Lego Bionicle Review: The Shadow Toa

- Today we're looking at the Shadow Toa, evil versions of the Toa that appeared in the 2001 Bionicle storyline but were never released as sets. Luckily Lego has given us enough black parts over the years for us to have a go at building them ourselves!
#Bionicle #Lego #review
I don’t think I’ve seen any other collector committed enough to make MOCs of all the shadow Toa. Bravo.
Haha, committed or crazy? Who knows. Thanks for watching :)
I did the same thing a year ago except I spray painted Lewas axe and Pohatus shoes black. They look very good. All orange brain stalks as well.
I think I used a flat black Rust-Oleum spray paint.
I actually really like the concept of making their weapons look more twisted and demonic, I would like to see alternative but similar weapons on all of them
Onua: Who are you?!
Shadow Onua: I'm you but, uhh earthier.
Nice work on pohatu and lewa! It's frustrating how close we were to getting all those parts in black
Definitely :(
@@brickthumb I think the easiest way to get their weapons is to 3d print them. Unless you dont have access to a 3d printer, but the way you custom made their weapons is amazing too👍
I thought of a potential Shadow Toa Nuva project, unfortunately I couldn't find the Nuva leg pieces in Black, same for the axle pieces for attaching Gali, Kopaka and Onua's weapons to their feet. I don't know about Kopaka's shield though. Bear in mind that I'm allowing for the use of the Silver pieces, it makes this closer to being achievable and the spirit of the original Toa Nuva is lost otherwise.
@@sparkslash7850 I think Kopaka Nuva's shield piece comes in black. The Nuva armour was recolored in gunmetal grey for Makuta, I bet that would look amazing for Shadow Toa! Its such a shame that those Nuva leg don't coming in black.
Frankly using technic to recreate the weapons for Lewa and Pohatu works very well as they look far more sinister and it looks like an evil version of the weapons. If anything I’d actually suggest trying to do something similar for the other four. Approximate their weapons with other parts to give them a more sinister look and give them something to stand out against the normal versions outside of color scheme. I know there’s another hook like blade piece that comes in several colors (including black as it’s second most common color actually) that could work well for Gali. Not entirely sure how to spice up the weapons for the other three but I think it could be cool and interesting
Oooh yeah that would be cool. Tahu's sword might be tricky to replace with how much a part of his character those flames are, but I'm gonna have a look!
@@brickthumb I imagine you could approximate flames somehow
Would look more sinister also wouldn't look like the shadow toa they are literally the shadow of the actualy toa's much much your own shadow different from you not very much i assume so your idea quite unfitting...
@@brickthumb There was a black version of Vakama Hordika's Blazer Claw released with the Tower of Toa system set. The flame is still orange so it might break the all-black look, but I think it might still fit as a twisted, evil version of Tahu's sword.
@@rapidemboar4625 Oh, good shout! I'll have to give that a try.
I kinda like the idea that the Shadow Toa would have more sinister versions of their originals' weapons, not just the originals. For example, Shadow Tahu having a firey claymore rather than Tahu's normal fire sword, or Shadow Gali's hooks being sharper and more jagged than Gali's.
It's surprising how easy Onua's been since day one, and how hard Lewa and Pohatu are to accurately recreate to this day.
Maybe another 20 years and we'll have the final parts we need...
@@brickthumb those parts are probably discontinued though
These actually look really cool, but it would be even cooler if they had some kind of redish energy effect throughout their bodies (which isn't possible in real life)
Oh, that would be amazing! I guess 3d printing with trans black resin mixed with red could approximate the effect? Especially if you put them on a shelf with red light underneath. Argh that would look so good. Perhaps a project for the future!
@@brickthumb That actually sounds like a cool idea. Hope to see what your future project will be
Without making custom pieces, maybe using red accents would work in the interim?
You can always gently air brush a metallic red for shading to create the effect
You did a great job on approximating the missing pieces!
While skrall was the least important of the stars by far I was very happy they made kopaku's sword in black when it came out and still am pleased with the piece even if the rest of the pieces of the set aside the guard piece and feet where entirely pre existing easily obtained parts
Heya, just to say your presentation is beautiful, especially in this case with such dark colors - well done!
Thank you so much! I started off with a white background but it looked so boring, which is why I got a bit creative! I'm very happy that people seem to be enjoying it :)
Ah man, the toa look SICK in black!
I think in the book the shadow Toa are not all black but corrupted colors. I think Lewa was described as sickly green like a diseased or moldy wood
They look absolutely amazing! I loved Bionicle as a kid. This is like getting a new official wave. Thanks for putting them together.
