Howdy cousin. Otilda (Heisz) Meckle was my Great Grandmother.
Kinda weird you didn't show how to build the tracks ? I would think that part is integral.
I love the auto captions when you run that maple over the jointer:
[APPLAUSE]
[MUSIC]
And when you close it at the end, more applause.
Well done.
Beautiful door... But the tracks are a pretty important part of the project, and there's no discussion or demonstration of how they were made or even what they look like. Critical omission.
Just google search "Tambour track" lots of it out there.
Love this idea. I think I will attempt to make this when I finish off my kitchen. I really like the look of the spalted maple.
Really nice. The thumbnail makes it look as big as a garage door
I've made quite a few of those in days gone by. This reminds me of working in the shop with my dad. It also reminds me just how much I miss him.
I am sorry for your loss. I miss my Dad too.
he is probably looking over your shoulder
@@sosteve9113, That's a nice thought. I'll keep that one close.
Another innovative build & great video, John. I appreciate you showing the adjustments you needed to make. It’s easy to assume your talents make it so you just throw things together & they fall into place perfectly for you.
I'm a qualified cabinet maker, not often I see a knowledgable carpenter on RUclips. Great job,
I've always wanted to make one of these doors. My daughters house came with one in the kitchen and it sat open 99% of the time, lol. Great work John.
Nice work John!
Thank you Jon :)
The 'tambour' in tambour door means 'drum' in French. This is a reference to the door rolling up in a drum, hence the name.
That is what I thought too.
I understand the linear track he did for the limited space to work with, but what would the door be called with a linear track instead of rolling up?
That looks incredible John. I will have to attempt that when I get around to remodeling our kitchen, which my wife has been asking me to do off and on for the last year or two lol.
I normally don’t like tambour doors, but that is beautiful. I wish I could like the video more than once
There are loads of wood working projects on the web and YT that you can get wrapped up in, most are "yawn", but occasionally, just occasionally there are some that tickle the imagination, for me this is one such project. Nice work.
Superb work! That spalted maple looks so classy! What artistry!
I was watching this with rapt attention then noticed you were wearing a Rush 2112 t-shirt while fitting the door into the cabinet. Awesome! Great job on the door, too...
The best part... seeing a Rush 2112 T-shirt... :-)
John, That is one very nice and useful project! Looks great the way you put it together also! Thanks.
Thanks, Mac :)
I never knew how all the slats were connected on these types of doors but it's so amazingly simple that I think I need to make one of these soon. Adds a real nice touch to the kitchen!
Great build.
Great music.
Nice to see a well made roll top done for a change, well done sir
Nice 2112 t-shirt!
Love watching your work John.
Beautiful
Looks simple enough for a newbie to try and really beautiful.
Well you learn a new thing each day many thanks 👍
They made these in a cabinet shop I worked in many years ago. We didn't make these in my section but as I recall, they glued the cloth to a properly dimensioned board and used a V bit in a router to cut the strips. The cloth was thick (canvas I think) just in case they went too deep but they left just a 100th of an inch of wood and broke it apart when done. It worked like a charm. The company bought brown plastic guides for the tracks. This was an assembly line. No time to make guides.
I hope if John ever moves whoever buys the house appreciates the craftsmanship in that kitchen...
No plans to move anytime soon :)
They'll paint everything white.
You never disappoint. Another excellent video.
Excellent, thank you for sharing.
I loved the idea and the finish. Great job John.
What does the top track look like? It's not shown in the video. Amazing work though! I never realized how these doors worked before watching this video.
Another amazing video ..I love watch u make stuff .it teaches me so much ..
Thx
Thumbs up
wow - I learned a LOT for such a short video. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you!
Amazing work John, love the idea, you are brilliant, thank you 😀
I like the changes made to your channel. Also what a great project to hide those bulky appliances.
Great job John
Nice work John. Looks fantastic.
Thanks for the great video John. You are an amazing guy! 👍😊
I like this very much. I don't think I could resist cutting the tile to add a border or a contrasting interior.
Great video. As always. I love the project and love the editing and filming. The outro music is also awesome. I like that little feature. Thank you for making this.
Brilliant Job John, will definitely look out for this one on your makers mob
Nice work John.
Obrigado !
Faz tempo que estou procurando um vídeo assim !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Good Job it was voice over John. I'm sure we would of heard a little frustration wile trying to fit it in the slots. LOL. I do love Spalted wood. It looks great
wow....... that looks so beautiful.
Beautiful work.
