Today I'm taking the luxurious Caledonian Sleeper train from Inverness, Scotland all the way down the United Kingdom, to London. I'm going to be sleeping in the best room onboard, of which there are only three - a double ensuite room. The train should take around 12 hours to take me from one side of the country to the other. I've taken lots of sleeper trains recently, and this one is the first in my home country, how does this compare to the likes of Amtrak or indeed the Arctic Express?
As with all my train videos, this will be a comprehensive trip report, from the moment I leave Inverness train station all the way down to London Euston station. We'll take a look at the food, a room tour of my exclusive First Class Cabin, what the shower is like and the amenities provided. I'll also take a look at coach class.

I just quit smoking (day 6) and one of my motivations is being able to take overnight or extended train trips. Just the idea of not having to deal with added stress of being a smoker while traveling is going to be so relieving. All that to say, thanks for the in-depth videos. I'm definitely using them to plan my dream itinerary.

As a new viewer (I only discovered the channel today), I love the train videos. I don't travel anymore, but when I did, I never liked flying. Trains are so much more civilised, and I get to see parts of the world I'll never see with my own eyes, from the comfort of my sofa.
I’ve done this trip, but the London>Fort William route and direction. A far more spectacular route. You want to wake up at 6am for the views over Rannoch Moor and the horseshoe curve is an amazing piece of railway. Worth doing this route for the view alone.
I did this journey in economy when I was in uni coming back from Skye, it was even longer as I got it from Skye! It wasn't very comfortable but I was younger and fitter and got a full night sleep! I then trecked through London with one massive backpack and 2 small ones with many rock samples... (Geologist...) But a good experience all together 🙂
indeed there is no train from Skye, I left Skye on a bus, caught a train from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness, from there to Edinburgh, then to London. 16 hour trip (not including the bus...).

I took the Caladonian Sleeper London to Inverness return twice. The cabin was so small it felt like very small broom cupboard. To get into the bunk bed I had to twist myself around the fixed ladder for the upper berth. With myself in a cabin for two with a modest amount of luggage, it felt very very tight. The train may be new but it ran over old tracks. The train bounced so much that I got very little sleep.
I feel like it might have been a better idea to start from London at night so that in the morning you could see those picturesque Scottish views! It was still a very entertaining and informative video!

Was great seeing the Caledonian Sleeper again! My niece and I traveled from Edinburgh to London a few years ago. The Sleeper car was our 'hotel' for the night and was a reasonably comfortable (we were in a classic room with bunks) and restful experience. I've recommended it to others!
Highly recommend as well the "Glacier Express" in Switzerland. Not that long of a ride but unbelievable beautiful countryside!

And it needs to be said, Switzerland’s scenery outscores Scottish scenery about 10-1. Never quite got this whole Scotland is beautiful thing; it’s bleak, treeless, cold, but fatally, for a so-called ‘mountainous’ country, it lacks real mountains. Even Ben Nevis is not much more than a hillock, in relative terms, compared with the jagged, rugged, stupendous sublimity of the Alps, or the Pyrenees, or the Dolomites. And that’s just Europe. When the Matterhorn is about 4x bigger than ‘big’ Ben, I know which country I’m picking for ‘proper’ scenery.

I undertook part of this journey about ten years ago, before the new stock was introduced. Since I was only travelling form Inverness to Preston and I can usually sleep on a washing line I opted for the seated sleeper. All was well and good to begin with and I slept quite soundly from Inverness to Edinburgh. I was awoken when another train was coupled onto the end at Edinburgh and noticed we were about two hours behind schedule. I dozed off again and woke about two hours later and we were still in Edinburgh! Departure time from Inverness was about 2100 and it was now about 0400 with about another 4 hours to go to my destination. Eleven hours seated on a train is not the most comfortable experience even for me and if I ever have to make the journey again I will definitely book a room.
I took the sleeper from London ti Aviemore a couple of years ago. It was a treat, as it is expensive as you mentioned. But I was only going to be in Scotland for a short time and did not want to waste any time catching up on sleep. I loved the experienced and as a solo female traveller, felt very safe. Loving the vids!

