- What's up my Beardos and Weirdos!
Today we're diving back into r/AccidentalAlly, which is a fantastic subreddit where people try to be terrible but accidentally circle back to being supportive once more! We're also doing this fun thing where during pride month we go through a bunch of the subreddits that have historically been demonetized on this channel and cover them again, because to heck with demonetization! Haha. I just hope you all have as much fun with these as I do.
Do one thing for yourself today that makes you happy. Much love. 💜

Happy pride 🌈
Please look after one another, look out for each other, and take care of those who need it. This is an amazing time for celebrations, but it can also be a really tricky time for some, and having friends check in can mean the entire difference for some.
Take care, all of you. 💜
Thank you for everything you've done.

I find it funny when somebody says to a trans person, “You’re trans? You don’t look like *the opposite gender*.”
That’s the whole point. Trans people are trying to pass as the gender that they identify as, not the gender that they were assigned at birth.
Yeah but it's typically obvious that they're trying. If someone can make it hard to tell that that was their birth gender, that's a commendable feat.
Lol if transphobes think your transitioning the opposite way it means youve succeeded
Not all trans ppl want to do cispassing cuz cispassing can be transphobic in itself. Why pretend to be cisgender when u will never be? You will always be trans and u should be proud of it. This comes from a trans person.

Okay but also if someone is complaining and you’re they/them just say you are plural, like a swarm of bees
My favourite tactic for dealing with people who think "they" is only plural is to immediately address them as "thou." Sadly I don't get to use that much.

Hi OT. English teacher and language student here. The rules of proper grammar are 1) descriptive not prescriptive and 2) based in the language used by the powerful classes. "Proper grammar" when used in the way you were with "by or on accident" is often used to gatekeep people from poorer classes who don't have access to the same quality education from the halls of power or academia. So to answer you, both are correct in common usage and ill defend that forever.
Love you though. Keep up the good work!
Absolutely in agreement, and often a point of conversation between myself, Click, and Salty. I love learning the dialectal and regional differences between us, and we often discuss how much of that is effected by upbringing/schooling vs media consumption. I could have phrased it differently but I think I’m comfortable in the way I spoke as long as folks don’t think it comes from a place of hate or ignorance but in the same way I approach most things, which is a gentle teasing. I’ve talked about this before on the podcast but working different jobs has shown me how many Style Guides are out there when I was a professional business word person, and I hope to never be the red-underline-to-dock-and-mock person that many of my teachers were.
Thank you for commenting, and providing your perspective. I appreciate you for being in the community and keeping me in check. 💜
Shoot. I’d like to leave your comment pinned on this video but I’ve also made a comment regarding pride that I’d like to leave pinned. I hope you understand. 💜
@@OneTopic exactly. I wasn't trying to be harshly critical. In discussing this with them, I tell my students that I am not trying to invalidate how they communicate at home or in their communities. I'm handing them a set of tools that they can use to get ahead in a world that unfortunately does use grammar to gatekeep people. And the thing about a tool is you can set it down and it'll be right there when you need it. And when you don't you can set it aside again.
@@OneTopic prides more important OT (he says wearing a bi pride shirt).
"The rules of proper grammar are 1) descriptive not prescriptive" That's not even two mutually exclusive alternatives. It's OK to say what people *do* do(even if they shouldn't), and it's also OK to say what people *should* do (even if they sometimes don't do that). Your remark about gatekeeping was not relevant - nobody was gatekeeping anybody.
Now OT reported his observation that some people say a particular correct phrase and some people say a particular wrong one, and that description elicits an insult from you. How come OT's description deserves punishment but you're allowed to make a personal insult? That shows double standards.

The whole "Trans men are men and Trans women are women" thing just reminds me of the first time I learned the word "Trans".
When I was younger, my dad introduced me to his friend, he said that she is a Trans Woman. At that point in time, she hadn't transitioned yet and for me, she looked like a guy. Later, I searched what being Trans meant, the answer I got was "is when you are born with one gender but identify with another". So... I kind of got everything confused. What I understood is that my father's friend was afab but wanted to be male.
And I kept calling her by he/his pronouns thinking I was being supportive and nice. THEN, then one year later I learned what being a Trans Woman really meant.
I still feel really bad I misgendered her all this time. I don't talk to her anymore, next time I see her I'm gonna apologize.

