There are three layers of functionality to Komoot. Pre ride planning, during ride navigation and recording, either using the phone app or synched to your head unit, and then post ride, uploading photos, etc.
Given that I’m not on a bike and I haven’t been for a ride yet, let’s start with planning. While you can plot and adjust routes on the fly using your smartphone app, for in depth route planning the desktop version gives you a bit more space and a few additional functions.
First, you’ve got to create an account. As I said, it’s free, although you can choose to purchase maps for offline use - more on that later.
The first screen you see is your feed, with a log of your rides, or other people’s who you’ve chosen to follow. More on that later too. For now, let’s go to the route planner screen.

Love this brilliant app, but some of the % gradients & elevations can be well out. Had a climb at one point at 45% instead of about 7.
I use it to plan rides, to get inspirations for ride. Usually I just copy one of the existing rides, maybe change it a little. I download the route onto my head unit before I start, I do not use the app for navigation. I choose komoot after evaluating a few similar apps and ideas, mainly because it allready had many good routes available (and the app itself works fine too). I bought the "all maps" package, I think it is worth the money (even though the maps are of course OSM and therefore available for free).
@@fatheremmet2003 yikes, perhaps there's a glitch there with the OSM data? Anyone can amend this which is pretty handy.

How do i make the same track but several laps?
In early Summer 2018 I cycled across France from Calais to Marseille via (near) Bordeaux, Toulouse and Narbonne. Generally, Komoot's route planner generated very pleasant routes (I cycled mostly in 'Bike Touring' rather than 'Road Cycling' mode). So, yeah, generally the routes were fantastic, but every so often -- at least once a day -- it would send me on to a hellish departmental (or even national!) road, leading to an immensely stressful cycling experience. Sometimes the stretch along busy, dangerous road would be several miles long. Once it did this to me where it sent me down what was basically a motorway, when later I discovered that it *could* instead have sent me along a lovely, quiet residential road that ran parallel to the busy motorway. I was really pissed off and stressed out by that experience. But the Komoot app had other problems: it would tell me to "Turn Left in 100 metres" (or something like that), and yet there was definitely no left turn to take! Or it would say "At the next roundabout take the 3rd exit" when it *should* have told me to take the 2nd exit! Dangerous and stress-inducing. Komoot can generate wonderful routes, but use it with care because it can occasionally send you onto monstrously busy, highly dangerous roads.
Users need to add water sources = Town Fountains, potable springs, etc. That's what's needed.
Totaly agree, small tip in germany graveyards are mostly drinking water.
We usually use pubs. When they first see one or two cyclists asking to fill up a few bottles they're always happy to help, but by the time they've filled up 20 bottles later of the whole group of cyclists they didn't realise we were with, they're not so happy anymore 😂
Great idea for highlights!
The feature already exists! Use the search-filter feature to highlight "public drinking fountains" on komoot display. The data comes from the OpenStreetMaps base data. Setup a free wiki-like mapping account and update your locality on OSM. I like adding secret connectors between suburban neighborhoods so that we can travel further while more safely avoid those nasty main auto thoroughfares.

After more then ~8000km logged in Komoot i only can recommend it for cycling and hiking in use with a smartphone to navigate. You wont need a cycling computer. Saves money and weight. Purchasing the whole package is well worth it and the routing is good. Greetings from Berlin
Not necessarily required but also better in every single way. The added comfort and carefreeness of a Wahoo is tremendous.
Thank you Si, this sounds like the perfect tool I was looking for planning my next multi-week cycling trip. Combining roads and paths is surely the best option to log the miles and have fun.
Дядя Володя you should consider the premium version of Komoot. IDeal for multi stage routes. Worth the money.
I've been using komoot since 2015; on my long bike trips from Austria to the Netherlands, to the Czech Republic, and even to Spain. I also use it to record my local MTB and road cycling rides. Besides the navigation the best thing is the highlights feature. Even in my familiar local area I found a lot of new nice roads and trails to ride, thanks to the community of komoot. Both for MTB and road cycling this is the best app!

I bought all the maps as a one off payment for the turn by turn navigation using headphones. Worth it bargain!
Did the same for turn by turn navigation with imported GPX routes on my Wahoo. Agreed, all maps option was a bargain 👍

Levent ercan No one time payment. It is a real bargain. Also the premium version of Komoot is worth the money when you want to plan multi stage journeys.

