Lodal EVO MAG-20 Garbage Truck w/ Custom Glass Recycler

- As single stream recycling continues to become the method-of-choice for curbside recycling collection across America, glass has quickly stood out as being the peskiest commodity to handle during the sorting process. As it is often broken into fine shards during compaction in a refuse truck, it is often rendered unsortable and useless, and can even contaminate other commodities by the time it reaches a sorting facility. To combat this issue and to get the highest value out of glass, many recycling haulers around the Pacific Northwest choose to segregate glass from the other recyclable commodities. Many of these haulers have creatively customized their trucks to be able to collect co-mingled recyclables as well as glass with the same truck, while keeping the two streams separate. A fine example of one of these unique custom jobs is this Lodal EVO MAG-20 manual side loader, which has been equipped with a custom "recycler box", built by A.A. Welding of Vancouver, WA, to separately contain glass. This "recycler box" features a trough-loading system, reminiscent in design and function to that of the ADR Advance curb-sort recyclers seen throughout the west coast during the 1990's. The glass "recycler box" and trough fit perfectly between the the cab and hopper of the Lodal MAG-20, leaving the rest of the truck unaltered for the easy collection of co-mingled metals, plastics, paper, and cardboard. Aside from the custom addition for glass recycling, the Lodal EVO is in itself a unique truck. Rather than featuring a separate cab, chassis, and body, this entire truck is one fully integrated unit, allowing for a lower loading height, shorter wheelbase, and fewer overall parts.
All-in-all, this is a very unique truck, and it was a lot of fun to be able to watch it in action! I hope you all enjoy it as well!
I would like to take a moment to extend a huge thanks to the crew for allowing me to shoot some video of their truck!

I'm lost for words. Absolutely amazing. Lodals are some of the best trucks, and being made in my state of Michigan hits pretty close to home. This unit sounds absolutely amazing. The custom glass compartment also adds to the amazingness, very creative in how it works. Great find, can't wait to see the other videos!
+garbageproductions1 Glad you enjoyed the video! Lodal's have always been one of my favorite trucks, I could watch 'em for hours! Keep an eye out, I'll have some more Lodal videos up in the coming months!
Amazing find. This truck is great, I loved the truck so much, I am at a loss for words!
Unibody truck, Rockwell Axle, Allison Transmission, Cat or Detroit Engine, GM Steering, Morse Shifter, Motorola Alternator, Bendix Brakes, a true Patchwork of Suppliers
But, since it's all "off the shelf" stuff, there's less planning required for manufacturing and spare parts are cheaper and easier to get.
Could you make it go?
The ones I used to be around all had 5.9 Cummins the red industrial version not the dodge version
Fantastic video Bryn! And fantastic work to George too, awesome to see him on the job. That glass bucket is so cool. At the beginning I was trying to figure out how the glass compartment tipped in. That's one thing I love about Oregon (who can't haha). I think it's a great idea to separate glass, I'm actually quite surprised that Oregon and Washington are the only ones to do it. Especially since glass doesn't sell for much apparently. I'd like to see that concept pick up somewhere else. Lodals sound so darn good. Bet George enjoys working on these haha That actually looks fun riding on the side of the truck. Great video!
To George - Congrats on the job! Keep up the hard work!
As always brother amazing work finding and capturing these amazing trucks. These Lodal evos have always been a personal favorite of mine because its its unique heavy industrial equipment look. They are nothing but 100% refuse vehicles. Adding custom glass containers just makes them that much more hardcore. The 1980s versions are the best in my opinion. Great video. Thanks
What an awesome truck. Very clever design. Keep up the great video's.
Great post! Lodals were my least favorite type of MSL for a while, but now I've grown to like them a little more now that many haulers don't consider them anymore compared to Labrie for example.
A Truly Dangerous Truck; the More Loaded, the more Unstable as the Front lifts Up
Lodal's are the best. I watched them as a kid, on my street. Last time I ran into an Lodal, was crossing the street, after taking a major test, last year in November. Way before that back in high school, there was the lodal recycler passing the school bus. Think there phased out now. I feel right at home since they are made here in Michigan
Can I ask what city in Michigan? I live in the Detroit area and I am trying to find any and all Lodals in the area, so far there's one one Ann Arbor and that's it.
+garbageproductions1
The DPW yards used to run them long time ago in the detroit area. Back in 2001, I did see WM lodal recycler which was rare for me to see in Southfield on a route. Very last time seeing a lodal was in Downtown Ann Arbor.
Ah okay. I just filmed the Ann Arbor Lodal, that is on my channel. I have heard rumors about WM Lodals, I have to figure out what happened with those.
+garbageproductions1
In Ann Arbor? I have to check out the video then. Yes the WM lodal's have no idea what happened to them either. Think dempster one recycler replaced the WM lodal's.
I know a lot of drivers that worked on the Lodals, I'll see if they know what happened with them.
Great video love the glass recycler
Oh I know now it’s the thing that’s lifts up glass and dumps it.
