As a couple of people have already said, Zach is a three-time cancer survivor, first diagnosed when he was playing college football. The hat and bracelet he wears r from his foundation that he established to purchase for Christmas whatever kids with cancer want, no matter the cost, and to b delivered to the big cancer hospital in Houston, Texas. I can't remember the name of it now, but it's where he was treated. He was developing a comedic act based on his life and stories and had some booked dates, but then Covid-19 happened to us all.

First Southern Fish Fry experience - Lynchburg, VA in the early 80's. I'm Yankee born & bred, but I do know how to cook. I knew the hot sauce was coming - and I made/brought a Louisiana-style remoulade that was a hit. Next month, I got invited back for chittlins. The sweetest Grandmother came up to me and remembered me from the fish fry and whispered in my ear "Just eat the fried ones and pass on the boiled." To this day, I think she saved my life!
This guy is a really amazing person. The charities he uses his story telling to support are a driving force for him. As for my 'black' fish fry experience, I'm a white guy from E Gadsden, AL, all my fish fies and barbecues have been in these situations.

Years ago, I worked with two guys, best friends, that grew up in the Mississippi Delta... They used to tell us the funniest stories, and once they got started, they would have us rolling on the floor laughing!!! Just like this guy!!! And a fish fry is the best! I learned how to skin and gut a catfish in record time!!! 🥰😂❤️😉👍

Your mom is from Texas and she needs to bring you to the south. I am not black but like Zach we had a lot of black friends and went to church dinners, family reunions and black barbecues. We chose the south when my husband retired because we love the people and culture. We never lived in Mississippi but Alabama, Georgia and the Florida panhandle, which is known as LA for Lower Alabama. All of the places we lived it didn’t matter what color you were but if you clicked as friends you were included like a family member. When my husband passed my daughter and son planned the memorial service outside because he loved being outside with all the kids. They had the best barbecue place cater it and everyone, including kids, showed up. The little kids whose grandparents lived in Korea or Africa thought of him as grandpa and since they wanted to be there it was a celebration of his life and some of the kids gave a little Eulogy. My husband would have loved it. When you said meat it made me think of Dreamland Barbecue in Tuscaloosa. They served meat and white bread 🍞 period. Nothing else but sauce. I don’t think it is there anymore because when the owner died his kids sold it and the businessmen who bought it didn’t know barbecue.

Flip flops, or as we know them here in Australia: “thongs”, can DEFINITELY be used as lethal weapons & when I was a kid, my mother could hurl them with lethal, ninja like precision & accuracy 😵😵😵. That’s right, you call them flip-flops in the US but we Aussies know them as thongs or, more appropriately - “Aussie safety boots” 🇦🇺✌️😂🇦🇺
I'm in the US. Grew up in the 60s and 70s. I first knew them as thongs. Then they were called flip flops in the 70s. A big Hawaiian trend happened then. At least in Southern California in High School. Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.

Texas, been there, one the one thing that keeps sticking in my mind is Sams Boat. But man, I have zero complaints about Houston, being the only guy with an Aussie accent at Sams Boat and at TGI Fridays, was an experience that I never thought was possible. Loved it. God bless.
@Katherine Jaymes. I married into a Jamaican family (white guy). Can totally relate! Except for feeling uncomfortable. Great food...a LOT of food. Authentic Jamaican food (getting hungry thinking about it). Caribbeans play dominoes as high intensity sport...slapping tiles, trash talking, and laughs! He should have the black/Caribbean church experience! At every event I was the only white person there...Like a neon light on a moonless night in the country! Fully accepted me. Only one thing that me struggling. When they're first getting to know you, they'll use proper English. When you've been fully accepted, that's out the window...It's Patois time, and you better learn fast, or you're just watching conversations, not participating! Good times!
Sounds like your experience was just like Zach's only a lot more comfortable! We wish we could have been there. We love a large spread of food and a good time. That's a great idea! Hearing Zach's story of his first time at a black church would be hilarious; especially hearing him comment on how long the services are. It sounds like they accepted you pretty quick. If they go slower I have a better chance of understanding, but a group of Jamaicans speaking full speed, and I'm lost again. It helps if you have regular practice; not the case for me any more. I have a few Caribbean friends, but the family connection ended a few years ago.

I've never been to a fishy fry but I've attended a hindu wedding and It was really fun the first thing that happens is you introduced to all the uncles(every man or woman is uncle or aunty) then every aunty comes flying in from all directions to introduce me to their daughters and heavily hinting they single(by this i mean practically shoving me at them while asking how much I earn) after the ceremony which was really nice the food is brought out and my eyes are watering Im not even near the food yet but there's every spice and chilli known to mankind on the table and while there are milder dishes nobody seems willingly to tell you which is which and by the end i was a shivering shaking sweating wreck of a human being.Next thing I know the food is gone and there's a hubbly bubbly going and im being handed i pipe and having never smoked through one before and i took a massive pull and inhale not realizing that you supposed to smoke it like you would a cigar and not inhale and nearly pass out like i did.All in all lovely people but a word of warning if ever attending one yourself do yourself a favor and keep the toilet roll in the fridge for when you get back home😂🤣

Never been to a cookout or fish fry as that doesnt really happen in my country due to the weather but I have been to a jamaican wedding & a few family dinners at my jamaican friends house.. you have to mix with other people, the food is amazing & the people are just the best. The only thing I didn't like is they have fried banana on everything but man I loved the rest of the plate made up for me.. never had rice & fish like it was beautiful. I would love to go to a black barbecue in America, good people eating amazing food with friends & family.. sounds amazing!