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!
Im glad im not the only one as a kid that would try and recreate this. So cool to see someone actually did.
Great work, never seen the Shadow Toa in parts-form. Lewa looks awesome in black, easily my favorite.
amazing, good job and really satisfying to see them all "irl" :D
It would be awesome to see the shadow Toa in the comics or in the movie. Great video dude 👍🏻
These shadow bionicles would fit well for a FNAF game…or a Bionicle themed FNAF game.
I remember seeing the shadow toa in the comic books and now you've jogged my memory, I have to make these
Fun fact: "Makuta" is actually (IIRC) a hindi word for black. Meaning this is probably what all Makuta and Makuta constructs should look like in terms of color scheme.
Really? Wow, that makes so much sense. I love how Lego borrowed words from all over for Bionicle, such a shame they had to stop.
The shadow toa look great! Well done on piecing them together.
Going to have a look and see i have enough black parts to build some form of shadow toa..
I have the black Kaukau mask from when I was a kid, I was always disappointed how brown-ish it looked. But with those set, it really makes it pop up from the rest, I'm glad to see it redeemed!
(At least the black mask always had better transparency than the blue one.)
Oh thats so cool, thanks for the upload! ❤
This is awesome I always wanted to try this. Funny, I barely seen that part of the book referenced in any media for like 20 years and now I’ve seen it twice in the span of 7 days lol. Good work!
It's honestly crazy how few mentions there are of these guys online. I honestly thought I'd dreamed them until I started digging back into the lore!
My suggestion for pohatu and lewa's weapons would be to find someone who could 3D print them in black. Doesn't ruin any pre-existing parts that way, and you get accurate weapons. That, or resin cast them.
Those are verry common parts, so it wouldn't be a problem to paint them black hehe
These are amazing, you did a great job at them!
I like the custom weapons a lot as well!
I wish I could see these, but the parts that are black on the original Toa, replaced on the shadow Toa with their element color. (Exception of pins and such)
That would look cool! I will have to try at some point.
Thanks for watching :)
i think your technic axe is wonderful
id love to see more technic approximations of bionicle parts
Thinking about how Kopaka's original sword mold survived all the way up to 2010 makes the Stars line all the more bittersweet.
Your ideas for Lewas axe are pretty neat. Pohatus boots look kinda clunky, I probably wouldve painted them, but hey. You do you, dude. They still look great!
I'd say also *mirror* the weapon placement, since... Well, if you look at your shadow and you raise your right hand, then your shadow raises its left hand.
This video made me discovered the channel. I would like to see more recolors of old Bionicle sets or MOCs inspired from 2001-2003
Working on it! Thanks for watching :)
Man, I used to have a shadow tahu, I loved the way he looked. I probably still have all the pieces, but I used some of them to build a custom Makuta.
These.Look.Amazing. I've always hoped for someone to make the whole toa team in black . Good job! 🖤
Glad you like them, thanks for watching!
I'm actually surprised we never gotten a mask of shadows and a Toa of shadows story arc
I'm really happy to see something so nostalgia for me is coming back to the main stream; bionicle is probably the reason why I love making things so much as a Engineer/Mathematician! To say this sounds really stupid, it's because of lego, and especially bionicle, are the main reason I can think of for making my brain the way it is! ❤
Wow, It's amazing to hear that Bionicle had such a positive impact on your life :)
Those look really slick!
it's amazing how awesome they all look in black thanks for sharing this 😀
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
very cool , love those MOC's
On all of these, the black gear on their backs didn't actually exist in 2001. It first appeared in the "Gigamesh G60" (3806) from the short-lived "Spybotics" theme from 2002 and was mostly seen in Technic sets over the span of thirteen years. Within that time, it also appeared in several Star Wars sets, including both versions of the "Sandcrawler" in '05 (10144), and in 2014 (75059) respectively. However, the only sets I had with it were a Power Miners set (8960) from 2009, and one other minifigure-scale set (7596) from June 2010. Its final appearance was in a Star Wars polybag (30276) during the final four months of 2015. As for Kopaka's shield in black, it first appeared in the "Lunar Launch Site" (6959) from the "Spyrius" theme in 1994, which was among the least expensive sets to have it during the '90s, apart from some "UFO" polybags between 1997 and '99, and a "Town" polybag (1295) in 2000. Although that one was exclusive to Japan as a Kabaya promotional set. After that, it appeared in an early "Designer" set (4099) and the "Police HQ" (7035) from "World City" in 2003. It appeared in five more sets, with its final appearance being in an "Alien Conquest" set (7051) in May 2011. In addition, as Pohatu is the only Toa Mata whose eyes are already transparent orange by default, I wasn't sure what you meant by his shadow counterpart having red eyes, given that the Toa Mata eye stock didn't appear in transparent red until 2004. Even then, the only set it appeared in was one of the Metru Nui Matoran (8611) from the start of that year.