I've been using Komoot for a while now - I find planning out a route and then seeing the distance is really accurate - eg, for getting that gran fondo in strava.
I didn't know that you could change it to gravel though, so thanks GCN for showing me that, will need to try that out next time I plan a route.
Yes and MTB, touring, running etc - very handy!
I only downloaded it due to some research I was doing for my ELEMNT Bolt and it was the syncing and turn by turn navigation that made me choose it as Strava does not give turn by turn on the Wahoo! Really pleased with how easy it is to use on phone and PC.

Fantastic app, easy to use and great informations about your routes. You can plan routes or you simply can spontaniously record new routes. Great you can applicate highlights of your route. And it works for different sports like hiking, Mountain biking, tour biking or road biking.

Outstanding introduction to this app! I’m new to using it; hoping to use it to plan some long distant (multi-US state) bikepacking gravel rides. I think it will be useful too, using it for “off-road” backcountry rides, with the purpose of accessing isolated fly-fishing spots in New Hampshire and Maine. Komoot is awesome, I use it for really long times now.
I also use Komoot on account of having a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. One of the most useful features is the option to invite your mates so they'll have the route ahead of time. Good for head units that navigate on their own to the starting point of a planned route.

Apologies if I lack information on this, I have never used Komoot. I do have a further question while I'm here, why would you need turn by turn directions on a group ride with your mates? I wouldn't have thought anyone gets together to ride round and round in a city centre with one way streets etc? I would have thought groups would go out into the countryside and ride a nice route, where the only turns would be at junctions where you could just look at your smartphone or head unit. At the start of July I'm going to visit my sister in France and I'm going to ride the 24 miles from the ferry to her place around the coast, I've already sorted the route in Komoot and will have turn by turn directions on my Wahoo Elemnt bolt all ready to go when I get off the boat
@@thekiteflyer1 I see, that's interesting, I can see how that would be useful. I hope you enjoy the ride and the visit to your Sister! You know you can do the same thing in GoogleMaps, by downloading the areas you wish to navigate in (in navigation parlance they are called tiles) and then set it for bicycle and you will have turn by turn navigation (like normal GoogleMaps) and via spoken via bluetooth to any device you wish. If you have a flat rate data plan on your phone of course you can do this live with no roaming charges for data. As you know this is free! In June (12-16th), I am competing in a self-navigated race from Gijón in Northern Spain to Sevilla, 915kms with a 100hr maximum time limit. I won't be using Komoot for that.....All the best, Ride on! Simon, all I can say is thanks I have been using this app/ website for ages it is excellent especially for hiking, gravel, mountain biking however I have never spotted the little drop down box where for example you selected gravel, A trip to the opticians may be overdue. Cheers.

Global Cycling Network I got Komoot for my Apple Watch. No voice instructions? Beeps or vibration with Turn by Turn navigation on the Watch?
Best route planning app out there, I paid the one off fee for the whole package, so used in conjunction with my Wahoo bolt, I can have turn by turn directions wherever I go

I used komoot last year {2018) in New Brunswick after some searching for an alternative to google or ridewithgps. Lucky I did as Google was downright dangerous in its route planning for road cycle trips. Komoot came up with the best options and did not fail. Best to use it with a Bluetooth earpiece as on screen in the sunlight whilst riding is not good. Glad it works for you too!

Thanks to you guys mentioning it in your Morocco and Iceland epics I am using it already since a couple of months. It's very useful to someone like me who doesn't remember even the streets near home. Also, aside from smartphones and head units, it also talks to smart watches (at least the Apple watch) and that's also brilliant if you don't have a head unit and don't want to strap an expensive phone to the handlebars with an expensive mount. Only thing to take care about: the navigation might lag a bit where the reception isn't perfect; so make sure you know where to turn on an epic descent if you don't want to scream past your junction and have to climb back up :)

