+Rob Chapman hey buddy heres a good one for stregnth ,,, take a small rubber ball the type that you see in coin machines ,,, any ways take this small ball and palm it a squeeze it lightly and fast ,, my father was a music professor/ guitar teacher and player and broke both of his wrists and this is what the doctor said to do and it worked really really well he had monster grip and fast as could be once we found this we all got stronger and faster , and for developing a span lightly slap a basket ball until you van hold it in one hand , it really works and i know i can out stretch Edward Van Halen ,,, i can also hold a basket ball in my left hand arm out stretched ,,, i cant do it with my right LOL but it works great for having a very large stretch , no jokes just while your sitting around it helps with the hammer on and pull offs
I play with a rubber band around the left hand.It helps really to train your muscels. That tip is awesome.Did it the first 2 years doing 'the spider' beginner thing.
Sam Coulson Did you learn that pick on the rug trick also from a Steve Vai workshop? BTW Man I love your playing, I just clicked a vid and I am now going to subscribe and listen to more. Your playing is as tight as a virigin's.... well... let's not go there ;)
Rob Chapman Hey Rob! Just subbed to your channel from this video. Really like your style - keep it entertaining! I just started playing guitar in October and I have a huge interest in learning more about the components to custom build a guitar and get the best sounds, etc. I noticed a bunch of people use the orange brand, is there a specific reason why or is it just personal preference?
+Daniel Phillips Dan.. Orange has a super heavy tone.. like the Black Sabbath tone.. real dirty and heavy...a tube sound.. it is a tube amp... (without sounding real scratchy, like the metal bands now, like a Line 6 sound)
+Brenton Mulquiney You might also have noticed, that he used it to slide with, in the trick with the open chord tuning. Would be quite irritating to get bear all over your guitar.
He was about to get burned with pitchforks when he pulled out the hairband, then people noticed it was the most death metal workout of all times and subbed to the channel.
Dude! That stuff about breath dynamic is AWESOME! It makes so much sense. I've always used my pant leg to shape my pick. Thanks for all the vids. Very entertaining and educational.
i dig the way he talked about how ur ears subconsciously measure the distances from low to high notes on another vid. therefore causing the emotion. alot of people try keep things that wud make someone elsebetter a secret. good teacher imo
rod your an inspiration brother. After i broke my hand i almost gave up on playing, my hand was badly broken and i was told id never be able to play like i used to. Though so of that is true, i feel like im finally getting to where i need to be. Your videos in general have helped a lot my friend. Your very humble and a hell of a guy for wanting to show your secrets to ppl on youtube. We know how guitars usally are with stuff like that! lol. Thanks brother in helping me get to where i want to be
Let's see, this video was released in 2014 and it's now 2016, so I imagine all of the inflatable guitars have been claimed, so I'll take the Orange amp please. :)
The string this is right on, I learned that from my first teacher many years ago, not only is it easy to put them on, but changing strings takes a lot less time.
I don't believe the hair band thing would improve anything , it may feel like but it wont . I did boxing for years and thought using wrist weights would improve speed , hell when I took them of I felt like lighting . I ended up seeing a personal trainer and discussed my training program and he said ditch the weights just practice the movement because practicing with weights will never make you faster if anything maybe slower . Everytime we practice/play our brains are rewiring neurological pathways , every single time . We become more efficient just practicing how we normally would because that is the way our brains our adjusting . Now you throw resistance in and our brains must rewrite our wiring slightly so to speak . not necessarily more efficient we are just compensating for the resistance. I know in boxing I got much faster and more accurate once I ditched the weights . Our brain basically rewires the neurological pathways for most efficiency , throw resistance into the mix and it changes not for the better most times . I know boxing is different to playing guitar but both are skill based where practice is the real key . Look it up the info is out there .
I never thought about it that way, but I suppose it makes sense... I'm speculating, but perhaps the tension/weighted approach is better for a short term warm up rather than long term training. Think of a batter warming up with a donut on the bat and I know that using a hand exerciser before playing a show will have me flying, more so than only running exercises. And for myself getting in "the zone" is more of seamless experience using the weighted approach, like you said taking off the weights you felt like lightning. Again, I don't in fact know, but perhaps long term training in this approach could indeed be detrimental... However, I maintain that using weights/tension to get your muscles to "wake up" prior to an activity would most likely beneficial.