@@Kirferyan They are God’s chosen ones lol
What about "I'm a gobby goober" (I don't know how to spell it) I've heard of that one a bit. :>
I mean God IS genderless. Most people DO perceive Him as a male since we call Him Father but God (in my opinion) is both a male and a female and neither all at the same time. He has the protectiveness and supportiveness of a father and the gentle ways and caringness of a mother. That's just the way I see it, so God is non binary ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ doesn't really make sense that I see Him as nonbinary and yet use He and Father but the concept of God is something we don't know the specifics of and so what may seem impossible and weird to us may actually be very possible and normal for....God? Heaven? Idk. All I know is that God created everyone with love and He makes no mistakes. God made nonbinary people nonbinary, same as all the people LGBT+ or not. Love thy neighbor, no matter what. Christians who do not support the LGBT community and/or are xenophobic and islamophobic just aren't christians....that is NOT what Jesus taught us and while I understand that no one is without sin (myself included) that doesn't mean we can use that to excuse our shitty behavior. TL:DR God loves the LGBT community since God loves us all equally ♥️💘💛💚💙💜 💖💜💙

Reminds me about that guy who finally understood his daughter. I don't know what the story was called, but it was a really nice one about him trying to not have the transphobic laws placed in his state
Heck, even if the person is the child’s biological parent, the semen doesn’t define the child.
In two ways. First, who the child is goes beyond their genetic makeup.
But second, and most important to counter the point that guy was making, the sperm (not the semen, because semen is the liquid) only provides half of the dna in the child. The other half, as well as all the mitochondrial dna, os provided by the ovum. So even in the biological sense it doesn’t define the child.
A lot of people seem to think "Trans men" refers to a man transitioning to female, and "trans woman" referring to a woman becoming a man. The fact they get this tiny detail wrong reveals how little they know of this subject. If you see someone make this mistake, try to not take them too seriously trans peeps. You are loved regardless of the volume of the bigots
This is so sad they can’t do math🥲
You know what, I was about to ask what was wrong with your comment and I did a double take and realised I was reading it wrong - I fully agree with you :)
I'm embarrassed to admit it but I didn't know the difference either. When I first researched being trans I came upon the word transwoman and I was so disappointed thinking that label would be applied to me. Then I read the definitions and got all happy that my label was actually transman.
Actually this makes me believe that those people getting it wrong are just lazy slobs that can't be bothered to do a quick Google search.😂
Sadly, it comes from them seeing gender as fixed at birth, so "trans man" is born a man and then "chooses" (in their misunderstanding) to transition to a woman. In their rigid understanding of concepts, the "man" part of someone can never change.
I once had someone tell me I'd never be a real girl because I am a pre transition trans boy so I still look a bit like a girl... I was so happy

What have we learned today?
Adoption doesn't exist to a large amount of transphobes... I guess?
More like... adoptive children aren't your ''real'' children because obviously BLOOD/giving birth is the only thing that counts in having children.
Like, you give birth and you are God, your children will love you forever, it's not like... you have to actually raise, care or love them or anything
@@berserker3414 That might be closer to it. I was listening to a debate between Dylan Burns and a homophobe trying to convince him to not be gay. The homophobe's last point was that if you're gay you'd have to adopt, and adopted kids overall suck compared to biological kids - so really, why bother being gay?
It was really jarring as I had never heard someone be so anti-adoption because it would be the KIDS hurting the parents before.
@@EmotionsNeverLie God I hate that mindset. Like 3 of my siblings are adopted, one of my sisters and myself are biological, and my other sister is my old foster sister. My best relationship is with my old foster sister, my worst is with my biological sister, and my parents love us all pretty equally. Blood means literally nothing.
Also, like, if that is something you really care about surrogates and egg/sperm donors exist. You can have a kid with your genetics regardless of your sexuality or even whether or not you're in a relationship.
And this mindset also just invalidates having a relationship with someone who can't have kids. Or relationships where people just don't want kids. Like why does this matter to you, random person who has nothing to do with someone else's relationship?
@@PunkZombie1300 Not only that, but what happens to all of the orphaned children if no one adopts? Not to mention that they are probably the same who say adoption is a better option to abortion. I actually saw one person saying adoption was human trafficking! Whaaaa?

