Thanks for your review - best Hoka since the discontinued EVO Mafate 2, with an even more comfortable upper. Highly recommend over the stiffer and torpedo-shaped Speedgoat 5.
I loved the Speedgoat 4, and then loved the 5 even more until I realized the ankle collar now comes up too high and caused severe lateral ankle pain. Is the Mafate Speed upper similar to the speedgoat 5, or does it have a more traditional cut?
Had the same ankle issue until really broke them in. Did a short 20 miles in them to break them in then did a 50 mile mountain race and found that I should have given it more time. Done 400 miles in SG5s now and ankle has been fine.
I'm overpronate and currently run the hoka arahi 6. How is the stability with these. I love running the mountains and it's time or a trail shoe!! Awesome review
I am wearing Arahi 6 as I am typing this. So, this is a very neutral trail shoe. It is not going to provide any stability at all. However, I have always found that when I am running a trail, I do not have to stress too much about the stability of the shoe. On a steady road, of course. But on the undulations of the trail, it becomes less important.
Graig Allen, look for torsional stability by twisting the shoe. The more stable trail shoes will have more resistance to twisting. Seth James does this in his videos. My physical therapist pointed this out with all my shoes. I also have to add a thin arch support. It's trial and error but I am having luck with the Mafate.
I like the Tectons but I like this one more (or Moore). This one seems to have a better grip and more spring even though the Tectons are lighter. I also look at the Tecton as a racer and this as a fast daily trainer.

Great review! It seems like the Speed 4 is quite similar to the Mont Blanc. Which would you recommend? I'm currently using the Speed 3 and Timp 2

I had that issue too, and yes the Mafate Speed 4 doesn’t hurt my ankles or Achilles Tendons ;-)
@@TrailrunnerTroy Thanks for the info, I'll definitely give them a try now!

Nice review, I had not heard about this shoe.
Thanks for watching!

Faster than the tecton x or mont blanc?
I have the sg4 and Olympus 4 but they're more for plodding
this shoe sounds amazing.., I am between this shoe and the more trail v2 .., camera work is looking sharp too
How does it compare to the Tectonic X? Thanks

What should be improved in this almost perfect Mafate Speed 4 in your opinion?
if I had to guess I'd say forefoot width - Hoka's biggest weakness. Hopefully Steve can give us the word on that.
Too heavy :(
