The game has been teasing the Illuminate for way too long. Having only two factions to fight against got boring. Also like you said the nerfs were ridiculous. Instead of figuring out why players liked a specific gun and maybe adding flavor to other guns, they'd nerf it to bring it in-line with other less popular guns. Wut? I still occasionally play with IRL friends but I won't be back consistently until they introduce the Illuminate.
@nahfr. Well yeah, that's how games like this go. People hop back in for new content. I just think it was a mistake to launch with only two enemy factions and then to tease the third for so long. I'll still check it out but it'd have been better for the game for the black hole event to lead straight to the new faction rather than whatever is going on now.
Its inane man. Love the game but the community takes all criticism as hate and gets mad. This game has a lot of untapped potential, and a lot of things that have gotten fixed are a result of people criticizing it

its crazy how the first game only ever had a max of 20k people. and now their second game which wasnt ready for the amount of popularity it received, its almost like they never expected to have 400k people to begin with nor were they going to stress themselves about keeping. they got their slab of meat from the gaming community and now its time for the real fans to enjoy the game franchise we love so much
Things that can save the game(possibly): new factions, buff weapons, add a mode with bigger map and bigger team(8 to 12 players) add a city area with some broken vehicles we could take(an idea of a human faction would be interesting but still no pvp) maybe add a light air vehicles for bigger maps, every 6 months have the game go on sale for big updates
The problem with the nerfing is that they nerf way too much. Like guns just aren't allowed to even be decent, outside of some niche ones. And then of course the PSN thing pushed a TON of players away, and on top of that there's just no new big content. They've been teasing vehicles and new factions for months now, and the closest we've gotten to vehicles was the exosuit. The illuminate are supposed to come from meridia, and we have no clue how long it'll take for that to actually happen.
The core gameplay loop is fun. The balance patch made a lot of weapons much better. They have added new mission types that tie into the story. I had stopped playing as I was capped on everything except level, but they have just added in a new set of ship upgrades so I am back playing. The Sony thing was a massive fumble though, HD2 is still unavailable to purchase in 177 countries, though people who did purchase can still play. Not their friends though :(
Are you guys genuinely brainless? It was "hype" that got the game this amount of players in the first place. The game got an obvious loop so the loop got looped and people got bored and the hype died it should not have been that difficult to see this outcome
The thing is, its not a dead game yet, their are reasons to why this is happening, but the community is still growing strong. The reason their is this perception is because of mass youtubers making videos, not knowing what they are talking about, just reading a chart are going by their previous experience with the game. Context goes such a long way, which I respect this video for because you give alot of context. Theirs sooooooo many reasons for this drop off, but I think a lot of it is down to lack of content. Nothing major has happened in a little while and people get bored. Do not get me wrong, I love this game and I like horde style shooters, so its perfect for me. But a lot of people come because its popular, and are so use to flowing content that when they dont get it? they get disinterested. But since its a live service game, and the numbers are dropping, thats what people are calling this out for. I guess they are a small studio, did not expect the huge success to begin with and its taking its toll. I reckon this is just the start. Good video though man!:D
It's also literally just cause its a game man. Even now, its still doing relatively extremely well in the current market. But my point still stands. Most people play a game, have their fun and then move onto the next experience. That's it. Perfectly normal.
To this day I own Helldivers 1 and I wanted to get Helldivers 2 for myself and my GF. Now I can't even get it cause it's not available in my country. Who ever signed off on this at Sony I hope you are fired and homeless. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

they should make it where instead of wearing only one type of armor you can wear diffrent helmets, chespeices, arm braces, leggings, etc. and insead of combining passives. combining the armors result in new passives. if you wear all of one armor set then you get the passive it originally comes with.