Yes! This is a very important distinction.
Communications Major here:
Technically, "by accident" is correct, and "on accident" is not. An easy way to remember is, if you switch out "accident" for "mistake" it sounds really weird to say "on mistake," instead of "by mistake."
Realistically though, the laws of grammar exist to facilitate communication by removing ambiguity.
If there's no ambiguity, then it doesn't impede communication. When you say "on accident," even though it's technically not correct, there is no other realistic interpretation. It couldn't mean anything besides "by accident," so it doesn't affect the transfer of ideas.
Therefore, it doesn't really matter. "by" is proper, but you understand what is being said either way, so it's not worth throwing a fit about.
that's sort of the weird thing, they're both correct in everything but formal writing.
I was thinking about where I even got that phrase ( on accident) and for a moment thought that it was a mistranslation that I did in my mind when from spanish (my native language) to english, but turns out the only translation you can get from spanish to english is "by accident", so I mut have read it somewhere end adopted it. Even though it didn't make sense to me if I'm following the normal translation, using the "official" english grammar rules or it didn't make sense for my language instinct in spanish, it certainly did the latter, but for my english language intuition and I think that that just adds onto this point. Even if it doesn't follow the grammar rules, it still makes sense and it is easy to comprehend and can't be mistaken by anything else. That's just another of the wonders of the english language, I guess. I've been told [name]'s isn't right and I'm very dumb
I never had gym classes separated by gender and I seriously don't understand why some schools (countries?) feel a need to do that. We had very athletic and very unathletic people in class, no matter their gender OR shape. I know a lot of unathletic thin people and very athletic people that are bigger/ wider or however you want to call it. 😅 Gender, shape, height etc don't really matter when it comes to ability concerning sports. Not to mention that there is a huge amount of different sports out there where different abilities are more or less important.
Sorry for the mini-rant... 😅
I also didn't have classes separated by genders, however,
It's a bit unrelated, but I have to say it pisses me off how different evaluation grid in gym class are between boys and girls, when it comes to things like running a certain distance for example. Obviously it should be a little different, but in my school, it's ridiculousely extreme. My sister and I are both in excellent shape, and while she's better than me in cross country ski(proportionnally, I mean, she's still 3 years younger), I'm better than her at running. That was not reflected in our grades. While she once got almost a minute ahead of the required time for girls to get 100%, I was barely getting 95%. This is plain unfair, obviously, and it's insulting towards girls who are in shape and humiliating for boys who aren't.
Same goes for the scouts in my country I never understood what was Americas obsession with gendered everything
I go to an all boys school so I also have not experienced segregated PE classes
We separated one week and the girls did pilaties while the boys did something else. We probably could have asked togo with the other group, but no one did.
We had to split up and the "girls" (I say that cos 3 of them have since come out as trans) had to do hockey, and the "boys" had to do rugby and (I'm a girl btw) I preferred rugby but I couldn't do it

Plus language should always evolve which is a problem with French and other languages that don't have gender neutral pronouns. It progress more slowly. We do have non-official neopronouns. We also have yel and yol. So yeah. But there is no way to find the right conjugation in French because of the stupid French rules.

Funny enough, me, my enby friend, and my English teacher had a whole conversation of us agreeing that they/them pronouns are grammatically correct and 100% valid. 2:29 both of those phrases are so common place in the modern vernacular that regardless as to wether one is historically correct or not, I think they’re both correct now, as English has evolved to accept both.
"On accident" is probably a regional dialect or modern slang thing. It might not be standard English, but it's not just plain wrong like you think.
Yes saying any type of speech is only wrong is prescriptivism as opposed to descriptivism that says the only wrong way to speak would be if the other person doesn’t understand you.
At least how I've always understood it is that it really depends on the context for whether or not it makes sense. Though, it's not inherently wrong

