      Aron Ra is fun, but he lacks subtlety. He doesn't seem to have any awareness of what he sounds like to a believer, so he stands little chance of convincing people who don't already agree with him. It's almost impossible to ever win anyone over by piling on a heap of facts and confidence. It often actually has the opposite effect, sometimes known as the Backfire Effect, and Aron Ra almost seems to be deliberately trying to cause the Backfire Effect.

    • @Ansatz66
      @Ansatz66 3 года назад

      @RDE Lutherie "That's because you are assuming what he wants to sound like to believers, and I'm guessing you mean he want's to sound nice and friendly?"
      No, he probably wants to sound like he's got all the facts on his side and he's just trying to explain how things really are to people who consistently refuse to listen. That's probably how he sounds in his own ears and in the ears of people who agree with him, but unfortunately that's not how he sounds to the people he wants to educate and convince. The reason people refuse to listen is due to his approach.
      "Did you ever consider he wants to sound angry and fed up?"
      That seems plausible, but he could still sound angry and fed up without triggering the Backfire Effect if he played his cards right.
      "The backfire effect refers to dismissing and/or not considering new or better information to form ones views or extend ones knowledge or understanding."
      The bigger issue with the backfire effect is that it causes people to become even more convince of their current position even while we're presenting evidence that shows their position is wrong. The evidence has the opposite effect to what one would expect. It's not just that the evidence is ignored, but rather it somehow encourage people to go against the evidence, so Aron Ra is making people even more certain of Creationism.
      "In trying to convince someone of something, or point out errors, when instead of being friendly and accommodating their lack of understanding, one is frustrated and pushy, or even mean about it (offensive mode), then you are right, and it's less likely you will teach or convince them of anything right then and there."
      Being friendly might help sometimes, but the more important thing is to seem modest and trustworthy. It's counter-intuitive, but we should try to avoid saying anything that they disagree with as much as possible. Every time we say something that they think is false, we damage our credibility, and the less credibility we have, the less likely they are to listen to us. We can't force people to change their minds. We've got to guide them into wanting to change their own minds by getting them to think about the mistakes they've made until they discover those mistakes for themselves. For example, instead of presenting facts, we can try asking questions or telling stories. However we want to do it, there are strategies for convincing people of things, and Aron Ra is often an excellent example of what not to do.

    • @Ansatz66
      @Ansatz66 3 года назад

      @RDE Lutherie "I really don't think Aron is trying to convince them of anything."
      That may be true. He just seems so frustrated that people don't understand evolution. It's hard not to wish he'd say things in a more strategic way so that he'd have a better chance of actually reaching a creationist, but his audience probably wouldn't appreciate it if he changed his style now.

      So it depends on what you define as 'pain,' which psychologically and emotionally includes frustration, fear, and rejection, the withstanding of which leads to a mature, balanced, and realistic life. Psychology calls 'exposure therapy' the enduring of the feared in order to gain mastery over it and so end a disorder (which we can describe as a psychological state that interferes with healthy functioning). In this case, enduring pain lessens or even overcomes it.

    We mourn the dead specifically BECAUSE we don't believe in a life after death. Why would i mourn someone, knowing they just went to the best place imaginable because that is literally what christians tell us heaven is? Why would i be sad about thinking that person now found eternal happiness? On the flipside, if i think that life ends, and lost someone, and know that everything they were, everything they ment to me and everything that i used to do with them is now forever gone, why would i not mourn them? We mourn someone, not because they think they went somewhere else, but because we know they are gone, vanished, and that's final. We won't meet them again, we won't see them in heaven. They are gone, purged from the world, and all that remains of them is the memories that live on in us until eventually we die as well and their memories die with us. And when everyone who remembers you is dead, then the world will be just like you never existed. And that, is what we mourn.

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 3 года назад +2

      No, we mourn the dead because it's sad and it hurts to longer have someone who's meaningful to us in our lives anymore. We experience a deep, irreplaceable loss of someone we had an emotional connection to. Nothing more. Nothing less. You (and several others here) are trying to make it something it isn't. PLENTY... TONS AND TONS of people who genuinely "believe in" an after life mourn their dead exactly as much as the rest of us who don't. Sorry, you're wrong about this.

