- In this video, Chris will be doing an oil change for the upper and lower end of a 2015 25HP Four Stroke Yamaha Outboard. Oil changes are a simple service that is required for your outboard to ensure its longevity. Chris walks us through step by step while explaining the reason we do it the way we do. Don't forget to leave any questions you may have in the comment section down below!
Here at the college quarterdeck, we aim to make videos that are easy to follow and cut out the unnecessary footage that is often found during these types of videos. Hopefully, you find our videos straight to the point and refreshing!

Excellent instruction video, only lacking; starting the engine to fill the oil filter and rechecking oil level. Also, while on the lower end, remove the prop and check for fish line on the prop shaft that can damage the oil seal. Very well done.
Hi need help
Very well done. Nicely informative, tips on potential problems, good camera work to understand the wheres & whys.
Lol 😆 so I've been doing the lower unite change wrong for 30 + years😵 makes soooooo much more sence how you did it. Me huge mess, a real pain, frustrated, reluctan to do it. Bought several gadgets, made some gadgets, just to find out to fill from the bottom, oh well ..... That makes sence, why have I been soooooo blind for three decades??? THANK YOU!!!!!!
I'm glad we are able to show you an easier way! XD
How the hell did you do it??
You are the most educated outboard engine technician so far
Thank y’all again for the oil change videos. Very helpful! Hope to see more from you guys
Thank you! We appreciate the support. :D
Thanks for the video. Very helpful and well done.
Nice!!! Easy to follow and to the point! Good job
Thats the goal! Clean and simple!
Love this. Perfectly explained.
Thank you! We appreciate the support!
Thanks man, I have used these video multiple times.
Glad to hear. Thats our goal! :)
Great video, thank you for keeping it simple but on point!
Thats the goal! Glad we could help ^-^
Very good sir, alot of informatioms to learn.
Happy we could help!
It is a privilege to watch talented young people share the valuable skills they have learned and pass on the knowledge they have. Very cool, and thank you for a great video! Here are two "tips" I recently picked up regarding this particular job. Evaluate them yourself and see if they are worth including in your own skill set. First tip is to prefill the oil filter before you place it on the engine. Inside the oil filter is specially treated filtration paper. When you prefill the oil filter that filtering material soaks up the oil; you can actually pour a surprisingly amount of oil into the filter then install the filter without have any of the oil you put into the filter leak out. The advantage in doing this step is that lubricating oil gets to your engine's critical surfaces faster following the oil change because the oil doesn't have to first fill up the filter, then soak through the filtering material before passing on through the filter to the internal critical surfaces. The second tip is to put some (heavier duty) tape on the skeg below the lower oil drain/fill hanging off the skeg straight down. Then when the oil drains instead of running all the way down the skeg it starts down the skeg and then transitions to the tape and drips off the tape into whatever you are using to collect the old gear case oil. - Respectfully
These are two great points! Thank you for bringing them to our attention, we appreciate it!
If you fill the filter you will lose that oil It mounts sideways
@@martyhonda6983 yes and no. Don’t fill it up. If you put about half full the material will soak it up, knocking the time down to fill up and then coat the inner parts
Thank you sir keep it up
Very good video, thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Excellent video
Thanks!
Great job! 👏🏻
thanks!
Thank you bro from Kuwait
Any time!
Hey guys, this is an awesome video full of great info and done in a "straight forward fashion". I would love it if you guys could do the same instructional on a Yamaha f9.9 four-stroke. It's different enough that I would love to see it done.
We actually have a 1999 4HP Yamaha and a 2012 8HP Yamaha that we will be releasing here in the next few weeks! The 8HP isn't too different than the 9.9HP so keep an eye out for those videos in the next few weeks!
@@thecollegequarterdeck I look forward to it - thank you!
Nice work on a nice motor. fyi oil goes through the funnel easier if you pop out the dipstick so displaced air can escape out from the dipstick tube.
Yes! We love airflow ^-^
Great advice
Thanks!
Helpful thank you.
Happy we could help!
First class tuition 🏴👍👍👍
Thanks! I think :)
Yes! Thank you:)
You're welcome :D
Terrific video! Many thanks. One question. I'm having a real problem identifying which oil filter to use for a 2001 4-stroke 25hp Yamaha outboard. The number in your video is usually changed when I try to order.
It should say which filter you need in the owner manual. Hopefully this may help! Cheers! yamahaoutboards.com/en-us/home/owner-resources/all/owners-manuals
Thanks brother you made that as easy as 123 ,keep it up buddy ✌️
Thank you! Im trying! 🥳
very informative video, wish i had a workshop instead of working on boat engine outside.
Yeah, we're right there with you 😔 Could always try to back it into the garage 😎
At 4:03, good idea also to fill new Oil Filter w/ fresh new Oil, pre-soaks the baffles inside-- easier on the engine on start-up.
Something i didnt know then, great info for the present :) thanks!
5 stars.
Thanks :3
I understood everything in the video and it was very well done but I was under the impression that Yamalube was beer. Beer is a necessary lubrication to get the wrench turner properly asphyxiated to do the job and ignore all outside interference such as wife and dog and small children.
Bruh... 😂😂😂
You need to start engine to fill up oil filter then stop it and recheck oil level
Ahh Yes! I forgot to cut out the oil check part since we didn't start the outboard. Thank you for the reminder! 😊
What do the gaskets on the lower half look like and do they have to be outboard motor specific?
