  • The Morning Footy discuss this latest international window for the USMNT and everything that has gone wrong. The team is winless in their last 4 matches now and only scored two goals total in their last two friendlies against Canada and New Zealand. Yes, Mauricio Pochettino is now official, but that doesn't speak for what has been transpiring as of late. Charlie Davies weighs in on the differences between this current team vs when he was on the USMNT. Is it lack of leadership? Are the players just not good enough? Who is to blame? The group then chat about Gregg Berhalter and what he was able to accomplish during his stretch at the helm.
    CBS Sports brings you a channel dedicated to all things soccer in America. This account will be dedicated to providing social coverage of the USMNT as well as MLS, USL, its clubs/players and American players overseas.

      The media and USMNT social media overhype any young player playing in Europe even if they haven’t done anything. They could be 21 years old playing for Dortmund II and get hype.

    • @amontes10
      @amontes10 5 дней назад

      Agreed and I think it's just not the media but the federation and the brands that sponsor each player that magnify the hype. With the exception of Pulisic non of these players has achieved a level of success that warrants the hype but brands want to sell product and the federation wants to sell tickets so they create artificial hype. Give me a team full of guys as talented and hungry to win as Clint Dempsey and watch how far we can go.

      Belgium has their golden generation and they haven't won anything
      It's a term relative to the talent level of the current pool
      This is definitely our golden generation

    • @benoitwaffle5439

      @@FumarMota From 1988-2016, Belgium qualified for one Euros. This generation put them in the quarters twice. After having missing the WCs in 2006 and 2010, they made the quarters in 2014 and finished 3rd in 2018. They haven't won, but have been far more competitive for far longer than Belgium has historically. This US generation has worse results than the one that existed a decade ago. They are no worse than 50-50 to finish this year with a losing record. Also, the US pool does not have an elite goalie. Howard, Friedel, and Keller were. The US has had one for almost all of this century. That is far from insignificant when assessing the pool. If the "more talented" attack still struggles to put up a crooked number, and the goalies aren't great to erase mistakes, then then the team isn't that good.

    • @FumarMota
      @FumarMota 5 дней назад +1

      This team got out of group and has won every tournament in CONCACAF
      But that's besides the point the term golden generation is relative to talent in the player pool not accomplishments
      We've never had a collection of talent like we do now hence golden generation
      The hope is that dovetails into world dominance but that's not always the case
      Belgium lost to Wales in Euros that doesn't make them not a golden generation

    • @benoitwaffle5439
      @benoitwaffle5439 5 дней назад

      @@FumarMota The whole decade of being in contention in every competition they have been when that is far from the norm for a country of less than 12 million people makes them a special generation of players. That country knows it is far from likely they have another Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne, Vertonghen, Witsel, and Coutois come along at the same time for them.
      This US team lost at home to Panama to get eliminated in the group. They scored three goals in four games at the last WC. They have also split the past two Gold Cups, which is basically par for the course regardless as to what caliber of team gets sent. You cannot compare the performances for this team to the one that made the semis of the 2016 Copa and lost in extra time to Belgium a decade ago in a tournament where they could actually score in a tougher group. Those teams played better, and got better results.

    Nico hit it on the head (without saying it directly). This team plays really hard when they are all driven to beat a team like England, and then lack that hunger against other opponents. I would like to see how Scally/Fossey would do in a similar situation that Emma Hayes uses Fox/Rodman. Fox is the typical RB that often stays with the CBs acting as a back 3 as the team builds out and Dunn/Rodman were more of wingbacks with ability to create in the attack. Scally I feel has done a lot to impress defensively and when we look at the CB situation I think we get a lot out of shifting him like this.

      Moving to CB for any player is a massive task. You would need him first to at least play that on his club team. But they love him at Wright back. So I don’t see him shifting to Center back for the national team. Though it would be nice because I trust him more than any of our current Center back pool. Which is sad considering that’s not his position.

If you have a good coach that can get the role across and a willing player, then that would be enough. Actually, the U.S. team only tied 4th place Costa Rica for points in the all important qualifiers for that World cup, while Canada finished #1.
    Of course all countries had to play home & away in the qualifiers, so the U.S. struggled playing on the road (they didn't even qualify in 2018). Luckily 95% of their matches are played at home & almost 100% in all other tournaments since that World cup & that huge advantage will continue through the World cup in 2026.

    When you say stop playing out of the back if you are having trouble breaking the other team’s press, what specifically would you do? Long kicks by the goalkeeper and long goal kicks? Anything else? Maybe focus on rapid counter-attack. It’s hard to tell from watching on TV because you can’t see the whole field, but I thought a lot of the fault when we lost the ball was on the target player rather than the passer. It seemed like the forwards coming back for the ball didn’t make enough space to have time to control or pass the ball before the pressure arrived. The opposing defenders ran faster toward the ball than our target forwards and put them under immediate pressure. Perhaps the team just needs to practice on coordinating the runs back by the attackers with the passes from the defenders - have some understanding between forwards and defenders before the game about exactly where the forwards players will show for the ball. And then it is the forward’s responsibility to get there well before the opponent. Like for example - as often as possible Balogun will start from kickoff spot and run back diagonally at full speed to the right side of midfield. And when Fossey sees him do that he will always sprint toward the sideline where Balo will be able to quickly drop him the ball. Know where each player is going to run to give the teammate a quick outlet. And if the defender seems to be anticipating Balo’s run so that the team needs to adjust, have it agreed in advance which player will give some signal and then Balo will shift his run to starting the same diagonal back run but then turn quickly and go long, so the defender can drop the ball in behind. I wonder if individual groups of 2-3 players, when in or near the same cities, could get together some times outside of the formal camps to work on talking and walking through these systems as a way to try to overcome the limit on team time in camp. Opponents know now that we struggle to break the press, they will usually press us. So do some extra work to prepare for this. And if one guy does the extra work, he starts over the guy that doesn’t. And if in practice somebody fails to be in the agreed spot when needed, he does a ball buster sprint. That is one thing I’d focus on if I were coach. That and have both U.S. soccer and individual highly paid stars put in some money to identify talent at six years old and then give “scholarships” sponsoring underprivileged promising kids to travel to good training and competition.

    When professional players fail, I don’t think commentators and fans should say they were not trying. How would you know? Maybe the coach or teammates could address that. But usually when a fan says someone is not trying it just means the fan is disappointed that the player was not effective on that day. I really don’t think, when the USMNT fails to win, that it is likely caused by a widespread player lack of effort. There are skill levels, speed, conditioning and injury issues, tactics and other things that affect outcomes. Effort is essential,but not sufficient, and lack of success does not necessarily indicate lack of effort. If it makes people feel good to complain about the effort level, fine, but I don’t think that such complaining is likely to have much benefit. Do you think that all it would have taken for the U.S. team to perform better in this window is more effort? There are other issues to address.

    • @dabombgiggity123
      @dabombgiggity123 4 дня назад

      No one on earth is saying the only reason we played poorly this window is because of effort. And if you actually watch this team play every game, you can clearly see the intensity difference that has occurred over the last year (unless we're playing Mexico). Maybe some casual viewers say that because a player wasn't effective, but anyone who follows this team regularly over the years can easily tell how things have changed. Most people are complaining about it because they aren't new here. I can't speak for the ones who are.
