Both of mine are gone too, I left Poland when I was 25 to see my Dad in America (didn't see him 8 years) but had to stay with him. It was communism in Poland and I was questioned by the secret police before I left. I stayed in America but couldn't go back, it's a long story. Didn't see my Mom 15 years and right after she died, the system changed but it was too late. My Dad died in 2006. I miss them both so much
My father was a goy, but my Yiddishe mama worked hard, worked tirelessly, for decades to make me a mensch, and I think she succeeded for the most part. It is not easy being a Yiddishe mama nor is it often easy having one, but yes it is a blessing.
my mamma's favourtie song and she sang it with so much passion..she lost her battle with cancer 2 week's ago today..and a battle she fought so proudly and with dignity .and never complained once ,,love you my beautiful mammy never forget you ..sleep soundly love you never forget you love catherine xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This is a beautiful song, always makes me cry. I wish I could kiss my mother one more time, but she is gone forever. It hurts and always will. But my love for my mother will never die.
Neil is, as anyone who has worked with him can tell you, a very grounded and thoughtful man. His voice seems not to have aged a bit and at this point I think he is the most handsome he has ever looked. This is a beautiful performance and it reminds me we should acknowledge the lady who made this song famous both in the United States and across the nation, Miss Sophie Tucker. And the definitive recording, as pointed out already here, of Jan Peerce and the wonderful recording by Connie Francis.
How I cry with this song. Mom I miss you every day. I need you. Please come and visit me in my dreams. The lyrics of this song are everything I feel for you.
Zo mooi !! Doet me denken aan mijn ouders in mijn woonplaats woonden vroeger veel mensen van Joodse afkomst Jiddisch werd veel gesproken onder de ouderen in ons Samenleving.
Every year on her birthday and death anniversary and every other day, I listen to this and cry so much. This song cleans my soul. How I miss you, my Yiddishe mame.
I, too, love his performance of this very moving tribute to our mothers. I'm guessing that your family came from Poland or South Russia like Sedaka's mother. Likely he learned her Yiddish pronunciation. (His father was Sephardic). Those dialects pronounce the komets vowel as u (as is pull or dune), so they say the lyrics "ven di mame iz du" or "oylem habu," whereas the Lithuanian dialect has it as o as in shore. In 1925, what is now called YIVO (then Yiddish Scientific Institute) was founded to preserve and study our culture. They standardized orthography, pronunciation, etc., of Yiddish, deciding the Lithuanian pronunciation was "correct" though other dialects won out on some rules of grammar. YIVO still "serves as the de facto recognized language regulator of the Yiddish language" (Wikipedia has a very good article on YIVO). Sadly, so many of the Jews of those regions were murdered or forced to move by the Nazis &/or Communists, that the dialects now represent where our ancestors came from, not living communities. So I enjoy Sedaka's pronunciation except where it deviates from my family's Lithuanian/YIVO Yiddish. And I'll wish you "zay gezunt" but you'll probably wish me "za gezint."
WOW!! I've known this song since I was very young (thanks to my mom's Connie Francis record) but I had never heard this one till now. I've always loved Neil Sedaka and think this even makes me like him more. I agree alexvlk, what a voice!! The man is awesome!!
Yelena, My people came here in 1904 from Cherkassy after the pogroms. I know how you feel, How could anyone who is a landsman not feel the deep connection to both our mothers and our shared experience as Jews.
This is indeed a lovely and soulful rendition of this emotional tribute to all the wonderful mothers. Now 81, Sedaka is still going strong and a month ago posted on RUclips a medley of his hits "to help raise the spirits" of people during this virus lockdown. But if you love this song, you'll melt watching video (it's on YT) of the great cantor Yossele Rosenblatt (1882-1933). They filmed him singing this live, 90-95 years ago with remarkably good sound quality. Or go for the first #1 hit version in 1925 or so, by Sophie Tucker, also Belle Baker.
my cute little mommy, more adorable than annette funicello herself, is the most irreplaceable person i will ever know. it has been eighteen years since she tragically died, yet i continue to not only miss her every single day of my life, but even dream about her almost every night as well

Feel bad that I can't appreciate this song as much as it appears I should. Just not my bag. I've heard that this song has brought tears to Neil when he sings it. His Mom passed in 2006.
On this day in 1963 {January 27th} Neil Sedaka appeared on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... He performed a medley of three songs; "Happy Birthday Sweet 16" {#6 in 1962} "Calendar Girl" {#4 in 1961} and "My Yiddish Mama" {didn't make the Top 100}... "Happy Birthday Sweet 16" reached #3 in U.K.; while "Calendar Girl" reached #1 on the Japanese 'Utamatic Song' chart and #8 in the U.K. R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974} and Mr. Sedaka turns 74 years old this coming March 13th...
Thanks for the fun facts. Neil is now 81. A month ago he posted a medley of several of his hits on RUclips. You'll love it. He still sounds good; just looks a bit older. He's one of several artists of the late 50's and 60's who've been cheering us up during this virus lockdown. God bless them all and you, too.

We lived in Lithuania and my mother used to take me to Jewish theater. She used to teach me ethics, manners and she was very cultural. THANK YOU MAMA
not Jewish but I have ears and a heart that hears this song sweetly.
This song makes me cry and I am 85 years old.
Hello Barbara how are you doing today
My grandfather used to sing this. It will be 6 years in October since he passed away. He was 92 for only 4 days.
My father was a goy, but my Yiddishe mama worked hard, worked tirelessly, for decades to make me a mensch, and I think she succeeded for the most part. It is not easy being a Yiddishe mama nor is it often easy having one, but yes it is a blessing.

I played this for my dear mom on 18 March for her death anniversary. What tears. I'm sure she adored it and the Yiddish! !!
Every 18 March I play this for my darling Yiddishe mame. I have a candle lit and I play this.
I've heard this song all my life, but when Neil began singing in Yiddish I fell apart. Azoy sheine!
I miss my Yiddishe Mama everyday in my heart!
I'm not even Jewish but this song makes me cry. It's to all the wonderful, self sacrificing mothers all over the world.