Yes. I'd love that. It'd be so much more fair then
Yeah, I mean a short man might very well be in a disadvantage against a tall woman is certain sports, for example. It would probably make sense to create categories based on weight, height, muscle volume or even VO2 max if you want to get fancy.
My old school used to do that but now the groups are more mixed there! :D
When I did TKD the competitions were usually separated by gender but within gender there's also age, rank, weight and height consideration. Except once the numbers of competitors didn't line up so they just mixed us up, it was actually fun and there was no unfair treatment

Am I the only one who just says 'em(them) to someone who clearly looks like a certain gender but they haven't confirmed their gender so continue saying them until they truely confirm their gender identity?
Same. Once I started actually thinking about LGBTQIA+ things and, y'know, _the gender_ and _the sexuality_ I started calling others "them" unless they have specifically done either a. told me their pronouns.
I am VERY good at math by the way. very incredibly ahah good
Nope, I’ve started doing that too.
This is the most logical interpretation of the idea, yes.
God is sexless, yes. A divine being has no need for sexual dimorphism or reproductive organs. However, if god feels like being a certain gender, who are we to judge. Just don't force one on... Uh... God
Further support: the Abrahamic religions have a significant focus on worshiping exactly one god; that is, the one with the capital G. This would imply that they are a species unto themself, and with a species of one, sexual *di* morphism is impossible.
OT: "On accident", or "by accident"? Which is correct?
Me: "Accidently."
Also, happy pride from your friendly local trigender demi-pan dragon. ^^
Random Fact about the grammar thingy - both are technically correct as one will find out pretty quickly by looking it up, though on accident is seen as mistake by many, which isn't all wrong, as there are few cases you can use on accident correctly in written form. In formal written language you will probably never find on accident tbh, but just because it is rarely right, doesn't make it completely wrong.
@@NiflhelRook I'm thinking of the construction "on purpose." It seems to me they should match.

My teacher came up to me and said sometime along the lines of "I'm sorry sweetie, but you'll have to be put in the boys group." Today I still use she/he/they. My teacher had no idea how happy it made me to be put with the boys.
So, about that whole knowing what transmen and transwomen refer to: I was not sure until a few months ago when I started getting more curious about the lgbtq community. What I'm saying here is that I'm not very surprised that someone who only hangs in rightwing circles legitimally doesn't know which is which. It's a bit pathetic, yes, but I presume that this actually describes the majority of transphobes(or transsceptic, whatever they call themselves these days).
It's always so weird when people talk about "facts" like they know and researched it all but then they can't even get the terms they're talking about right...
I mean, if you take longer than a few seconds to think about it, the terms are actually very obvious.
It's like taking a piece of black plastic and painting it blue. It's "painted blue", but according to the logic of a transphobe, it's "painted black". While the true meaning is "A turned into B", they see it as "B trying to turn into A".
It stems from an unwillingness from the transphobes to look further than a split-second glimpse.
Oh, I thought that last one was transseptic like the tank of a toilet. Can we use that for transphobes from now on?
r/ConfidentiallyIncorrect
@@tracyblanchard7663 I'm pretty sure I just made up the term transsceptic. It's just that remplacing a word that ends in -phobe or -ist with a word that doesn't is a common tactic used by the right to appear more friendly and less threatening.

Hello! Linguist here. I hate to break it to you OT, but "on accident" and "by accident" are both correct. Language wise, if you understand it, it is correct language; the goal of language is to convey ideas, and if the people you are talking to understand what you said, then the language was successful and accurate. These types of deviations like "on accident" vs "by accident" get created when two groups aren't in direct contact with each other and their language naturally differentiates overtime. Typically, the English we consider "correct" that is taught in classrooms is just the language of the upper class. Whenever one language variety is determined to be better than another variety, it is typically because there is some type of power imbalance at play, and whoever has the most power is the one who decides what is "correct". In this way, language varieties/dialects/accents that are used by racial minorities and lower socioeconomic classes are often looked at as "slang", "inarticulate", or "wrong" when their language is just as valid as other forms, and in some cases they can be more complex and expressive than the standard.
Loving that the editor’s note talking about how OT is (entirely correctly) correcting those who say “on accident”...
...is spelt pednantic instead of pedantic