My tip for a nice trip: Try the Overnight Sleeper Train from Munich to Rome. Its very nice and youll see so many different countrysides. I tried it 1 year ago and its the nicest feeling to wake up and to see the typical italian cypresses and the beautiful italian countryside!
does it go through the alps? That would be the main highlight for me if I ever tried it. I love the mountains.

First time watching here from the US. Omg the scenery is breathtaking. Sleepers are not cheap on trains, but worth it for long travels. This is just a few things I can add to my list of travel ideas and places. On February 1, 2022, I had my first smoke free day. Still haven't smoked. My goal to quit is hopefully to be selected as a volunteer for the World Cup in Katar. Luckily trains can be found in every country. Can't wait to see where you go next.
Hi, Will! Thanks for presenting us Caledonian Sleeper! Unfortunately here in my country almost all long-distance passenger trains were deactivated... But it's nice to see that in European countries, in Japan, in China and in USA they were modernized, and trains are an option faster and/or more comfortable and/or more cheaper (although 'cheaper' is not the case of this specific train) than traveling by bus/road or by airplane. I'm not sure where a US train would be more comfortable or cheaper. There's a passenger Amtrak that runs from close to me in Florida all the way to New York City and it costs 2x a round-trip airline ticket PLUS takes 25 hours...you could drive the distance in literally half the time.
In the US you either take a greyhound bus (cheap, uncomfortable), a plane, or drive.

@@randzopyr1038 Definitely not cheaper but the long distance trains in the US west of Chicago are great. Fresh food in the dining car, nice sightseer lounge cars and I think the rooms are very comfortable. I really enjoy when I have the chance to take one.
This one is better from London - Scotland as it means you wake up in the Scottish Highlands as dawn breaks over the idyllic scenery.

I've flown in from US a few times and beautiful views of fishing islands/villages with boats going out to sea around 7am. Always dreamed about actually being in those towns at that time instead of looking down from 30k ft.

I did the sleeper up to Inverness a few times mainly to see the mountains (in the summer, in the snowy winter, etc)... Absolutely spectacular and highly recommended.

I really appreciate your comprehensive videos, Will. I've not done any train travel in such a long time and have been considering doing a cross country trip in the near future. The double bed you had seemed a lovely thing considering the bunks seem so narrow in comparison. And to answer your question, unless there was no choice, I would not want to sleep in the upright position going across Scotland, I'm thinking a sensitive back and those seats are not a great combination. I don't see it ending well for me so having a cabin would be great. It did seem rather pricy to not have a dinner included but if you were driving and had to stay in a hotel and purchase your dinner, it probably out in would even out in the end. This way you had a nice night's sleep, a chance to relax and a good dinner and then the included breakfast. Looks like it was a good trip over all.
Back in 2009 I used to travel from Essex to Carlisle, via London regularly. I tried the CS once but could only afford coach. It was torture. You can never sleep but you also aren't really awake. The track makes the train bounce around, you are always conscious of new passengers every time the train stops. I immediately went back to Virgin during the daytime after that.
The cabins look nice but, and you know this, you could fly to most of Asia for less! Great channel btw

Just found your channel with this video. I'm in the US and love train travel. I have been to England and taken trips lasting several hours, though not 12. I find that our trains sway much more than what I have ridden over there. I've gotten motion sick twice on our trains. 🙄 I appreciate your review of the Caledonian Sleeper and would love to ride it some day.

Last year we did the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston to Inverness and we went in the Economy seats, mainly because I wanted to watch the sunrise over the Scottish Highlands. Apart from the air con being set too low making it really cold, it wasn’t too bad and we managed to get a bit of sleep but I did see the sunrise over the Highlands which was definitely worth it 🤗🤗

This looks amazing! I had the pleasure to live in the UK for two years and had no idea this route existed, instead it took 9 hours to drive from Cambridge to Ben Nevis. £130 (when I checked the website) is well worth the price! If I ever make it back I'm definitely going to do this.
In 1975, I took the Flying Scotsman from London to Edinburg with my father. It wasn’t an overnight, but I remember that the food was delicious!

