    Nice. The only thing, other than the 20% loss for the inverter (and many claim to be 90% these days), the stress on the battery will be the same between dc 12v, 30v, 48v and ac. If you are pulling 600w (again, other than inverter loss), you are still pulling 50amps off the 12v battery even if that’s converted to 48v dc at ~12.5amps, same holds for 120v ac. But I do really like your idea to simplify the wiring.

  • @fratermus5502

    @6:00 "I only need a wire that can handle 15A". That's on the output side. The *input* wire needs to handle [450w / alternator voltage], which is probably in the 30-35A range. If you wanted to only run 15A wire the boost converter would need to be under the hood.

    • @zalllon

      You are correct. For anyone reading this, this converter set up will pull at least 30amps from the battery at 12V … so make sure you are using oxygen free copper in min thickness of 8 AWG that is multi-stranded (multi-stranded more resistant to breaking due to temp fluctuations and vibrations over time). Assuming most folks are running about 10 ft from batter to converter (google search for wire gauge to Amp load to length of cable). Also keep positive and negative wire lengths the same for connections (always recommended for electrical power connections).

    900w at 12v is 75A... The 2 times 30v/15A lines will draw 75A from the alternator/crank battery 12V line. This is the same for the AC inverter, so no saving in wire gauge.

    We have used a DC2DC charger from the alternator to a lithium power station since 2016, this regulates the charge. The only issue with the LED power supply is that once it dips below 12v output, most compressor fridges won't operation.

    Would this work the same with a DC to DC with mppt? If I set my rig up I would be forced to switch back and forth between solar and alt charging. Curious if its been tested with a different smarter Dc to Dc that would switch between alt and solar.

      I can't say I've done a ton of research but I was trying to find something to be able to have this and solar plugged in at the same time. I think if I recall it was that the mppt controllers all wanted 12v as the alternator source not 24 or 30v.

    Why dont you need to wire for 20 amps? Is it because the solar connector only accepts 15 max?

    • @admiralcrom
      @admiralcrom 4 месяца назад

      Max output voltage for the dc to dc converter is 30 volts. So 15x30 = 450 watts input to the Delta, which is max input for each xt60i connector on the Deltas. Since he mounts it in the back, if the length of the cable was 15ft then it would have needed to be 4 awg wire. But if he mounted in under the hood less than 2 ft away from battery then he could use 12 awg for the whole thing. Oh, and the connector going into the Delta has to be a xt60i connector with the third pin wired to black. The cable that comes with them the car adapter is not a fast charge cable even though it has an xt60i connector. But the xt60i to the MC4 connector has the third pin wired for fast charging, thus over 8 amps.

    • @MR-kc9xt
      @MR-kc9xt 4 месяца назад

      @@admiralcrom See this is the confusing parts what you said goes against his presentation on this mod. From what I understand the idea behind this mod is the DC DC converter is going to pull 15-20 amps. The DC to DC converter is then dialed up to push out 30 volts which is 450 watts like you said going into the Ecoflow only the if special connector is used(easy to understand part). You statement seems to go against his statement and I am having trouble understanding the concept. Does the DC DC converter make the extra 300 watts via voltage or is that extra watts provided from the alternator. Does simply changing the voltage via the DC DC converter create extra watts or in the end is the alternator supplying it thus making wiring requirements extremely different? Do watts just appear when the voltage is changed?
      That converter does not look like it would fare well in an engine bay with its active cooling.

    • @MR-kc9xt
      @MR-kc9xt 4 месяца назад

      @@admiralcrom Say if I already bought 6 awg cable and Anderson connectors to hook up to the DC DC converter. Could I purchase 4 gauge wire for my initial run and then have an anderson connector reduce down to 6 awg to connect to the converter? My DC DC convertor does not have post terminals is has screw terminals that fit a maximum size of wire of 16mm squared or around 6 awg

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  4 месяца назад

      I am not an electrical engineer but I will share what I know.
      Watts are the sum of Amp x Volts. If you want more watts you need to increase the Amps or Volts. This is why this is a voltage converter, it takes your input amps and increases the voltage so the watts are higher.
      The more amps you have the thicker gauge wire you need. The thickness is determined by the amps and length needed.

  • @truckinglife5678
