A big advantage using the phone for navigation is the audio future of Komoot. Put the phone into a waterproof bag and an phoneplug into the ear. Komoot will navigate and tell you the direction into the ear. So you don't have to look at the bike computer all the time and have more fun enjoying the landscape around you ;o) I love this future very much.
GMBN is awesome! They have inspired me to start mountain biking and create my own RUclips channel (White Creek Outdoors). Thanks guys for the inspiration!
Loved my komoot in tenerife. Planned one around the local riders and fond some epic trails I would have never found. Also I just used my phone and hired a bike. Put the phone in my rucksack and had my headphones on giving directions. 👌
Wow thanks! That was really helpful of getting to know Komoot. Tested out this weekend and it was just great on planning and finding the correct trails. And now I can also test some more of them without getting totaly lost or ending up in a big fen...
Thanks for this video, Komoot is a brilliant app and pc route planner, been testing and trying it out this week so we just got some cheap iPhone 5s off fleebay and put them in an armoured case, works great and much cheaper than those garmin, plus the maps work offline and you don't even need a sim card in the phone.
Planned rides are fun every so often, but much more prefer just riding with the flow and taking "random" trails that come up. Especially near cities there are tons of really great shorter trails, connected by pavement so you get lots of different trails in one ride.
Handy guidance thanks. Just started using Komoot, finding it good for avoiding busy roads when commuting as well. Ordered a Wahoo Bolt Roam so looking forwards to linking them up.
Pretty handy video as I just downloaded Komoot the other day and had no idea what I was doing 😂 Looking forward to getting some rides planned for summer now 👍
Komoot is a really good App I use to plan and explore. I usually plan my tours for mountainbiking...and the Apps sometimes really leads me in the woods 🤣 Like it👍 Always nice trails.
Have you ever tried Trailforks? You can do a lot of really nifty stuff with it - and other users can post vids, pics, trail updates, etc... it often gives details on trail features, and it tells you level of difficulty. I was travelling from Canada to Geneva (my wife had a work function), and was able to find some good DH sections on Mont Salève.
Nice video. You don't need a dedicated GPS. I use my phone with a Bluetooth earphone (just one ear) and the turn by turn instructions work really really well so I can leave my phone in my pocket. Just try it you'll be surprised.
I used it for my college commute so it would be more fun. I was having a blast and explored many trails on my way. Too bad i never payed attention to time and got 1 hour late 😂
I thought it was a bit rubbish when I used it the other day, but seeing this I hadn't realised there were different settings for mtb, so eager I went back and tried my destination and starting point again. Again it picked roads, but ah ha, click alpine and hey presto. . . no different. Guess Cornwall's just a bit rubbish for interesting routes. Took a couple hours in the end checking the council website for byways and bridlepaths, finding then on google street view, check they looked ok then forcing Komoot to take that route or remembering to ignore it's instructions when it couldn't find the footpath I'd be going down. Maybe with user input it'll start listing trail highlights. I just hope it's not got trail nazi admins like Trailforks who aren't happy if an added trail they are hundreds of miles away from ever riding aren't 101% happy it meets their exacting anal requirements because it doesn't start and finish on a mappable feature, runs to close to another trail or just doesn't exactly match the google satellite image. After months of riding and adding then finding them vanishing or being changed to be wrong I'm done with it.
I'm in Northumberland, one of the best places to explore on a mountain bike, however, any route I try and build on Komoot gives me the majority of it on road, even when selecting Mountain Biking. Very disappointing to say the least
#askGMBN You might have mentioned this, but how does Kamoot compare to Trailforks? The granularity of tools for mapping regions and elevation seem a bit better for the enthusiast. I live in Northern California, so my primary source of information has been Trailforks and contains many similar features as Kamoot.
I really like the idea overall, but it doesn't work in some countries sadly :( here in Costa Rica even if you know there is an off-road route, it always picks the pavement routes. I guess I could become a pioneer 😂 sad I won't be able to get routes from other people though
Hi GNBN , I like find and planning rides and finding new places to ride . I am also a Garmin user and upload maps off Garmin connect . I also use os maps to help with the planning and to make sure I use bridal ways . I have been looking at your challenge route with the roadies on your komoot account and am keen to explore this area . But the last section down to Pistyll Rhaeada looks to be on footpath . But Komoot doesn’t show this as such and even grades the downhill . Am I miss reading the route or are you riding openly on footpaths ?
Do you know whether or not you have legal right of way on any of these tracks? A “path” would imply it’s at most a public footpath which has pedestrian rights but not for cycling. In some areas in the country there are potential access issues where a load of people riding where they don’t have the right to could lead to blanket bans, including existing route which do have access…. It’s very clunky in comparison, but with the OS mapping app you can at least see the rights of way .
I’m getting stuck with point on my road that I want to visit or stop for refreshments, and not aloud me to continue riding, taking me back to that point. Garmin 530 . Any suggestions
Does the route planning (including turn by turn instructions) work on a Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT? This would be for routes made using the free version of Komoot with one unlocked region.
@@mattlyon3488 Something like the Five Ten shoes and Race Face Chesters as pedals (good quality and not too bad price). Both offer great grip. Also your feet position plays big role. There is at leat 1 or 2 videos about the topic through out the years.
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
I see the trail. They have it named. But I am dammed if the software will follow the root. It makes a straight line between A and B. Any suggestions on this?
Apologies if its a daft question, but does the app guide you to the start of the trail? I’m wanting to explore the Cairngorms more, it would be handy if the app or my car sat nav could take me to the nearest car park/drop off point, then use a Garmin from there.
Hi GMBN, I'm interested in buying a Garmin device for MTB navigation...which one would you recommend? I'm asking because I suspect that there might be devices which are probably better for road navigation but inferior when it comes to outdoor navigation.
You get one area free, thats the Komoot map. Any other area or worldwide is paid for. Probably other features too but not found those yet. That said I've just zoomed in on Wales which isn't my area and the details the same, so who knows. France too.
Sadly the USA Kammot community is an absolute WASTELAND. Garmin Connect route planning has a solid community here. Would be great if you could explore that a little for those in the USA.
Have you got an epic ride planned?
No, but I did do one last year with my father when I was 15: the via algarviana within 6 days, 1 day rest
yes, 7 days of trans alp, but i’m not responsible for planing the route for it, i’m only responsible for preparing my fitness for it ;-)
Thanks GMBN planning my next route now!

Garmin etrex are worth a look as the are aimed at multi discipline use and aren't one tick pony's like the edge series.
