  • I was very fortunate to catch this game on ESPN Classic the other day, and had to record it to keep, and to get on RUclips. I remember this game like it was yesterday (I was 12 years old at the time) and it is the only silverware I've seen Arsenal pick up in Europe... sadly :(
    Parma, as you will see from this footage, had the majority of the chances, but we won with Alan Smith's legendary strike in the 20th minute and that's all that matters!
    I completely forgot Zola and Asprilla played for Parma then too :)

      hahahaha....are you stupid or not?....Parma dominated that match....and the equalizer goal in the 90th minute was totally regular...but that stupid ref gave it very wrongly offside......watch it carefully,...the player who stops the ball with his chest and goes towards the keeper is in a very regular position..........and it's funny how the english commentators said "it was a brilliant decision from the ref" 🤣🤣🤣...totally fraud from ref.

      Aye. It has. Just think about Parma itself: it used to be a wee bit like, say, Watford, a club which had always spent its years in the second or third division... then hyper-thief Callisto Tanzi of Parmalat bought it, brought it up in 'Serie A' at the very beginning of the '90s and transformed it into a top club... same thing that happened to Lazio, another club that had always slipped between Serie A and B, all of a sudden they became a top team under mega-thief Srgio Cragnotti...
      After naming these two minor clubs it is very easy to understand why Italian clubs in the '90s were so strong: they were owned by corrupted people, that's it. Berlusconi, well, we all know who this guy is and how he managed to avoid trials and sentences... the club he had bought, AC Milan (though he was an Inter fan), became the strongest in Europe for years... almost reaching the stereotypical Italian powerful club, Juve, one that had always been run by Italy's true reigning dynasty, the Agnelli and their whole lot = Fiat/Ferrari/Juventus... Inter Milan were a bit less lucky than their usual 'partners in crime' (Inter Milan has always been run or at least controlled by Italian oil tycoons), their team was not as good as the ones I've just mentioned, they finally made it in the 00s and I can assure you they stole matches like any other 'powerful club' and most of all Inter was awarded of a league title after Juve and Milan had been penalised for their involvement in the 'Calciopoli' scandal... no-one knows yet why the 2004-2005 league title was never awarded to any club whereas the following one was given to Inter... or maybe we do know it, they were the 'next in line' in terms of political power...
      Naw, lads, you canNOT rise to superstardom if you don't know or just can't steal and corrupt referees.
      Ask the Spaniards and they'll tell you what they know about Real Madrid, for instance...
      Liverpool was also blessed by referees in foreign competitions in the '80s...

      The Cup Winners Cup was the C2 the second biggest trophy in Europe after the European Cup/Champions League/C1.
      It merged with the Uefa Cup also known as C3 (third cup) to become the Europa League.
      You are right all 3 of them were major back then.
      Remember before the European Cup was re-branded as the Champions League only teams who have won their domestic league in Europe could participate in the competition.
      It means United's treble winners 99' would not have participated in the tournament as Arsenal did the double and had the right to claim the only spot available for England.
      Same goes for Liverpool 2005 and 2019 and for Chelsea 2012.
      In England only Man Utd won it the correct way in 2008 by winning the league the previous season.
      As you can guess if we had the old European Cup a lot of teams wouldn't have the same numbers today like Real Madrid with only 9 trophies instead of 13.
      The Champions League is a joke

For example the fourth placed team in one nation's domestic league is appropriately considered more stronger than the champion of a league lower ranked in the coefficient.

      I am English, but never had Sky TV and so I only ever saw highlights of English league games growing up. I was becoming more interested in football as I matured and so, when I discovered Italian football on Channel 4 in early 1993, I was hooked and became a big fan of Italian football. Live matches from this warmer European neighbour every week, teams of which I knew little beyond their famous names (the Milan clubs, Napoli, Juve, Samp etc.), it was great. Parma were the exciting upstarts in Serie A, coming out of nowhere at the start of the decade and threatening (but never quite managing) to challenge for Lo Scudetto. My school friends teased me about the Italian game being overly defensive and negative, so when Arsenal played in such a defensive manner- essentially catenaccio- I felt pretty miffed! Football commentators often criticised the Italians for being negative too, so for an English team to overcome the more attack-minded Parma in this manner annoyed me a bit. Where was the acknowledgement of the stereotypical roles being reversed?! That's how I felt at the time :)

    Why is it Arsenal find it hard to win European trophies? As an Arsenal fan, I like to see Arsenal win more European trophies. Arsenal won a European trophy in 1970, then had to wait 24 years to win the European Cup Winners Cup. It's now been now 27 years since Arsenal won a European trophy. That's too long for a club like Arsenal. Arsenal is abysmal at winning European trophies.

