You remind me so much of myself 40 some years ago. I lived in a hand made cabin in the mountains of Colarado. Splitting wood for my cookstove on a stump right in the kitchen. The lifestyle set me up for a long and happy life. Now in my 70's my soul is full with the memories of doing the things I loved. Hope your's is just as full.

Been off grid for 14 years now in the high desert forest. Water harvesting, solar, generator backup, Washer, dryer, microwaves, large oven, 3300 gal water storage, many options for cooking, rocket stove, No end to available wood, just getting too old to keep up anymore. Everyone has their own way to do it but almost anyone can do it if they want to. I've done it all alone after being given maybe a year or two to live because of all the health problems. That was 14 years ago! Doing this made me stronger and greatly extended my life expectancy. I really didn't believe I could survive it but now I'm feeling better than I ever have. It is very lonely however.

It is actually very inspiring to hear that it made you stronger. A lot of us may have different reasons for dreaming about this lifestyle, which in my perspective is probably the closest way to get closer to nature , and to the nature of our purpose in life. Many may however not understand the hectic daily worries of modern cities are not what we as human beings have embedded in our DNA . Survival and the appreciation of living through the purest form is magnificent display gratitude, however long must one choose to live this way .

We have a predator generator, and we were flooded in 2022, all my husband did was drain the fluids and blow everything out, add new fluid and a new battery and it started on the first pull. Our shop had 18+ inches of mud and water run through it. We love it and will buy another when the time comes.

Living off grid is re-creating the late 1800's in style , and it's sweet . I was homeless at one point and except for not having a shower when you want it didn't bother me , it was camping full time.

    memories are so select.
i remember as a baby looking at my grandmothers cooking stove..
my mom had placed me by the stove in a basket.
i do not know the age i was, maybe three or so.
but i remember with clarity the fire crackling thru the air vent on the left side of the stove.
i remember the smell of burning wood, which today i love.
i remember the crackle and snapping as it burned.
the glow lit up the area.
i also remember the rest of the house was ice cold.
they would put me in bed in the next room, and pile blankets on me, then i would tunnel my way into it, and it was like a warm cave, built for me.
at 62, and a successful military career. i am far removed from that period of time.
just once, i would love to be able to experience that moment again.
all of it, the warm stove, the cold bedroom, the smells of cooking, and my mom and grandmother talking.
my mother taking me to the store for food.
the large wheel of cheese on the counter, barrels of candy, two for a penny.
i visit my home town at least once every two years.
i still drive by the old farm house, long gone.
    Charles

Y'all really might wanna consider checking into some wind turbines to augment your power production. Especially during winter months, seems the worse the weather gets, those wind turbines keep on producing power day and night, provided the wind is blowing. Anyways, there are some good diy turbine builds and something like that would be pretty easy to build given your skills. Would really come in handy to keep the chicken shed warm enough so the water wouldn't freeze.

Super smart to char the stumps and setting them on concrete pads! Most of the ancient houses and temples that have survived a few hundred years in Japan that are built out of wood are done this way except they are set on rock pads. They use Cedar which has more rot resistance.

Hey Kyle. I use a dual fuel generator that runs off gas or LP. I run it on just LP and love it. I have a 250 gal LP tank that I use for the generator but mostly for backup heat. Only fill it once a year. Costs around $400 a yr. The generator also has a remote start so in the AM I don’t have to get out of bed to start it…. Sweet. Thought I’d pass it along. Good luck with popple cabin. You worried about insects? Looks like your property was logged off about 30-40 yrs ago. Plenty of good sized trees for cabin.

If it's a system for back-up heat why would you not just plumb in a direct vent propane wall heater since that would be more efficient?

A very wise old man told me that if I want to build a log cabin, select a place with a good strong tree in a level location. Cut the tree down to about 12 feet high and build the cabin around it. Use the tree to attach some rigging to hoist the logs as you build.

Kyle, if those trees are winter cut get a 3000 psi pressure washer it will debark those trees in minutes and you're left with a baby smooth finish on the logs.

My Grampa Jo had a dog named Skeeter. As a young man he and his dad and brother cleared a densely wooded lot in northern Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. That was our family cottage for my mom’s childhood then mine. It didn’t have an indoor bathroom or anything growing up, wood cook stove and we spent many days at the lake. My Grampa retired from his long career as a machinist at a newspaper factory. He sold his house and used that money to turn the cottage into a year round house. He did most of the work himself. But he unfortunately got an aggressive cancer and died right before it was finished 😢 My nana even though she was a city girl lived there into her 80s till she had to go into a nursing home. Somehow it got into my soul though. I love the outdoors and camping and fishing like my Grampa. My hubby is way way up north in Ontario at a wildness lodge outpost. He’s building cabins at a fly in remote outpost then going back to the lodge till fall. He will come home right before I have our sixth baby. We dream of someday being able to buy a little land and do it for ourselves. Thank you for your video ❤❤❤
