He is playing at a high level and still only 22 so I’m sure he’s in the mix for starting places. He’s also had an offer from Inter which fell through and could now be heading to Celtic which I think would be a backwards move. He’s far better off staying in Serie A. His agent doesn’t seem to be doing his best for him as he’s the main reason why those other deals fell through due to the fees he was demanding.

You keep talking about "bringing competition between players" and I get that, the national team must be earned. But don't underestimate the value of confidence : players need stability. Many top players have had bad times in their clubs but flourished in the national team because it was their safe place (Griezmann, Klose, James Rodriguez, Podolski, Zyech, Pogba, Giroud, etc.)
Thats a fair point. He will be still be focussing on those who’ve played at the highest level even if they’re not regulars for their clubs. The best player is not always the most gifted, but the one who fits the system.

One of the things that I’m most hopeful with Poch as USMNT coach is that he will be able to have some increased influence with the European club scene. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of our guys that were mentioned in this video…namely Gio…don’t start seeing an increase in minutes, however small, simply because Poch calls in some favors. Having Poch call a fellow coach or sporting director to ask if they could play one of our guys more or see if they could get a player in for 10 minutes in garbage time hits a bit differently than if/when Berhalter did it.
He doesn’t have that much sway. No national manager has to that degree. No coach is playing a guy as a favour. They have games to win and their jobs depend on it.

And possibly Patrick Schulte at goalkeeper, since our GK pool is in horrific shape at the moment. Some guys need to step up.