So many ways to make tambours but try inserting a dowel in the ends of the tambour instead of machining a shoulder. Works a treat !
Very nice, if you can take video on the inside when sliding, which way it can work very smoothly, without being stuck.
I don't know why but I really like the outro-theme music you used... Of course the video content is also excellent.
Amazing! How did you make the tracks and where would you start rounding out that corner for a good pivot angle? Thanks :)
Looks great, John!! I would like to hear the original audio while you struggled putting this thing in the top runners XD
Ah, there is a video of John running PEX pipe in the basement that should give you what you want.
Acts 13:41 This video is probably on his “I built it home” channel, right?
@@floriank9435 I would have thought so, but I can't seem to find it. He may have taken it down. It was a few years back.
Great job John. 👍🏼
Thats freaking lit fam!
STUNNING! ❤️
I like it very much, a successful tambour door
Nice, looks really good.
nice build
What a brilliant idea thank you
Great video as usual.
That is my next project!!
Nice job! Good materials sections! 👍🏻
Awesome as usual!
To prevent hang up, round the upper and lower corners on the end of each slat so they glide easier, light sanding should to the job.
Picture it like a subtle type of Tambor made from popsicle sticks. Just not as pronounced.
Another way to connect them would be to drill a 1/8" hole about 1/4" from each end (so they stay concealed) and threading them. At the end that is never seen, run your thread through a small spring, and "T" the thread off with a slight compression on the spring. This allows for each tenon to "gap" enough to make the curve, but keeps tension on the set to keep them touching throughout the opening and closing of the door.
Wish you'd have showed how it rides in the track. Does it roll up or just go up to the top like a typical garage door?
Very nice 💚
lovley job
Very nice John
32 views and already a thumb down... Wow, the trolls really have it in for you! Love the spalted Maple.
Thanks Art :)
Oh, somebody might have just hit a wrong button on his smartphone. I have woken up from a nap to find myself subscribed to a cosmetic tutorial channel.
I think the reason for a lot of thumb downs is people getting videos recommended to them and going "what is this? I'm not interested in woodworking" and thumbing it down to tune the recommendations
Peter Collin and your wife believed that...?
@@petercollin5670 Some youtube staffer took control over your web cam and thought you were ugly? :D
Don't get mad until you see the stuff I get recommendations for hahaha!
Love it John, turned out great! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Great use of spalted maple!
Nice...and I like your countertop.
That’s is awesome! Thanks for the info on how to
great project love it
Another great video!
Great video as usual John👍
Glad you enjoyed it
thanks you for showing how to make the door but what is the 'mechanism/wood layout that it sits in to be able to roll? You showed how you fitted it but not what it was fitted to/sitting in, ? Short comment would be appreciated.
It looks awesome 😍
Hope it was as satisfying to complete as it was to watch!
Well done
I've been putting off making one of these for ages, I have a unit in the kitchen that would be perfect, but I'm the sort of person that hates 'fine tuning' things to fit! 😂
animationcreations42 lol I hear ya on that fine tuning. I'm a "close enough" kind of guy
I do not normally like clear coat and I am not keen on appliance garages but yours looks really good John.
Thanks Peggy :)
Very impressive!
Excellent!
Nice tour shirt, John!
thanks for sharing that , well said
I really like the look of that.
The pattern on the door is exquisite! Does the door ever slide back down? I'm thinking a few small magnets placed strategically might help if so 🤔
This shows the door, what about the main parts of this contaption?
Did you wax the mating surfaces? I find that makes it glide much easier.
Dang John! That's awesome! I never knew they used fabric on the back of those.
Great one!
Neat! I thought there would be some fancy Joinery between each Slat to interlock them somehow....A Cloth it is :D
Looks great!
Thanks!
I’ve been making custom kitchens for 20 years now and I haven’t had an order with a tambour door in about 15. Used to be in style but not anymore.
things go in and out of style and if people don't know that an option like this is available, they'll never ask for it, this custom kitchen set up is mint and it tackles an issue with a corner space under the wall cabinets that never gets use optimally - it's a good way to handle clutter and if nothing else, a good place to store bags of bread, bagles, etc that would normally just live on the counter top if there is no space in the pantry or if a kitchen doesn't have a pantry.
Very nice mate.
Very nice!
Awesome stuff! I do love me some spalted maple...
Thanks Mark :)
I have a bread garage with one of these doors. Any ideas why the door won't stay closed (lowered)? We pull the door down, and it will creep all the way open every time.