The problem with tourism in my country is people tend to go to London & miss so much, I get it because it has the palace, big Ben etc but if you were ever to visit my country I recommend a RUclips channel called wandering ravens, they visit all over the UK.. there is so much more to see than a palace & the country is small enough you could cover it in 2 weeks. 😲 What?! They DEEP FRY turkeys??? I've never heard of such until now. Y'all deep fry too many things in the south! Deep fried Oreos, butter, pickles, cheese, and the list goes on! LOL
@@katherinejaymes2579 Indeed. The deep fried turkey is really good if done right. The hot oil sears the skin first, then you drop the temperature by about 25 degrees and let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes per pound. Lift it out slowly, and let it drain. It's still turkey, but the seared outside keeps the juices in and even the breast meat is moist. If you get the chance to try it, I recommend it. It's really tasty. I have had deep fried Oreos before. They are good, and you usually get four at a time. That's about all you would want per lifetime.

I'm the type that will try anything at least once as long as it's not too exotic. Wow, even the breast meat is moist?! Good to know. @@katherinejaymes2579 It takes a lot of peanut oil and a fryer like the one Zach describes. The oil is salvageable for about 3 to 5 uses...Unless you are frying fish than that's all you can fry with it.
white guy from SC, and i use hot sauce like ketchup...guess im from the deep south where we all are poor and make jokes together, and both races make a joke, to this day, and everyone is invited to the fish fry and bbq, God Bless South Carolina..these cookouts are nothing like mine, i showed up and was treated like a man, and spades you are never delt in without say im in, and bones you can watch without betting...granted i grew up in a predominantly black high school, so i knew how to play spades. dice i always said "NOPE" but please give me a fish fry....hell iall come help come catch them and clean them
I only wear USMC-issue combat boots with the Marine logo (eagle globe and anchor) on them. They're about $250 after you get out (or are a civilian). Not stylish, but it's the most comfortable footwear of all time. I'd bet dollars to donuts that combat boots last a LOT longer than any other footwear to include numbered Jordans.

I spend Thanksgiving with a lovely black family but I never been to a barbeque or fish fry (I work in a restaurant and time off is hard.) Totally would love to sometime, though. I can get down on some fried catfish. Even better would be a crawfish boil! Hooboy!
Well, maybe you should call in sick one day in the spring or summer (tell them it's your allergies or something LOL), and see if you can swing by a black BBQ or fish fry! You'd have a blast at either one! Fried catfish is delicious! 😋
If this 66 year young Aussie had been invited to a fish fry I would have asked if there is a lemon tree any where close, cause I like a squeeze of lemon juice on my fish, or maybe a splash of malt vinegar... If neither was available I would have given the hot sauce a go. 😊😊

I feel Zach's pain I'm 6'10 310, I wear 15's too (well 14.5's but good luck finding them) the only shoes I've found for a decent price are PF Flyers for $50! Yeah full on The Sandlot black on black with the green logo and they go all the way up to 16.5. A regular old pair of black work boots will rip you anywhere from $110 to $250 for size 15. Oh and I was also born and partially raised in South Mississippi, hence my av. (says Mississippi Born above the flag)

First Southern Fish Fry experience - Lynchburg, VA in the early 80's. I'm Yankee born & bred, but I do know how to cook. I knew the hot sauce was coming - and I made/brought a Louisiana-style remoulade that was a hit. Next month, I got invited back for chittlins. The sweetest Grandmother came up to me and remembered me from the fish fry and whispered in my ear "Just eat the fried ones and pass on the boiled." To this day, I think she saved my life!

Your mom is from Texas and she needs to bring you to the south. I am not black but like Zach we had a lot of black friends and went to church dinners, family reunions and black barbecues. We chose the south when my husband retired because we love the people and culture. We never lived in Mississippi but Alabama, Georgia and the Florida panhandle, which is known as LA for Lower Alabama. All of the places we lived it didn’t matter what color you were but if you clicked as friends you were included like a family member. When my husband passed my daughter and son planned the memorial service outside because he loved being outside with all the kids. They had the best barbecue place cater it and everyone, including kids, showed up. The little kids whose grandparents lived in Korea or Africa thought of him as grandpa and since they wanted to be there it was a celebration of his life and some of the kids gave a little Eulogy. My husband would have loved it.
When you said meat it made me think of Dreamland Barbecue in Tuscaloosa. They served meat and white bread 🍞 period. Nothing else but sauce. I don’t think it is there anymore because when the owner died his kids sold it and the businessmen who bought it didn’t know barbecue.