Purchased Komoot some time ago and (mostly) love it. A couple of issues here or there (can I help update the maps?), but nothing bad. The biggest benefit for me is the offline maps. The area in the United States that I'm in at the moment (more rural parts of Alabama...) doesn't have any or has very poor signal coverage. The other major problem that I've been running into is there seems to be a complete lack of use by many in the US for this app, so I get to miss out on some of the amazing social aspects of it. That being said, the purchase of the Global maps was worth it.
Shame I am one year late o live in bristol and would've been amazing to meet you legend!!
The gradient on the Orbea is one of the best paint jobs I've seen on a bike in a long time

I've got the opposite problem: I hate planning and love riding, so my planning is normally last minute and its bitten me a few times. Perhaps you can plan the routes for me and I'll ride them for you?
@@graphics_dev5918 Or you just record the route and store them. Might be handy for later.... That's what I do often (And yes, just start the Wahoo recording and it will be transferred to Komoot!)
I think Komoot could add some features to the route planning side. Specify a distance and a loop and let it plan a route for you without any input. Garmin try to do this but it's pants I think Komoots planning is better.

Thanks for the video guys. I'm not one to deride (no pun intended) anything on here, I hope anyone using this enjoys it and rides with a smile on their face and the sun on their back. I also appreciate this channel and those that sponsor it, Komoot being one of those, so I don't wish to bite the hand that feeds us, but there are far superior products available that are much more industrial strength and vastly cheaper. I'm not going to rhyme these off here, but I did just create a Komoot account and took a free area based on my location. A "mountain bike" ride from my house to a local town 27kms away had me on the road for 17 of those 27kms???? I can ride there with probably 3kms on asphalt. I appreciate that "dumb navigation" (not getting lost) is enough for most, especially when you are in a country/ county/ area you are unfamiliar with. I wish Komoot every success, but in the spirit of transparency, I felt the need to express my opinion on this regarding available alternatives, some of which have been mentioned already in the comments below! A feature of Komoot that wasn't touched on in the video is celebration of Experts / Pioneers on a per region basis. That allows people with local knowledge like yourself to be recognised as an authority on your area. Since Komoot utilises Open Street Maps, it is possible that the way types and surfaces are wrong, or tracks / paths aren't in the data, and by contributing to OSM you could help improve all products that use OSM (such as Komoot).

thx planning a gravel bikepack norway ride from nordkape to holland for this summer on komoot, but didn't know it was able to plan for gravel... :) was using mtb/race routes gona remake some I gues :D

Don't trust the routes. Gravel routes suggested in my local area are not suitable for any kind of riding.

As well as for cycling have used it for my other obsession ....Sea kayaking, using the free draw facility able to plot water bound routes.
Bonkers good! I use Komoot most of the time. A lot of trips can meld into one, so Komoot keeps all the goodies together and dated etc - I even add pics. Will be getting out more now so more will be uploaded. What's more it's FREE! "Jeeves?! did I pump up the tyres?"

a feature which i like very much and which i could not find anywhere else: colors for the grade in the elevation profile with zoom in capabilities
I'm using komoot for planing and navigation on my mobile phone (which is on my handle bar with quadlock) as I dont have any garmin yet... Komoots planning feature is much better than strava, but I dont use komoot for any post ride analysis, as there strava is much better.
Been using it since you guys mentioned it. Total have 27 plans added with 6 have been done. Can't wait to complete the rest!
You forgot to mention the take photo feature during the ride. I usually do it and when the ride finishes, the photos are already there ready for next step: creating the epic slide show :)
For me, this is simply the best & most helpful app that I have been waiting for.

