  • This is a classic F.A Cup final involving the Gunners. Admittedly I wasn't even born then (two years later) but it was one of the classic F.A Cup Finals of all time with a fantastic ending. You might recognise some faces here as well... a lot younger then they were!
I was lucky enough to catch this game on The Match Revisited on ITV4 the other day, definitely felt it was worth a youTube upload.
Anyway, watch to the end, even if you weren't a twinkle in your mum's eye, this is great viewing for any footy fan.

I am a massive United supporter but Brady was something else. Glad it was before my time, would still be pissed off about it now.
Can't imagine the shirt swapping and collecting the trophy in them nowadays

I was there behind the goal when Mciloy scored. The happiest moment of my life so far - then Sunderland scored the winner which was the worst moment. I felt i'd lived a lot for a 16 year od that day but i'm glad i was there for a classic wembley final. I still feel sick when i see the last goal go in33 years later. Liam Brady was a star and in those days both sets of fans stuck around for a proper lap of honour.

These were the days when the whole family would look forward to the FA Cup final, it was real special day, silly things like watching the teams leave their hotel with a police escort, the whole day would be spent in front of the box watching the build up. I remember this game so well, was 11 at the time. Shame football has been ruined by money.

This is an iconic game. Such an EXCITING game. A pal from school - an avid Man U supporter and me a Gooner aged 12 - had a bet with each other, a full weeks pocket money on this game. £5 was a lot of dough in those days = )

Will never forget that game - Alan Sunderland, what a hero he was. Totally euphoric when he put that in - I just remember the ball coming over and thinking there was no way it would get through to him. But it did! What a party that night!

I can remember watching this as a 9 year old kid like it was yesterday. I'm a Man United supporter and this was probably my favourite final and definitely 1 of the most exciting ones, and I can remember every final pretty well from 1976 up until about 1991. It was a yearly event in our house and it'd be on from 10-11 am or whatever time the build up, the Question of Sport special etc, until early evening after the celebrations and the goals from the Scottish Cup final as well, great days . I can remember the feelings of sadness & misery as we were losing 2-0, the excitement when we pulled it back to 2-2, and finally being gutted again when Alan Sunderland made it 3-2 and seeing his lips say 'you bastard' as he ran away celebrating. 😆
Ahh the FA Cup back in the days when it meant a lot, and was 1 of the most prestigious footy competitions in the world. Teams WANTED to win it, there wasn't much of the 'weakened teams' bollocks that we see today, I wonder what changed. It seemed to drop in stature when Sky started to own the rights to football broadcasting......one of the funnier reasons I thought of is that I don't think the FA Cup isn't shown on Sky Sports, in the same way they don't show any pre-premier league football from the 70's, 80's etc, a lot of younger footy viewers who only watch Sky sports never get to see any of it, and it's almost like 'if the football isn't shown on Sky, then it doesn't, or has never existed.'

Remember this like it was last week. I'd been supporting United all 10 year of my life and after the disapointment of loosing to Southampton in '76 and the elation of beating Liverpool in '77 this was a very special game which I'd been looking forward to for weeks. When my Northern Ireland hero Sammy Mac knocked in that equaliser I remember nearly knocking the old B&W TV of the table :-) Only to feel the most total horror I'd ever experience in my short life a minute later. What a Game!

I can still remember watching this game in a Glasgow youth club. Because of the fight back everyone was cheering for United. When they equalised everyone got up ran around outside and then got back just to see Arsenal score the winner. The place went silent and everyone went home disappointed. However those Rangers, Celtic, Leeds, Hearts and Hibs fans always had a soft spot for Manchester United from that day to this. They became everyone's favourite English club and loved the FA Cup wins of 1983, 1985 and 1996.......well apart from the Leed's fan obviously 😂

Just watched this (again) on ITV4. I was at this game as a neutral, having won the ticket in a draw at our Referees' Association (Cambs). I was standing to the left of the cameras pretty much above the corner flag. There were Arsenal fans in the block below, and Man U fans in the block above. And so we come to the last 5 minutes ...
I can recall the first MU goal; MU fans started going crazy, Arsenal fans still not particularly bothered
In goes the second goal. Absolute pandemanium amongst the MU fans, with the A fans going silent.
Then, 30 seconds later .. the MU fans take a collective breath to start screaming again and .. stunned silence .. followed by the A fans just going completely mental.
The neutrals - the block I was in only had neutrals, just stood looking around at the two sets of fans amused at the complete but unexpected turn of events.
I did manage to attend 2 finals as a benefit of being a local referee, but I have to say that this was the most memorable. Still didn't compare with the emotions experienced at the England v Poland World Cup game in '73 though ..

I distinctly remember watching this match as a 10-year-old: a gorgeous sunny day. I was in the front room of our house and wouldn't leave despite the glorious weather. I remember the side panel of the window being open and the long white curtain flipping in and out in the breeze. I was enthralled by the game and when Sunderland scored I jumped up and roared. I'm a Liverpool fan but loved Liam Brady and Stapo. That game reminds me of innocence, summer, light and the breeze. A magnificent football moment.

My favourite FA Cup final ever...until this year...Arsenal fans get taken through the ringer more often than not but so sweet when we win..I remember this Arsenal side when I was a kid and the potential they had to take on Liverpool, Nottingham Forest as the major premiership challengers in the early 80s..Jennings, Pat Rice, O'Leary, Stapleton, Sunderland and of course the great Liam Brady..Brady left around 82/83 and the Gunners were quiet the rest of the decade (anyone remember Charlie Nicholas?)

I was just turned 18 in my 'Jam' shoes and jeans with thousands of other Gooners from the North Bank.
It was one, if not the most exciting finals ever and when Alan Sunderland scored the winner, several hundred people fell over in the excitement and pressure as the crowd surged. I was hugging a bloke from London and we were in tears of happiness. I lost the right heel of my shoe in the crush (which made the journey home very interesting) and lost my voice from singing and shouting. Unforgettable

Pretty much symbolic of what he did to the United defence that day. A great, great player, worth £100 million at todays prices. Gordon McQueen blamed Macari and Mickey Thomas for Arsenal's 3rd goal, rather than Gary Bailey. He said that if they'd stayed on their feet when Brady ran through, instead of lunging in, they'd have stopped him passing it to Rix on the left. Not sure myself.

Sometimes having too much is a bad thing. Virtually a game on every night on TV today and I cannot be bothered to watch it and I love football....loads of foreign players passing through not really connected to the club or fans.
The FA Cup remember was one of the few club games (Charity Shield or the odd European game if an English team was involved) shown on TV in those days so was a special occassion.
You cannot get it back to it's special status, Clubs get more money for a PL place than winning the cup and are now fielding weak teams, and the very big clubs think of the Champions League. The stupid FA have made it devalued by moving it to 5pm as well.....doesnt feel as special any more.

@warpfield98 The FA Cup winners automatically qualify for one of three English places in the Europa League. Unless they've already qualified for the Champions League - so that usually means the runners-up these days. (The FA and the Premier League banned Portsmouth this season though due to their financial troubles. Otherwise Liverpool wouldn't have been in Europe this year.)
