    Any advice on “parking your bike”. I recently did my first bikepacking trip and I wanted to visit a city for a couple of hours. But I was afraid of leaving my bike and packs alone somewhere. Plus to save weight I wasn’t carrying a lock...
    same for hotels do you check before booking that they have bike parking available ?

    • @Drubbered
      @Drubbered 4 года назад +7

      I take a lightweight rinko bag with me to put the bike in, then the hotel won't mind you bringing it into your room or leaving it in their storage room.
      If you are willing to stay a full day in the city then that also solves the problem of where to leave bike and bags.

    • @joeottsoulbikes415
      @joeottsoulbikes415 4 года назад +4

      I have found that lots of hostiles will have an indoor bike room and let you use it for a bit before actual check in time if your early and a bit after you check out. Normal hotels and bed & breakfast usually do not accommodate bikes. In those cases or if I am camping I usually find a local bike shop, explain I'm on a trip and ask if they will store my bike and gear for a fee for the day. If you walk in with a six pack of beer for them they will usually let you do it for free or just like $10.

    • @2222johnharris
      @2222johnharris 4 года назад +2

      Most hotels, travel lodges etc will let you take your bike into the room, best check with the posh ones...ride with GPS is the best route planner because you can drop the street view man in and see the roads you will be riding

    Done my trips and planning, I can only recommend overpass-turbo.eu/ which is an api to filter for something specific in open street maps e.g. water fountains. Additionally some openstreetmap-app that can import gpx and you are ready to go as soon as everything necessary is bookmarked. For the next vacation every camping site and fountain on the Euro Velo 6 is marked between the Atlantic and Vienna/Austria as well as the route so I am following the line as I did in Scotland .
    Do your research, check for shops/restaurants on the way as well for some good food, take your time and take things slowly. If you are bikepacking you have a whole day to go from A further and at some point you will reach your goal. It is not a shame to use trains/buses if there is too much way left on the end of your vacation as long as you enjoy the trip

      I'm on the fence with komoot. Love the planning side of it, but the practical "turn-by-turn" element can be extremely frustrating. People look at me as I'm yelling away at komoot, as it told me to turn but then tells me to do a u-turn 15 seconds later!! Or will tell me to turn here, turn there, when its just following the curves of the road, but then ignores directions at a roundabout or t-intersection. I make an assumption (that feels right!) and then get the dreaded, "make a u-turn"! Yelling commences! 😀 We have a bit of an up-and-down relationship! I'm in central Italy and am sticking with it for now, but she is on notice. (and don't get me started on her Italian name & place pronounciations! Maybe komoot mk II will have native speakers instead of miss robo-voice).
