So many people writing here, getting so uptight about something so simple. Cage knows how to push people buttons - nice one John! Listen, you choose to be uptight, you choose how to react to life. Yes, the choice is really yours in every moment. I really enjoyed watching this and especially the calm smiles from John Foxx and Billy Bragg. I did a one-minute version of this at my concert last night with over 100 people watching. One of the most peaceful moments in my career :-)

You are all missing the point of 4'33. Its a piece by John Cage that is as indicated by the title four minuets and thirty-three seconds of silence. It's to challenge the conventional standards we have of music. It's to say music is found in everything not just in what we think can be written on a staff. Its to appreciate the "unheard" sounds of our daily life. It's artistic genius.

well, i'm glad everyone who viewed this liked it... the song is about listening to the sounds around you, that's why not one's playing "those expensive instruments," open your eyes and ears to some real shit, john cage was the man and always will be

I can't believe they did it all in one take.

Look up John cage and 4'33
From wikipedia: "the score instructs the performer not to play the instrument during the entire duration of the piece", "the piece purports to consist of the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed".

that's because u think about the human possibilities and the awesomeness and the tricks that musician can... but u forget that it is an art and not a circus with many unbelievable tricks.

@efod001 This is John Cage's experimental piece of music, called 4"33' because it is four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence :) an attempt is being made to get it to Christmas number one, and proceeds go to charity, as a statement against the trend of X Factors winners always being number one.

Well first off, these people didn't compose this piece. It dates back to 1952 and has been performed lots of times ever since. It is said that some people were so infuriated during the first performance they started shouting and stormed out. Funny to think that it still invokes such strong feelings in people. To me, that is art.

    You're all missing the point.
    What is music?
Music is a mixture and combination of sounds and silence. I guess, here it's just "pushing it to the edge". Nonetheless too bad, someone's already done this a while back i just cant find the composer's name.

@Danamoth Silence doesn't give music meaning. I'm pretty sure lyrics, instruments, etc. gives music it's meaning. without it, it's silence. I can listen to that whenever I want. Why would I wanna buy this? It's not interesting, it's not like theres hidden sounds in the background really. It's dumb. Anyone that thinks THIS is genius, obviously thinks of themselves too highly, and wants to seem like a music snob, like they're so smart for liking something so weird. This isn't music. It's blank.

@bollen91 I still disagree that this is even music. I'm studying music now and never have we done this and it's for a reason. There's nothing to learn from it, it's just natural noices.

@supahdave1987 Clearly you don't understand music, yes most of the kids in the video are pretty hipster but the piece says a lot about what music can be. The original song was an idea thought about a brilliant music professor in the 50s.

  • @aadamjacobs
    @aadamjacobs 13 лет назад

To record this in a controlled environment makes it lose it's intended meaning. It's not about hearing the silence. It's about what your hearing when you think you're hearing silence. Music is everywhere, all the time. Shut up and listen.

Depends on the context. If you gathered 50 people in an exhibition room and announced that you were going to perform a composed piece, and just shouted "Your mother's a bitch" at them and then left, then yes I would call that art. A lot of people probably wouldn't and you most likely wouldn't get any state funding but I would still call that art as long as you had an idea behind it.
So I guess it really depends on the thought and motivation behind the piece.

I agree. Music is ever-evolving but evolution happens according to a certain mathematical formula, e.g. humans are always evolving but we're not going to develop a tree trunk on our arse. And I disagree with your last statement, music can certainly be varied and the more different the better but someone needs to draw the line at what can be considered music in order to protect the artistic value of it, otherwise anyone could throw their shoe against the wall and consider it a masterpiece.

its getting harder and harder to find people who can appreciate even a moment of silence as time goes on, especially in this age of most of us being overly saturated with arts and media. i find myself guilty of propagating the same waveform at times! i think they should have amplified the ambient noise a bit more. we are not really hearing it as the engineer was hearing it in the headphones. and since they were conscious of it, it makes it a bit less artistic. it loses validity being planned.

While I'm against the X Factor, this was just a stupid idea - did they seriously think anyone was going to buy this? Well, it did reach Number 21 I suppose, so what do I know?