Amazing summary as usual! Funny you should mention the Gigamesh set; I ended up with one by chance a few years ago and was surprised to see the black gears in there. It's that set in particular that started me off making the Shadow Toa.
I'm curious to know what the shadow Toa would look like with actually Red eyes from the Metru Nui Matoran, but alas I don't have any spare at the moment.
You could 3d print the pices you're missing. 3d printing bionicles has become oddly popular. You can make the rubber parts too, with this weird new kind of printing plastic
This fulfills a childhood wish. Amazing work!
Thanks for watching!
These are sick!
Damn these take me back
They all look so cool!
I love realizing how many rare parts i had as a kid.
Sucks that they can't all be made perfectly, but I commend you for your efforts! Personally gonna be making a "black ice" version of Kopaka because it sounds cool and seems to be decently easy.
Never realized the Skral sword is the exactly the same mold as Kopaka's ice sword. Thats crazy
Love these
Luckily, you can find files for 3D printing the mata toa on the internet, which means you could make the shadow toa without painting the axe and foot additions.
They all look dope!
I thought of something funny, imgone the TOa fighting SHadow TOa clones that look like this, at frst it starts with each Toa fighting their own clone, then they just switch to randomly fighting, with sometimes Onua accidently getting attacked by a fellow Toa and the Toa says "Honesly you're kind of hard to tell the difference between you and your clone."
Lol! Yeah, especially in the dark. Maybe Shadow Onua could beat real Onua and secretly take his place in the team...
@@brickthumb Probably in the light too, as in the haze of battle it can sometimes be hard to make out certain details, so the Toa see something black and think it's a SHadow Toa and attack. WOuld be pretty funny.
I like the idea of the shadow toa having more knarly and powerful weapons with different designs
That reminds me of me build the Light toa with Makuta parts as a kid. Not really a dark version, but more a not enlightening one
I'd love to build a team of Light toa, but getting enough parts in pure white to build a team of six is a real pain.
I have vague memories of the books saying the shadow toa were "dirty" colours related to the Toa's elements they copied, like Shadow Gali being the iridiscent brown of an oil slick, Shadow Lewa the color of rotted plants, and Shadow Tahu possibly being smoke coloured. Those colours would be amazing to see, but completely impossible to make real.
If you haven’t yet, you should make their combiner models all in black too.
The Closet thing we will ever get to buildable dark troopers
This is awesome thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching!
I would have loved a Toa of Shadows with a mask of Shadows. Have him pull a Paarthurnax or Green Ranger, by starting off evil, but over time becoming good.
They look beautiful
What a great video ❤ I love a good bionicle content
Thanks for watching :)
It a really obscure piece but the Rock/Bolder does exist in Black
Good spot! I'm working on adding a black boulder, but it's a difficult piece to track down.
What about all 6 Toa as Pohatu (With the Nuva Silver Feet Attachments)
this is so fricking cool
Another thing you could do is have someone 3d print the parts in black instead of making a moc weapon or painting it. (heads up I have a 3d printing business)
Can't wait for the shadow toa kaita
Love to see them as Shadow Toa Nuva if that is at all possible.
Working on it ;) The Toa Nuva are a bit harder though, since the leg bits aren't officially available in black.
I usually just 3d print a piece in the color I want if it's not available in that color
A great idea, but I don't have a 3d printer....yet! Worried about layer lines too. How many parts have you printed?
wait I thought the skrall had a scrawl sword I remember well... Mandela affect
they look cool
Shadow Lewa now has a scythe instead of axe, and Shadow Pohatu has heavy duty foot pads (idk)
Heavy duty foot pads. I like that interpretation. I wonder what other "heavy duty" Toa would look like.
Would it be possible to make the kaita with them?
@@beaglemcteagle-3038 It's definitely possible! I'll have to try it some time.
If so, would you mind maybe showing that off in a short or something like that?
