I’m currently a special provisions employee and have been working for about 15 years now and not eligible to retire yet. If I am approved for disability retirement, will those years count as 1.7% or 1%?

Great question! If you are approved for Federal Disability Retirement any special provisions years you have will be counted at 1.7% up to your first 20 years. After those 20 years at 1.7% any additional years will be calculated at 1%. Remember, while on Federal Disability Retirement you gain creditable years of service until age 62, so this benefit can significantly increase your years of service and your regular retirement pension.
