt to learn something profound along the way) Believe it or not, this will also help in your understanding of language as well, as religion is nearly always the gatekeeper and preserver of high level language (e.g. all the most sophisticated and complex words were primarily used in religious discourse, then were appropriated by science afterwards; though it is a bit unfair to say science "stole" from religion because science itself was a manifestation of religion in the first place!), even in our own English language this is true, but especially with Japanese (ex: the Japanese word for "Nerve" is "shin-kei" [神経]. "shin" [神] means "god"; the most literal translation of "shin-kei" is "god's thread") Like the Japanese population at large, Yoko Taro has an extremely complicated relationship with Religion and Spirituality (the two are different but so closely related) Although Judeo-Christianity has little meaning to them beyond being a cool counter-cultural aesthetic (like Eastern religions are for Hippies in the West), Buddhism and Shintoism is much more important to them and is often woven into the underlying plot (ex: the "cycle of life and death"). The creation myth of Shintoism is also quite important and interesting as well...
Level 1 In a cold land to the north, there lived two sisters who loved each other very much. They made their living as blacksmiths and owned a little workshop in the village. One day, they were working hard as usual when a villager ran in, and told them that their mother - who had been missing since they were little - had been found! Level 2 The sister’s mother was trapped inside a glacier on the top of am mountain, as beautiful as the day she disappeared. The sisters tried to destroy the glacier, but none of their smithing tools could make any impression on the iron-hard glacial ice. Level 3 When nothing else showed any sign of working, one of the sisters said, "Sister, what about one of our swords?" So they took their finest creation, Skald’s Song, and swung it at the glacier. As the blade touched the ice, there was a mighty explosion and the sisters found themselves in the loving arms of their long lost mother. Level 4 "How you’re both grown!" Their mother had survived inside the glacier for all that time. The sisters cried tears of joy and talked so their mother for days on end. When they finally got up to leave, their mother made no attempt to stop them. They were, after all, smiths who commanded fire.
Great video! I agree that it’s too modest of a comment by Yoko Taro. While they do share some themes like the ones you described, character backgrounds and motivations are inherently different. 2B and Rei for example, while superficially similar with the “no emotions” character structure, are different because 2B was hindering her emotions purposefully, while Rei was genuinely still learning about hers. I do think the Ark’s purpose is similar to what Yui describes Eva 01 in the end of evangelion though. In terms of story, I think that’s the closest story element they share. But overall, in my opinion, Automata is more about essence preceding existence, you don’t need a god in the sky to give you meaning. In Eva, the concept of purpose is more attached to the characters and their interactions, particularly “why do you pilot the Eva” And in terms of symbolism and all, the influence has always been present. In Drakengard 1 like you mentioned, the mother angel and Lilith of course, and even “the end of dragonsphere”. But some of the symbols are more widely used, so it’s hard to pin point Evangelion as the sole reference. Again, all my opinion though
@@augustoamaral6084 I 100% agree. I did see another argument that evangelion is how to eat the orange and nier is more of how is the orange made. Which i see to a certain extent. It’s not wrong idk how to explain it. But it is very simplify. I also agree with the symbolism are widely used. Childhoods end i think was ever referenced in Star Trek and Star Wars and a bunch of other sci-fi series.
I also saw Yoko Taro's statement about retelling before and I also thought that he was being modest because as an enjoyer of both series I think that they have fundamental differences between each other. The symbolism, topic of humanity is present in both but the execution is way different.
Id say it leans more towards Persona 5 because of Maruki wanting to create a world without pain but 3,4, and 5 all have themes similar to Evangelion in some way. That would make a wild video tho lol 😮
@CyraTheDead I haven't responded to these comments because I was going back and forth on it. Like how much does persona 3? I don't think it is. Maybe some similarities. I agree with the persona 5 wanting a world without pain. Which is what I think the humanity instrumentality project was. Persona 3 I'm still on the fence about.
@@GodFireBreakdowns Same here, im sort of on the fence about P3 too. The closest thing to human instrumentality is “the Fall” which is all of humanity wanting death but I don’t know too much about it to make good judgement about the similarities. You can definitely do a video on Shinji and MC of P3 on how they both want human connection yet Shinji wants to avoid pain while the MC is willing to open himself up to make life worth living. That’d be a neat analysis.
