If you saw the movie Castaway, that's what Tom Hanks said when he finally got the fire going. "I'm the God of Hell fire! And I give you fire." Then starts jumping around after being hit with the hot ambers. I was the only one in the theater old enough to get the reference.

Arthur Brown is classically trained. His vocals were unmatched. He ushered in the theater aspect to rock and roll, not to mention the banshee screams. Alice Cooper, T-Rex, Kiss, Ozzy, all owe their careers to this man's genius. He's the "grandfather" to all the theatrics, makeup, and stage presence that came in the 70's and 80's. And no, he's not possesed, nor is it devil music.

Hey S&M, great reaction! I get it about the devil thing being off-putting, but it might help to put this in context. 1968 was a tumultuous time in America. Teenagers went from being obedient “mini adults” to outraged about the reality they refused to carry forward and their music reflected that. The Vietnam war was raging, young Americans who weren’t even old enough to vote (you had to be 21), were sent to fight and die. The Civil Rights movement was exploding and not always met with acceptance and support, especially the south. Our heroes and hope for any change, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated that year, young people rebelled with protested and outrageous music such as this was created. Music changed SO much during this period. Arthur Brown (especially this song ), was either loved or hated. I encourage every American to learn more about 1968; a turning point in our country.

He predated Peter Gabriel by a few years, Alice Cooper by 10 years, and Kiss by 15 years...visually, facially, theatrically. I work in a university, and one day on my way to work, one of my neighbours was also on the bus, and he told me a story about how he used to work in a bar in our university, but this was before our university got it's university status... think it was a polytechinc back then. Anyway, the bar he worked in was pretty big and they hosted small gigs. One evening the Crazy World of Arthur Brown was to perform. The staff knew very little about this artist. So, he came on stage in a big robe and hat, triumphantly announced himself by setting fire to his big hat and in a loud booming voice shouted... 'I AM THE GOD OF HELL FIRE!!!', at which point the staff ran onto the stage and put him out with fire extinguishers.

I've been an Arthur Brown fan since December 1967. Looking forward to his new album due in June 2022 regarding his 80th Birthday. Still massively popular by people of all ages. What isn't given credit enough is although Fire was a one hit wonder, somewhere down the line domino effect of so much music and influences that comes after originates from this song. Anything from Atomic Rooster, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and (on the drums ) Palmer, Hawkwind, and the list goes on.

From sexual immorality to living in a selfish, material isolated world . Only the 60s could produce something as bizarre as Arthur Brown (who's British by the way)-his theatrics pre-dates and influenced many in the 70s. while its somewhat of a scary song, it also serves a purpose to live a clean life and to wake up so you don't get burned!

The earliest incarnation of Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, & KISS. The titillation of "Hellfire & damnation" sells.

I haven't read all 218 comments, so this probably mentioned before.
The 'Give him a flower', from the same times, is just the opposite! But a wonderful loving irony about the Flower Power movement of the time. And it's great fun!!! 😂

I saw this guy live in a small club in my home town in the north of England!! He was completely outrageous. With the burning headset and the low ceiling he almost burnt the place down!! Exciting but mad as hell!

In the 60's being a teenager, dancing by yourself and expressing yourself was still new up until rock n roll and pop were invented and went mainstream which took a while to get round the world as there was no internet no satallite TV and not many TV channels with not everyone owning a tv.so his jerky movements were just him trying to express himself.before rock and roll the word teenager hadn't been invented kids were dressed and treated like mini versions of their parents and had to behave no expressing opinions that were different from your parents.the music was big bands were you danced in a couple a certain way.that's why people on the 60's music shows look weird when their dancing cause they were the first.totp is top of the pops BBC music show that ran from 60's-00's you can get alot of performances to react to from there.

Don t know if anyone said what this is about but I had heard it was about the fire showing you what you really are. Like a rich person who climbed to the top and was evil or greedy and now you see what you really did. So I was told. Weird,hu?