    • @mikemasters6275
      @mikemasters6275 9 лет назад +35

      Well a big part of the reason is that Arsenal have simply underachieved in Europe. But there are also fewer European trophies to win now. In the old system, there were three major trophies and there were very good teams in all three tournaments. Today, teams that finish second through fourth in England all go to the Champions League, which is an incredibly hard tournament to win now because all the best teams are in it. The expansion of the Champions League changed everything.
      This is why the Europa League is so meaningless with teams dropping down from the Champions League into it. In 2013, Chelsea won the Europa League, and on paper they won a major European trophy. But in reality, that was a consolation in a majorly disappointing season for them in Europe.
      Arsenal probably could have won the Europa League one of these seasons, but they have never even competed in it because they always qualify for the Champions League knockout stages. Their teams of the late 90s/early 2000s would have been among the favorites in the UEFA Cup or CWC in the old format in years which they weren't champions. The 2006 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona was heartbreaking.
      Also, a huge amount of Arsenal's success came before the European competitions existed.

    People going on about Manchester United 1999. But people forget that Arsenal won the cup winners' cup in the mid-90s. I forgot about this. I think they got to the final season after. Just think they almost missed out of qualifying as Sheffield Wednesday gave them a tough time in the F.A cup final. Taking it to a replay and a last minute goal. Only Arsenal could have beaten Wednesday that season too. George Graham sort of known keepin' it tight where they could win trophies just by winning 1-0 a game. There was kind of unstoppable cup team. And only a fluke by nayim that they missed out in the cup final season after.

    From my point of view, the cup winners should play UEFA Champions League, because it´s much more complicated winning a championship like this than reaching the 3rd or 4th position in a domestic league.

    • @InternetVegetable8541
      @InternetVegetable8541 8 месяцев назад

      😂 It's much harder to finish 4th or 5th in the league where you need to be consistent against teams on your level over 38 games, than it is to win a cup where you play a maximum 6 or 7 matches against randomly drawn opponents who could come from any division. By this logic we would have had teams like Wigan Athletic & Portsmouth in the Champions League.

    • @guillermoramos9788
      @guillermoramos9788 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@InternetVegetable8541 but what you mentioned in your previous message rarely happens, the cup winner is normally a good team, in England for instance the FA Cup, a team must play consistently, because they are forced to beat many opponents, in the late stage of the competition they're usually drawn with big teams, at the end of the day, you could win a trophy the 4th or the 5th get nothing. Sorry these are my thoughts about this championship, anyway, good discussion with you, regards from Spain, Sorry for my English.

    No, I'm talking about UEFA's restrictions on foreign players. At the time of this match, English clubs still had to field a minimum of six English players, Italian clubs still had to field a min of six Italian players, and so on... The ban wasn't lifted until the Bosman ruling, which came in the 95/96 season.

    That Arsenal defensive backbone left behind by George Graham was the reason that Arsenal had so much success from the late 90s to the early 00s. It comes as no surprise that as soon as that backbone had completely gone Wenger couldn't land the big trophies. That defence gave Arsenal the license to play their stylish attacking football, but without a good defence it laves so much holes in the back.

    • @jondoe-du2fr
      @jondoe-du2fr 6 лет назад +5

      +Peace Dweller. I wouldn't say that exactly. How many of that George Graham backbone was in our invincibles sqaud? We landed a Prem title and 2 FA Cups as Wenger found unity with Cole, Campbell, Touré and Lauren. Not to mention a strong core with Lehmann, Vieira and Gilberto. The reason why our club deminished is purely due to our reluctance to spend any real money for an extended period after '04, and instead turn to youth. Arsenal chose to sign cheap possible pontential instead of expensive obvious potential (with the exception of José Antonio Reyes). Players like Eboué, Senderos, Djourou, Clichy and Flamini. None of those guys turned into real superstars or still play at the top level. The only expection was probably van Persie, if you overlook his injuries. And of course Fabregas too, but he is classed as home-grown talent.

    • @lijiaming2359
      @lijiaming2359 5 лет назад +3

      That is why George Graham is the second legendary manager in Arsenal’s history and Wenger is nothing. Winning an international trophy is far more important than any trophy within England.

    • @lijiaming2359
      @lijiaming2359 5 лет назад +1

      jondoe1980 Wenger took the responsibility to make transfer. So you cannot say that the club did not give him support without money. Actually he was the most powerful manager and he made the choice to buy rubbish defenders. And in his latest three years Arsenal actually gave him adequate money to buy players but he chose Xhaka, Chambers and Aubameyang who must be not necessary for the squad. Let’s face it: Wenger’s philosophy and wrong decision destroyed this club. And all his legacy is nothing but problems.

    • @joeybill9472
      @joeybill9472 5 лет назад +3

      Agreed people actually forget this is the reason why we won the double in 98, Wenger inherited a great team and added some flare like Viera, Petit, Overmars and Anelka which is what most good manager's do!
      George Graham doesn't get the credit he deserves! He won us two league's aswell! Never went more than 2 season's without a trophy!

      This stopped being a tournament worth winning about 10 years before. This game was played only 5 years before UEFA scrapped it due to lack of spectator interest & teams fielding weakened sides. By 1994 this was basically the Conference League 😅

    No, just the FA Cup winners (or runners up if the FA Cup winners had qualified for the European Cup/Champions League), were allowed in.
    The League Cup winners joined the 2nd, 3rd & 4th (and occasionally 5th) placed teams in the far more competitive & superior UEFA Cup