It'll be our first time to Europe and the first time we'll be using passenger trains as they aren't common in America. @Odd Eyes94, have you ever looked at Amtrak in America? I took an overnight trip from Orlando FL to Raleigh NC on Amtrak and booked a sleeper room. It included dinner and breakfast and had a bathroom with toilet and shower in it. It was a great experience!!
Nice report Will. You'll have to try the Cornish Riviera Paddington-Penzance sleeper, it's the only other sleeper service in the UK. Keep up the good work and happy travels
When I've travelled with Swedish sleeper trains, the private ensuite showers in 1st class sleepers are usually worse in terms of water pressure and hot water than the communal showers for the 2nd class sleepers. But the 1st class sleepers in Sweden also have excellent mattresses (albeit bunks).
I take the Caledonian Sleeper from Inverness to London monthly, and I have to say that I have never had a bad experience. The staff are great and the food scrumptious. The best journey is the return one as, apart from in the depths of the winter, I have breakfast whilst looking out over the Cairngorms. The cost when buying a block of ten tokens is a fraction over £2k for an en suite with bathroom. I convince myself by saying this is reasonable by comparing it with the cost of the alternative flight, train and a hotel that I have to use on odd occasions.
what do You mean the Cost of a block of 10 tokens. That means purchasing 10 rooms for 10 of your staff. Which would work out to approximately 200 pound per unit.

Excellent travel video. We took the Caledonian Sleeper from London to Inverness a few years ago before the trains were updated. It looks better now but we still enjoyed it very much.

Inverness is the perfect city, not too big, not too small. Nice distances away from other cities like Aberdeen (110miles) Perth (111miles) also the river ness running through the city centre is really nice and near some nice walks and loch ness

I did the Caledonian sleeper train on my very first trip to the UK in 06..I went from London to Inverness then caught the train from Inverness to Wick to meet up with fellow clan members, Gunn, for an international clan gathering..we caught the ferry from John O'Groats to the Orkney Isles..beautiful journey..loved going over the Straight and seeing elk from the train...not a sight you get to see here in Australia..

Great video! I would love to ride this train. It occurred to me that the time of year is important. In high summer you could see quite a lot of Scotland as the sun is still up late, combining the efficiency of a sleeper with the scenery of a regular train.

Anyone that hates on someone for how they prefer to have the things they enjoy are deeply insecure. Nothing shows more strength of character than doing the thing you enjoy. You drink your whisky with ice if that's how you like it. Some are better with ice, some without, some with just a drop or two of water. It's subjective, you do you.

Great video as always. My wife and I used to do the Amtrak auto train from Virginia to Florida. We did do coach and it wasn't bad. Although we would request the lower level at check in for easier loo axcess. You leave at 4 pm and arrive around 930 am. One bonus is dinner is included even in coach lol.
I’ve done that ride the opposite way a couple times, but my family had a giant sleeper cab (just the bunks and a bench though)

Thanks to your channel I tried this Sleeper train for myself. Yes it's probably an expensive train journey but it is well worth it. After a nice dinner and a couple of whiskies I slept like a baby and woke up in Scotland. It's great and I will certainly do it again. The only drawback was the lack of hot water in the morning but it was fine, I just went straight to the Avanti West Coast Lounge on arrival in Inverness and had a shower there. Lovely lounge with friendly staff but it could do with somewhere private to dry your hair!
I did this journey about 5 years ago from Fort William. I was using an all-line-rover ticket which is a £500 ticket that you can use in almost every train in the UK in first class for a week. I think the upgrade to first class on the sleeper was £50
Couple of comments. I can agree Station Hotel in Inverness is convenient. Probably the biggest issue is if trying the Caledonian sleeper I’d definitely go northbound. Particularly on services to Inverness and Fort William the scenery in the morning is frankly a lot better than London suburbs. Also if southbound in winter it’s already dark when departing. Finally if going to Glasgow/Edinburgh take the later train and enjoy a show in London.