It's not because of the extra resistance; it's because the resistance is all in one place. Plus you have that weight that's gonna want to keep going, so you have to start slowing it down before your elbow locks out and you get hurt. So it messes up your coordination and balance, AND trains you to start to pull the punch early. Try punching in water. It's exactly the same as in air, just harder. But it uses all the muscles in all the same proportions. But you have to get on the heavy bag as soon as you get out of the water as well. You'll find you have more power immediately because you're recruiting more muscle fibers, and you need to cement that extra recruitment in air before your body goes back to being lazy. It really works.
Thebadseed77 There is truth to what you say, you are right that resistance alone doesn't make you faster, and could make you slower. But it comes from the mindset of using resistance for speed training in the wrong way. Resistance alone does NOT make you faster. It makes you stronger. Which isn't helpful for guitar. Again, you are right. But what DOES make you faster is removing the resistance and playing as fast as you can while your muscles are still under the memory influence of the resistance, which WILL be faster than usual (if you just spent 1 minute with resistance). After about 2 minutes, the effect wears off. Before the effect wears off, you MUST stop practicing. Let the muscles recover, and return to 1 minute of resistance. The key is to QUICKLY remove the resistance before you are fatigued, and go right into the speed portion of the drill. With proper timing, the neurological pathways you talked about will respond to the speed portion of the practice. That is why it is so important to STOP before the effect wears off. If you try this and it works (and it does, scientifically proven for athletic performance) you can send me a little cash. Or just say thanks. (Sorry to hear you did it wrong when you were a boxer, and that your trainer didn't understand how to use resistance for speed either.)
i've heard of emulating a singer's phrasing, but the breath awareness brings it into a more physical realm, beyond me speaking sentences in my head as I work out a lead phrase. I appreciate the tip, and kudos to your old manager.
That plectrum on the rug trick actually came from Steve Vai :) He taught this in a workshop ages ago. BTW if any of you have a chance to go to his workshop, even when you're no shredder like Steve or Rob here for that matter, there's lots you take away from it. And he's an all round nice guy as well.
As far as the breathing tip - you could even go the next step and sing/scat every note of the solo. It really helps you internalize the sound of the scale you're playing in addition to using the "breathing" technique. Happy picking!
chappers..... I don't deserve one but would love one of your guitars. I've been watching for a long time now through most of your formats and am in love. keep rocking brotha. we love ya here across the pond
Amazing tips and overall knowledge, Rob. This is the first of your videos I've viewed, and I'm quite sure I've just discovered a gold mine. Thanks for sharing. I'm very excited to see the rest of your videos. Cheers. :-)
Personal tip, drop C. You can still use the top 3 string chord trick but the heavier tones and slacker strings can help if you're new to guitar, also, learn on heavier strings, I learned on 11-49 and now I'm on 10-46 I can bend easier with more control due to the heavier strings training my fingers. Give it a go and play what feels right for you.
I always enjoy your playing you're never trying to show off. You just love to jam out and your vids are helpful as well I love watching y'all pit epiphone lp and Gibson lp against each other lol looking forward to more vids keep rockin
Damn!! Wish I would have been following you when you put this video out!! I missed out on stuff!! Ps your skyrim videos rule dude!! Prs for the win too
Heres a some hacks of mine! -buy picks in bulk online -buy some cheapey pic holders and fix them either side of your amps so you can always grab them -if you're a begginer invest in a rack or stand, you're gonna learn more naturally if you can be bothered to just reach over and have a noodle on guitar -focus on a genre , listen to it learn its commonly used scales and licks :)
Rob Chapman Rob...once again am gonna said that. You`re the coolest youtube guitar player forever! :) So kind and helpful...thank you so much for this little lessons. God bless you. Greeets from Poland
That’s cool that you gave stuff away, and I have been loving he NY XL strings since I found them. I primarily use B maj and C maj tuning (but standard for pissing around with blues) and those lower tunings feel much better with thick strings (11-56 I believe). Thanks for all the awesome videos. Really appreciate the lesson videos to spark new ideas.
I'm not surprised that you can reshape a worn-out pick, but I'm astonished that it works so well on the carpet! I have a scrap of sandpaper on my desk ...up till now that is.
Just stumbled across this video and your channel for the first time. Am starting up playing again after a few years break and find a lot of these very helpful!
The beer he's "drinking" still has the cap on it. xD
"Here's a beer that I'm half through drinking...."
....lid is still on 'beer bottle' :P
While we're on the subject of 'hacks', has he never heard the one about taking the lid off the bottle before you drink it? I find it pretty useful.
That breathing thing is genius. So simple. I cannot believe I never thought of it.
You are welcome sir ;-)
Thanks Rob!!!