The PSN issue really affected me and my friends at university. When this game came out, I bought it on day one and was having a blast. I shared it with my friends at uni, and many of my classmates and friends there bought and played the game. After the PSN issue, my friends were disappointed, and most of them dropped the game. Now, there are only about 8 of us still playing (originally 19), and we rarely play it anymore.
I have no problems with fighting the same enemies for months, and the gameplay loop is inspired. I agree that the nerfs were and are ridiculously bad, the balancing was a terrible idea. But my friends and I still love hopping on and fighting for freedom, regardless of little new content.
Genuinely, what do you find inspired about the gameplay loop? Do you really enjoy doing the same 6 missions and killing the same hoards of enemies or does the game give you different missions to run after the first 20 hours?
I think an invasion mode would hit hard. Either taking over a planet massively or defending the planet with an army of helldivers. With everything hd2 has, it would be serious PTSD to be in a massive battlefied
This entire video can be summed up without even watching it: This is literally just the standard of what happens to coop pve games Every single one of them will have a really big launch, and then as people play it on launch, they drop it after a while LITERALLY every PvE game ever, barring a handful of exceptions, does this The most notable of those exceptions being Left 4 Dead and 2. Because they go on sale for piss cheap, and have been out for 20 years now. Every single other one of them does this. It's literally just how the genre works.
Did you guys know that this game anticipated no more that 10,000 players at launch. Meaning this game was originally planned for a smaller community anyway. I think is it stayed around 20,000 players that’s enough plus the game doesn’t need a full player base to continue to play anyway. Still a great game to keep in your back pocket for friends. But I mean if 10,000 players is dead than cod and battlefield have been dead for a long time
Even if 10k players is dead (which is not) cod and battlefield have never died, even if I hurts to say CoD and BF still sell hundreds of thousands of copiens whenever a game launches
Most popular games loose about 90% of their players overtime, this is nothing special. I'd say the fact that its still having about 45k players on pc is actually pretty good still.
Actually the reason is is that people still go outside in summer so a lot of people will come back if not all of them after summer as they travel around the world or spend time with family.
watching the psn incident in real time among friends and over twitter was tremendous to see, the game seemed mad fun I was maybe a few days off of finally convincing myself to throw the $70 at it so I could play another game with the mates... then the fire nation attacked, everyone in my groups stopped playing, game's still going strong at least, there's still time to catch it
40k concurrent players, yeah sure the game is dead lol. Same kind of people saying "The Finals" is dead too cuz it has 15k instead of 200k concurrent on launch. Time passes, people move on, but maintaining 4 digit player counts several months after release is anything but dead.
They really need to listen to players like you those ideas about the armor and cryo-grenades were great! I would start playing again if they implemented it.
I’ll stand on this but I think arrowhead made a fun game by accident. Ever since launch they have been changing the game to what they feel it should be. Helldivers being as fun as it was the first month wasn’t intended. Also their balance team seems to hate fun.
It's like the design philosophy for HD2 has nothing in common with the design philosophy they had during HD1. Direct upgrades are gone, armor customization is now WORSE because your perk is tied to your armor, arguably the only net good with HD2 is that grenades and pistols are now their own slot instead of taking up your one perk slot, which you could otherwise be using for faster health recovery, unlimited sprint, emergency "escape from danger once", etc. ...but they don't capitalize on that because standalone perks in HD2 are oddball things that would've been a direct upgrade to things in HD1, with most of the good perks that are similar to the ones in HD1 being found on armor, again, making the armor customization system worse because it is now build-essential instead of just being cool and whatever you want to wear. It's like the two games have entirely different internal teams or something.
Everyone calm down We've just played it too much and everyone just needs a break from the game It happens to all games you cant play the same game over and over again you know? I have great hopes for the next updates to come to this game :>
I have no problem finding squads 24/7 and the game is still fun. It's just how the hype works atm but the people remaining are really nice and the ones who actually like the game.
And what were the numbers for Suicide squad again ? Helldivers 2 will get better numbers again, devs need a vacation too, many people are talking a break as well. Live service games numbers always varies, but don't way it's over or it's dead.
Using suicide quad as a comparision is not only the peak of copium, but also the biggest prove of failure any game ever had, compare it to bg3, a mostly singelpalyer game with no additional content post lounge, and not only are its numbers dobble that of hd2 offer dobble the time after release, but even compared to its peak numbers 1/8 is better then 1/10
Was going to jump on this game until I heard about weapon nerfs, that gave me blizzard vibes. After that I heard about the Sony account and that's when I and decided to forget this game existed.
When you have to spend 45 minutes just trying to get into a mission without crashing, disconnecting, or having to deal with gamebreaking bugs, it's an abysmal experience no matter how good the gameplay is. It regularly takes them weeks or even months to fix broken content.