Hopefully you can try the Night Riviera to Penzance from London Paddington. Paddington station is much more scenic (hello Paddington 🐻 and Victorian era architecture). That train provides access to the lounges where Queen Victoria used to wait. And they have showers at the lounges too.
All comes down to why you're traveling.
The experience or the transport only.
Yes it's expensive for transport, given you can drive it fly for a lot less..... But it's likely good value for the experience alone.

Hi, if anyone here is watching here’s some advice to get the max outta your Caledonian sleeper ticket.
1) Book as far in advance, with a twin berth bunk, you can get tickets for £60 per person for two people if you’re smart (use a rail card, book out of the tourist season etc)
2) If travelling from Scotland to London the rails can get EXTREMELY bumpy due to the remoteness of their railways, the best trick for me to get to sleep is to mess around for abit until midnight (or a bit after) when the train is close to Edinburgh, if on the highland sleeper the train will be here for two/three hours as they join up the three portions before heading up to London hence it’ll be still enough for you to enter really deep sleep where nothing will wake you up until the morning. Between Edinburgh and London, the rails are much smoother with a quieter locomotive hauling the train. If you’re struggling to sleep from London to Scotland, wear ear plugs and know that you’ll get some proper shut eye when at Edinburgh around 3am.
3) Take ur own food on board to eat including some snacks ontop of your allocated breakfast, the cafe car (while delicious…) prices are a joke.
3) Coaches in the U.K. are much narrower compared to European railways (being the first ever nation to adopt the railway has it own disadvantages) so best not to bring a huge suitcase, a hiking backpack/medium sized suitcase will make your life much easier as it’ll fit into the room storage spaces MUCH easier,
4) Don’t get the double bed suites (too expensive), they’re not really worth it for a journey only 10 hours, while being narrow, the bunk beds are extremely comfortable and each room allows you to control the temperature to your preferences.

8:00 around the UK rail network you'll notice 2/3/4/5/8/12 car stop boards for the driver all over the place (yeah there's loads more others too) if you look over his shoulder you'll notice ZZ on a small black board. This is the stop car marker for the sleeper. Lovely little touch that! haha.. off on my first trip on the cally sleeper on Thursday, looking forward to it, especially as I get 75% off being a train driver.
If you have a morning meeting in London, and you have to be in Scotland the day before then this is one of the better options. If you drive you will need to skip the nights sleep, and will not be alert the next day. If you leave Scotland early, and travel the day before, you will need a Hotel in the Southeast that can also be expensive. That said, the train is not the best option, especially at the price paid, as flying would be both quicker and cheaper, even if you need to pay for an extra night in a Scottish hotel. You can get direct flights to London from many Scottish airports including Glasgow (1h15min £49), Edinburgh (1h15min £58), and Aberdeen (1h25min £57), provided you plan ahead. (Prices as advertised 11/4/2022).

I've done a night in the seats a few times and it's surprisingly not that bad! Not the best value for money but definitely a viable option if you're rushing and don't want to splash out on a room
I booked a sleeper car on a train from Detroit to St. Louis in the USA. I thought it would be something similar to what you experienced, but it turned out to be a very cramped space at the top of a double decker train and the sleeping space was two seats that faced each other and could recline into a very small cot like bed. This would have been fine, since it had a complimentary meal and a door that could be closed for privacy. However, it turned into a nightmare because I did not know how much the top of the train sways back and forth. I was immediately motion sick and spent the whole time fighting nausea and could not even eat or sleep. I guess it was like being seasick when you are not even on the ocean. Your experience seemed much better and was probably worth the extra $200 that you paid. I paid $350 for my nightmare and it looks like your trip was more like a dream.

