- Hi everyone! In this video I work on another art journal spread using Dylusions paint and iso alcohol. This is a really great way to create texture and layers with acrylics.
For those of you who watch my previous videos, I did not get out of the clinical trial in time to record another watercolor video but I hope you enjoy watching this art journal spread. It was so much fun to do!

So colorful and creative!
This is amazing! I had no idea those paints reacted so well with the alcohol!!
Thanks. It’s super fun to explore with different things to get different effects!
This is freaking amazeballs!
Haha thank you so much 😊
Excellent and i like ur black and white very bold love it especially the black great process
Thanks! It’s super fun to do this technique 😉
Love love love!!!
Thanks so much
love the background. thanks for sharing
so so beautiful awesome job.
Thank you!
I just got 10 Dina Wakley acrylic paints today and still have the bottle of alcohol on my craft desk from when I was playing with Tim Holtz’ alcohol inks yesterday ... I think it’s a sign to try this technique!
Fun! Are the Dina Wakely paints fluid or heavy? I don’t know if she came out with fluid ones yet but hers are usually heavy. If so try making them fluid first with medium (preferable) or water. This technician works better with them fluid. But it may give you a different less transparent look so it still may be cool lol. Have fun exploring!!
TheHomegrownArtist She has a regular acrylic paint, a heavy body paint and now her acrylic gloss sprays! I have the regular paints and got the spray in white, to see what what it would be like when mixed in with Tim’s and Dyan’s sprays.
Oh cool! I’ve actually never used any of her products 😳. Hope you have fun!!
Sealing the in between layers gives a much more dramatic and visible effect. Completely awesome!!!
I've never tried the binding idea before. Thanks!
Love it!
What a wonderful tutorial! Thanks so much
+Jazzy JEC thank you for watching!
Fabulous! Loved this!
+Mary Marcum thank you!
Looove it!!! Thanks for sharing!
I have 3 cats, and they love sharing the art table with me. One of them loves to make off with my brushes! Cool and lovely page. This alcohol technique is one of my favorites!
Ty! Glad you enjoyed. I finally got a room where not pets are allowed lol
I really really love this! I call it an all you can eat eye buffet. So much to take in and enjoy. Thank you for sharing your talents. Much appreciated. I'm off to try a version of this myself. Hagd!
Thanks l! I’m glad you like it. Have fun creating your own!!
Great technique
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your wonderful art techniques!
+Joann Alexander your welcome!
I just found you too!~ Love the way you talk through the process! And what results!!!!Thank you for sharing and I hope to see more of your videos.....Very inspiring!
+Michelle Bourque thank you so much!
Wow I’m loving this iso alcohol technique, I have some and I’m def gunna try it. Beautiful art work. Can you tell me will this work with any acrylic paint, I’m guessing so but I just thought I’d ask, TIA 🙂👍
Yes any acrylic paint. Works best with fluid acrylics though.
TheHomegrownArtist ok great thank you, I’ll take note of that. 🙂
I love your layering and your use of alcohol! It's such a good idea for those who don't draw.
This was super fun to watch! You got so many neat visual effects here! Loved the end result too!
Thank you so much!
That was mind-blowing!
Love it 😊
Thanks so much@
Just bought my first dylusion paints. Hope they come out as colourful and beautiful as yours. If i dont use the white barrier between colors will it change the effect?
You mean the transparent gel medium barrier? Yes the effect will change a bit. Hope you enjoy the Dylusions paints and have fun!
You mean the transparent gel medium barrier? Yes the effect will change a bit because there won’t be anything to keep the colors separate. Hope you enjoy the Dylusions paints and have fun!
Beautiful page. Love the alcohol effect you did. Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. 😊💕
I absolutely LOVE it. Love the look you got using alcohol. I love stencils. It looks so good!!!! Thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. 😁❤
Thank you for watching 😊. Glad you enjoyed the process!!
It's Beautiful do you paint a picture on it after. You do a background like that or do you just admirer it ? I love the way it looks .
