Excellent instruction video, only lacking; starting the engine to fill the oil filter and rechecking oil level. Also, while on the lower end, remove the prop and check for fish line on the prop shaft that can damage the oil seal. Very well done.
Lol 😆 so I've been doing the lower unite change wrong for 30 + years😵 makes soooooo much more sence how you did it. Me huge mess, a real pain, frustrated, reluctan to do it. Bought several gadgets, made some gadgets, just to find out to fill from the bottom, oh well ..... That makes sence, why have I been soooooo blind for three decades??? THANK YOU!!!!!!
It is a privilege to watch talented young people share the valuable skills they have learned and pass on the knowledge they have. Very cool, and thank you for a great video! Here are two "tips" I recently picked up regarding this particular job. Evaluate them yourself and see if they are worth including in your own skill set. First tip is to prefill the oil filter before you place it on the engine. Inside the oil filter is specially treated filtration paper. When you prefill the oil filter that filtering material soaks up the oil; you can actually pour a surprisingly amount of oil into the filter then install the filter without have any of the oil you put into the filter leak out. The advantage in doing this step is that lubricating oil gets to your engine's critical surfaces faster following the oil change because the oil doesn't have to first fill up the filter, then soak through the filtering material before passing on through the filter to the internal critical surfaces. The second tip is to put some (heavier duty) tape on the skeg below the lower oil drain/fill hanging off the skeg straight down. Then when the oil drains instead of running all the way down the skeg it starts down the skeg and then transitions to the tape and drips off the tape into whatever you are using to collect the old gear case oil. - Respectfully
@@martyhonda6983 yes and no. Don’t fill it up. If you put about half full the material will soak it up, knocking the time down to fill up and then coat the inner parts
Hey guys, this is an awesome video full of great info and done in a "straight forward fashion". I would love it if you guys could do the same instructional on a Yamaha f9.9 four-stroke. It's different enough that I would love to see it done.
We actually have a 1999 4HP Yamaha and a 2012 8HP Yamaha that we will be releasing here in the next few weeks! The 8HP isn't too different than the 9.9HP so keep an eye out for those videos in the next few weeks!
Terrific video! Many thanks. One question. I'm having a real problem identifying which oil filter to use for a 2001 4-stroke 25hp Yamaha outboard. The number in your video is usually changed when I try to order.
It should say which filter you need in the owner manual. Hopefully this may help! Cheers! yamahaoutboards.com/en-us/home/owner-resources/all/owners-manuals
I understood everything in the video and it was very well done but I was under the impression that Yamalube was beer. Beer is a necessary lubrication to get the wrench turner properly asphyxiated to do the job and ignore all outside interference such as wife and dog and small children.
Great instruction video. Yamaha has a new model of 25HP, The F25LWTC. It is fuel injected; and while the oil filter is in the same location, the fuel filter is not. Also, the pil pan drain plug is in a different location, which right now, I cannot locate.
Hold on a second. The oil filter o ring was not on the filter when you took it off. Also always check the lower unit lube holes for the little gasket that likely got stuck. Dont want to be doubling up seals or gaskets. Good for you tho bud, you did good.
I do believe it is there in the video. Very good points with making sure not to double up seals and gaskets, I've seen someone do that before. Not Recommended~! 😅
Great question! We got it from our local parts/outboard dealer here in Newport Beach. You can buy the pump online and should be listed as a "Yamaha Outboard Lower Oil Pump". You want to look for the same pump size for your container. We use this lower gear case oil/pump for different types of outboards so the threads don't always match, so you may want to check your thread size as well. Hope this helps!
It will say it in your owners manual, but if you dont have your owners manual, you can open the cowling and it should state on the engine how much oil and what type. You can also look up the owners manual online, just make sure its the correct year and model.

They are small circles that fit around the oil screws. They should be yamaha brand. If you talk to your parts dealer, they will be able to let you know if they need to be motor specific. You can looking up the outboard and find the parts number.

Is it a two or four stroke? the 2 stroke cannot create 20hp as the block is too small, however the 4 strokes share an identical block meaning you only need a different carb
Hello 40hp and 30hp Yamaha long leg 4tienpos how much they cost new or used of those I am from Uruguay only spoke for tra. If you can pass me your cell phone number to communicate them thank you
The price would depend on the year and model you choose to buy. Also, depending on if you want a new or used one as well. If it's used, it will also vary on condition.

You need to start engine to fill up oil filter then stop it and recheck oil level
Ahh Yes! I forgot to cut out the oil check part since we didn't start the outboard. Thank you for the reminder! 😊
Do you have a link to that oil filter wrench?
Yes, the link in the description of the video should work. If it doesn't, let me know!
Hi College, the Yamaha 9.9 JMH 4 strokes doesnt have a normal oil filter. How can i change the "oil strainer" ? thank you for any help
Normally the oil strainer is left as is since its such a hassle to get to.
But also feel free to reach out to your local distributor/ repair shop and see what they have to say
Helpful thank you.

Only thing is where I live I won't be able to get an oil filter for the upper unit

Models can change from year to year so you will have to look at your outboard and compare.
Cuánto de aceite lleva el motor y el de transmisión motor Yamaha 25 4 tiempos
A veces varía según el año de fabricación del motor fueraborda. Yo consultaría el manual del propietario. ¿Qué año es el tuyo?
5 stars.
Thanks :3
Does that engine have pull start or no because I’m trying to find one that doesn’t have pull start just one that connects to steering
This outboard and most of our 20-25HP Yamaha do not have pull starts, they all start with a key.
I have 2019 on my pontoon with tilt trim......
So the outboard has to come off the boat ?
No, you can keep it on the boat. We just used this outboard that was on the stand as an example. Of course, you will have to remove it from the water.
What do the gaskets on the lower half look like and do they have to be outboard motor specific?
They are small circles that fit around the oil screws. They should be yamaha brand. If you talk to your parts dealer, they will be able to let you know if they need to be motor specific. You can looking up the outboard and find the parts number.

Trueeeeee!
How much engine oil is in the filling?
As in "How much oil is put into the upper end of the outboard?"
Do Yamaha 8hp have oil filters?
Usually they have oil strainers which are hard to get to and remove so people usually dont swap it. Its similar to the 4HP video we made. :)