@@beaglemcteagle-3038 Definitely! Might be a little while, with everything else I'm working on, but stay tuned :)
holy hell I had that black hook set
Awesome
Personally I would've thought you'd have to dye/paint some of the pieces if not all of them black, but good to see you didn't need to do that however. :D
can you please share a link to the neck piece that allows you to turn the heads of the toa? please, been looking for quite a while
You can upgrade your Makuta Tohunga to have the same black Mata head as the shadow Toa by using Part 22961: Technic, Axle and Pin Connector Hub 1 Axle. A fantastic newer piece that is a massive upgrade for any McToran, and it comes in a wide range of colors too!
Oh wow, I can't believe I missed that piece. Thanks for pointing it out, definitely going in the next Bricklink order!
@@brickthumb happy to help! It’s been a life saver for my Tohunga collection!
rw:wow this reminds me of the evil versions of the phantom thieves from PERSONA 5 STRIKERS.
I WANT THESE
Ah yes
Tahu, Toa of Genocide
Goth toa
Haha, yeah! Or maybe Emo Toa?
I don't actually have Tahus sword, so I use the ones from Alpha Team.
Shadow Toa: Toa of darkness
The look like dark troopers 😂
I'm not a fan of doing them fully black. I prefer mixing grey in there. Also with their original eye colors or at least all dark red instead of orange hehe
not doing it all black gets a bit tricky when it comes to onua considering the only way to make him darker is by darkening his dark grey. and the next darkest color would be black
Haha, yeah I started off that way, with grey. But they ended up looking a bit like weird team of Onua cultists, at least in my eyes lol. And as Invader Naj said, Shadow Onua just looks like...Onua.
Original eye colours might be a fun switch, but I just love how the neon looks against all the black!
@@InvaderNaj Yeah, Onua is always a problem.
When I was a kid i always though he was a Toa of Shadow. There were no material i could read on my own languange other then the canister, so I had to come up with everything until the movie came out hehe
@@OrdemDoGraveto I used to think onua nuva was makuta lol
Should order 3D prints of the missing weapons
holy poggers this is epic my gathered friends i'm soying soo hard right now!
i remember making a black tahu(using nuva armor and gali nuva's axes.)
made him a dark toa of electricity.
eventually i renamed him to Naga Nuva and swapped his mask out for the silver mask of protection.
still an evil toa of electricity though.
Nice! I was thinking about black Toa Nuva but I'm not sure which bits to use for the legs since I don't think the Nuva legs ever released in black. Which parts did you use?
@@brickthumb rakshi legs.
He's been remade when the reboot toa happened, but back then i used rakshi legs for his arms and legs.
@@Goddess_Ishtar Oh, nice. That's a good way to get the knee articulation that the Nuva never had.
I feel black and grey/silver is a better balance for shadow toas
I almost have a complete Shadow Tahu with parts from bricklink, unfortunately he doesn't have a black Hau though since one of those were 10 bucks
Yeah, the masks aren't cheap on bricklink, but you can grab bargains on ebay if you check random parts lots. Good luck!
I think i got onuas mask and the black limbs i have a bag of them
Damnit, I've wanted to build this for years! Never had the parts...
Check out Bricklink! Its super useful for finding obscure parts :)
@@brickthumb I'm well aware of Bricklink, I was mostly turned off the idea by the lack of lewa's axe, pohati's kickers, and Gali's hook in black (or at least, so I thought until this video, on that last one...)
"Activate the dark troopers"
Haha! I still can't believe they gave the phase 2 dark troopers white bits in Mando. How are they dark troopers if they're not black?
Why did I think those were dark troopers from star wars?
I at one time did Black Tahu, but I've since taken it apart. I could at some point do the full team and use the substitutions that you used for this video. I was wondering if you were going to use spraypaint, and you at least mentioned it. Is it cheating? I don't care.
I guess a little cheating is okay every now and then ;)
I would to see shadow nuva
My brain would have exploded if I saw this when I was 8
I think Im most impressed with shadow gahli
i was gonna ssy 3d print them
0:36 what do you mean those gears are hard to find? they are in almost every single lego technic set in black
Kra Tahu - The Wuss
Kra Lewa - The Beast
Kra Onua - The Chad
Kra Kopaka - The Drama Queen
Kra Pohatu - The Paranoid
Kra Gali - The Nihilist
Also known as "the Shadoa"
What about a Makuta thats the same size as Toa Mata/Nuva & Has Dark Gold Mask & Nuva Armor,
Good idea! I might try that, especially with the metallic dark gray Nuva armour that comes with the 2003 Makuta set.