I am new at this I hope that wasn't a dumb question. I see Jane Davenport painting backgrounds and think all of them have to have faces or something on their I need to learn more but words are enough .
Oh you can add anything to it. My favorite method is transferring pictures on there with gel medium. But you could do anything. Use your artistic license! Draw flowers, faces, do negative painting where your subject is the color and the neg space is something completely different, stamp on it, etc
TheHomegrownArtist Thank you for replying to me . I am in art therapy and learning how to do this is helping me heal. Blessings to you.
Could you use clear gesso between the layers?
You can try bit i think bc clear gesso has a pourous surface the effect will be different. I dont know if the alcohol will spread the acrylic the same. But of course always try everhthing!
Would mod podge matte waterbase sealer work? I am trying to think of what I already have.
Great process...👍🏻😘
I just found you late last night and this is the second video I have watched. I love your techniques. They are so much like what I would try. I’ve also just subscribed. Thank you for sharing.
+Karen Brown thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoy!
Awesome 👍☺
+1radruth thank you :)
I love the alcohol technique! I can’t believe I didn’t know about that! Personally I would have left it alone because it looked like a beautiful field of flowers..abstract of course. Also, it looked like something quite expensive that someone would buy! However, I like the finished page, too! I love your skills and your talent❤️💜
Thank you. Yea it's a beautiful effect on its own
Love it
Will the alcohol react that way with other paints?
Other fluid paints, yes.
Instead of painting the edges of my pages black, I typically use black distress ink and and if needed (which is rare) lightly seal it or spray seal it. I have a question about your gesso brush. Is it a plastic bristled brush? Can you send me a link for it? I can not find a brush, card...anything I like to apply gesso. What brand of gesso are you using? I have Liquitex gesso in white and clear, but the white is way too thick for my taste. The clear is perfect, but I need a thinner white. I can tell yours is thinner. I hope you see this and respond. Thank you! P.S. I hope you know how skilled and talented you are. Thanks for sharing with us :)
Awe thanks so much. I tend to do distress ink when I use inks and acrylic if I use paint. I mix it up sometimes.
As for the gesso it was a thinner version, it was Faber castell. The brush is just a Simmons 1 inch flat.
TheHomegrownArtist I meant the Distress ink pads ;)
I just water down thicker gesso when I want a smoother effect. Works for me.
WOW that is awesome can’t wait to try it out I’m not. A doodler
But even without the doodling it looks so gorgeous thank you for sharing.
Fun! Enjoyed watching you! I am here from hearing about you from Tiff over at SouthernGalDesigns!
Yay thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy my channel!
OMG😍 I love your videos ...I actually followed along to this one ...well I got as far as the paint & alcohol lol but WOW you helped me learn a new Technique I'm soo chuffed and amazed with myself lol...OBVIOUSLY your Art work is sooo much better & popping I only have 6 colours of the dylusion paints but dont have have the colours you used so I used Custard mushy peas & peony blush lol...& iv only got the 70% isopropyl but still worked great all tho I think I used to much paint on mine ha ha coz my under colours did not come thru like yours BUT it's a lesson learnt n I'm learning as I go along....I'm wondering if maybe my gel matte is working iv got the liqiutex gel matte n I mixed bit with water like you did...I do get confused with witch medium is wot & used for lol I'm still a learner wer mixed media stuff is concerned but I had so much fun trying out this technique & you can be sure I'm gonna do it again 😁....lol...Thank you thank you so very much for sharing your videos I loves them n love learning 😁. X
Your welcome!! I’m so happy you are learning and that you like the video. Liquitex matte medium is very similar to the soft matte medium I was using, the only difference is it’s a bit thicker so harder to water down. I don’t think that the alcohol % is that big of a difference, it may be that you just need to make bigger puddles of it as you build your layers so that it gives space for the under colors to show through. You may just want to experiment with it, which is the fun part! 😊 I bet the colors you used looked cool like cotton candy or something lol. I don’t have those colors yet, they are on my wish list lol
I just found you and had to subscribe! I watch a lot of you tube videos on mixed media art and yours is one of the best I've seen. I really like the way you explain what you're doing along the way and share your creative process.