@Katherine Jaymes. I married into a Jamaican family (white guy). Can totally relate! Except for feeling uncomfortable. Great food...a LOT of food. Authentic Jamaican food (getting hungry thinking about it). Caribbeans play dominoes as high intensity sport...slapping tiles, trash talking, and laughs! He should have the black/Caribbean church experience! At every event I was the only white person there...Like a neon light on a moonless night in the country! Fully accepted me. Only one thing that me struggling. When they're first getting to know you, they'll use proper English. When you've been fully accepted, that's out the window...It's Patois time, and you better learn fast, or you're just watching conversations, not participating! Good times!

Hearing Zach's story of his first time at a black church would be hilarious; especially hearing him comment on how long the services are. It sounds like they accepted you pretty quick. If they go slower I have a better chance of understanding, but a group of Jamaicans speaking full speed, and I'm lost again. It helps if you have regular practice; not the case for me any more. I have a few Caribbean friends, but the family connection ended a few years ago.

I've never been to a fishy fry but I've attended a hindu wedding and It was really fun the first thing that happens is you introduced to all the uncles(every man or woman is uncle or aunty) then every aunty comes flying in from all directions to introduce me to their daughters and heavily hinting they single(by this i mean practically shoving me at them while asking how much I earn) after the ceremony which was really nice the food is brought out and my eyes are watering Im not even near the food yet but there's every spice and chilli known to mankind on the table and while there are milder dishes nobody seems willingly to tell you which is which and by the end i was a shivering shaking sweating wreck of a human being.Next thing I know the food is gone and there's a hubbly bubbly going and im being handed i pipe and having never smoked through one before and i took a massive pull and inhale not realizing that you supposed to smoke it like you would a cigar and not inhale and nearly pass out like i did.All in all lovely people but a word of warning if ever attending one yourself do yourself a favor and keep the toilet roll in the fridge for when you get back home😂🤣

Never been to a cookout or fish fry as that doesnt really happen in my country due to the weather but I have been to a jamaican wedding & a few family dinners at my jamaican friends house.. you have to mix with other people, the food is amazing & the people are just the best. The only thing I didn't like is they have fried banana on everything but man I loved the rest of the plate made up for me.. never had rice & fish like it was beautiful.

The problem with tourism in my country is people tend to go to London & miss so much, I get it because it has the palace, big Ben etc but if you were ever to visit my country I recommend a RUclips channel called wandering ravens, they visit all over the UK.. there is so much more to see than a palace & the country is small enough you could cover it in 2 weeks.

😲 What?! They DEEP FRY turkeys??? I've never heard of such until now. Y'all deep fry too many things in the south! Deep fried Oreos, butter, pickles, cheese, and the list goes on! LOL
@@katherinejaymes2579 Indeed. The deep fried turkey is really good if done right. The hot oil sears the skin first, then you drop the temperature by about 25 degrees and let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes per pound. Lift it out slowly, and let it drain. It's still turkey, but the seared outside keeps the juices in and even the breast meat is moist. If you get the chance to try it, I recommend it. It's really tasty. I have had deep fried Oreos before. They are good, and you usually get four at a time. That's about all you would want per lifetime.

@@katherinejaymes2579 It takes a lot of peanut oil and a fryer like the one Zach describes. The oil is salvageable for about 3 to 5 uses...Unless you are frying fish than that's all you can fry with it.
white guy from SC, and i use hot sauce like ketchup...guess im from the deep south where we all are poor and make jokes together, and both races make a joke, to this day, and everyone is invited to the fish fry and bbq, God Bless South Carolina..these cookouts are nothing like mine, i showed up and was treated like a man, and spades you are never delt in without say im in, and bones you can watch without betting...granted i grew up in a predominantly black high school, so i knew how to play spades. dice i always said "NOPE" but please give me a fish fry....hell iall come help come catch them and clean them

I only wear USMC-issue combat boots with the Marine logo (eagle globe and anchor) on them. They're about $250 after you get out (or are a civilian). Not stylish, but it's the most comfortable footwear of all time. I'd bet dollars to donuts that combat boots last a LOT longer than any other footwear to include numbered Jordans.
I also will go top price for shoes is $50 - $60, and I will wait till they are on clearance sale.

@@katherinejaymes2579 Kat you're so sweet❤ i live in Illinois so yes experiencing the Cold weather which for is not so fun but at least im spending it with family and it's Christmas time grateful to be around family during these difficult times for the whole world my dad is Hispanic my mom is white with scottish and irish ancestry i totally get what you mean about product of your environment i live in the suburbs as well myself too some my friends are white black and Mexican all my friends and i we dress similar talk similar and act alike so i completely understand what you're saying hope you guys are staying safe too❤

I feel Zach's pain I'm 6'10 310, I wear 15's too (well 14.5's but good luck finding them) the only shoes I've found for a decent price are PF Flyers for $50! Yeah full on The Sandlot black on black with the green logo and they go all the way up to 16.5. A regular old pair of black work boots will rip you anywhere from $110 to $250 for size 15. Oh and I was also born and partially raised in South Mississippi, hence my av. (says Mississippi Born above the flag)