We all knew the game was going to lose players after the hype died down and games tend to have lower player counts in the summer because people tend to do strange things like go outside or go on vacation during the summer. They'll come back up a good bit once winter starts to set in but not to their peak numbers.
As a guy who worked for a Finnish game company. Lemme tell you. They need to get their summer holiday in. They barely get any sun. However. On the other hand. As a person living in China and experiencing the normalized "crunch" for Chinese devs to produce contents to keep up with the players burn rate... It's not sustainable. It really isn't. Several of my friends working in the industry have decided to quit as the normalized crunch burns them out completely and make them unsanitized to any kind of future games.
Eruptor quickly became my GOAT primary and after they nerfed it I began to lose interest. Now I'm resource capped for month, nothing to buy from Warbonds because I don't trust them ever since the Eruptor nerf. Anything I buy that ends up being good will get "balanced". No thanks. Until they put some material in the game for me to spend resources on there's no reason to play.

Helldivers is the only game where all three of my individual friends groups (each one prefers different types of games) played it and was looking for players. Also the railgun nerf really hit home. It was the first shake up, but didn't effect me too much, but I'd remember it. Then more nerfs came.
This I feel is very normal and I might even argue healthy for video games. Peak in player count, find its base players and casual players slowly die out leaving a bunch of people who actually love the game.
I think when it started to really fall off was when Sony decided to suddenly enforce PSN accounts and region lock the game which caused a lot of tension in the community, personally that's when my friends and I (day 1 players and OG helldivers enjoyers) stopped playing.
I realize that it's been said and done for a little while, but I think that the thing that pissed people off about the whole PSN account on PC was that when you first booted it up, they didn't strictly tell you it'd be required later. It was a "link this if you'd like, don't worry if you don't." So, like many others, I skipped past it, and didn't think about it again, it was insane that PS came back and thought to completely dismantle what the community made without a PSN account. The crazy thing was, you could still add friends who were on PC and PS if you didn't have a PSN account. They made it such a big deal for no reason.
I kid you not. yo so weird, i didn't even search for this, and when I was browsing my steam list and I had this thought, and then when I open youtube, this was in recommended
You nailed it on the head. I stopped playing regularly when they nerfed the eruptor and uninstalled the game after they nerfed the quasar (I know it wasn’t much but without anything being buffed, I recognized the trend and just wasn’t having any fun anymore). I’d love to return to this game. The potential for space combat, flying eagle 1 or our command ships, adding city environments, mission types that change mid-mission if you fail part of it… so much potential for this game beyond just “new enemy type/illuminate”. Hope they wake up and realize the gold mine they’re sitting on top of
Don't you dare say something negative on Reddit, criticizing certain aspect of the game, otherwise you would be trashed to oblivion. Asking for quality of life improvements means that you are not happy with the game and you would be instantly downvoted lol. I've stopped playing this game completely due to toxic community.
Weapons are characters. You can't just nerf your weapons to hell when most people are using them, especially in a PVE game. The Railgun was like the Octane from Rocket League.
personally what i think will revive the game: unblock those 177 countries (yes im coping cus i cant play) and a mega update, tons of new stratagems, new weapons that arent super soakers, new enemy types for both factions maybe even the illuminates instead will revive the game as well as unblocking the countries (copium moment)
only reason the game had that many players in the first place was because of the streamers who were paid hype it up and play it for the first week or 2 - like basically every single game does now
I remember that I wanted to buy this game… but then… I got that sense in me that it wasn’t going to be worth it… I literally dodged a bullet by listening to my thoughts.
My friends are way ahead of me and we'd get into a match and all I did was shoot and I had zero clue what was going on otherwise and then my buddies wouldn't explain to me what the objective/plan was other than "just go here". Basically I never could be in an environment where I could learn the game myself. It's just a chore when I play it with friends.
Hd2 is the type of game you boot up after months of not touching it, play it for a few months and then drop it again. The game will never die for real.
Game was fun for a month or 2, then I quickly realized that all I'm gonna get is new weapons and armor and no "end game". Being a Destiny fan and having been spoon fed content, weapons, armor, and lore for years on end I knew Helldivers was going to take a similar turn. It's the same path every multiplayer game takes now: Massive release then spoon fed content to the dedicated player base thus killing off the casuals, making PvP games sweaty and PvE games desolate. When games were on a disc they had to give you all of the content on it otherwise it wouldn't sell, now we get a percentage and the rest through a season pass or DLC.