    • @maythesciencebewithyou
      @maythesciencebewithyou 3 года назад +1

      @@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff He's correct. It's different for them, they literally believe that their loved ones are now in a better place and that they'll soon see them again and spend eternity together. Do you also cry like that when someone just moves for a couple years to another place? If they were genuinely certain of their beliefs they should be happy that their loved ones finally made it to the place that is their lifes goal. After all it's a better place without suffering and after a short while they'll see them again. To them if they truly believed than they just won't see them for a short while, while the rest of us actually knows that we'll never see them again, because they no longer exist. They are not in a better place, but at least they are also not in a worse place. We have genuinely lost them, and because we had our connections to them are we sad that they are gone for good from our lifes. Nothing will bring them back, we'll never see them again. That's why we mourn knowing fully well that the people we love are truly gone from our lifes. The way religious people cry either they think they won't see them ever again, meaning they either think they'll be in another place than them after death, e.g. in hell vs heaven, or deep down they actually do know that death is the end and they'll never see each other again. They cry because they lost them and don't really know that there is an afterlife. They force the belief of an afterlife on themselves to stop the crying. But if they were honest they'd see that their loved ones are truly gone. If they were certain that the people would be in a better place and they could see them soon enough and spend eternity together, they wouldn't mourn like that. After all it would be just a brief parting. Your lost one parting a bit earlier than you but eventually meeting at the same destination.

They would simply move the goalposts by saying that God being omnipotent does not mean that he can do anything but any *logically possible* thing, and that, since creating an unliftable rock and then lifting it is logically impossible, it's a nonsensical question. A better approach would be to ask them if their god can do something that is logically possible, such as improving himself. He can't improve himself because that would mean that he isn't perfect. The theist would then probably move the goalposts by saying that their god is not omnipotent but simply the most powerful being that can exist, not realizing that this would also mean that he isn't perfect.

      Sa Hihi I’ve seen this same argument used numerous times and like the commenter above mine it can easily be dissected.
      Religion really is nothing more than hope for the fearful. The fear of death and the possibility that this is most likely your one and only chance to actually live is frightening.
      Imagine how productive and amazing this planet would be if we humans were living like we don’t get a 2nd chance. Life then becomes and emergency and the want to live it to its fullest becomes priority.
      The thought of a heaven is essentially a plan B. Having a plan B detracts from plan A which is actually tangible and is something we see and do everyday.
      Religion truly does poison everything and the amount of debates I’ve ever had with theist it’s clear most of them haven’t ever really read their said Holy Books. Cherry picking talking points from your local church without actually doing your homework is like bringing a stick to gun fight.

      I think you are over-thinking the whole issue, leading you to a false conclusion.
      The worst about it is that this line of logic will continue to destroy any and all possibility of keeping a society running.
      The issue, more than likely, is just simple tribalism. They like Trump, because Trump is Red and they are Red. That makes Trump good.
      And so long as you don't realize the core cause of that, you won't have any stability for decades to come.

    When his is like 2k years out of date.

      He is without doubt a formidable debater. Articulate and free thinking. I don’t believe a single apologist exists who could hold a candle to his wisdom. There’s a few others out there in the same mould, Matt, Sam, Michael and of course the late great Christopher Hitchens.🏂

    "Christians talk about hell all the time but they never talk about heaven"
    This
    THIS
    I mean if you think the idea of a never ending hell is thoroughly moronic, try getting a theist to explain heaven
    Make popcorn first

      Heaven is the obliviousness you experienced before birth. Hell is this life right now. Everyone filled with doubt and the ability to hate. Oh an nuclear icbms.teaspoons of manufactured virus that could literally wipe out humanity etc.

      Find your way out of the fog surrounding heaven/hell and maybe find a path by investigating consciousness- -. You'll not find that so easy to dismiss--- although then you might find popcorn somewhat inadequate if you are looking for a soporific as an aid to life.

      Well but of course
      The stick is several times more effective than the carrot
      Ask any five religious people about heaven and you'll get eight different answers. No one has ever experienced a state of pure euphoria. But we can all imagine what such a state would be like....individually
      Ask 10 people about hell.....
      It's unanimous. We've all experienced the exquisite pain of being burned by one thing or the other

      It's why everyone is familiar with Dante's Inferno as the archetype for modern day "hell" even if most people have no clue that that is where their version of eternal torture comes from.
      A Greek comedy
      Even less people are aware that Dante's story also had a part where he travels to heaven.....