Awe that makes my ♥️ happy! Thanks so much 🙏
What is alternative for craft mat?
😬 I have no idea.. silicon mat I think. Sorry 😐
Loved the background with the alcohol effects!!! I've tried the acrylics paint/alcohol technique before with no success. Will try to separate the colors with gel medium next time. Thanks!
No problem. It’s a fun wat to play with your acrylics for sure. And you can get anything from marbling effects to bubble like effects depending on how you do it. I hope you enjoy experimenting!
This is amazing! I love the alcohol effect. Pretty all alone! Thank you for sharing your creativity. So inspiring.
Thank you!
very nice! enjoy your process. thanks for the inspiration :-)
+Debbie Hight thank you!
FABULOUS! Loved everything about this video. Your voice over explaining your process was great! Thank you for sharing.
what was the barrier you applied between the layers of dylusions?
It was Prima’s soft gel medium mixed with a bit of water. So glad you liked it!!
Very cool!
Just stumbled across your channel and have subscribed. What a wonder spread! I love it! Tfs. Hugs from the UK,Dee xox
This is awesome, had no idea this was even possible :) Thank you for taking the time to share this with all of us! Best, Jamie
I literally just packed up my Dylusions pots to give away bc I haven't used them in a year - and Bam⚡ this vid shows up in my feed. Doo doo doo doo 🧙 Really fun idea, thanks. Will check out your other vids now 😊
Could you use mod podge or gel medium instead of gesso? Would it still work? Btw..you’re from Alabama. I’m from Mississippi. We’re state neighbors :) I live in the Jackson metro area. Ever in Mississippi let’s get together and make some art!
P.S. Is there a way I can email you? I used this technique in a different way.
Yes you could use that but the paint may act a lil differently. I used to live in Greenville ms and before that Jackson. My email is thehomegrownartist@gmail.com
Unfortunately all of my paints dried and some we not even opened.
Oh no that is awful. If you email ranger and show them pictures I would hope they would send you replacements. I’ve only ever had the bubble gum pink dry out before ranger fixed the batch
Love it... why did you have to gesso first? And when you say binder.... you mean gel medium??
+HooWnts2No I gessoed first because dylusions paint dries really fast, especially on her paper and I wanted a non pourous surface for the colors to flow on. And yes it can be gel medium or matte medium or mod podge, any sort of binder. You can skip that step but it comes out a bit different
Ooohh this is fun! Thank you. And just an aside, I think all of us with cats can relate lol. I think every single thing I've made has had cat hair in it somewhere. (Except the food!! Never in the food!! Promise!)
+susan gardens no problem 😁. And yes, cats love messing with art stuff and laying on your art desk lol. I had one of my kittens step in a juicy big of watercolor and jump on my white bedspread! Luckily it came out. And yes never the food lol
Beautiful technique, love the alcohol effect, this turned out beautifully. 😜Cat hair is condiment here.😽
This is fabulous! How did you find out how to do this? Your head doesn't bother me and I love your voice! So excited to have found you!
+ML Lu awe thank you! I just played around with stuff and voila. I've seen people use alcohol on acrylic but not to this degree before. It creates cool layers!
Will matte medium be ok for the layer between the alcohol and paint?
+Mary Marcum yes ma'am!
Can you use the alcohol on any kind of acrylic paint or only on dyleusions?
Any kind 😀
Just found you. Subbed. I have cats like that too. I have paw prints in one of my art journals from when one of them was a kitten and she decided to walk all over the wet gesso. 🤣
+Galina Kariean ha I bet that made cool texture lol
What are dysillusions paints exactly is it just a brand of acrylic
+Raquel Embleton they are but they are fluid, really pigmented and usually on her paper and a lot of others you don't need gesso if your just painting. They come in bright vivid colors, and now a few pastels and are gorgeous!