In the 70s I had a job in the RAF which entailed a good deal of travel As an NCO it was ALEAYS second class, on trips to Bristol from Euston our boss would disappear and we would eat something bought at Euston . He had found a loophole that said if you were on a non stopping train over 3 hours you could claim for a meal. Some of our trips required overnight London to Aberdeen. One of our troops discovered an obscure rule that said as a SNCO on overnight it had to be in single birth sleeper, In case you talked, the only sleeper to Aberdeen was 1st class, Great

Imagine doing the length of Scotland to London on one of those high speed trains like they have in Japan! You would be awake to see all that lovely countryside and it could make commuting from Scotland to London a doable thing if they sold discounted monthly passes like they do in Japan.

We can't have those high-speed trains because you need very long stretches of pretty straight track to get up to very high speeds, and unfortunately our tracks were made around 1830 - 1860, when trains went at a maximum of about 30mph and nobody knew that in 180+ years' time there would be trains that could go at 200mph+. So unfortunately our tracks are too curvy. Only the likes of HS2 can fix this.
I worked in Edinburgh for years and would have to travel to London for work sometimes - it would take me as long to visit family in Inverness as it would to get to London by train from Edinburgh!
I took this on Monday night, albeit the bunk beds and, well, I enjoyed the experience in an adventure sort of way, but my sleep tracker said only managed a 2 hour nap all night haha!
Scotland is my Bucket list #1 and by train is a top option, but I'm going to travel through your eyes for now! Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic review! Subscribed too 😊 The current Caladonian Sleeper has had a range of mixed reviews from other RUclipsrs. Seems like your experience was good and the quality looked high. £405 though is on the high side for an overnight train journey, especially in this country. Britain’s railways are definitely not yet at the standard of those on the continent - smoother, quieter and quicker. Not sure I could have a good sleep on a train! However, I can see the advantages of taking one, where you can spend an entire day in London or Scotland and be at your destination 500+ miles away early the next morning (hopefully well rested)! I must say I love the sleeper, ironically where you stepped of at Perth station is where I get on usually about 11.20pm. It's just the best fuss free way to travel, board, luggage in room then into the buffet car for a couple of beers before bed love it.
love Scotland 💕 and love trains ,never done a sleeper train though And love how you described everything in detail but for a 12 hour journey that price is too steep. Did you booked it in advance or just a few days in ahead?
@gilburton The reality doesn't match the idea. It is not a hotel on wheels, more a hostel on wheels. I've only had experience in the cheaper cabins and my experience is sleep is very patchy and you are up early, so good luck feeling refreshed in the morning. With the prices going up all the time, I've come to the conclusion it is better to take a day train (especially if advance tickets are available) and spend an extra night at my destination in a cheap B&B or campsite.
Wow top to bottom in 12hrs.! We have trains in Australia, top to bottom thru the centre 2 nights 3 days & east to west 3 night 4 days.. but we have off train excursions and it is a luxury journey
@@Clivestravelandtrains it is a great way to see a part of Australia that is off the beaten path and spending time in the smaller town is a great way to get a sense of the real Aussie culture and the people.. the trains do come at a price BUT I think it is worth it
This is cool! I'm an American from Texas. My mothers side of the family her biological grandfather (my great grandfather) was from Scotland. Her grandmother (great grandma) was from Canada. Her fathers parents were from Poland. I would love to visit all of the countries my grandparents immigrated from.

I was going to guess about £150-£200 something similar to a night in a hotel with breakfast but £405 is outrageous!
Yeah rail travel here is a joke. It’s cheaper to fly (which it shouldn’t be ethically). I’d love to do it, but the price is extortion.
It is pricey but the sort of person who will pay these sums will not be short of a few bob and wants to get from A to B in comfort or is on expenses.
I did the overnight on this train on the cheapest seats. It was horrible, they barely recline. I was shocked that they hardly reclined at all on a sleeper train.
Agree with this, we had a rough time of it.

I took a train from london up to Edinburgh.then over to Glasgow and up to oban. Then from oban all the way back down to london. Oban to london was a long day! Left early morning and got in at evening. Didn’t know about the sleeper train. Nice!I loved traveling by train!