I normally use Strava whilst on a ride, via my phone and handlebar mount. I tried Komoot for the first time following this video. If you want to plan your own route, Strava is miles easier, I gave up with Komoot, planned it on Strava and then exported it to Komoot. On the ride it does have some useful features, visual turn by turn, either speed, distance or elevation display on the map view (although elevation image is so small it is pretty pointless). Map is smaller than on Strava but I like how on Komoot your position is shown with an arrow head. Overall I prefer Strava, it has so many advantages, segments, social aspects etc but I hope Strava are 'inspired' by Komoot in their next upgrade, even putting speed / average speed on map view would be nice.
What advantages does using a bike computer, such has Wahoo have over Strava/phone? (I don't have any other sensors on my bike)
I'm with you on Strava. Advantages: Ant+sensors, power meter output, additional Wahoo (or other bike computer features) but the main one, battery life! Your phone will die days before the bike computer does! Ride On! Tim
I have the app and use it on my phone for voice navigation, which works quite well. I recently found the upload feature - For "create your own" routes, Ride with GPS is a better route creator. I haven't used the Komoot suggested routes yet. In the US, you get your county map for free, and I know the roads fairly well, and the Komoot suggestions can put you on some rather "bicycle unfriendly roads" when using "road cycling" and seems to seek out almost every "bike trail" for bike touring. I wish there were something in the middle, especially when "exploring" new routes.
Still...I plan on purchasing the full package as navigation only works for rides starting in regions that you have unlocked...I live in Kansas, along the Missouri state line. I can't start a ride in Missouri, however, if I start my ride in Kansas, it will map in Missouri without a problem - the navigation works fine. I used to use Ride With GPS and had to pay a monthly fee in order for voice navigation....I really like the "pay once and forget it" feature of Komoot.
As Komoot uses Open Street Maps, it might be that those bike unfriendly roads are miss classified and require someone from the community (like yourself) to update them.
I enjoy Ride with GPS myself, but the monthly fee is starting to annoy me. I will switch to Komoot for that reason. I still have gripes with Komoot though, I still can't get around the fact that you cannot just search for addresses and locations and add them as a bookmark. This should be a trivial feature, but it's not there. You need to create "tours", the software doesn't seem to have a bookmarking feature! Something that has been around since the earliest handheld GPS receivers :( Am I missing something?
Atm I use strava. The global heatmap is a great feature to plan routes on places you don't know. But I will give komoot a try for gravel routes

Used Komoot last year on our bike tour from Munich to Vienna - great product!
I recently done a Sportive - I had the file yet had to get it to the wahoo...I'm tech savvy yet found it quite confusing really..and at one point my HR was high and that DIDN'T HELP so Kamoot/Wahoo = it needs to be easier !

My last bikepacking trip I used google map to plan my route. But this can show and direct you to bike paths that google map does not. Already planned the routes for my next trip with komoot,
i try to use komoot in west Java, Indonesia. the road bike route is more to a MTB and gravel, so many broken roads and too many bumps, i'd recommend google map for road bike user here, but the app is good to cut down miles, good for slower bike, like 26 27.5 inch touring and hybrid
Riding on highways or freeways isn't much fun though..
Could be the data in Open Street Map for that area needs updating, since it is open source and community contributed maps
I have Garmin Edge 520 and still use Komoot in tandem with Open Street Maps to work with Navigation as it's main feature for most of my planned rides. Although I dislike Wahoo overall because I feel their products are kind of bland and not exciting enough especially since they came out with Element, was cool at first but didn't have color like Garmin does.
Hi there nice video. I just downloaded the app the other day, when you syc with with your gps system and upload the map to it from Komoot do you still need to use your smart phone at all?
I love the app and have been using the paid version for a couple of years now. However, it would be fantastic to add a few features, such as summary of speed information after a tour.

Yeah, I've been using Strava for years but this app's route planning features are indeed better
OMG. I take it all back. I've tried to use this app a few times and it always routes me in the shortest path with the busiest car roads. Strava has way more data about which routes cyclists prefer There is no reason to use this app in the US
I used Komoot for a bikepacking tour from Geneva, Switzerland to Split, Croatia and used a lot of gravel and singletrack. Didn't do any preplanning, literally did it all on the fly when I landed. Great app. Ride with GPS failed to download 90% of the way through downloading a route routinely and that ruined that app for me.
I am new to cycling in Europe and most of my previous multi day tours have been supported rides. A few questions, as I plan to ride from Copenhagen to Paris by bike (or train if I run out of energy).
What would be the preferred route ROAD OR TOURING at least for the first few days till I get used to the streets? Say 40 miles a day? Have a road bike fitted with a 10 lb seat bag, a 4 lb frame bag and a 2 lb bar bag.
Komoot appears to give a choice between road bike and touring? Is road bike route safe in Denmark and switching to touring south of Hanover? Intent is to get used to Europe on road by which I assume more asphalt, and then switch to touring as per Komoot.
I am hotel staying everywhere as I am an old guy (60). One important need is for a bathroom break after the first 45 to 75 minutes (weaker prostate). Do all coffee shops have bathroom or at least most? And are most public toilets on the route open after 800 am? Last time in Europe I had to have a bunch of euros for their use. Have they migrated to phone or card pay?
Do towns have public laundromats in Germany? A google search did not help; spears they don’t.

