Krisztina Kapuvari True, I understand your point, but with of these fairytales, it appears that the children are all relatively born around the same age. Which means they can’t work as much as the house would need them to. I am not saying that children aren’t a blessing back on those times, but it seems like it would be more work to try and feed all those hungry mouths instead of trying to sustain just themselves for the time being. :)
Plus kids died all the time. You could have 20 kids yet by age of ripe age of 40 you could only have two or three surviwe eighter to starvation, sickness or work accident.
We have the same social dynamics we see in evolution as humans. Some have very few children but growing very old (MEDCs) some have many children but die early (LEDCs) and some are in between.
And that’s how poor people entertained themself in times without TV or internet: by stealing, cheating on their best friends and pretending to be dead.
"Koma" (the original title for "old friend") is an interesting word in Hungarian. It does generally mean best friend, childhood friend, pal, chum. But this "best friend" was also an institution of rural life who'd do things like act as your children's godparent; your "koma" and their family'd effectively become adopted extended family through their participation in these big family events. Of course beneath this formal "bffs for life" role you'd occasionally find jealousy or rivalry, especially if both families were opportunistic. For the folks who created these stories this was common knowledge, and so these serve both as a parody of people they knew and witnessed, and cautionary tale for others on how not to be such fools as these two "best friends".

It sounds very much like English is the narrator's first language/one of their native languages if they speak another. The English is old and translated from Hungarian cartoons so that's why it sounds quite different from today's common and modern language.

Oak apples are a knobbly growth on oak trees formed by a little parasite. They make their nests inside and hatch out as little wasps - you saw one fly out when the child stomped on it.
And also a real life reflection. Sometimes, back in those days, people did have to beg, cheat, and steal just to make ends meet. If you want to give a accurate impression of those days, you gotta include those things. Plus, it can also act as a warning.