Unfortunately thats how it'll be after a few months of luminate
@nahfr. Well yeah, that's how games like this go. People hop back in for new content. I just think it was a mistake to launch with only two enemy factions and then to tease the third for so long. @@tristanstebbens1358 on pc, not really

This entire video can be summed up without even watching it:
This is literally just the standard of what happens to coop pve games
Every single one of them will have a really big launch, and then as people play it on launch, they drop it after a while
LITERALLY every PvE game ever, barring a handful of exceptions, does this
The most notable of those exceptions being Left 4 Dead and 2. Because they go on sale for piss cheap, and have been out for 20 years now.
Every single other one of them does this. It's literally just how the genre works.
Honestly I think the reason how L4D2 is still alive is because of modding, that actually saves games
Almost all games dip during the summer months, but in general there are cracks beginning to show.
I mean… 40k is still wild. Dead games barely be pushing 5k players
It’s not a dead game by any means
Actually the reason is is that people still go outside in summer so a lot of people will come back if not all of them after summer as they travel around the world or spend time with family.
bet you arrow head saw this vid since they just added 5 crazy good upgrades to the ship that you can get
watching the psn incident in real time among friends and over twitter was tremendous to see, the game seemed mad fun I was maybe a few days off of finally convincing myself to throw the $70 at it so I could play another game with the mates... then the fire nation attacked, everyone in my groups stopped playing, game's still going strong at least, there's still time to catch it
40k concurrent players, yeah sure the game is dead lol.
Being able to control when people STOP playing while having them think they were the ones that made the decision is more valuable than any micro.
Everyone calm down
We've just played it too much and everyone just needs a break from the game
It happens to all games you cant play the same game over and over again you know?

And what were the numbers for Suicide squad again ? Helldivers 2 will get better numbers again, devs need a vacation too, many people are talking a break as well. Live service games numbers always varies, but don't way it's over or it's dead.
Using suicide quad as a comparision is not only the peak of copium, but also the biggest prove of failure any game ever had, compare it to bg3, a mostly singelpalyer game with no additional content post lounge, and not only are its numbers dobble that of hd2 offer dobble the time after release, but even compared to its peak numbers 1/8 is better then 1/10

I think when it started to really fall off was when Sony decided to suddenly enforce PSN accounts and region lock the game which caused a lot of tension in the community, personally that's when my friends and I (day 1 players and OG helldivers enjoyers) stopped playing.
It’s summer, all games lose a big majority of their player base. Look at every game’s player audience in the summer time
I realize that it's been said and done for a little while, but I think that the thing that pissed people off about the whole PSN account on PC was that when you first booted it up, they didn't strictly tell you it'd be required later.
Hope they wake up and realize the gold mine they’re sitting on top of
I can't believe people are looking at massive 24 hour peak of over 40k concurrent players and are unironiclly saying the game is dead

Weapons are characters.
You can't just nerf your weapons to hell when most people are using them, especially in a PVE game.
The Railgun was like the Octane from Rocket League.
I'll be honest, when the railgun got nerfed I left the game and never looked back.
Constant nerfs and lack of actual additions you can earn without tedious grind is what killed this game.
The dude sounds like Ai frylock😂😂
It got old. The gameplay loop is the same. I’ll get back on when they bring new planets and the illuminates. Other than that it’s dead.
fate of most super popular modern games, still games from last decade tops the chart.
personally what i think will revive the game: unblock those 177 countries (yes im coping cus i cant play) and a mega update, tons of new stratagems, new weapons that arent super soakers, new enemy types for both factions maybe even the illuminates instead will revive the game as well as unblocking the countries (copium moment)
Between releasing guns then nerfing them, bugs, and teasing new enemies and not releasing them, the hype just died out
Oh how history repeated itself with the new update Escalation of Freedom
Yeah just dropped a new vid on it, super disappointed
Basically being forced to use the meta everytime is what killed it for me
it wasnt the weapon nerfs that got me..i had gotten to skull admiral and thought to myself 'what now' then just uninstalled
only reason the game had that many players in the first place was because of the streamers who were paid hype it up and play it for the first week or 2 - like basically every single game does now
I remember that I wanted to buy this game… but then… I got that sense in me that it wasn’t going to be worth it… I literally dodged a bullet by listening to my thoughts.
As PS player for twenty plus’s years now. I was done after the rail gun nerf. Everything this dude is saying is spot on. I’ve also been a gamer for over four decades (nearly as long as gaming has existed) so I know the industry and the current trends in development and that’s why I bailed when the Rail got taken out back and put down like Old Yeller.
Because homie don’t play that fk’n game. I did it on principle.
Respect.
War Thunder player here, i have seen worse nerfs over the years
I think they are doing just fine. I accept that the game can be finished just as a movie is finished in 2-3 hours. Good suggestions and a review of the game's history by the way
The main reason the player count has decreased is because the game has been delisted from Steam in many countries due to PSN requirements.
It’s not over.