Similar to what we have with Garmin connect and planning routes?
Komoot is great, but it's hard on the battery because there's no audio directions (maybe when you get a premium account).
Another problem I have is that it gives place names in the local writing and local language. When you're a bit of an international traveler, it's hard to plan a route in Cyrillic, Arab or Hebrew for example.
Finding specific places, museums and monuments etc can also be a bit of a chore.
Other than that, it's amazing.
Do they offer training videos on their website on "how to"...
New Komoot and following you. On our first tour we turned around early and wanted to follow route back from where we were but it keep thinking we were going out of our way and kept trying to get us back on route to it's original finish. Can't figure out how to tell it we need to end direction and follow it back. Please guide me. Thanks so much.

had a look at Komoot, cant see how you can plan your own route like you in strava, where you plan your own route
Would you be able to display power meter live onto the komoot app without using a bike computer? I am about to buy favero assioma duo and was wondering if I also had to invest in a bike computer or if the app only could to the trick?

I'l stick with my trusty OS maps thanks. Keeps me thinking/independent and away from technology which serves up a fair % of why i'm out there in the first instance. Nice to leave the data and screens behind and see where the wind takes you and have an adventure !

I'm finding Komoot amazing - so good for finding great routes and navigating. Can I ask a possibly daft/naieve question? If you can use the smart phone app what's the advantage of using komoot on a wahoo unit?
Akashamitra battery Life on smartphone while using GPS is maybe 2 hrs? Wahoo unit has Authonomy 12 to 17 hrs.
I downloaded Komoot on the strength of your video. The suggested routes were full of errors. One suggested local route took me on a footpath with styles and then onto a private road (off road). Later on it took me over a river bridge that is closed for rebuilding (on road). I know the area very well so wouldn't consider these routes but there is no way on the app to report problems to help others. I have deleted the app as I would not trust it to find safe and reliable routes.

Is Komoot still good? I just purchased a Tern, and the Bosch app wants me to use Komoot navigation.
Looks very similar to RideWithGPS, with maybe, it would seem, an added advantage on route planning. What are in fact the key differences? Could anyone enlighten us all? Worth switching?

Potentially worth noting that Komoot gives turn by turn directions on Apple Watch. I have not, to date, invested in attaching my phone to the bike or a dedicated device, and getting the phone out to check the map is just a pain. The Watch app works pretty well, although I would like a snapshot of the map to confirm the directions when what the app appears to be saying doesn’t quite match reality.
For my Smartphone i used a velcro system from SKS and switched after a year or so to Quadlock both attached on the stem. Pretty pleased with it.
With the amount of battery on Si's phone at 7:00, I wouldn't be be too confident about using the phone to navigate even with the downloaded maps.

Can you configure it to automatically avoid bike paths? I want good bike routes that avoid treacherous roads but also avoid paved bike paths since the paths near me are narrow and busy. Because they are paved it tries to route me there even when I select road bike trip
any users use konoot for running/trekking on routes created from kml/gpx files where logged routes don't seem to be on footpaths/roads or at least on connected footpaths/roads (i.e. they seem no to intersect) for any base map available? how does komoot handle the offline voice navigation for these instances?
not fully updated for bucharest, romania. the route calculated was through a closed for traffic because of future construction work part of a bridge. the bridge itself is not fully closed yet, only the junction to the road komoot planned the bike trip.

Komoot is good, but the app / online still feels "early days" and can be quite fidgety to use. It's very hard to force Komoot to include known streets/ paths that are not updated in the maps. Also lot of mixup between gravel and road. So many times I try to plan a road specific ride and Komoot keeps insisting on redirecting to mountainbike or gravel despite "road" selected. One feature that would be helpful is some sort of "waypoint lock" feature that allows you to lock in the route youve planned so far without redirecting or trying to be smart when you add additional wayponts that might be outside updated maps or considered a non existing road. Cycling is so much about a specific route and less about "map navigation"