They are small circles that fit around the oil screws. They should be yamaha brand. If you talk to your parts dealer, they will be able to let you know if they need to be motor specific. You can looking up the outboard and find the parts number.
Thank you this really helps me..
We're happy to help! :D
But i thank you guys because I'm from a small county called Samoa.. But luckily we have RUclips.. Is very helpful so now i fix my own..
Does that filter fit a 20hp? I have the 4 stroke 20hp. Also where did you buy it?
So You're going to want to look at the owner's manual because depends on the model and the year will depend on which filter you want to use.
Hold on a second. The oil filter o ring was not on the filter when you took it off. Also always check the lower unit lube holes for the little gasket that likely got stuck. Dont want to be doubling up seals or gaskets. Good for you tho bud, you did good.
I do believe it is there in the video. Very good points with making sure not to double up seals and gaskets, I've seen someone do that before. Not Recommended~! 😅
Great instruction video. Yamaha has a new model of 25HP, The F25LWTC. It is fuel injected; and while the oil filter is in the same location, the fuel filter is not. Also, the pil pan drain plug is in a different location, which right now, I cannot locate.
They tend to move it around, it should tell you in the owners manual :) Hopefully that helps!
I ordered the same lower unit oil you used but it did not come with the pump/ tube for filling from the bottom. Any links to where I could find one?
Great question! We got it from our local parts/outboard dealer here in Newport Beach. You can buy the pump online and should be listed as a "Yamaha Outboard Lower Oil Pump". You want to look for the same pump size for your container. We use this lower gear case oil/pump for different types of outboards so the threads don't always match, so you may want to check your thread size as well. Hope this helps!
Thank you for your time!
@@joshtalbott9528 Of course! Happy to help! :D
Hi College, the Yamaha 9.9 JMH 4 strokes doesnt have a normal oil filter. How can i change the "oil strainer" ? thank you for any help
Normally the oil strainer is left as is since its such a hassle to get to.
But also feel free to reach out to your local distributor/ repair shop and see what they have to say
Does that engine have pull start or no because I’m trying to find one that doesn’t have pull start just one that connects to steering
This outboard and most of our 20-25HP Yamaha do not have pull starts, they all start with a key.
I have 2019 on my pontoon with tilt trim......
I have the same outboard motor but after ever minute it goes off what is the problem
Could be a fuel delivery issue, but its hard to say without more detas
Do you have a link to that oil filter wrench?
Yes, the link in the description of the video should work. If it doesn't, let me know!
Would a 2019 four stroke 25hp Yamaha be the same
Models can change from year to year so you will have to look at your outboard and compare.
Of that MODEL EU you will show in the video the 25hp
.
How much engine oil is in the filling?
As in "How much oil is put into the upper end of the outboard?"
Do Yamaha 8hp have oil filters?
Usually they have oil strainers which are hard to get to and remove so people usually dont swap it. Its similar to the 4HP video we made. :)
Looking to change oil for 15 hp motor
I have the footage, just need to edit it :D
Liked
thanks!
Torque settings would have been very helpful.
Trueeeeee!
So the outboard has to come off the boat ?
No, you can keep it on the boat. We just used this outboard that was on the stand as an example. Of course, you will have to remove it from the water.
hey Maybe you know how to boost Yamaha 15 horsepower to 20hp ?
Grzegorz Gawkowski We are not too familiar with boosting outboards, so we dont have any info to provide on that topic.
Is it a two or four stroke? the 2 stroke cannot create 20hp as the block is too small, however the 4 strokes share an identical block meaning you only need a different carb
how much oil should be poured into the engine?
It will say it in your owners manual, but if you dont have your owners manual, you can open the cowling and it should state on the engine how much oil and what type. You can also look up the owners manual online, just make sure its the correct year and model.
@@thecollegequarterdeck I have the same engine as in the video, Yamaha F25D et 2015, I saw the information in the video that it was 1.6l, thank you
Need some help with the same motor
What type of help?
@@thecollegequarterdeck I’m having a fuel starve issue at high rpm . I’ve changed everything that pertains to lack of fuel . New gas line, primer ball and tank , cleaned carb jets , new plugs , new fuel pump and screen filter , oil changed she runs great for about 5 min then it chugs if I pull back 1/4 throttle it seems ok . I’d like to be able to drive WOT
Hello 40hp and 30hp Yamaha long leg 4tienpos how much they cost new or used of those I am from Uruguay only spoke for tra. If you can pass me your cell phone number to communicate them thank you
The price would depend on the year and model you choose to buy. Also, depending on if you want a new or used one as well. If it's used, it will also vary on condition.
Ok the bes ...perodak japan
👍🏼
Your missing gasket may have been stuck to lower unit. Seen it before
Yup, sometimes they get doubled up which is not good.
What size is the oil filter wrench
Its in the beginning of the video where Chris lists all the tools and parts that are needed. ^-^
Thanks !
not a word on API GL 4 or 5.

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an older motor he is working on. I could not find my manual so I added 1.6L of oil. Motor was waaaaaay to full. I had to drain our .5L because the newer motors only hold 1.1L (2021).
Yup! You should always check your manual as stated in the video before filling up your outboard as it varies from model to model.