***** yeah you might have noticed that he is what is commonly known as a bit of a knob
***** It lasts much longer drinking it that way.
Plus that beer is terrible too ;)
+Brenton Mulquiney You might also have noticed, that he used it to slide with, in the trick with the open chord tuning. Would be quite irritating to get bear all over your guitar.
+Whalturk Yeah I hate getting bear all over my guitar, makes a hell of a mess and their claws scratch the finish
He was about to get burned with pitchforks when he pulled out the hairband, then people noticed it was the most death metal workout of all times and subbed to the channel.

he drank from the bottle with the cap on....
Thats just how it is.

Thats just how it is.
I believe he was doing it as a joke. lol
I think it symbolizes his friendship with the Captain
Omg the open E major.... mind blown. So many doors opened right now!

I love that people still send him letters that's amazing

I remember you telling Phil X about breath dynamics a while back, and thinking to myself, "that's a pretty cool way of looking at it."

0204alvaro just did the same thing
8:50 too funny. I've been doing this with strings since I was a kid. I go two pegs, bend first and then insert. Always works a treat!
Let's see, this video was released in 2014 and it's now 2016, so I imagine all of the inflatable guitars have been claimed, so I'll take the Orange amp please. :)
BoiseG I want one of his beautiful ghost fret guitars, uhhhhh, they're awesome!!!

Major props on the correct use of the word "swag"!
I've just discovered the perfect 13 minute replacement for the sleeping pill.

You're such a stud, you are by far the coolest guy on you tube!
Oooh the strings and the most annoyingly bright guitar picks.. Dropping them is not nearly as annoying when they practically glow in the dark.
First view of your channel and I gotta say this is some great info your passing on and it's also great of you to contribute! Thanks, Rock on!

Mr.Mister tenacious D!
That plectrum on the rug trick actually came from Steve Vai :)

uh the beer isnt even open. Why pretend? "heres a beer im half through drinking." NOT!
yeah what is with that?
It's called fucking around
I cannot believe how well the pick carpet sharpening thing works. It seriously dropped my jaw. I guess I just never realized how soft the plastic is.
i want thing :(
That pick trick is boss!
you talk to much
As far as the breathing tip - you could even go the next step and sing/scat every note of the solo. It really helps you internalize the sound of the scale you're playing in addition to using the "breathing" technique. Happy picking!
Came for the T-Rex thumbnail, stayed for the beer bottle slide. Dude, you are awesome.
Thanks for the plectrum sharpening trick ! I love this kind of tip (pun intended) and its something that I'll be using from now on
Man. How much do you love this guy?
Wow... The first tip helped me so much, you have no idea. I had never thought about that, but it's a fantastic idea.
Awesome tips... thank you. I especially love the breathing concept in #1.
chappers..... I don't deserve one but would love one of your guitars. I've been watching for a long time now through most of your formats and am in love. keep rocking brotha. we love ya here across the pond
I showed this vid to my daughter who is learning guitar. She can't wait to try your hacks.
Thanks Chappers. Your Videos & Guitar Hacks are more than enough. Best of all was when you introduced us all to Nelly. Keep on Jammin.
That hair band trick for left hand is great,i use on right hand like Jim Root.Really stabilise my fingers and i have better focus on picking.
Amazing tips and overall knowledge, Rob. This is the first of your videos I've viewed, and I'm quite sure I've just discovered a gold mine. Thanks for sharing. I'm very excited to see the rest of your videos. Cheers. :-)

At 7:00 when you were about to show the slide with the beer youtube put me randomly a beer commercial :)
haha the pick sharpening one was my favourite pure genius
Thanks Chappers! Great hacks, really like the explanation of open tuning, I never thought of it in that way! Also the pick sharpening was pretty cool!
Cool Tip on saving a pick by sharpening it to a point on carpet!
I absolutely love your breath dynamics technique, my friend. Will be applying that in future. Cheers.
The first trick is the best!!! Thanks man.
You just became my favorite guitarist on youtube! +1 sub
I feel like Steve Vai uses that pick trick with the carpet in a video somewhere too. Really cool.
He did, on a Premier Guitar rig rundown at his studio.
Awsome video Mr. Chapmam! Keep up the hard work mate!
Damn!! Wish I would have been following you when you put this video out!! I missed out on stuff!! Ps your skyrim videos rule dude!! Prs for the win too
May I say, your voice is amazing sir :)
Love your videos, Rob. The fact that you're giving stuff away is pretty awesome too. I hope the good karma comes back at ya in spades!
Very entertaining, as always Rob. Cheers.
Your "Open E" + Beer bottle got me lucky TWICE last night... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Please make other videos like that... :D
Heres a some hacks of mine!
-buy picks in bulk online
-buy some cheapey pic holders and fix them either side of your amps so you can always grab them
-if you're a begginer invest in a rack or stand, you're gonna learn more naturally if you can be bothered to just reach over and have a noodle on guitar
-focus on a genre , listen to it learn its commonly used scales and licks :)
the slide beer is SUPER COOL
You mean the beer that was NOT open, and still (some how ) drank it ?

I'm not surprised that you can reshape a worn-out pick, but I'm astonished that it works so well on the carpet! I have a scrap of sandpaper on my desk ...up till now that is.
OH MY GOD I WAS IN THAT VIDEO
Just stumbled across this video and your channel for the first time. Am starting up playing again after a few years break and find a lot of these very helpful!
